Progressive capillary waves on the interface between two homogeneous fluids confined in a channel with rigid walls parallel to the undisturbed interface are investigated. This problem is formulated as a system of integrodifferential equations that can be solved numerically via a boundary integral equation method coupled with series expansions of the unknown functions. With this highly accurate scheme and numerical continuation, we explore the global bifurcation of periodic travelling waves. It is found that there are two types of limiting profile, self-intersecting and boundary-touching, which appear either along a primary branch bifurcating from infinitesimal periodic waves or on an isolated branch existing above a certain finite amplitude. For particular sets of parameters, these two types of bifurcation curves can intersect, which can be viewed as a secondary bifurcation phenomenon occurring on the primary branch. Based on asymptotic and numerical analyses of the almost limiting waves, it is found that the boundary-touching solutions feature a circular geometry, i.e. the interface is pieced together by circular arcs of the same radius. A theoretical investigation yields the necessary conditions for the existence of these extreme waves, whereby we can predict the limiting configurations for most parameter sets. The comparisons between theoretical predictions and numerical results show good agreement.

Many works have considered two-dimensional free-surface flow over the edge of a plate, forming a waterfall, and with uniform horizontal flow far upstream. The flow is assumed to be steady and irrotational, whilst the fluid is assumed to be inviscid and incompressible. Gravity is also taken into account. In particular, amongst these works, numerical solutions for supercritical flows have been computed, utilising conformal mappings as well as a series truncation and collocation method. We present an extension to this work where a more appropriate expression is taken for the assumed form of the complex velocity. The justification of this lies in the behaviour of the waterfall flow far downstream and the wish to better encapsulate the parabolic nature of such a free-falling jet. New numerical results will be presented, demonstrating the improved shape of the new free-surface profiles. These numerical solutions will also be validated through comparisons with asymptotic solutions, in particular for flows with larger Froude numbers. For flows with Froude numbers closer to 1, we demonstrate that the revised complex velocity ansatz should be employed in place of the asymptotic solution. We present further adjustments to the method that lead to enhanced coefficient decay. The aforementioned adjustments are also applied to supercritical weir flows and similar improvements to the jet shape can be observed.

Two-dimensional periodic interfacial gravity waves travelling between two homogeneous fluids of finite depth are considered. A boundary-integral-equation method coupled with Fourier expansions of the unknown functions is used to obtain highly accurate solutions. Our numerical results show excellent agreement with those already obtained by Maklakov & Sharipov using a different scheme (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 856, 2018, pp. 673–708). We explore the global bifurcation mechanism of periodic interfacial waves and find three types of limiting wave profiles. The new families of solutions appear either as isolated branches or as secondary branches bifurcating from the primary branch of solutions.

The limiting configuration of interfacial solitary waves between two homogeneous fluids consisting of a sharp $120^{\circ }$ angle with an enclosed bubble of stagnant heavier fluid on top is investigated numerically. We use a boundary integral equation method to compute the almost limiting profiles which are nearly self-intersecting and thus extend the work of Pullin & Grimshaw (Phys. Fluids, vol. 31, 1988, pp. 3550–3559) by obtaining the overhanging solutions for very small density ratios. To further study the local configuration of the limiting profile, we propose a reduced model that replaces the $120^{\circ }$ angle with two straight solid walls intersecting at the bottom of the bubble. Using a series truncation method, a one-parameter family of solutions depending on the angle between the two solid walls (denoted by $\gamma$) is found. When $\gamma = {2{\rm \pi} }/{3}$, it is shown that the simplified model agrees well with the near-limiting wave profile if the density ratio is small, and thus provides a good local approximation to the assumed limiting configuration. Interesting solutions for other values of $\gamma$ are also explored.

This paper is concerned with the interaction of vertically sheared currents with two-dimensional flexural–gravity waves in finite depth. A third-order Stokes expansion is carried out and fully nonlinear computations are performed for symmetric, steadily travelling waves on a linear shear current. For upstream periodic waves, two global bifurcation mechanisms are discovered. Both branches bifurcate from infinitesimal periodic waves, with one stopping at another infinitesimal wave of different phase speed, and the other terminating at a stationary configuration. Generalised solitary waves are found for downstream waves. More surprisingly, the central pulse of the generalised solitary wave can become wide and flat as the computational domain is enlarged. This provides strong evidence for the existence of wave fronts in single-layer free-surface waves. Particle trajectories and streamline structures are studied numerically for the fully nonlinear equations. Two patterns, closed orbits and pure horizontal transport, are observed for both periodic and solitary waves in moving frames. The most striking phenomenon is the existence of net vertical transport of particles beneath some solitary waves due to wave–current interactions. The streamline patterns alternate between net vertical transport and a closed orbit, resulting in the formation of a series of nested cat's-eye structures.

In this paper, we consider two-dimensional steady free-surface flows where gravity is ignored, but the effects of surface tension are included. It is found that the existence of an additional solid boundary can allow for previously unseen limiting configurations as the surface tension tends to infinity. The free surface of these new solutions is formed of straight lines, arcs of circles and a point where the flow turns at a wall. These limiting configurations form endpoints of solution branches of capillary free-surface flows. Other endpoints of these branches include the surface tension free (i.e. free streamline) solution, and a solution whose free surface is composed simply of a straight line. The model we explore is flow incoming along a channel of constant width. One of the walls terminates, where the fluid is forcibly separated from the wall and a free boundary is formed. The other wall meets a second straight boundary with interior angle $\beta$. Far downstream the solution approaches a uniform stream. Making use of Cauchy's integral formula, the unknowns are expressed in terms of values on the boundary. The integral equations are then solved numerically. The solution space relative to the parameter values of the model is discussed.

We present a model for capillary-scale objects that bounce on a fluid bath as they also translate horizontally. The rebounding objects are hydrophobic spheres that impact the interface of a bath of incompressible fluid whose motion is described by linearised quasi-potential flow. Under a quasi-normal impact assumption, we demonstrate that the problem can be decomposed into an axisymmetric impact onto a quiescent bath surface, and the unforced evolution of the surface waves. We obtain a walking model that is free of impact parametrisation and we apply this formulation to model droplets walking on a vibrating bath. We show that this model accurately reproduces experimental reports of bouncing modes, impact phases and time-dependent wave field topography for bouncing and walking droplets. Moreover, we revisit the modelling of horizontal drag during droplet impacts to incorporate the effects of the changes in the pressed area during droplet–surface contacts. Finally, we show that this model captures the recently discovered phenomenon of superwalkers.

We consider a potential flow model of axisymmetric waves travelling on a ferrofluid jet. The ferrofluid coats a copper wire, through which an electric current is run. The induced azimuthal magnetic field magnetises the ferrofluid, which in turn stabilises the well known Plateau–Rayleigh instability seen in axisymmetric capillary jets. This model is of interest because the stabilising mechanism allows for axisymmetric magnetohydrodynamical solitary waves. A numerical scheme capable of computing steady periodic, solitary and generalised solitary wave solutions is presented. It is found that the solution space for the model is very similar to that of the classical problem of two-dimensional gravity–capillary waves.

A finite difference scheme is proposed to solve the problem of axisymmetric Taylor bubbles rising at a constant velocity in a tube. A method to remove singularities from the numerical scheme is presented, allowing accurate computation of the bubbles with the inclusion of both gravity and surface tension. This paper confirms the long-held belief that the solution space of the axisymmetric Taylor bubble for small surface tension is qualitatively similar to that of the plane Taylor bubble. Furthermore, evidence suggesting that the solution selection mechanism associated with plane bubbles also occurs in the axisymmetric case is presented.

We present a fully predictive model for the impact of a smooth, convex and perfectly hydrophobic solid onto the free surface of an incompressible fluid bath of infinite depth in a regime where surface tension is important. During impact, we impose natural kinematic constraints along the portion of the fluid interface that is pressed by the solid. This provides a mechanism for the generation of linear surface waves and simultaneously yields the pressure applied on the impacting masses. The model compares remarkably well with data of the impact of spheres and bouncing droplet experiments, and is completely free of any of impact parametrisation.

In this paper, fully nonlinear non-symmetric periodic gravity–capillary waves propagating at the surface of an inviscid and incompressible fluid are investigated. This problem was pioneered analytically by Zufiria (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 184, 1987c, pp. 183–206) and numerically by Shimizu & Shōji (Japan J. Ind. Appl. Maths, vol. 29 (2), 2012, pp. 331–353). We use a numerical method based on conformal mapping and series truncation to search for new solutions other than those shown in Zufiria (1987c) and Shimizu & Shōji (2012). It is found that, in the case of infinite-depth, non-symmetric waves with two to seven peaks within one wavelength exist and they all appear via symmetry-breaking bifurcations. Fully exploring these waves by changing the parameters yields the discovery of new types of non-symmetric solutions which form isolated branches without symmetry-breaking points. The existence of non-symmetric waves in water of finite depth is also confirmed, by using the value of the streamfunction at the bottom as the continuation parameter.

A numerical study of fully nonlinear waves propagating through a two-dimensional deep fluid covered by a floating flexible plate is presented. The nonlinear model proposed by Toland (Arch. Rat. Mech. Anal., vol. 289, 2008, pp. 325–362) is used to formulate the pressure exerted by the thin elastic sheet. The symmetric solitary waves previously found by Guyenne & Părău (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 713, 2012, pp. 307–329) and Wang et al. (IMA J. Appl. Maths, vol. 78, 2013, pp. 750–761) are briefly reviewed. A new class of hydroelastic solitary waves which are non-symmetric in the direction of wave propagation is then computed. These asymmetric solitary waves have a multi-packet structure and appear via spontaneous symmetry-breaking bifurcations. We study in detail the stability properties of both symmetric and asymmetric solitary waves subject to longitudinal perturbations. Some moderate-amplitude symmetric solitary waves are found to be stable. A series of numerical experiments are performed to show the non-elastic behaviour of two interacting stable solitary waves. The large response generated by a localised steady pressure distribution moving at a speed slightly below the minimum of the phase speed (called the transcritical regime in the literature) is also examined. The direct numerical simulation of the fully nonlinear equations with a single load reveals that in this range the generated waves are of finite amplitude. This includes a perturbed depression solitary wave, which is qualitatively similar to the large response observed in experiments. The excitations of stable elevation solitary waves are achieved by applying multiple loads moving with a speed in the transcritical regime.

We present new families of gravity–capillary solitary waves propagating on the surface of a two-dimensional deep fluid. These spatially localised travelling-wave solutions are non-symmetric in the wave propagation direction. Our computation reveals that these waves appear from a spontaneous symmetry-breaking bifurcation, and connect two branches of multi-packet symmetric solitary waves. The speed–energy bifurcation curve of asymmetric solitary waves features a zigzag behaviour with one or more turning points.

The behaviour of two-dimensional finite blobs of conducting viscous fluid in a Hele-Shaw cell subject to an electric field is considered. The time-dependent free boundary problem is studied both analytically using the Schwarz function of the free boundary and numerically using a boundary integral method. Various problems are considered, including (i) the behaviour of an initially circular blob of conducting fluid subject to an electric point charge located arbitrarily within the blob, (ii) the delay in cusp formation on the free boundary in sink-driven flow due to a strategically placed electric charge and (iii) the stability of exact steady solutions having both hydrodynamic and electric forcing.

Nonlinear travelling waves on a two-dimensional inviscid fluid sheet are investigated when the sheet is bounded above and below by two thin elastic plates. Symmetric and antisymmetric solution branches are identified, together with a pair of bifurcation branches. It is shown that far along the branches the solutions approach limiting configurations that correspond to static solutions valid in the absence of fluid forcing.

The problem of waves propagating on the surface of a two-dimensional ideal fluid of infinite depth bounded above by an elastic sheet is studied with asymptotic and numerical methods. We use a nonlinear elastic model that has been used to describe the dynamics of ice sheets. Particular attention is paid to forced and unforced dynamics of waves having near-minimum phase speed. For the unforced problem, we find that wavepacket solitary waves bifurcate from nonlinear periodic waves of minimum speed. When the problem is forced by a moving load, we find that, for small-amplitude forcing, steady responses are possible at all subcritical speeds, but for larger loads there is a transcritical range of forcing speeds for which there are no steady solutions. In unsteady computations, we find that if the problem is forced at a speed in this range, very large unsteady responses are obtained, and that when the forcing is released, a solitary wave is generated. These solitary waves appear stable, and can coexist within a sea of small-amplitude waves.

In this paper, the unsteady evolution of two-dimensional fully nonlinear free-surface gravity–capillary solitary waves is computed numerically in infinite depth. Gravity–capillary wavepacket-type solitary waves were found previously for the full Euler equations, bifurcating from the minimum of the linear dispersion relation. Small and moderate amplitude elevation solitary waves, which were known to be linearly unstable, are shown to evolve into stable depression solitary waves, together with a radiated wave field. Depression waves and certain large amplitude elevation waves were found to be robust to numerical perturbations. Two kinds of collisions are computed: head-on collisions whereby the waves are almost unchanged, and overtaking collisions which are either almost elastic if the wave amplitudes are both large or destroy the smaller wave in the case of a small amplitude wave overtaking a large one.

Binder & Vanden-Broeck (2005) showed there are no subcritical or critical solutions satisfying the radiation condition for steady flows past a flat plate. By using a weakly nonlinear analysis, it is shown that such flows exist for a curved plate. Fully nonlinear solutions are computed by a boundary integral equation method, and new nonlinear solutions for supercritical and generalized critical flows past a curved plate are presented.

Steady two-dimensional free surface flow past a semi-infinite flat plate is considered. The vorticity in the flow is assumed to be constant. For large values of the Froude number F, an analytical relation between F, the vorticity parameter ω and the steepness s of the waves in the far field is derived. In addition numerical solutions are calculated by a boundary integral equation method.

The problem of withdrawal through a point sink of water from a fluid of finite depth with a free surface is considered. Assuming the flow to be axisymmetric, it is found that there is a maximum Froude number at which such flows can exist. This maximum corresponds to the formation of a secondary stagnation ring on the free surface. This result extends earlier work on this problem. Comparison is made with a small Froude number solution and past experimental results.
