The role of diet in the prevention and management of menopausal symptoms is poorly understood1,2. Digital health platforms have the potential to optimise collection of population-level menopause symptom data particularly in a rapidly changing environment2,3. This study explored the prevalence of menopause symptoms utilising data collection capabilities of a mobile app in a large population of peri- and postmenopausal women and to investigate novel associations between diet quality and symptoms.

Baseline data on diet, 20 menopause symptoms (i.e. 3 vasomotor, 3 sexual, 4 psychological and 10 somatic) and other characteristics of 70,412 participants of the ZOE PREDICT 3 app-based study in UK (n = 27,932 peri- and n = 42,480 postmenopausal) were analysed (NCT04735835). Dietary assessment was performed through an app-based food frequency questionnaire (PREDICTFFQ)4 and diet quality assessed using the Healthy Eating Index-2020 (HEI, score 0-100)5.

The burden of menopausal symptomatology was high; with 99.8% and 92.7% of peri- and postmenopausal participants reporting 1 or more symptoms respectively and 66.0% and 41.2% of peri- and postmenopausal participants experiencing >12 symptoms, respectively (P<0.001). Mean ( ±SD) symptom number was greater in the peri- versus postmenopausal group; 13.5±3.8, vs. 10.5±5.5 (P<0.001). HEI (mean±SD) was slightly lower in the peri- versus postmenopausal group; 73.9±9.7 vs. 76.6±8.9 respectively (P<0.001). Logistic regression analyses showed that a 20 unit increase in HEI was associated with reduction of 6%-37% and 12%-43% in likelihood of symptom presence (dependent on the symptom) in peri- and postmenopausal participants, respectively (P<0.05). ORs remained significant in adjusted models (for age, BMI, use of hormone replacement therapy, total energy intake and home environment (urban, rural) showing reductions of 7%-19% and 6-21%, respectively (P<0.05). Logistic regression analyses revealed that a similar increase in HEI (20 units) was associated with 17% and 19% reductions in the number of symptoms reported by peri- and postmenopausal women after multiple adjustments (P<0.05).

This large observational study confirms the high prevalence of menopausal symptoms among peri- and postmenopausal women and provides new evidence between adherence to healthy eating and reduced likelihood of menopausal symptoms, increasing the potential for symptom reduction by specific dietary approaches. Further studies should examine this relationship in longitudinal and dietary intervention settings.

Digital health technologies delivering dietary and lifestyle advice1,2 may offer a contemporary approach to menopause symptom mitigation in a large population base3. This study aimed to evaluate alterations in both diet quality and menopause symptom burden following the implementation of an app-based, personalised dietary intervention in peri- and postmenopausal participants.

Baseline and follow-up data (mean follow-up time, 207 ± 72 days) on diet, menopause symptom number (from 20 vasomotor, sexual, psychological and somatic symptoms), symptom severity (0-not at all, 1-a little, 3-quite a bit and 5-extremely) and other characteristics of 4,287 UK based participants of the ZOE PREDICT 3 study (1,000 perimenopausal and 3,287 postmenopausal) were analysed (NCT04735835). Dietary assessment was performed through an app-based food frequency questionnaire (PREDICT-FFQ)2 and diet quality assessed using the Healthy Eating Index-2020 (HEI, score 0-100)4. A novel Menopause Symptom Tracker Score (MSTS 0-100, Copyright © 2024 Zoe Limited) was used to capture symptom number and severity.

There was a modest increase in diet quality after the intervention in both peri- and postmenopausal participants; mean HEI from 76.4 ± 8.4 to 79.7 ± 6.8 (P<0.001) and from 78.7 ± 7.8 to 81.1 ± 6.4 (P<0.001), respectively. Baseline MSTS was higher in peri- versus postmenopausal participants 28.9 ± 15.1 vs. 18.1 ± 15.0 (P<0.001). However, both groups showed a significant decrease in mean MSTS after the intervention compared to baseline; mean change (95%CI) in perimenopausal was -8.7 (-9.5, -7.9; 30.1% reduction) and in postmenopausal was -6.6 (-6.9, -6.2; 36.5% reduction) (P for both <0.001).

The reduction in the overall MSTS was greater in perimenopausal compared to postmenopausal (P<0.001). Reductions in domain-specific MSTS for peri- and postmenopausal groups respectively, were as follows: vasomotor −0.56 (−0.71, −0.40; 24.9% reduction) and −0.47 (−0.54, −0.41; 31.8% reduction), sexual −0.72 (−0.87, −0.57; 18.6%) and -1.08 (-1.16, −0.99; 28.7%), psychological -2.3 (-2.5, 2.0; 35.0%) and -1.2 (-1.3, -1.1; 44.2%), somatic -5.1 (-5.6, -4.7; 31.5%) and -3.8 (-4.0, -3.6; 37.5%) (P for all <0.001). The reduction in the psychological and somatic domain-specific MSTS was greater in peri-compared to postmenopausal group (P for both <0.001).

This study supports the potential of personalised app-based dietary interventions in the mitigation of menopausal symptoms during menopause transition and its potential to affect the health and quality of life of millions. Further studies should investigate their efficacy in a randomised, controlled dietary intervention setting.

This study examined the efficacy of a probiotic in reducing depressive symptom severity in people with subthreshold depression. In a double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled trial, a probiotic (1 × 10^9 live cells per strain: Limosilactobacillus fermentum LF16 (DSM26956), Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus LR06 (DSM21981), Lactiplantibacillus plantarum LP01 (LMG P-21021) and Bifidobacterium longum 04 (DSM23233)) or placebo was taken daily for 12 weeks. Data were collected at baseline, 6 and 12 weeks including psychological symptom severity (Beck Depression Inventory, BDI; Patient Health Questionnaire, PHQ; Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale, HADS; and Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale, DASS). Biomarkers of glycaemia, inflammation (high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, hs-CRP), antioxidant status (total glutathione (GSH)) and stress (cortisol awakening response, CAR) were also measured. Thirty-nine participants (nineteen probiotic; twenty placebo) were enrolled. There were no significant between-group differences in the examined psychological symptom severity scores, despite certain significant within-group changes observed in both groups from baseline to 6 and/or 12 weeks of follow-up. Regarding biomarkers, the probiotic group showed reduced hs-CRP (–1520; 95 % CI –273·7, −2766·2 ng/dl) and CAR (–0·28; 95 % CI −0·05, −0·51 μg/dl) at 12 weeks, but increased total GSH (3·9; 95 % CI 0·1, 7·5 ng/dl) at 6 weeks, compared with the placebo. The current study reported favourable decreases in depressive symptoms in both groups. Although the within-group changes observed in the probiotic group were supported by favourable inflammatory, antioxidant status and stress biomarker changes compared with the placebo, further research is required to shed more light on the role of gut microbiota modulation on emotional regulation.

Tuberculosis infection (TBI) has been associated with increased cardiovascular risks. We aimed to characterize abnormal blood pressure (BP) readings in individuals with TBI. We conducted a retrospective study of adults with TBI presenting for their initial medical visit at a large midwestern U.S. public health clinic between 2019 and 2020. Abnormal BP was defined as having a systolic BP ≥ 130 mmHg and/or a diastolic BP ≥ 80 mmHg. Of 310 individuals with TBI, median age was 36 years (interquartile range 27–48), 34% were male, 64% non-US-born; 58 (18.7%) were previously diagnosed with hypertension. The prevalence of any hypertension (i.e., had a history of hypertension and/or an abnormal BP reading) was 64.2% (95% confidence interval 58.7–69.4). Any hypertension was independently associated with older age, male sex, higher body mass index, and individuals of Black race. In conclusion, any hypertension was present in over half of the adults evaluated for TBI in our clinic. Established hypertension risk factors were also common among this group, suggesting that individuals with TBI could benefit from clinical and public health interventions aiming to reduce the risk of future cardiovascular events.

Reducing inequalities in preconception health and care is critical to improving the health and life chances of current and future generations. A hybrid workshop was held at the 2023 UK Preconception Early and Mid-Career Researchers (EMCR) Network conference to co-develop recommendations on ways to address inequalities in preconception health and care. The workshop engaged multi-disciplinary professionals across diverse career stages and people with lived experience (total n = 69). Interactive discussions explored barriers to achieving optimal preconception health, driving influences of inequalities and recommendations. The Socio-Ecological Model framed the identified themes, with recommendations structured at interpersonal (e.g. community engagement), institutional (e.g. integration of preconception care within existing services) and environmental/societal levels (e.g. education in schools). The co-developed recommendations provide a framework for addressing inequalities in preconception health, emphasising the importance of a whole-systems approach. Further research and evidence-based interventions are now needed to advance the advocacy and implementation of our recommendations.

This paper presents an artificial neural network (ANN)-based nonlinear model predictive visual servoing method for mobile robots. The ANN model is developed for state predictions to mitigate the unknown dynamics and parameter uncertainty issues of the physics-based (PB) model. To enhance both the model generalization and accuracy for control, a two-stage ANN training process is proposed. In a pretraining stage, highly diversified data accommodating broad operating ranges is generated by a PB kinematics model and used to train an ANN model first. In the second stage, the test data collected from the actual system, which is limited in both the diversity and the volume, are employed to further finetune the ANN weights. Path-following experiments are conducted to compare the effects of various ANN models on nonlinear model predictive control and visual servoing performance. The results confirm that the pretraining stage is necessary for improving model generalization. Without pretraining (i.e., model trained only with the test data), the robot fails to follow the entire track. Weight finetuning with the captured data further improves the tracking accuracy by 0.07–0.15 cm on average.

The complementary feeding period (6-23 months of age) is when solid foods are introduced alongside breastmilk or infant formula and is the most significant dietary change a person will experience. The introduction of complementary foods is important to meet changing nutritional requirements(1). Despite the rising Asian population in New Zealand, and the importance of nutrition during the complementary feeding period, there is currently no research on Asian New Zealand (NZ) infants’ micronutrient intakes from complementary foods. Complementary foods are a more easily modifiable component of the diet than breastmilk or other infant milk intake. This study aimed to compare the dietary intake of micronutrients from complementary foods of Asian infants and non-Asian infants in NZ. This study reported a secondary analysis of the First Foods New Zealand cross-sectional study of infants (aged 7.0-9.9 months) in Dunedin and Auckland. 24-hour recall data were analysed using FoodFiles 10 software with the NZ food composition database FOODfiles 2018, and additional data for commercial complementary foods(2). The multiple source method was used to estimate usual dietary intake. Ethnicity was collected from the main questionnaire of the study, answered by the respondents (the infant’s parent/caregiver). Within the Asian NZ group, three Asian subgroups were identified – South East Asian, East Asian, and South Asian. The non-Asian group included all remaining participants of non-Asian ethnicities. Most nutrient reference values (NRV’s)(3) available for the 7-12 month age group are for total intake from complementary foods and infant milks, so the adequacy for the micronutrient intakes from complementary foods alone could not be determined. Vitamin A was the only micronutrient investigated in this analysis that had an NRV available from complementary foods only, allowing conclusions around adequacy to be made. The Asian NZ group (n = 99) had lower mean group intakes than the non-Asian group (n = 526) for vitamin A (274µg vs. 329µg), and vitamin B12 (0.49µg vs. 0.65µg), and similar intakes for vitamin C (27.8mg vs. 28.5mg), and zinc (1.7mg vs. 1.9mg). Mean group iron intakes were the same for both groups (3.0mg). The AI for vitamin A from complementary foods (244µg) was exceeded by the mean intakes for both groups, suggesting that Vitamin A intakes were adequate. The complementary feeding period is a critical time for obtaining nutrients essential for development and growth. The results from this study indicate that Asian NZ infants have lower intakes of two of the micronutrients of interest than the non-Asian infants in NZ. However, future research is needed with the inclusion of infant milk intake in these groups to understand the total intake of the micronutrients. Vitamin A intakes do appear to be adequate in NZ infants.

Osteoporosis is a degenerative disease of the bone. The rate of bone loss is accelerated during the first postmenopausal years in women which results in their disproportionate prevalence of osteoporosis(2). Some of the factors contributing to the development and maintenance of bone mineral density (BMD) relate to diet, particularly the intake of protein, calcium and other micronutrients that play a crucial role in bone composition(3). The most common method of measuring BMD is dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) which generates a two-dimensional image of the scan site (typically spine, hip and/or forearm) to determine areal BMD (aBMD). However, new methods have recently emerged, including High Resolution peripheral Quantitative Computed Tomography (HRpQCT), that offer more accurate three-dimensional measurements of volumetric BMD (vBMD) and microstructure of distal tibia and radius(4). The aim of this study was to examine the differences in the dietary intake of nutrients that represent organic or inorganic components of the bone, in early postmenopausal women with different spine aBMD and tibia and radius vBMD levels. One hundred and fourteen healthy early postmenopausal women with a lumbar spine or total hip BMD T score > −2.5 (measured by DXA) were recruited as part of a larger interventional study. Dietary intake was recorded using a 297-point self-reported validated food frequency questionnaire(5) for assessing the intake of energy, macro and micronutrients. Physical activity was self-reported using the validated Active Australia Questionnaire. Years since menopause were self-reported. DXA and HRpQCT scans measured L1-L4 spine, proximal femur aBMD, and distal tibia and radius vBMD respectively. Non-parametric statistical tests examined differences in dietary intake and physical activity levels between women at different levels of aBMD and vBMD. Data reported as median and interquartile ranges. There were no significant differences observed in the total sample between tertiles of aBMD and vBMD, regarding nutrient intake. However, for women with less than 3 years since menopause (i.e., the time-period of accelerated bone loss), lower dietary intakes of energy [8,658(3,324) vs 10,068(3,688) kJ/day; p = 0.047], protein [94(29) vs 103(32) g/day; (p = 0.044)], sodium [1,927(992) vs 2,625(2,185) mg/d; (p = 0.044)], potassium [4,064(1,373) vs 5,121(2,377) mg/d; (p = 0.041)], calcium [969(325) vs 1,214(652) mg/d; (p = 0.028)] and zinc [10(3) vs 12(4) mg/d; (p = 0.005)] were observed for women with osteopenia (−1< L1-L4 aBMD T-score <2.5) compared to those with normal L1-L4 aBMD (i.e., T-score > −1). No significant differences were observed for women with more than 3 years since menopause, with the only exception of alcohol intake (p = 0.033), which was found to be lower in women with osteopenia compared to those with normal aBMD. These findings highlight the importance of targeting osteopenic women within the first 3 years following menopause as candidates for tailored dietary intervention programs for preventing osteoporosis.

The size distribution of unit particles of two New Zealand allophanes (An and Rh), in dilute (0.8% w/v) aqueous suspensions, has been determined by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). In addition, the specific surface area of the samples was measured by ethylene glycol retention, and their morphology examined by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The SANS data indicate that although both allophanes are somewhat polydisperse, the average diameter of their unit particles is significantly different, being 56 and 43 Å for allophane-An and allophane-Rh, respectively. Consistent with this observation, the specific surface area of allophane-Rh (897 mVg) is appreciably greater than that of allophane-An (638 m2/g). Under the electron microscope, both samples appear as aggregates of hollow spherules but HRTEM did not clearly distinguish between the two allophanes in that the largest population of spherules had diameters near 50 Å. Because of the assumptions and uncertainties involved in the SANS and surface area measurements, the data must be discussed in terms of their respective ratios. On this basis, the spherule diameter ratio is of the same order of magnitude as the inverse ratio of specific surface area. The latter value is also in reasonably good agreement with the corresponding ratios of phosphate adsorption capacity and BET nitrogen areas, derived from earlier studies.

This paper describes in detail phosphate minerals occurring in refractory clays of Missouri and their effect on the refractory degree of the clays. The minerals identified include carbonate-fluorapatite (francolite), crandallite, goyazite, wavellite, variscite and strengite. It is emphasized that these phosphates occur only in local isolated concentrations, and not generally in Missouri refractory clays.

The Missouri fireclay region comprises 2 districts, northern and southern, separated by the Missouri River. In this region, clay constitutes a major part of the Lower Pennsylvanian Cheltenham Formation. The original Cheltenham mud was an argillic residue derived from leaching and dissolution of pre-Pennsylvanian carbonates. The mud accumulated on a karstic erosion surface truncating the pre-Cheltenham rocks. Fireclays of the northern district consist mainly of poorly ordered kaolinite, with variable but minor amounts of illite, chlorite and fine-grained detrital quartz. Clays of the southern district were subjected to extreme leaching that produced well-ordered kaolinite flint clays. Local desilication formed pockets of diaspore, or more commonly, kaolinite, with oolite-like nubs or burls of diaspore (“burley” clay).

The phosphate-bearing materials have been studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectral analysis (SEM-EDS) and chemical analysis. Calcian goyazite was identified in a sample of diaspore, and francolite in a sample of flint clay. A veinlet of wavellite occurs in flint clay at one locality, and a veinlet of variscite-strengite at another locality.

The Missouri flint-clay-hosted francolite could not have formed in the same manner as marine francolite. The evidence suggests that the Cheltenham francolite precipitated from ion complexes in pore water, nearly simultaneously with crystallization of kaolinite flint clay from an alumina-silica gel. Calcian goyazite is an early diagenetic addition to its diaspore host. The wavellite and variscite-strengite veinlets are secondary, precipitated from ion complexes in ground water percolating along cracks in the flint clay. The flint clay host of the variscite-strengite veinlet contains strontian crandallite. All of the phosphates contain significant amounts of strontium. The source of P, Ca and Sr was the marine carbonates. Dissolution of these carbonates produced the argillic residue that became the primordial Cheltenham paludal mud, which ultimately altered to fireclay.

Preliminary firing tests show that the presence of phosphates lowers fusion temperature. However, it is not clear whether poor refractoriness is due to the presence of phosphates, per se, or to Ca, Sr and other alkaline elements present in the phosphates.

The Jamaican flower bat Phyllonycteris aphylla is categorized as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List. It is endemic to Jamaica and formerly known only from Stony Hill Cave, where there are an estimated c. 500 individuals. Previously declared extinct twice, its rediscovery in 2010 at Stony Hill Cave marked new hope for the conservation of this important species. Although little is known about its ecology, the species is presumed to be a cave-obligate rooster and to rely exclusively on so-called hot caves, which are defined by high ambient temperatures and low air quality. In March–April 2023, we surveyed bats at seven caves throughout Jamaica. At two of these, Green Grotto Caves, St. Ann, and Rock Spring Caverns, St. Mary, we captured both male and pregnant female P. aphylla. At Green Grotto Caves, we captured 24 P. aphylla, and 66 at Rock Spring Caverns. We believe Rock Spring Caverns to be one of the largest known roosts of P. aphylla. Neither of these sites are hot caves as both are moderated by flowing water, although warmer chambers may be more important to this bat than to other species. Further monitoring of these populations and continued exploration of other potential roosts are vital for the protection of this species.

Mitotic-inhibiting herbicides, like prodiamine and dithiopyr, are used to control annual bluegrass (Poa annua L.) preemergence in managed turfgrass; however, resistance to mitotic-inhibiting herbicides has evolved due to repeated applications of herbicide from a single mechanism of action. Three suspected resistant populations (R1, R2, and R3) were collected in Alabama and Florida and screened for resistance to prodiamine. Part of the α-tubulin gene was sequenced for known target-site mutations. Target-site mutations were reported in all three R populations, with each containing an amino acid substitution at position 239 from threonine to isoleucine (Thr-239-Ile). Previous research has indicated that the Thr-239-Ile mutation confers resistance to dinitroaniline herbicides in other species. Dose–response screens using prodiamine and dithiopyr were conducted and I50 values were calculated for R1, R2, and R3 using regression models based on seedling emergence. For prodiamine, I50 values for R1, R2, and R3 were 35.3, 502.7, and 91.5 g ai ha−1, respectively, resulting in 2.9-, 41.9-, and 7.6-fold resistance, respectively, when compared with a susceptible (S) population. For dithiopyr, I50 values for R1, R2, and R3 were 154.0, 114.2, and 190.1 g ai ha−1, respectively, resulting in 3.6-, 2.7-, and 4.5-fold resistance, respectively, when compared with an S population. When comparing I90 values with the highest labeled use rates, R2 had a 2.9-fold level of resistance to prodiamine, and R1, R2, and R3 had a 2.4-, 2.0-, and 3.2-fold levels of resistance to dithiopyr, respectively. This is the first report of a variable response in P. annua to prodiamine despite each R population possessing the same mutation.
