The SPARC tokamak is a critical next step towards commercial fusion energy. SPARC is designed as a high-field ($B_0 = 12.2$ T), compact ($R_0 = 1.85$ m, $a = 0.57$ m), superconducting, D-T tokamak with the goal of producing fusion gain $Q>2$ from a magnetically confined fusion plasma for the first time. Currently under design, SPARC will continue the high-field path of the Alcator series of tokamaks, utilizing new magnets based on rare earth barium copper oxide high-temperature superconductors to achieve high performance in a compact device. The goal of $Q>2$ is achievable with conservative physics assumptions ($H_{98,y2} = 0.7$) and, with the nominal assumption of $H_{98,y2} = 1$, SPARC is projected to attain $Q \approx 11$ and $P_{\textrm {fusion}} \approx 140$ MW. SPARC will therefore constitute a unique platform for burning plasma physics research with high density ($\langle n_{e} \rangle \approx 3 \times 10^{20}\ \textrm {m}^{-3}$), high temperature ($\langle T_e \rangle \approx 7$ keV) and high power density ($P_{\textrm {fusion}}/V_{\textrm {plasma}} \approx 7\ \textrm {MW}\,\textrm {m}^{-3}$) relevant to fusion power plants. SPARC's place in the path to commercial fusion energy, its parameters and the current status of SPARC design work are presented. This work also describes the basis for global performance projections and summarizes some of the physics analysis that is presented in greater detail in the companion articles of this collection.

SPARC is being designed to operate with a normalized beta of $\beta _N=1.0$, a normalized density of $n_G=0.37$ and a safety factor of $q_{95}\approx 3.4$, providing a comfortable margin to their respective disruption limits. Further, a low beta poloidal $\beta _p=0.19$ at the safety factor $q=2$ surface reduces the drive for neoclassical tearing modes, which together with a frozen-in classically stable current profile might allow access to a robustly tearing-free operating space. Although the inherent stability is expected to reduce the frequency of disruptions, the disruption loading is comparable to and in some cases higher than that of ITER. The machine is being designed to withstand the predicted unmitigated axisymmetric halo current forces up to 50 MN and similarly large loads from eddy currents forced to flow poloidally in the vacuum vessel. Runaway electron (RE) simulations using GO+CODE show high flattop-to-RE current conversions in the absence of seed losses, although NIMROD modelling predicts losses of ${\sim }80$ %; self-consistent modelling is ongoing. A passive RE mitigation coil designed to drive stochastic RE losses is being considered and COMSOL modelling predicts peak normalized fields at the plasma of order $10^{-2}$ that rises linearly with a change in the plasma current. Massive material injection is planned to reduce the disruption loading. A data-driven approach to predict an oncoming disruption and trigger mitigation is discussed.

At Niquelândia, Cr extracted from the soil (5,000–9,300 mg.kg-1) is likely the result of the Cr-bearing Fe-oxides compared to the Cr-spinels, showing that low Cr-containing minerals present in the dunite (enstatite, olivine and clay minerals) have been completely dissolved. The chromites, accumulated inside soil profiles, have undergone chemical weathering, leading to a Cr enrichment during soil genesis. Traces of dissolution inside the soil chromites suggest that they can be slowly weathered. In this case chromites could represent a diffuse source of available Cr(III) within the soil profiles.

Gastrointestinal nematodes represent important sources of economic losses in farmed ruminants, and the increasing frequency of anthelmintic resistance requires an increased ability to explore alternative strategies. Theoretical approaches at the crossroads of immunology and epidemiology are valuable tools in that context. In the case of Teladorsagia circumcincta in sheep, the immunological mechanisms important for resistance are increasingly well-characterized. However, despite the existence of a wide range of theoretical models, there is no framework integrating the characteristic features of this immune response into a tractable phenomenological model. Here, we propose to bridge that gap by developing a flexible modelling framework that allows for variability in nematode larval intake which can be used to track the variations in worm burdens. We parameterize this model using data from trickle infection of sheep and show that using simple immunological assumptions, our model can capture the dynamics of both adult worm burdens and nematode fecal egg counts. In addition, our analysis reveals interesting dose-dependent effects on the immune response. Finally, we discuss potential developments of this model and highlight how an improved cross-talk between empiricists and theoreticians would facilitate important advances in the study of infectious diseases.

The notion of inside dynamics of traveling waves has been introduced in the recent paper[14]. Assuming that a traveling waveu(t,x) = U(x − c   t)is made of several components υi ≥ 0(i ∈ I ⊂ N), the inside dynamics of the wave is thengiven by the spatio-temporal evolution of the densities of the componentsυi. For reaction-diffusion equations of theform∂tu(t,x) = ∂xxu(t,x) + f(u(t,x)),where f is of monostable or bistable type, the results in [14] show that traveling waves can be classified intotwo main classes: pulled waves and pushed waves. Using the same framework, we study thepulled/pushed nature of the traveling wave solutions of delay equations

We begin with areview of the latest results on the existence of traveling wave solutions of suchequations, for several classical reaction terms. Then, we give analytical and numericalresults which describe the inside dynamics of these waves. From a point of view ofpopulation ecology, our study shows that the existence of a non-reproductive andmotionless juvenile stage can slightly enhance the genetic diversity of a speciescolonizing an empty environment.

Assessment tools and frameworks have been developed that allow environmental assessments to be conducted and which can be used to demonstrate whether non-human species are protected from the impact of exposure to ionising radiation released under regulation. Frameworks are often tiered, increasing in the level of complexity, input data requirements and need for expert involvement as the assessment moves to successively higher tiers. These are, conceptually, similar to assessment approaches available for chemical risk assessment. What criteria (e.g. numeric benchmarks) should be used, and how these should be defined, are currently under debate, but it is likely that use will be made of approaches developed for setting assessment criteria for chemicals. However it will be necessary to ensure that any assessment criteria developed are fit for use in a regulatory context. This paper reviews the similarities and differences between regulation of, and assessment methods for, chemicals and radioactive substances and presents recommendations regarding how components of chemicals risk assessment may be adopted for radioactive substances.

Protecting the environment and the public from radioactive hazard is a top priority for all companies operating in the nuclear domain. In order to quantify dose impact on members of the public due to annual discharges of its nuclear installations, AREVA developed the COMODORE code in collaboration with Institute of Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety (IRSN).

COMODORE is a synthesis of 3 softwares validated by IRSN (ACADIE, COTRAM and AQUAREJ). ACADIE is a code elaborated by IRSN and the Treatment Business Unit of AREVA synthesizing the works of the GRNC (Nord-Cotentin Radioecology Group) created by the French government to deal with the estimation of exposure levels to ionizing radiation and associated risks of leukemia for populations in the Nord-Cotentin. COMODORE is a version of ACADIE designed to be adaptable to any other AREVA site. Thus, the operators of the south east of France (Pierrelatte, Marcoule and Romans sites) carried out the adaptation of COMODORE for theirs specificities (for instance, uranium in the terrestrial model).

At the moment, COMODORE is used in routine by the AREVA operators to assess the annual dosimetric impact and is also being adapted with SGN to model the radiological impact of uranium ore treatment residues repositories.

The classic ERA method is today recognised as relevant for both chemicals and radionuclides. As uranium presents the double ecotoxicity, a unique method may then now be applied to evaluate in tandem the associated ecological risks, following the classic four steps methodology (problem formulation, effect and exposure analysis, risk characterisation [1]). The approach is developed for freshwater ecosystems receiving ore mining releases, exposed to uranium as a chemical element and as the radioactive families of its isotopes 234, 235 and 238. The structure and the function of the ecosystem are described by a conceptual model on which both the exposure and the effect analysis are based. Species Sensitivity Distributions are applied (1) to the chemotoxicity data, to estimate a Predicted-No-Effect-Concentration for uranium in water (in µg/L); (2) to radiotoxicity effect data, to estimate a Predicted No-Effect-Dose-Rate (in µGy/h). The risk is assessed at first through the risk quotient approach, a screening method involving for the radiological aspect back calculation of the water limiting concentration from the PNEDR for each isotope taken into account. When significant, the assessment is refined applying probabilistic techniques. The whole approach applicability was tested on a real case-study related to a former uranium mining site.

Ecological Risk Assessment is used to evaluate the potential hazards to the environment that are attributable to emissions of pollutants from industries. There is guidance available regarding the general ecological risk assessment process including problem formulation, exposure and effect analyses, and risk characterization. In a first step, the Screening-Level Ecological Risk Assessment (SLERA) is used to evaluate whether the emissions can put the receptor ecosystems at risk or not. Concerning releases from nuclear facilities under authorization, any SLERA is a challenging task because of (1) the large number of substances, (2) the various quantities that may be emitted to the aquatic ecosystems and (3) the various environmental situations to be considered. This task must be performed for two categories of pollutants, radionuclides and chemicals, each exhibiting specificities in terms of concentration in media or dose-effect relationships. Since these relationships for radioactive substances are based on the tissue-absorbed dose in Gray, the first step is to express critical exposure values to radionuclides in a consistent way with the critical concentration used for chemicals. We describe here the screening and ranking method that was developed and an application to the electronuclear sites along the Rhône River.

Low-frequency fluctuations are observed in a plasma confined by a strong dipole magnet and containing an energetic high-pressure population of trapped electrons. The quasi-coherent fluctuations have frequencies characteristic of drift frequencies of the lower temperature background plasma and have large toroidal and radial extent. They are excited throughout a wide range of plasma conditions determined by the level of neutral gas pressure. However, for a sufficiently high rate of neutral gas fueling, the plasma density profile flattens and the fluctuations disappear.

Protéger l’environnement est aujourd’hui une problématique globale qui concerne toutes les activités de l’homme. Il s’agit donc d’être capable de démontrer la compatibilité de ces activités avec la protection des milieux naturels, mais aussi si nécessaire d’agir pour pallier à un risque potentiel ou avéré, et ce généralement dans le cadre d’une réglementation de plus en plus stricte. Dans le domaine chimique, la prise en compte de cette problématique se traduit par l’existence de méthodes dédiées à l’évaluation du risque environnemental. Dans le domaine radiologique, la nécessité de disposer de tels outils s’est accentuée récemment, afin de pouvoir justifier aux yeux du public et en toute transparence le rejet de substances radioactives dans l’environnement, de répondre aux exigences des nouvelles réglementations en matière de protection de l’environnement et enfin d’harmoniser les approches entre radioprotection humaine et radioprotection de l’environnement, mais aussi entre polluants chimiques et radioactifs, simultanément présents par exemple dans les rejets de routine des centres nucléaires de production d’électricité. Dans cette optique d’harmonisation, les démarches d’évaluation du risque à l’environnement lié à la présence de radionucléides ou de substances chimiques sont présentées depuis les concepts théoriques jusqu’à leur mise en œuvre comparative, approche nouvelle en cours de développement dont les premiers résultats sont présentés.

The metal bioaccumulation levels in target-organs associated with microlocalisation approaches at the subcellular level provide information for the understanding of the metabolic metal cycle. These findings could be used to select relevant biomarkers of exposure and to focus on specific contaminated organelles to study potential biological effects. Moreover, the metal accumulated in the cytosol fraction can be bound to macromolecules in order to be eliminated and/or to induce a potential cellular effect. Tissular distribution, transfer efficiency from water and subcellular fractionation were investigated on the freshwater bivalve, Corbicula fluminea after uranium aqueous exposure. The subcellular fractionation was performed while measuring associated uranium to each cellular different fraction as follows: cellular debris and nuclei, mitochondria and lysosomes, membranes, microsomes and cytosol. In our experimental conditions, the accumulation in the cytosol fraction was low and more than 80 % of the total uranium in gills and visceral mass was accumulated in the insoluble fraction. Main results presented in this paper come from light and electron microscope observations of subcellular fractions (nuclei/debris and lysosomes/mitochondria) in order to validate the efficiency of the fractionation technique. An adaptation of the fractionation technique is proposed. This set of data confirms high differences of fractionation efficiency as a function of used fractionation technique and organs/biological model.

Uranium behaviour in soils is controlled by actions and interactions between physico-chemical and biological processes that also determine its bioavailability. In soil solution, uranium (+VI) aqueous speciation undergoes tremendous changes mainly depending on pH, carbonates, phosphates and organic matter. In a first approach, plants (Phaseolus vulgaris) were grown using hydroponics to allow an easy control of the composition of the exposure media. The latter, here an artificial soil solution, was designed to control the uranium species in solution. A geochemical speciation code was used to perform the solution speciation calculations. On this theoretical basis, three domains were defined for short-duration well-defined laboratory experiments in simplified conditions: pH 4.9, 5.8 and 7 where predicted dominant species are uranyl ions, hydroxyl complexes and carbonates respectively. For these domains, the influence of plant growth stage on transfer was determined. The Free Ion Model (or its derivated the Biotic Ligand Model) was tested to determine if U uptake was governed by the free uranyl species or if other metal complexes could be assimilated. The effect of different variables on root assimilation efficiency and phytotoxicity was explored: presence of ligands such as phosphates or carbonates and competitive ions such as Ca2+ at the 3 pHs.
