We review research suggesting that several of the functions attributed to fear, in the target article's fearful ape hypothesis, also apply to supplication and appeasement emotions. These emotions facilitate support provisioning from others and the formation and maintenance of cooperative relationships. We therefore propose that the fearful ape hypothesis be expanded to include several other distinctively human emotional tendencies.

Background
Numerous theories posit different core features to borderline personality disorder (BPD). Recent advances in network analysis provide a method of examining the relative centrality of BPD symptoms, as well as examine the replicability of findings across samples. Additionally, despite the increase in research supporting the validity of BPD in adolescents, clinicians are reluctant to diagnose BPD in adolescents. Establishing the replicability of the syndrome across adolescents and adults informs clinical practice and research. This study examined the stability of BPD symptom networks and centrality of symptoms across samples varying in age and clinical characteristics.
MethodsCross-sectional analyses of BPD symptoms from semi-structured diagnostic interviews from the Collaborative Longitudinal Study of Personality Disorders (CLPS), the Methods to Improve Diagnostic Assessment and Service (MIDAS) study, and an adolescent clinical sample. Network attributes, including edge (partial association) strength and node (symptom) expected influence, were compared.
ResultsThe three networks were largely similar and strongly correlated. Affective instability and identity disturbance emerged as relatively central symptoms across the three samples, and relationship difficulties across adult networks. Differences in network attributes were more evident between networks varying both in age and in BPD symptom severity level.
ConclusionsFindings highlight the relative importance of affective, identity, and relationship symptoms, consistent with several leading theories of BPD. The network structure of BPD symptoms appears generally replicable across multiple large samples including adolescents and adults, providing further support for the validity of the diagnosis across these developmental phases.

Osiurak and Reynaud highlight a major omission of models of cumulative technological culture. I propose an additional problematic omission: pride. By taking this emotion into account, we can address the question of why humans seek to learn, teach, and innovate – three processes essential to cumulative technological culture (CTC). By fostering achievement, prestige, and social learning, pride provides a pivotal piece of the puzzle.

Summary
Self-conscious emotions of guilt, shame, and pride are some of the most private emotions people experience, and yet they are central emotions for governing collective and organizational life. A missed deadline, a forgotten email, or a poor performance review can evoke feelings of guilt or shame. Victory over a competitor, a successful product launch, or a compliment from a colleague can evoke feelings of pride. Organizational scholars have theorized about how self-conscious emotions affect a range of employee outcomes such as responses to layoffs (Brockner, Davy, & Carter, 1985), positive inequity (Adams, 1965; Walster, Walster, & Berscheid, 1978), and institutional reproduction (Douglas Creed, Hudson, Bokhuysen, & Smith-Crowe, 2004), but empirical evidence in support of these claims has been sparse, particularly in comparison to research on other emotional experiences such as positive and negative affectivity.

Summary
What drives us to climb that highest mountain? And what do we subsequently feel when we realize we are extremely bad at mountain climbing and decide to fake an injury to get helicoptered back to base camp? The emotions that shape these events and our responses to them – pride and shame – play a central role in motivating and regulating many of people’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviors (Tangney & Tracy, 2012). These self-conscious emotions drive people to work hard to succeed (Stipek, 1995; Weiner, 1985) and to behave in moral and pro-social ways in their relationships (Baumeister, Stillwell, & Heatherton, 1994; Leith & Baumeister, 1998; Retzinger, 1987). Yet despite their centrality to psychological functioning, pride and shame did not receive the same attention from early emotion researchers as the so-called basic emotions, such as joy, fear, and sadness (Campos, 1995; Fischer & Tangney, 1995).

Gervais & Fessler reintroduce the concept of a sentiment as a framework for conceptualizing contempt, a construct with both attitudinal and emotional components. We propose that humility might also fit this mold. We review recent findings regarding the antecedents, phenomenology, and functional consequences of humility, and discuss why conceptualizing it as a sentiment may advance our understanding of this construct.

OBJECTIVE
Nasal swab culture is the standard method for identifying methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) carriers. However, this method is known to miss a substantial portion of those carrying MRSA elsewhere. We hypothesized that the additional use of a sponge to collect skin culture samples would significantly improve the sensitivity of MRSA detection.
DESIGNHospitalized patients with recent MRSA infection were enrolled and underwent MRSA screening of the forehead, nostrils, pharynx, axilla, and groin with separate swabs and the forehead, axilla, and groin with separate sponges. Staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec) typing was conducted by polymerase chain reaction (PCR).
PATIENTSA total of 105 MRSA patients were included in the study.
RESULTSAt least 1 specimen from 56.2% of the patients grew MRSA. Among patients with at least 1 positive specimen, the detection sensitivities were 79.7% for the swabs and 64.4% for the sponges. Notably, 86.4% were detected by a combination of sponges and nasal swab, and 72.9% were detected by a combination of pharyngeal and nasal swabs, whereas only 50.9% were detected by nasal swab alone (P<0.0001 and P=0.0003, respectively). Most isolates had SCCmec type II (59.9%) and IV (35.7%). No correlation was observed between the SCCmec types and collection sites.
CONCLUSIONScreening using a sponge significantly improves MRSA detection when used in addition to screening with the standard nasal swab.
