The use of binomial coefficients in place of factorials to shorten the calculation of exact probabilities for 2 × 2 and 2 × r contingency tables is discussed. A useful set of inequalities for estimating the cumulative probabilities in the tail of the distribution from the probability of a single table is given. A table of binomial coefficients with four significant places and n through 60 is provided.

Severe longitudinally extensive transverse myelitis (LETM) can cause quadriplegia, marked sensory dysfunction, and respiratory failure. Some patients are unresponsive to conventional immune therapy. We report two cases of severe immune-mediated LETM requiring intensive care admission that failed to respond to high-dose corticosteroids, plasma exchange, intravenous immunoglobulin, and rituximab. Disease cessation and significant recovery was achieved after cyclophosphamide induction. In patients with severe acute immune-mediated LETM who fail to respond to corticosteroids and plasma exchange, cyclophosphamide induction should be considered. This agent and regimen provides a robust immunosuppressive response and can be induced rapidly. Cyclophosphamide effects and supportive evidence are discussed.

Greenhouse and laboratory experiments were conducted to determine the effect of DPX-PE350 on the herbicidal activity of fluazifop-P on large crabgrass. Greenhouse experiments indicated that fluazifop-P activity was antagonized by DPX-PE350. This antagonism was reduced by increasing fluazifop-P rates or by applying DPX-PE350 after fluazifop-P. Applying DPX-PE350 24 h prior to fluazifop-P reduced fluazifop-P activity more than applying it 10 min prior. The effect of DPX-PE350 application to large crabgrass on extractable acetyl-CoA carboxylase activity, and the effect of DPX-PE350 on acetyl-CoA carboxylase activity in vitro also was studied. Applying DPX-PE350 to large crabgrass prior to protein extraction did not reduce fluazifop-P inhibition of acetyl CoA carboxylase activity in vitro. The presence of DPX-PE350 in the enzyme assay mix did not affect fluazifop-P inhibition of acetyl-CoA carboxylase activity. The effect of DPX-PE350 on uptake, translocation, and metabolism of fluazifop-P was considered. DPX-PE350 did not affect uptake of fluazifop-P by large crabgrass. Applying DPX-PE350 24 h prior to fluazifop-P decreased translocation of fluazifop-P out of the treated leaf 44 to 53% whereas mixing DPX-PE350 with fluazifop-P decreased fluazifop-P translocation only 15 to 17%. Metabolism of fluazifop-P was not affected by applications of DPX-PE350. These studies suggest that the antagonism of fluazifop-P activity by DPX-PE350 is due to decreased translocation of fluazifop-P out of the treated leaf.

Greenhouse trials were conducted to evaluate graminicidal resistance of selected ornamental grasses. Blue fescue cultivars ‘Blue Glow’, ‘Sea Urchin’, ‘Spring Blue’, and ‘Superba’ were resistant to 1× (medium use rate) and 2× rates of fenoxaprop, fluazifop-P, quizalofop, and sethoxydim, whereas fountain grass, ravenna grass, and switchgrass were sensitive. Minor (<20%) visible phytotoxicity was observed on some fescues treated with the 2× rate of fluazifop-P at 14 but not at 69 days after treatment (DAT). Fountain grass, ravenna grass, and switchgrass exhibited severe (>70%) phytotoxicity from all herbicides 69 DAT. Mortality of non-fescues ranged from 55% (fountain grass) to 96% (ravenna grass).

A multiobjective optimization model integrating with high-resolution geographical data was applied to examine the optimal switchgrass supply system in Tennessee that considers both feedstock cost and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the system. Results suggest that the type of land converted into switchgrass production is crucial to both plant gate cost and GHG emissions of feedstock. In addition, a tradeoff relationship between cost and GHG emissions for the switchgrass supply is primarily driven by the type of land converted. The imputed cost of lowering GHG emissions in the feedstock supply system was also calculated based on the derived tradeoff curve.

Biofuel production from lignocellulosic biomass (LCB) is being advocated as an alternative to fossil-based transportation fuels in the United States. LCB-based biofuel production has the potential to mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the transportation sector and to enhance rural economic activity through more intense use of agricultural lands (English et al., 2006). The Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) established in 2005 and revised in the Energy Independence and Security Act 2007 mandates 21 billion gallons of advanced biofuel (other than ethanol derived from corn starch) available for transportation use by 2022 with 16 billion gallons to be produced from LCB feedstock (U.S. Congress, 2007). Based on the recently revised One Billion Ton Update study (U. S. Department of Energy, 2011), considerable LCB feedstock, including dedicated energy crops, will be required to fulfill this goal. Notwithstanding the potential availability of LCB feedstock to meet the mandate, the cost of LCB feedstock will be an important factor influencing the sustainability of an LCB-based biofuel industrial sector.

Differential response of three weed species to prosulfuron was examined through studies of acetolactate synthase (ALS) sensitivity, uptake, translocation, and metabolism of the herbicide. Sensitivity of common cocklebur, common lambsquarters, and sicklepod ALS to prosulfuron was similar with I50 values of 3.3, 4.5, and 8.8 nM, respectively. Absorption of the herbicide increased with time for all three weed species. Percent absorption 2 d after application for common cocklebur, common lambsquarters, and sicklepod was 8, 33, and 26%, respectively. An average of 53% of the absorbed herbicide remained in the treated leaves of common cocklebur, 80% in common lambsquarters, and 93% in sicklepod. Approximately 33, 15, and 5% of the absorbed herbicide was translocated into the upper shoots of common cocklebur, common lambsquarters, and sicklepod, respectively. Metabolism of 14C-prosulfuron 1, 2, and 4 d after application was greater in sicklepod than in common lambsquarters or common cocklebur. The results suggest a combination of differential rates of translocation and metabolism may account for the differing sensitivity of these weeds at the whole plant level.

In greenhouse studies, the calculated I50 (herbicide application resulting in 50% inhibition of shoot regrowth) in tall fescue was approximately 0.004 kg/ha for both sethoxydim and haloxyfop. In red fescue, the I50 for sethoxydim and haloxyfop was 9.4 kg/ha and 0.04 kg/ha, respectively. As measured in crude cell extracts of tall fescue, incorporation of 14C-acetyl-coenzyme A into fatty acids was inhibited 62 and 71% by 10 μM sethoxydim and 10 μM haloxyfop, respectively. In red fescue, 10 μM haloxyfop inhibited 14C-acetyl-CoA incorporation into fatty acids by 29%, whereas 10 μM sethoxydim had no effect. The I50 for inhibition of acetyl-coenzyme A carboxylase activity in tall fescue with sethoxydim and haloxyfop was 6.9 and 5.8 μM, respectively. In red fescue the I50 for haloxyfop was 118 μM. Sethoxydim concentrations as high as 1 mM had little effect on acetyl-coenzyme A carboxylase activity in red fescue. These results suggest that acetyl-coenzyme A carboxylase is a sensitive site of action for sethoxydim and haloxyfop in tall fescue, and that tolerance to these herbicides in red fescue is due to the presence of a more tolerant form of the enzyme.

Characteristics of glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine] uptake for as long as 3 days by plant cells were studied using suspension-cultured potato (Solanum tuberosum L. cv. ‘Red Pontiac’ and S. brevidens Phil.) cells. An experimental system was developed wherein uptake was assayed in a reduced salt medium that minimized cell growth yet maintained cell viability. Glyphosate uptake was nonlinear over time; an immediate rapid uptake phase was followed by uptake at a decreased rate that continued through 72 h. Glyphosate uptake was the same in both an experimental uptake medium (reduced salt and sucrose, no hormones) and in the complete growth medium used for routine cell growth. The pattern of glyphosate uptake was similar with both Red Pontiac and S. brevidens cells, though uptake was greater in Red Pontiac cells. Glyphosate uptake was not inhibited by 1 mM CaSO4, MgSO4, MnSO4, or ZnSO4. Rather, uptake was inhibited by the absence of salts at 8 h, and ZnSO4 and MnSO4 increased uptake. Similarly, increasing concentrations (0 to 5 mM) of CaSO4 and CaCl2 did not inhibit uptake, whereas the absence of either salt of Ca2+ decreased uptake. Increasing concentrations of (NH4)2 SO4 (0 to 150 mM) did not affect glyphosate uptake, but (NH4)2 SO4 at 50 mM and above was toxic to the cells.

Herbicide absorption and translocation patterns were determined following a wet blade method of application to dogfennel stems. Treatment consisted of severing stems with a pruning shear blade containing 5 μl of [14C]-triclopyr or [14C]-clopyralid solution. More than 73 or 82% of applied [14C]-triclopyr or [14C]-clopyralid was absorbed immediately, and uptake increased to more than 90%, 60 min after treatment. Both radiolabeled compounds appeared in the roots as soon as 12 h after treatment. By 48 h, 5 to 7% of the [14C] label was present in the roots, and 7 to 10% was exuded from the roots.

BAS 145 138, CGA 154 281, and 1,8 naphthalic anhydride were evaluated as seed treatments to safen 'Silver Xtra Sweet,’ ‘How Sweet It Is,’ ‘Zenith,’ and 'Sweetie 76’ sweet corn against nicosulfuron injury. Nicosulfuron POST injured sweet corn by causing slight leaf chlorosis and leaf base widening in Sweetie 76 and severe plant injury and total yield loss in Silver Xtra Sweet. Naphthalic anhydride or CGA 154 281 provided limited or no safening activity, respectively, and resulted in plant height reduction when applied alone. BAS 145 138 reduced nicosulfuron injury to Silver Xtra Sweet and prevented visible injury from nicosulfuron in How Sweet It Is, Zenith, and Sweetie 76.

LAB 145 138 (LAB) was evaluated as a safener to improve sweet corn tolerance to nicosulfuron applied POST alone or with terbufos applied in the planting furrow or bentazon applied POST. To ensure enhanced injury for experimental purposes, nicosulfuron was applied at twice the registered rate alone or mixed with bentazon at the six- to seven-leaf growth stage of corn previously treated with the highest labeled rate of terbufos 15 G formulation. LAB applied as a seed treatment (ST) or POST at the two- to three-, four- to five-, or six- to seven-leaf growth stages reduced height reduction and yield loss from nicosulfuron applied POST in combination with terbufos applied in-furrow. LAB applied POST at the four- to five-leaf growth stage was most effective in preventing injury from this treatment, with yield reduced only 8% compared with 54% from the nicosulfuron and terbufos treatment. LAB applied POST at the eight- to nine-leaf growth stage did not alleviate injury. With the nicosulfuron, terbufos, and bentazon combination, LAB applied POST at the three- to four- or six- to seven-leaf growth stages decreased height reduction and yield loss caused by this combination, with LAB at the three- to four-leaf growth stage being most effective.

Greenhouse and field studies were conducted to investigate the responses of container-grown dogfennel, multiflora rose, and purple loosestrife to clopyralid or triclopyr applied to plants from a pruning shear blade. Clopyralid or triclopyr was diluted with water to various concentrations and placed on one side of a pruning shear blade in final volumes of either 1 or 5 μl. The shears were then used to sever and treat stems. Results indicated that 20% triclopyr concentrations in 5-μl total volume (360 μg active) gave ≥ 96% reductions of foliar regrowth in dogfennel, multiflora rose, and purple loosestrife 70, 42, and 56 days after treatment (DAT), respectively. The same delivery rate for clopyralid gave 96% dogfennel control 70 DAT. Subsequent visual ratings with multiflora rose (105 DAT) and purple loosestrife (260 DAT) confirmed that early reductions in biomass were good indicators of long-term control.

Laboratory experiments were conducted to determine the physiological mechanism of tall morningglory resistance to the experimental cotton herbicide DPX-PE350. Tall morningglory, a resistant species, was compared with entireleaf morningglory, a sensitive species, to evaluate inhibition at the site of action, the acetolactate synthase (ALS) enzyme (E.C.4.1.3.18), by DPX-PE350 as well as uptake, translocation, and metabolism of DPX-PE350. No differences were found between species in the concentration required to inhibit the ALS enzyme by 50% (I50), or in uptake and translocation of the herbicide. Tall morningglory metabolized the herbicide more rapidly than did entireleaf morningglory. Tall morningglory contained 3.6 and 1.4 times more metabolites of DPX-PE350 than did entireleaf morningglory 6 and 24 h after treatment, respectively. Tall morningglory produced an O-desmethyl metabolite from the 3,5-dimethoxypyrimidine moiety of DPX PE350 that was not found in entireleaf morningglory. These data suggest that the ability of tall morningglory to more rapidly metabolize DPX-PE350, possibly through the production of the pyrimidinyldesmethyl metabolite, may be the mechanism of resistance to DPX-PE350.

Greenhouse studies were conducted to evaluate 14C-glufosinate absorption, translocation, and metabolism in glufosinate-resistant corn, goosegrass, large crabgrass, and sicklepod. Glufosinate-resistant corn plants were treated at the four-leaf stage, whereas goosegrass, large crabgrass, and sicklepod were treated at 5, 7.5, and 10 cm, respectively. All plants were harvested at 1, 6, 24, 48, and 72 h after treatment (HAT). Absorption was less than 20% at all harvest intervals for glufosinate-resistant corn, whereas absorption in goosegrass and large crabgrass increased from approximately 20% 1 HAT to 50 and 76%, respectively, 72 HAT. Absorption of 14C-glufosinate was greater than 90% 24 HAT in sicklepod. Significant levels of translocation were observed in glufosinate-resistant corn, with 14C-glufosinate translocated to the region above the treated leaf and the roots up to 41 and 27%, respectively. No significant translocation was detected in any of the weed species at any harvest timing. Metabolites of 14C-glufosinate were detected in glufosinate-resistant corn and all weed species. Seventy percent of 14C was attributed to glufosinate metabolites 72 HAT in large crabgrass. Less metabolism was observed for sicklepod, goosegrass, and glufosinate-resistant corn, with metabolites composing less than 45% of detectable radioactivity 72 HAT.

Greenhouse studies were conducted to evaluate absorption, translocation, and metabolism of 14C-glufosinate in glufosinate-resistant cotton, nontransgenic cotton, Palmer amaranth, and pitted morningglory. Cotton plants were treated at the four-leaf stage, whereas Palmer amaranth and pitted morningglory were treated at 7.5 and 10 cm, respectively. All plants were harvested at 1, 6, 24, 48, and 72 h after treatment (HAT). Absorption of 14C-glufosinate was greater than 85% 24 h after treatment in Palmer amaranth. Absorption was less than 30% at all harvest intervals for glufosinate-resistant cotton, nontransgenic cotton, and pitted morningglory. At 24 HAT, 49 and 12% of radioactivity was translocated to regions above and below the treated leaf, respectively, in Palmer amaranth. Metabolites of 14C-glufosinate were detected in all crop and weed species. Metabolism of 14C-glufosinate was 16% or lower in nontransgenic cotton and pitted morningglory; however, metabolism rates were greater than 70% in glufosinate-resistant cotton 72 HAT. Intermediate metabolism was observed for Palmer amaranth, with metabolites comprising 20 to 30% of detectable radioactivity between 6 and 72 HAT.

The objective of this research was to describe proportional differences across time and region in management practices among southern cotton farmers who experienced glyphosate-resistant (GR) weeds on their farms earlier than those who experienced them later and among farmers who were closest to one of four historical outbreak epicenters: Lauderdale County, TN; Macon County, GA; Edgecombe County, NC; and Terry County, TX. A mail survey was conducted with cotton farmers in 2012 from 13 southern, cotton-producing states. Survey responses on practices used by farmers were classified into three broad categories of labor, mechanical/tillage/chemical (MTC), and cultural. Proportions of respondents using practices from each category were identified by time and region; across which, proportional-difference tests were conducted. Results indicated respondents encountering GR weeds earlier were more likely than farmers who experienced them later to use the three broad-category practices (labor, 98 vs. 92%; MTC, 95 vs. 89%; and cultural, 86 vs. 76%) and specific practices, including hooded sprayers (76 vs. 58%), in-season herbicide change (83 vs. 60%), and field-border management (60 vs. 35%). Also, respondents closest to Lauderdale County were more likely than farmers closest to Edgecombe County to use broad-labor practices (99 vs. 91%) and specific practices, including hand hoeing (96 vs. 84%), hand spraying (49 vs. 31%), spot spraying (76 vs. 59%), wick applicator (13 vs. 11%), and field-border management (58 vs. 39%). Education programs on weed management can be developed and tailored according to the time and regional differences to provide effective information and communication channels to farmers.

Interference for 40 d after emergence (DAE) of corn, cotton, peanut, and snap bean by four glyphosate-resistant (GR) and four glyphosate-susceptible (GS) Palmer amaranth populations from Georgia and North Carolina was compared in the greenhouse. Greater interference from Palmer amaranth, measured as crop height and fresh weight reduction, was noted in cotton and peanut compared with corn or snap bean. Crop height 15 to 40 DAE was reduced similarly by GR and GS populations. Crop fresh weight, however, was reduced 25 and 19% in the presence of GS and GR populations, respectively. Measured as percent reduction in fresh weight, GR and GS populations of Palmer amaranth were controlled similarly by glufosinate, lactofen, paraquat, and trifloxysulfuron applied POST. Atrazine and dicamba controlled GR populations more effectively than GS populations.
