Gastrointestinal (GI) disorders are becoming increasingly common in young people in India and globally (1). Diet (eating habits, nutrient intake, and dietary diversity) and mental health (stress and anxiety levels) factors can independently and synergistically regulate gut health through dietary modulation of gut microbiota composition and gut-brain axis-related mechanistic pathways (2-3). However, few studies have investigated the associations between diet, mental health, and GI-related disturbances. Hence, this observational study was conducted to explore the possible effects of eating behaviors and stress and anxiety symptoms on self-reported measures of gastrointestinal health among 18-45-year-old adults in India.

A purposive cluster sampling method guided the recruitment of participants (n=407). Two non- consecutive day 24-hour diet recalls were conducted to estimate nutrient intakes and calculate Individual Diet Diversity (IDD) and Food Variety Scores (FVS). Gastrointestinal health was assessed using a validated instrument comprising 35 items related to gastric, small intestine, and colon function, and GI inflammation. Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10 scores 0 to 40 with higher scores representing higher levels of stress), and Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7 scores >5 (mild), >10 (moderate), and >15 (severe)) were used to evaluate perceived stress and anxiety (4-5). Socioeconomic status and eating habits were self-reported and the anthropometry measurements were recorded. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed using sociodemographic characteristics, anthropometry measurements, eating habits, and stress and anxiety levels as independent (predictor) variables, and composite gastrointestinal health risk scores as the dependent variables.

Participants reported mild anxiety (mean (M) = 7.09, standard deviation (SD)= 3.25) and moderate stress (M=18.44; SD= 9.89) with preponderance among females, higher age groups (> 35 years), and lower socioeconomic status. Overall, 38.8% and 45.3% were at high-risk score categories for gastric function and GI inflammation respectively. Higher energy and fat consumption, frequent breakfast skipping, and lower IDDS and FVS scores were associated with higher scores for stress and anxiety. Moreover, participants having moderate to severe anxiety reported a higher frequency of GI symptoms such as indigestion (M= 3.23 SD= 2.1-4.6, p= 0.023), excessive belching (M= 2.36 SD =1.21, p=0.043), and post-meal lower abdominal discomfort and cramps (M= 3.07, SD = 2.22, p < 0.001) as compared to those having nominal/mild anxiety. Age-adjusted regression models showed higher waist circumference (OR= 4.69, 95% CI =1.33- 7.28, p= 0.034), and stress scores (OR= 1.66, 95% CI= 1.32-1.90, p = 0.042), lower IDDS (OR= 2.34, 95% CI=1.80- 2.91, p <0.001) and presence of > 2 co-morbid conditions (OR= 8.12, 95% CI = 5.34- 11.21, p < 0.001) as predictors of higher GI disorder risk scores.

The preliminary findings of the study highlight associations between diet, stress, and GI health, presenting opportunities to modulate diet and optimize mental health to prevent and reduce the severity of GI disorders.

Parallel to the escalating burden of obesity is the steadily increasing prevalence of metabolic dysfunction associated steatotic liver diseases (MASLD), a chronic condition that progresses from simple steatosis to advanced stages of steatohepatitis, fibrosis, and cirrhosis (1-2). MASLD, regarded as the hepatic manifestation of metabolic syndrome is known to be exacerbated by unhealthy lifestyle choices and the presence of comorbidities such as diabetes, dyslipidemia, and obesity (3-4). Therefore, early identification of the general population at risk of MASLD and the development of multicomponent interventions that can prevent the progression of liver damage and mitigate associated adverse cardiometabolic health outcomes are important. Our study aimed to evaluate the effects of a lifestyle modification program on glucose levels, lipid profile, liver function, and body composition measures in community-living adults with elevated hepatic steatosis index in Mumbai, India.

Adults (n= 231, mean age 46.1(13.7) years), 58.6% men) were screened for risk of MASLD using a non-invasive screening tool, Hepatic Steatosis Index (HSI) (calculated as (HSI)= 8 x (ALT/AST ratio) +BMI (+2, if female; +2, if diabetes mellitus) (5). Eligible participants with HSI >36 (predictive of the presence of MASLD) were randomized to receive either a multicomponent lifestyle intervention (experimental group, EG) comprising weekly sessions of individualized dietary counseling (Participants having BMI >23kg/m2 (n = 36) received hypocaloric diets with 40% carbohydrates, 40% fat and 30% proteins (WLD) and those having BMI <22.9kg/m2 (n= 22) received weight maintenance diet (WMD) plans including 55% carbohydrates, 15% protein and 30% fats) and fortnightly group sessions of structured exercise and nutrition education or a standard of care package (control group, CG, n= 43) including general healthy eating and activity guidelines for the 8- week study duration. Paired t test and independent sample t tests were used to determine within and between group changes in variables from baseline to endline.

Overall, the prevalence of MASLD was 52.2%, 32.8% were hypertensive, and 26.7% and 15.4% had diabetes and hypertriglyceridemia respectively. The intervention (WLD) resulted in decreased weight (mean (M)= 3.4 kg, standard error (SE) = 1.88 k, p = 0.02), body fat percent (M = 2.2%, SE = 1.1%, p= 0.042), serum triglycerides (M=28.8mg/dL, SE 8.5mg/dL, p<0.001) and AST (M= 3.8 U/L, SE= 2.2U/L, p <0.05) values. The WMD group reported improvements in serum cholesterol levels, and ALT/ AST ratio as compared to CG (p <0.001). In WMD, HDL-C increased from 45.8 mg/dl to 47.2 mg/dl and the mean AST values reduced from 28.8 (10.6) U/L to 25.6 (9.9) U/L, but these changes were not statistically significant.

Multicomponent lifestyle modification programs integrating diet, physical activity and education are effective strategies to improve liver outcomes and optimize cardiometabolic health in people with MASLD.

Chickpea is a cool season, photothermal-sensitive crop, that is adversely affected by high temperatures (>35°C) and whose flowering is promoted by long-day conditions (>12 h). This prevents horizontal crop spread under a variety of agro-climatic conditions and the development of insensitive genotypes that perform well in all seasons. Therefore, a study was conducted to identify genotypes that are mature early, insensitive to photoperiod, high temperature and tolerant to drought stress. A set of 74 genotypes was evaluated under rainfed conditions in Kharif 2021 (off-season) to select eight promising early-maturing genotypes with high-yielding capacity. Then further investigations were conducted in five different seasons Late Kharif 2021, rabi 2021, summer 2022, early Kharif 2022 and Kharif 2022 to identify the genotypes with photothermo-insensitivity among the selected eight genotypes. With the exception of rabi 2021, each of these seasons were distinct from the chickpea's typical growing season. Among these eight, the stable genotypes which are performed better in all the seasons, especially in summer were considered, such as IPC 06-11, MNK-1, JG-14 and ICE 15654-A as a photothermo-insensitive, were able to flower and set pods with higher seed yield and, resulting in early maturity in a temperature range of 41.4/9.3°C with photoperiods of 13.1/10.9 h to reach in all seasons throughout the year. The heritability was more than 60%. Hence, these genotypes can be used as donor aids in the development of early maturing, drought stress tolerant and photothermo-insensitive chickpea.

Background: Recent evidence suggests that the cerebellum is involved in cognitive functions. Theta burst stimulation (TBS), a modality of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), on the cerebellum can change its contribution to working memory. Therefore, we hypothesize that excitatory intermittent TBS (iTBS) on the cerebellum would improve performance on working memory tasks, whereas inhibitory continuous TBS (cTBS) would disrupt it. Methods: As this is an ongoing study, nine participants (6 women) took part in this study so far. TBS was applied on the cerebellum bilaterally. All subjects received iTBS, cTBS, and sham iTBS in three sessions in random order. After TBS in each session, participants performed three types of working memory tasks: letter 2-back, digit span forward (DSF), and digit span backward (DSB). Results: The preliminary results suggest that participants performed better in the sham condition in the letter 2-back and the DSB tasks compared to the iTBS and cTBS conditions, but the results did not reach statistical significance due to the small sample size. Conclusions: The preliminary results show that the cerebellar contribution to working memory may be disrupted by TBS. As we gain more statistical power by recruiting more participants, we hope to further demonstrate the effects of cerebellar TBS on working memory.

Spent culture medium can provide valuable information regarding the physiological state of a bovine preimplantation embryos through non-invasive analysis of the sum/depleted metabolite constituents. Metabolomics has become of great interest as an adjunct technique to morphological and cleavage-rate assessment, but more importantly, in improving our understanding of metabolism. In this study, in vitro produced bovine embryos developing at different rates were evaluated using proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR). Spent culture medium from individually cultured embryos (2-cell to blastocyst stage) were divided into two groups based on their cleavage rate fast growing (FG) and slow growing (SG; developmentally delayed by 12–24 h), then analyzed by a 600 MHz NMR spectrometer. Sixteen metabolites were detected and investigated for sum/depletion throughout development. Data indicate distinct differences between the 4-cell SG and FG embryos for pyruvate (P < 0.05, n = 9) and at the 16-cell stage for acetate, tryptophan, leucine/isoleucine, valine and histidine. Overall sum/depletion levels of metabolites demonstrated that embryos produced glutamate, but consumed histidine, tyrosine, glycine, methionine, tryptophan, phenylalanine, lysine, arginine, acetate, threonine, alanine, pyruvate, valine, isoleucine/leucine, and lactate with an overall trend of higher consumption of these metabolites by FG groups. Principal component analysis revealed distinct clustering of the plain medium, SG, and FG group, signifying the uniqueness of the metabolomic signatures of each of these groups. This study is the first of its kind to characterize the metabolomic profiles of SG and FG bovine embryos produced in vitro using 1H NMR. Elucidating differences between embryos of varying developmental rates could contribute to a better understanding of embryonic health and physiology.

CuInS2 (CIS) quantum dots (QDs) with different diameters were prepared and their optical properties were studied. The optical band gap of QDs, as estimated by absorption spectrum, was found to decrease with increase in size. The stokes shift between absorption and photoluminescence peaks was observed to be larger (>100 meV) in all the three samples. This shows that the defect states available in the forbidden gap dominates the recombination mechanism. The variation in the emission peak with QD size, however, indicates that the relaxation dynamics in CIS QDs involves both excitonic level as well as the defect states.

Biochemical studies on the non-specific phosphomonoesterases of Fasciola hepatica have shown the presence of acid phosphomonoesterase active at pH 4·6 and two forms of alkaline phosphomonoesterases active at pH 7·6 and pH 9·6 respectively. Histochemical studies have located acid phosphomonoesterase in the walls of the intestinal caeca and to a lesser extent in the tegument. Alkaline phosphomonoesterase was found to occur mainly in the excretory ducts and to a lesser degree in the uterine wall. Glycogen was mainly concentrated in the yolk glands, parenchyma, mature eggs and the non-muscular regions of both oral and ventral suckers.

Hydrogenated amorphous silicon carbide alloys are being investigated as a possible top photoelectrode in photoelectrochemical cells used for hydrogen production through water splitting. In order to be used as such, it is important that the effects of carbon concentration on bonding, and thus on the electronic and optical properties, is well understood. Electron spin resonance experiments were performed under varying experimental conditions to study the defect concentrations. The dominant defects are silicon dangling bonds. At room temperature, the spin densities varied between 1016 and 1018 spins/cm3 depending on the carbon concentration. Photothermal deflection spectroscopy, which is an extremely sensitive measurement of low levels of absorption in thin films, was performed to investigate the slope of the Urbach tail. These slopes are 78 meV for films containing the lowest carbon concentration and 98 meV for those containing the highest carbon concentration.

Thin SiN films deposited by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) have been analyzed by a variety of analytical techniques including Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray reflectivity (XRR), and Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry/Hydrogen Forward Scattering (RBS/HFS) to collect data on bonding, density and chemical composition respectively. Both tensile and compressive SiN films have been deposited and analyzed. Mechanisms of stress formation in SiN thin films are discussed. It has been found that amount of bonded hydrogen as detected by FTIR is higher for compressive films compared to tensile SiN films. Amount of bonded hydrogen in a film is correlated well with tensile stress. Effect of deposition temperature and other process parameters on stress have been studied. Exposure of SiN films to elevated temperature after deposition lead to increase in tension and degradation in compressive stress. New approaches to stress generation in thin films like creation of multilayer film structures have been delineated.
