We present the first unbiased survey of neutral hydrogen absorption in the Small Magellanic Cloud. The survey utilises pilot neutral hydrogen observations with the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder telescope as part of the Galactic Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder neutral hydrogen project whose dataset has been processed with the Galactic Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder-HI absorption pipeline, also described here. This dataset provides absorption spectra towards 229 continuum sources, a 275% increase in the number of continuum sources previously published in the Small Magellanic Cloud region, as well as an improvement in the quality of absorption spectra over previous surveys of the Small Magellanic Cloud. Our unbiased view, combined with the closely matched beam size between emission and absorption, reveals a lower cold gas faction (11%) than the 2019 ATCA survey of the Small Magellanic Cloud and is more representative of the Small Magellanic Cloud as a whole. We also find that the optical depth varies greatly between the Small Magellanic Cloud’s bar and wing regions. In the bar we find that the optical depth is generally low (correction factor to the optically thin column density assumption of $\mathcal{R}_{\mathrm{HI}} \sim 1.04$ ) but increases linearly with column density. In the wing however, there is a wide scatter in optical depth despite a tighter range of column densities.

NGC 5128 galaxy is a giant elliptical galaxy located in the Centaurus group of galaxies at 3.8 Mpc. We aim to study the star formation history (SFH) of two different fields of the galaxy. The northeastern field (Field 1) is located at a distance of 18.8 kpc, while the southern field (Field 2) is at 9.9 kpc. We use a photometric method that is based on identifying long period variable (LPV) stars and asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars, as they are strong tracers of star formation and galaxy evolution due to their luminosity and variability; 395 LPVs in Field 1 and 671 LPVs in Field 2 have been identified. These two fields present similar SFHs, although the SF rate of Field 2 is more enhanced. We find that the galaxy has three major star formation episodes t ∼ 800 Myr ago, t ∼ 3.2 Gyr ago, and t ∼ 10 Gyr ago, where t is look-back time. The rate of star formation at ∼ 800 Myr ago agrees with previous studies suggesting that the galaxy experienced a merger around that time. Furthermore, NGC 5128 has experienced a lower star formation rate in its recent history which could have been driven by jet-induction star formation and multiple outbursts of AGN activity in this galaxy, as well as a minor merger around 400 Myr ago.

We discuss the first detection of deuterated water (HDO) in extragalactic hot cores. The HDO 211–212 line has been detected with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) toward hot cores N 105–2 A and 2 B in the N 105 star-forming region in the low-metallicity Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), the nearest star-forming galaxy. We compared the HDO line luminosity (LHDO) measured toward two hot cores in N 105 to those observed toward a sample of 17 Galactic hot cores and found that the observed values of LHDO for the LMC hot cores fit very well into the LHDO trends with Lbol and metallicity observed toward the Galactic hot cores. Our results indicate that LHDO seems to be largely dependent on the source luminosity, but metallicity also plays a role. We provide a rough estimate of the H2O column density and abundance ranges toward N 105–2 A and 2 B by assuming that HDO/H2O toward the LMC hot cores is the same as that observed in the Milky Way; the obtained values are systematically lower than those measured in the Galactic hot cores. The spatial distribution and velocity structure of the HDO emission in N 105–2 A is consistent with HDO being the product of the low-temperature dust grain chemistry.

IC 10 as a starburst dwarf galaxy in the Local Group (LG) has a large population of newly formed stars that are massive and intrinsically very bright in comparison with other LG galaxies. Using the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT) with the Wide Field Camera (WFC) in the i-band and V-band, we performed an optical monitoring survey to identify the most evolved asymptotic giant branch stars (AGBs) and red supergiant stars (RSGs) in this star-forming galaxy, which can be used to determine the star formation history (SFH). The E(B - V) as an effective factor for obtaining the precise magnitude of stars is measured for each star using a 2D dust map (SFD98) to obtain a total extinction for each star in both the i-band and V-band. We obtained the photometric catalog for 53579 stars within the area of 0.07 deg2 (13.5 kpc2), of which 762 stars are classified as variable candidates after removing the foreground stars and saturated ones from our catalog. To reconstruct the SFH for IC 10, we first identified 424 long-period variable (LPV) candidates within the area of two half-light radii (2rh) from the center of the galaxy. We estimated the recent star formation rate (SFR) at ∼ 0.32 yr-1 for a constant metallicity Z = 0.0008, showing the galaxy is currently undergoing high levels of star formation. Also, a total stellar mass of is obtained within 2rh for that metallicity.

Due to observational constraints, our detailed knowledge of stellar populations, formation, and evolution of galaxies is limited to a few dozen galaxies located in the Local Group. The Local Group of galaxies offers a unique opportunity to construct the formation histories and probe the structure and dynamics of many dwarf galaxies surrounding the Milky Way and Andromeda and of isolated dwarf galaxies. In this regard, we monitored the majority of galaxies in the Local Group, including the M33 galaxy and satellites galaxies surrounding the Milky Way and Andromeda galaxy, as well as isolated dwarf galaxies. We identified stellar populations and based on light curve analysis, the cool evolved stars pulsating in the fundamental mode were identified. In this paper, first, we will present the results we obtained for SFH and dust production rate in individual galaxies separately to answer how different types of galaxies have been formed and evolved over cosmic time. Then, we will discuss whether the mass return from dusty evolved stars can provide enough gas reservoirs to sustain the star formation or even rejuvenate the dwarf galaxy, as some seem to harbor relatively young stars.

Local Group (LG), the nearest and most complete galactic environment, provides valuable information on the formation and evolution of the Universe. Studying galaxies of different sizes, morphologies, and ages can provide this information. For this purpose, we chose the And IX dSph galaxy, which is one of the observational targets of the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT) survey. A total of 50 long-period variables (LPVs) were found in And IX in two filters, Sloan i' and Harris V at a half-light radius of 2.5 arcmin. The And IX’s star formation history (SFH) was constructed with a maximum star formation rate (SFR) of about 0.00082 ± 0.00031 M⊙ yr−1, using LPVs as a tracer. The total mass return rate of LPVs was calculated based on the spectral energy distribution (SED) of about 2.4 × 10−4 M⊙ yr−1. The distance modulus of 24.56−0.15+0.05 mag was estimated based on the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB).

We have conducted a near-infrared monitoring campaign at the UK InfraRed Telescope (UKIRT), of the Local Group spiral galaxy M 33 (Triangulum). In this paper, we present the dust and gas mass-loss rates by the pulsating Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars and red supergiants (RSGs) across the stellar disc of M 33.

One of the ways to understand the genesis and evolution of the universe is to know how galaxies have formed and evolved. In this regard, the study of star formation history (SFH) plays an important role in the accurate understanding of galaxies. In this paper, we used long-period variable stars (LPVs) for estimating the SFH in the Andromeda galaxy (M31). These cool stars reach their peak luminosity in the final stage of their evolution also their birth mass is directly related to their luminosity. Therefore, using stellar evolution models, we construct the mass function and hence the star formation history.

The nearby Magellanic Clouds system covers more than 200 square degrees on the sky. Much of it has been mapped across the electromagnetic spectrum at high angular resolution and sensitivity –X-ray (XMM-Newton), UV (UVIT), optical (SMASH), IR (VISTA, WISE, Spitzer, Herschel), radio (ATCA, ASKAP, MeerKAT). This provides us with an excellent dataset to explore the galaxy populations behind the stellar-rich Magellanic Clouds. We seek to identify and characterise AGN via machine learning algorithms on this exquisite data set. Our project focuses not on establishing sequences and distributions of common types of galaxies and active galactic nuclei (AGN), but seeks to identify extreme examples, building on the recent accidental discoveries of unique AGN behind the Magellanic Clouds.

The determination of the star formation history is a key goal for understanding galaxies. In this regard, nearby galaxies in the Local Group offer us a complete suite of galactic environment that is perfect for studying the connection between stellar populations and galaxy evolution. In this paper, we present the star formation history of M31 using long period variable stars that are prime targets for studying the galaxy formation and evolution because of their evolutionary phase. In this method, at first, we convert the near-infrared K-band magnitude of evolved stars to mass and age and from this we reconstruct the star formation and evolution of the galaxy.

The evolution of galaxies is driven by the birth and death of stars. AGB stars are at the end points of their evolution and therefore their luminosities directly reflect their birth mass; this enables us to reconstruct the star formation history. These cool stars also produce dust grains that play an important role in the temperature regulation of the interstellar medium (ISM), chemistry, and the formation of planets. These stars can be resolved in all of the nearby galaxies. Therefore, the Local Group of galaxies offers us a superb near-field cosmology site. Here we can reconstruct the formation histories, and probe the structure and dynamics, of spiral galaxies, of the many dwarf satellite galaxies surrounding the Milky Way and Andromeda, and of isolated dwarf galaxies. It also offers a variety of environments in which to study the detailed processes of galaxy evolution through studying the mass-loss mechanism and dust production by cool evolved stars. In this paper, I will first review our recent efforts to identify mass-losing Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars and red supergiants (RSGs) in Local Group galaxies and to correlate spatial distributions of the AGB stars of different mass with galactic structures. Then, I will outline our methodology to reconstruct the star formation histories using variable pulsating AGB stars and RSGs and present the results for rates of mass–loss and dust production by pulsating AGB stars and their analysis in terms of stellar evolution and galaxy evolution.

Dwarf galaxies in the Local Group (LG) represent a distinct as well as diverse family of tracers of the earliest phases of galaxy assembly and the processing resulting from galactic harrassment. Their stellar populations can be resolved and used as probes of the evolution of their host galaxy. In this regard, we present the first reconstruction of the star formation history (SFH) of them using the most evolved AGB stars that are long period variable (LPV). LPV stars trace stellar populations as young as ∼ 30 Myr to as old as the oldest globular clusters. For the nearby, relatively massive and interacting gas-rich dwarf galaxies, the Magellanic Clouds, we found that the bulk of the stars formed ∼ 10 Gyr ago for the LMC, while the strongest episode of star formation in the SMC occurred a few Gyr later. A peak in star formation around 0.7 Gyr ago in both Clouds is likely linked to their recent interaction. The Andromeda satellite pair NGC147/185 show different histories; the main epoch of star formation for NGC 185 occurred 8.3 Gyr ago, followed by a much lower, but relatively constant star formation rate (SFR). In the case of NGC 147, the SFR peaked only 6.9 Gyr ago, staying intense until ∼ 3 Gyr ago. Star formation in the isolated gas-rich dwarf galaxy IC 1613 has proceeded at a steady rate over the past 5 Gyr, without any particular dominant epoch. Due to lack of sufficient data, we have conducted an optical monitoring survey at the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT) of 55 dwarf galaxies in the LG to reconstruct the SFH of them uniformly. The observations are made over ten epochs, spaced approximately three months apart, as the luminosity of LPV stars varies on timescales of months to years. The system of galactic satellites of the large Andromeda spiral galaxy (M31) forms one of the key targets of our monitoring survey. We present the first results in the And I dwarf galaxy, where we discovered 116 LPVs among over 10,000 stars.

Determining the star formation history (SFH) is key to understand the formation and evolution of dwarf galaxies. Recovering the SFH in resolved galaxies is mostly based on deep colour–magnitude diagrams (CMDs), which trace the signatures of multiple evolutionary stages of their stellar populations. In distant and unresolved galaxies, the integrated light of the galaxy can be decomposed, albeit made difficult by an age–metallicity degeneracy. Another solution to determine the SFH of resolved galaxies is based on evolved stars; these luminous stars are the most accessible tracers of the underlying stellar populations and can trace the entire SFH. Here we present a novel method based on long period variable (LPV) evolved asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars and red supergiants (RSGs). We applied this method to reconstruct the SFH for IC1613, an irregular dwarf galaxy at a distance of 750 kpc. Our results provide an independent confirmation that no major episode of star formation occurred in IC1613 over the past 5 Gyr.

Amongst the dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, the isolated irregular one, IC 10 is one of the most interesting galaxies, with strong star forming activity and the highest density of Wolf-Rayet stars. Undergoing a starburst phase, having numerous HII regions and being bright in all wavebands, makes it an exquisite galaxy to study the internal and external processes that continue to affect dwarf galaxies 14 Gyr since the Big Bang. In this study, we present a new deep and precise optical monitoring survey of IC 10 using the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT) with the wide field camera (WFC). We performed observations at nine epochs spaced between three to four months apart between 2015 and 2017. We identified Long Period Variable stars (LPVs), Asymptotic Giant Branch stars (AGBs) and Red Super Giant stars (RSGs) to determine the star formation history and chemical evolution of IC 10.

As the opening review to the focus meeting “Stellar Behemoths: Red Supergiants across the Local Universe”, I here provide a brief introduction to red supergiants, setting the stage for subsequent contributions. I highlight some recent activity in the field, and identify areas of progress, areas where progress is needed, and how such progress might be achieved.

We present preliminary results from spectroscopy obtained with PACS and SPIRE onboard the Herschel Space Observatory of a sample of massive Young Stellar Objects in the Magellanic Clouds. We analyse key gas-phase cooling species (Oi], [Cii], H2O, CO, OH), in order to characterise the physical conditions in these metal-poor environments.

A survey of the Milky Way disk and the Magellanic System at the wavelengths of the 21-cm atomic hydrogen (H i) line and three 18-cm lines of the OH molecule will be carried out with the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder telescope. The survey will study the distribution of H i emission and absorption with unprecedented angular and velocity resolution, as well as molecular line thermal emission, absorption, and maser lines. The area to be covered includes the Galactic plane (|b| < 10°) at all declinations south of δ = +40°, spanning longitudes 167° through 360°to 79° at b = 0°, plus the entire area of the Magellanic Stream and Clouds, a total of 13 020 deg2. The brightness temperature sensitivity will be very good, typically σT≃ 1 K at resolution 30 arcsec and 1 km s−1. The survey has a wide spectrum of scientific goals, from studies of galaxy evolution to star formation, with particular contributions to understanding stellar wind kinematics, the thermal phases of the interstellar medium, the interaction between gas in the disk and halo, and the dynamical and thermal states of gas at various positions along the Magellanic Stream.

The UK InfraRed Telescope/UFTI instrument was used to analyse stars in the central region (square kpc) of the M33 galaxy over 3 nights in August 2005 with observations in K-band. Photometry was obtained for all stars by fitting appropriate PSF models, using DAOPHOT package (Stetson 1987). Around 18500 stars were detected. A master image was produced by applying an appropriate shift to each image and combining all 30 images. The final catalogue was obtained by assigning unique ID numbers to all stars and calibrating instrumental magnitudes. Comparing the UFTI and the UIST catalogues (Javadi et al. 2011) shows that a larger number of stars were detected with the UFTI, reaching a K-band limiting magnitude of 18.5 mag. Cross correlation methods were employed to cross match our catalogue with a previous monitoring survey in the near-infrared, the UIST catalogue. As a result, we assigned J magnitude and J-K color index to those stars which were found in both catalogues. Using these stars, a color-magnitude diagram was produced which shows populations of RGB, AGB and Carbon stars. Isochrones from Marigo et al. (2008) for solar metallicity and a distance modulus of 24.9 magnitude were used to identify different populations in the central region of the M33 galaxy. We will merge the UFTI catalogue with the UIST and the WFCAM, to get better coverage of stars in the central square kiloparsec.

Commission 35 consists of members of the International Astronomical Union whose research is concerned with the structure and evolution of stars in all parts of the H-R diagram. Their interests range from various aspects of stellar interior physics, such as convection, diffusion, rotation, magnetic fields, to asteroseismology and the prediction of the evolutionary and nucleosynthetic histories of stars that are of vital importance for our understanding of stellar populations and galactic chemical evolution.

We present a study of the infrared properties of 4922 spectroscopically confirmed massive stars in the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, focusing on the active OB star population. Besides OB stars, our sample includes yellow and red supergiants, Wolf-Rayet stars, Luminous Blue Variables (LBVs) and supergiant B[e] stars. We detect a distinct Be star sequence, displaced to the red, and find a higher fraction of Oe and Be stars among O and early-B stars in the SMC, respectively, when compared to the LMC, and that the SMC Be stars occur at higher luminosities. We also find photometric variability among the active OB population and evidence for transitions of Be stars to B stars and vice versa. We furthermore confirm the presence of dust around all the supergiant B[e] stars in our sample, finding the shape of their spectral energy distributions (SEDs) to be very similar, in contrast to the variety of SED shapes among the spectrally variable LBVs.
