This study investigates the spatial distribution of inertial particles in turbulent Taylor–Couette flow. Direct numerical simulations are performed using a one-way coupled Eulerian–Lagrangian approach, with a fixed inner-wall Reynolds number of 2500 for the carrier flow, while the particle Stokes number ($St$) varies from 0.034 to 1 for the dispersed phase. We first examine the issue of preferential concentration of particles near the outer-wall region. Employing two-dimensional Voronoï analysis, we observe a pronounced particle clustering with increasing $St$, particularly evident in regions of low fluid velocity. Additionally, we investigate the concentration balance equation, inspired by the work of Johnson et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 883, 2020, A27), to examine the particle radial distribution. We discern the predominant sources of influence, namely biased sampling, turbophoresis and centrifugal effects. Across all cases, centrifugal force emerges as the primary driver, causing particle migration toward the outer wall. Biased sampling predominantly affects smaller inertial particles, driving them toward the inner wall due to sampling within Taylor rolls with inward radial velocity. Conversely, turbophoresis primarily impacts larger inertial particles, inducing migration towards both walls where turbulent intensity is weaker compared with the bulk. With the revealed physics, our work provides a basis for predicting and controlling particle movement and distribution in industrial applications.

The innate immune response is the host’s first line of defense, promptly activated upon pathogen invasion. Its precise and rapid activation relies on innate immune cells (IICs). Upon recognizing danger signals postinfection or injury, they release various innate immune effectors to eliminate invading pathogens or damaged cells, thus supporting the host’s immune homeostasis. Epigenetic modifications, by shaping chromatin structures, orchestrate specific gene transcription patterns to regulate the lineage development, differentiation, and activation of IICs. This intricate process ultimately contributes to effective pathogen clearance and IICs’ healthy development and differentiation. To thoroughly elucidate the epigenetic mechanisms underlying the development and differentiation of IICs, this review first introduces the fundamental concepts and latest advancements in this field. We then delve into how the immune microenvironment or other signaling molecules shape the epigenetic landscapes of distinct IIC subsets during their lineage development and differentiation. Furthermore, we summarize how different epigenetic modification profiles mediate specific transcriptional patterns, thereby influencing the lineage development, differentiation, and activation of IICs in response to infections or injuries. Finally, we discuss several unresolved critical issues from the perspective of targeting epigenetic modifications to modulate the innate immune response. In summary, this review aims to uncover the molecular mechanisms underlying the development, differentiation, and activation of IICs from an epigenetic perspective, providing theoretical foundations for scientific and medical researchers pursuing disease treatments.

Jicha is a Bronze Age settlement located next to the upper Mekong River in the Hengduan Mountains of Yunnan, south-west China. Recent excavations have revealed details of successive occupation and copper-base industrial activity. The site's position and chronology provide evidence of north–south demographic movement and technological transmission along the eastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau corridor.

The Righi–Leduc heat flux generated by the self-generated magnetic field in the ablative Rayleigh–Taylor instability driven by a laser irradiating thin targets is studied through two-dimensional extended-magnetohydrodynamic simulations. The perturbation structure gets into a low magnetization state though the peak strength of the self-generated magnetic field could reach hundreds of teslas. The Righi–Leduc effect plays an essential impact both in the linear and nonlinear stages, and it deflects the total heat flux towards the spike base. Compared to the case without the self-generated magnetic field included, less heat flux is concentrated at the spike tip, finally mitigating the ablative stabilization and leading to an increase in the velocity of the spike tip. It is shown that the linear growth rate is increased by about 10% and the amplitude during the nonlinear stage is increased by even more than 10% due to the feedback of the magnetic field, respectively. Our results reveal the importance of Righi–Leduc heat flux to the growth of the instability and promote deep understanding of the instability evolution together with the self-generated magnetic field, especially during the acceleration stage in inertial confinement fusion.

Fast neutron absorption spectroscopy is widely used in the study of nuclear structure and element analysis. However, due to the traditional neutron source pulse duration being of the order of nanoseconds, it is difficult to obtain a high-resolution absorption spectrum. Thus, we present a method of ultrahigh energy-resolution absorption spectroscopy via a high repetition rate, picosecond duration pulsed neutron source driven by a terawatt laser. The technology of single neutron count is used, which results in easily distinguishing the width of approximately 20 keV at 2 MeV and an asymmetric shape of the neutron absorption peak. The absorption spectroscopy based on a laser neutron source has one order of magnitude higher energy-resolution power than the state-of-the-art traditional neutron sources, which could be of benefit for precisely measuring nuclear structure data.

A pulsed fast neutron source is critical for applications of fast neutron resonance radiography and fast neutron absorption spectroscopy. However, due to the large transversal source size (of the order of mm) and long pulse duration (of the order of ns) of traditional pulsed fast neutron sources, it is difficult to realize high-contrast neutron imaging with high spatial resolution and a fine absorption spectrum. Here, we experimentally present a micro-size ultra-short pulsed neutron source by a table-top laser–plasma wakefield electron accelerator driving a photofission reaction in a thin metal converter. A fast neutron source with source size of approximately 500 μm and duration of approximately 36 ps has been driven by a tens of MeV, collimated, micro-size electron beam via a hundred TW laser facility. This micro-size ultra-short pulsed neutron source has the potential to improve the energy resolution of a fast neutron absorption spectrum dozens of times to, for example, approximately 100 eV at 1.65 MeV, which could be of benefit for high-quality fast neutron imaging and deep understanding of the theoretical model of neutron physics.

Compared to the streamwise instability, the cross-flow instability in high-enthalpy flows has received relatively less attention, but the latter is of vital importance in the flow transition for practical configurations. This work aims to investigate the cross-flow primary and secondary instabilities in hypersonic and high-enthalpy boundary layers, considering thermochemical non-equilibrium (TCNE) effects. The numerical tools adopted include a high-order shock-fitting solver, nonlinear parabolized stability equations and secondary instability theory (SIT). The flow over a swept parabola is calculated at a free-stream Mach number of 16. It is found that TCNE has a destabilizing effect on the cross-flow mode with a non-catalytic wall. Two important non-dimensional parameters are summarized to explain this effect. One is the ratio between the wall and boundary-layer edge temperatures, and the other is the cross-flow Mach number. Due to nonlinear effects, the stationary cross-flow vortices evolve and exhibit the classic rollover structures as in lower-speed flows. Two different disturbance energy norms are used in the energy budget analysis to classify the secondary cross-flow instability modes. The results from SIT highlight the importance of type-IV modes in TCNE flows at the downwash region of the vortex. The type-IV modes arise with the combined contribution from the wall-normal (on top and trough of the vortex) and spanwise (in the downwash region) production terms. The type-I mode is dominant in the calorically perfect gas case with an adiabatic wall, whereas the type-IV mode has the largest growth rate in the TCNE cases irrespective of wall temperature variation.

We propose a conjectural list of Fano manifolds of Picard number $1$ with pseudoeffective normalised tangent bundles, which we prove in various situations by relating it to the complete divisibility conjecture of Francesco Russo and Fyodor L. Zak on varieties with small codegree. Furthermore, the pseudoeffective thresholds and, hence, the pseudoeffective cones of the projectivised tangent bundles of rational homogeneous spaces of Picard number $1$ are explicitly determined by studying the total dual variety of minimal rational tangents (VMRTs) and the geometry of stratified Mukai flops. As a by-product, we obtain sharp vanishing theorems on the global twisted symmetric holomorphic vector fields on rational homogeneous spaces of Picard number $1$.

In [2], Beilinson–Lusztig–MacPherson (BLM) gave a beautiful realization for quantum $\mathfrak {gl}_n$ via a geometric setting of quantum Schur algebras. We introduce the notion of affine Schur superalgebras and use them as a bridge to link the structure and representations of the universal enveloping superalgebra ${\mathcal U}_{\mathbb Q}(\widehat {\mathfrak {gl}}_{m|n})$ of the loop algebra $\widehat {\mathfrak {gl}}_{m|n}$ of ${\mathfrak {gl}}_{m|n}$ with those of affine symmetric groups ${\widehat {{\mathfrak S}}_{r}}$ . Then, we give a BLM type realization of ${\mathcal U}_{\mathbb Q}(\widehat {\mathfrak {gl}}_{m|n})$ via affine Schur superalgebras.

The first application of the realization of ${\mathcal U}_{\mathbb Q}(\widehat {\mathfrak {gl}}_{m|n})$ is to determine the action of ${\mathcal U}_{\mathbb Q}(\widehat {\mathfrak {gl}}_{m|n})$ on tensor spaces of the natural representation of $\widehat {\mathfrak {gl}}_{m|n}$ . These results in epimorphisms from $\;{\mathcal U}_{\mathbb Q}(\widehat {\mathfrak {gl}}_{m|n})$ to affine Schur superalgebras so that the bridging relation between representations of ${\mathcal U}_{\mathbb Q}(\widehat {\mathfrak {gl}}_{m|n})$ and ${\widehat {{\mathfrak S}}_{r}}$ is established. As a second application, we construct a Kostant type $\mathbb Z$ -form for ${\mathcal U}_{\mathbb Q}(\widehat {\mathfrak {gl}}_{m|n})$ whose images under the epimorphisms above are exactly the integral affine Schur superalgebras. In this way, we obtain essentially the super affine Schur–Weyl duality in arbitrary characteristics.

This study performs global stability/receptivity analyses of hypersonic flows over a swept blunt body with infinite span. For the first time, we obtain the characteristics of the leading attachment-line mode to the variation of sweep angles from $20^{\circ }$ to $70^{\circ }$. The global eigenfunctions exhibit the characteristics of the attachment-line instability at the leading edge. At the same time, cross-flow (at small sweep angles) or second Mack mode (at larger sweep angles) dominates further downstream. We establish an adjoint-based bi-orthogonal eigenfunction system to address the receptivity problem of such flows to any external forces and boundary perturbations. The receptivity analyses indicate that the global modes are the most responsive to external forces and surface perturbations applied in the vicinity of the attachment line, regardless of the sweep angles. It is also proven that the present global extension of the bi-orthogonal eigenfunction system can be successfully applied to complex hypersonic flows.

This study aims to shed light on hypersonic attachment-line instabilities with large sweep Mach numbers. Highly swept flows over a cold cylinder that give rise to large sweep Mach numbers are studied. High-fidelity basic flows are obtained by solving full Navier–Stokes equations with a high-order shock-fitting method. Using local and global stability theories, an attachment-line mode is found to be dominant for the laminar–turbulent transition along the leading edge that agrees qualitatively with the experimental observations (Gaillard et al., Exp. Fluids, vol. 26, 1999, pp. 169–176). The behaviour of this mode explains the reason for the transition occurring earlier as the sweep Mach number is above 5. In addition, this attachment-line mode is absent if the basic flow is calculated with boundary layer assumptions, indicating that the influence of inviscid flow outside the boundary layer cannot be ignored as is normally done. It is clearly demonstrated that the global modes display the features of both attachment-line modes, as in sweep Hiemenz flow, and the second Mack modes further downstream along the surface. In the large sweep Mach number regime, the attachment-line mode is inviscid in nature and its growth rate increases with the sweep angle. In contrast, in the lower sweep Mach number regime, the attachment-line instability exhibits the features of viscous Tollmien–Schlichting waves, and the sweep angle first increases but then decreases the maximum growth rate.

We propose an image-based flow decomposition developed from the two-dimensional (2-D) tensor empirical wavelet transform (EWT) (Gilles, IEEE Trans. Signal Process., vol. 61, 2013, pp. 3999–4010). The idea is to decompose the instantaneous flow data, or their visualisation, adaptively according to the averaged Fourier supports for the identification of spatially localised structures. The resulting EWT modes stand for the decomposed flows, and each accounts for part of the spectrum, illustrating fluid physics with different scales superimposed in the original flow. With the proposed method, decomposition of an instantaneous three-dimensional (3-D) flow becomes feasible without resorting to its time series. Examples first focus on the interaction between a jet plume and 2-D wake, where only experimental visualisations are available. The proposed method is capable of separating the jet/wake flows and their instabilities. Then the decomposition is applied to an early-stage boundary layer transition, where direct numerical simulations provided a full dataset. The tested inputs are the 3-D flow data and their visualisation using streamwise velocity and $\lambda _{2}$ vortex identification criterion. With both types of inputs, EWT modes robustly extract the streamwise-elongated streaks, multiple secondary instabilities and helical vortex filaments. Results from 2-D stability analysis justify the EWT modes that represent the streak instabilities. In contrast to proper orthogonal decomposition or dynamic modal decomposition that extract spatial modes according to energy or frequency, EWT provides a new strategy for decomposing an instantaneous flow from its spatial scales.

We investigated high-resistivity cadmium zinc telluride (CdZnTe):In single crystals annealed in hydrogen to reveal the passivation effect of defects. An overall reduction in the concentration of defect levels induced by annealing was obviously observed by thermally stimulated current measurements. There is a large decrease by 56.51% in the concentration of secondly ionized Cd vacancies (T3) after hydrogenation. The concentration of firstly ionized Cd vacancies (T2) was a little bit lower (17.99%) in the hydrogenated CZT crystals. The formation of neutral InH complex and lower occupation of VCd by In dopant would result in a significant decrease (68.31%) in the trap density of ${\rm In}_{\rm Cd}^ +$ related shallow donor (T1) after hydrogenation. The bulk resistivity was calculated from I–V characteristic curves to be ~1.97 × 1010 Ωcm before annealing and ~1.78 × 1010 Ωcm after annealing. Hall measurements also reveal n-type conduction for the hydrogenated crystals. Electron mobility was fitted to be about 110 cm2/Vs before annealing and 488 cm2/Vs after annealing, demonstrating better carrier transport properties. Electron mobility-lifetime product could be fitted to be about 3.60 × 10−4 cm2/V before annealing and 5.45 × 10−4 cm2/V after annealing, demonstrating better detector performances.

Preoperative nutritional status plays an important role in predicting postoperative outcomes. Prognostic Nutritional Index (PNI) and Controlling Nutritional Status (CONUT) are good tools to assess patients’ nutritional status. They have been used in predicting outcomes in various malignancies, but few studies have focused on pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PDAC) patients. Totally, 306 PDAC patients were enrolled. The propensity score matching (PSM) method was introduced to eliminate the baseline inequivalence. Patients with different PNI (or CONUT) scores showed inequivalence baseline characteristics, and patients with compromised nutritional status were related with a more advanced tumour stage. After PSM, the baseline characteristics were well balanced. Both low PNI (≤45) and high CONUT (≥3) were independent risk factors for poor overall survival (P < 0·05), and the result remained the same after PSM. Survival analysis demonstrated both patients with low PNI and high CONUT score were associated with poorer survival, and the result remained the same after PSM. The results of AUC indicated that CONUT might have a higher sensitivity and specificity in predicting complications and survival. Preoperative low PNI (≤45) and high CONUT (≥3) scores might be reliable predictors of prognosis and surgical complications in PDAC patients. Compared with PNI, CONUT might be more effective.

This study aims to ascertain the long-term epidemic trends of malaria and evaluates the probability of achieving the eradication goal by 2020 in China. Data on malaria incidence and deaths were extracted from the China Information System for Disease Control and Prevention. The epidemic trends by sex, age and spatial distribution and predictions of malaria were estimated by using Joinpoint and Poisson regressions. From 1950 to 2016, 227 668 374 malaria cases were reported in China, with an annualised average incidence of 337.02 (336.98–337.07, 95% confidence interval (CI)) per 100 000 population. The incidence decreased with an average annual per cent change (AAPC) of −11.4% (−16.6 to −6.0). There were 36 085 malaria deaths, with an annualised average mortality of 0.534 (0.529–0.540) per 1 000 000 population. The mortality decreased with an AAPC of −8.7% (−13.7 to −3.4). The predicted number of malaria cases and deaths for 2020 is 2 562 and 10, respectively, and zero for indigenous cases. The disease burden of malaria dramatically decreased in China. Though, the goal of malaria elimination is realistic by 2020 in China, routine clinical and entomological surveillance should be continually conducted, especially for the cross-border areas and imported malaria cases.

Underground Nuclear Astrophysics in China (JUNA) will take the advantage of the ultra-low background in Jinping underground lab. High current accelerator with an ECR source and detectors were commissioned. JUNA plans to study directly a number of nuclear reactions important to hydrostatic stellar evolution at their relevant stellar energies. At the first period, JUNA aims at the direct measurements of 25Mg(p,γ)26 Al, 19F(p,α) 16 O, 13C(α, n) 16O and 12C(α,γ) 16O near the Gamow window. The current progress of JUNA will be given.
