Coherent structures over two distinct, organized wall perturbations – a transverse sinusoidal bump with and without small-scale longitudinal grooves – are studied using direct numerical simulations. Large-scale spanwise rollers (SRs) form via shear layer rollup past the bump peak, enveloping a large separation bubble (SB) for both a smooth wall (SW) and a grooved wall (GW). In a GW, small-scale alternatingly spinning jets emanating from the crests’ corners merge with the shear layer, altering the SRs compared with SRs in a SW. The underlying coherence of the highly turbulent SRs is educed via phase-locked ensemble averaging. Coherent vorticity contours of SRs are ellipses tilted downward, hence causing co-gradient Reynolds stress. The limited streamwise length of SB precludes SR tumbling, unlike in a free shear layer. The coherent field reveals minibubbles attached to the bump’s downstream wall with circulation opposite to that of the SB – they are larger, stronger and more numerous in GW than in SW – reducing skin friction. Compared with SW, the swirling jets in GW increase coherent production while decreasing incoherent production. Additionally, the jets push the SRs to travel faster and farther before reattachment. The SB experiences two different modes of oscillation due to high-frequency advection of the shear layer SR and low-frequency breathing of the SB, where the former dominates in GW and the latter in SW. Negative production is caused by counter-rotating vortex dipoles inducing flow ejections (for both SW and GW) and single vortices penetrating the grooves – both occurring in the region of flow acceleration.

In the contemporary maritime industry, characterised by intense competition, reduced visibility due to heavy fog is a primary cause of accidents, significantly impairing maritime operational efficiency. Consequently, investigating foggy weather navigation safety holds crucial practical significance. This paper, through an analysis and synthesis of various aspects of foggy navigation technology, including foggy navigation regulations at different ports, fog warnings, foggy vessel environmental perception and foggy auxiliary navigation systems, explores the key issues concerning vessel navigation during foggy conditions from a scientific perspective. This discussion encompasses the aspects of regulatory frameworks, standardisation, and the development of intelligent and responsive onboard equipment. Finally, the paper offers a glimpse into potential strategies for fog navigation.

This study aimed to develop a predictive tool for identifying individuals with high antibody titers crucial for recruiting COVID-19 convalescent plasma (CCP) donors and to assess the quality and storage changes of CCP. A convenience sample of 110 plasma donors was recruited, of which 75 met the study criteria. Using univariate logistic regression and random forest, 6 significant factors were identified, leading to the development of a nomogram. Receiver operating characteristic curves, calibration plots, and decision curve analysis (DCA) evaluated the nomogram’s discrimination, calibration, and clinical utility. The nomogram indicated that females aged 18 to 26, blood type O, receiving 1 to 2 COVID-19 vaccine doses, experiencing 2 symptoms during infection, and donating plasma 41 to 150 days after symptom onset had higher likelihoods of high antibody titres. Nomogram’s AUC was 0.853 with good calibration. DCA showed clinical benefit within 9% ~ 90% thresholds. CCP quality was qualified, with stable antibody titres over 6 months (P > 0.05). These findings highlight developing predictive tools to identify suitable CCP donors and emphasize the stability of CCP quality over time, suggesting its potential for long-term storage.

Dietary restriction-influenced biological performance is found in many animal species. Pardosa pseudoannulata is a dominant spider species in agricultural fields and is important for controlling pests. In this study, three groups – a control group (CK group), a re-feeding group (RF group), and a dietary restriction group (RT group) – were used to explore development, mating, reproduction, and the expression levels of Vg (vitellogenin) and VgR (vitellogenin receptor) genes in the spider. The findings indicated that when subjected to dietary restriction, the carapace size, weight of the spiderlings, and weight of the adults exhibited a decrease. Furthermore, the preoviposition period and egg stage were observed to be prolonged, while the number of spiderlings decreased. It was also observed that re-feeding reduced cannibalism rates and extended the preoviposition period. Dietary restriction also affected the expression of the Vg-3 gene in the spider. These results will contribute to the understanding of the impact of dietary restriction in predators of pest control, as well as provide a theoretical foundation for the artificial rearing and utilisation of the dominant spider in the field.

Understanding settling motion of coral grains is important in terms of protection of coral reef systems and resotoration of the associated ecosystems. In this paper, a series of laboratory experiments was conducted to investigate the settling motion, using optical microscopy to measure shape parameters of coral grains and the particle-filtering-based object tracking to reconstruct the three-dimensional trajectory. Three characteristic descent regimes, namely, tumbling, chaotic and fluttering, are classified based on the three-dimensional trajectory, the spiral radius variation and the velocity spectrum. It is demonstrated that if one randomly picks up one coral grain, then the probabilities of occurrence of the three regimes are approximately $26\,\%$, $42\,\%$ and $32\,\%$, respectively. We have shown that first, the dimensionless settling velocity generally increases with the non-dimensional diameter and Corey shape factor and second, the drag coefficient generally decreases with the Reynolds number and Corey shape factor. Based on this, the applicability of existing models on predicting settling velocity and drag coefficient for coral grains is demonstrated further. Finally, we have proposed extended models for predicting the settling velocity. This study contributes to better understanding of settling motion and improves our predictive capacity of settling velocity for coral grains with complex geometry.

Turbulent boundary layers (TBLs) over surface perturbations like bumps with roughness – notably altering heat and mass transfer, drag, etc. – are prevalent in nature (mountains, dunes, etc.) and technology. We study a channel flow with a transverse bump on one wall superimposed with small-scale longitudinal grooves via direct numerical simulation (DNS) of incompressible flow. Turbulence statistics and dynamics are compared between grooved wall (GW) and smooth wall (SW) bumps. Streamwise spinning jets emanating from the crests’ corners alter the flow structure within the separation bubble (SB), extending the SB length by 30 % over that for SW, and have lingering effects far downstream. Grooves decrease skin friction but increase the bump's form drag by 25 %. In GW, the peaks of turbulence intensity and production decrease by 20 % and shift downstream, compared with SW. Three regions of negative production, found upstream as well as downstream of the bump, are explained in terms of two separate mechanisms: normal and shear productions. Separation upstream of the bump occurs always for GW, but intermittently for SW. Within the downstream SB, counter-rotating minibubbles form intermittently for SW but always for GW. Interestingly, a minibubble causes streamwise vorticity reversal of the upstream moving secondary flow around each crest corner. The wall pressure in GW is invariant in the spanwise direction and is explained in terms of its non-local nature and its connection with outer structures. The grooved bump unearths rich TBL flow physics – upstream separation, dynamics of the downstream minibubble, altered reattachment dynamics and negative production.

Clogauite, ideally PbBi4Te4S3 is the new n = 1 member of the aleksite series, PbnBi4Te4Sn+2, where n is the homologue number. Clogauite is named from the type locality, the Clogau gold mine, Dolgellau Gold belt, Gwynedd, North Wales, United Kingdom. The mineral and name have been approved by the Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification of the International Mineralogical Association (IMA2023–062). The aleksite series is an accretional homologous series in which each member is derived from the same 5-atom tetradymite archetype. Clogauite crystallises in the trigonal crystal system (space group: P$\bar{3}$m1, #164). Three distinct polytypes of clogauite are recognised, corresponding to identical chemistry but different layer sequences, expressed as (57), (5559) and (557.559), respectively, in reference to the number of atoms in individual layer sequences. These are clogauite-12H, a = 4.277(4) Å, c = 23.46(14) Å, V = 371.598 Å3 and Z = 1; clogauite-24H, a = 4.278(4) Å, c = 46.88(31) Å, V = 743.053 Å3 and Z = 2; and clogauite-36H, a = 4.278(4) Å, c = 70.36(32) Å, V = 1115.283 Å3 and Z = 3. Clogauite is opaque, with a pale grey colour in reflected light. Reflectance is higher than tetradymite or galena. Bireflectance and anisotropy are strong. Structural data were determined from measurement of atomic-scale HAADF STEM imaging showing the internal arrangement of component atoms and characteristic selected area electron diffraction patterns for each polytype. The structures were then further constrained from ab initio total energy calculations and structure relaxation using density functional theory (DFT) using the measured parameters as input data. The relaxed crystal structure for each polytype was modelled to generate crystallographic information files (cif). STEM and electron diffraction simulations based on the crystallographic information data obtained from the DFT calculations show an excellent match to the empirical measurements.

This paper reports on an acoustic study of the retroflex lateral /ɭ/ and non-retroflex lateral /l/, as well as on the schwas following the two laterals in the Zibo dialect. Analyses of formants measured at the temporal midpoint of the lateral and schwa segments show that the retroflex lateral /ɭ/ has a significantly lower F1 as well as a significantly larger C/V duration ratio than the non-retroflex lateral. No significant difference is found in F2 or F3 of the two laterals. Moreover, the schwa following /ɭ/ has a significantly lower F1 than that following /l/, which could play a robust role of cue enhancement in distinguishing the preceding laterals, resulting in an overall enhancement of an otherwise auditorily vulnerable contrast in the laterals. Some inter-speaker variation is observed in the realization of /ɭ/, especially in F3, which may be indicative of a change in progress. These results provide insights into the phonemic status of the retroflex lateral in the Zibo dialect, which are further discussed in light of phonetic and phonological explanations.

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is a technique that directly injects a single sperm into the cytoplasm of mature oocytes. Here, we explored the safety of single-sperm cryopreservation applied in ICSI. This retrospective study enrolled 186 couples undergoing ICSI-assisted pregnancy. Subjects were allocated to the fresh sperm (group A)/single-sperm cryopreservation (group B) groups based on sperm type, with their clinical baseline/pathological data documented. We used ICSI-compliant sperm for subsequent in vitro fertilization and followed up on all subjects. The recovery rate/cryosurvival rate/sperm motility of both groups, the pregnancy/outcome of women receiving embryo transfer, and the delivery mode/neonatal-related information of women with successful deliveries were recorded. The clinical pregnancy rate, cumulative clinical pregnancy rate, abortion rate, ectopic pregnancy rate, premature delivery rate, live birth delivery rate, neonatal birth defect rate, and average birth weight were analyzed. The two groups showed no significant differences in age, body mass index, ovulation induction regimen, sex hormone [anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH)/follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)/luteinizing hormone (LH)] levels, or oocyte retrieval cycles. The sperm recovery rate (51.72%-100.00%) and resuscitation rate (62.09% ± 16.67%) in group B were higher; the sperm motility in the two groups demonstrated no significant difference and met the ICSI requirements. Group B exhibited an increased fertilization rate, decreased abortion rate, and increased safety versus group A. Compared with fresh sperm, the application of single-sperm cryopreservation in ICSI sensibly improved the fertilization rate and reduced the abortion rate, showing higher safety.

Obesity is an established risk factor for hypertension, but the mechanisms are only partially understood. We examined whether body mass index (BMI)-related DNA methylation (DNAm) variation would mediate the association of BMI with blood pressure (BP). We first conducted a genomewide DNA methylation analysis in monozygotic twin pairs to detect BMI-related DNAm variation and then evaluated the mediating effect of DNAm on the relationship between BMI and BP levels using the causal inference test (CIT) method and mediation analysis. Ontology enrichment analysis was performed for CpGs using the GREAT tool. A total of 60 twin pairs for BMI and systolic blood pressure (SBP) and 58 twin pairs for BMI and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) were included. BMI was positively associated with SBP (β = 1.86, p = .0004). The association between BMI and DNAm of 85 CpGs reached p < 1×10–4 level. Eleven BMI-related differentially methylated regions (DMRs) within LNCPRESS1, OGDHL, RNU1-44P, NPHS1, ECEL1P2, LLGL2, RNY4P15, MOGAT3, PHACTR3, and BAI2 were found. Of the 85 CpGs, 9 mapped to C10orf71-AS1, NDUFB5P1, KRT80, BAI2, ABCA2, PEX11G and FGF4 were significantly associated with SBP levels. Of the 9 CpGs, 2 within ABCA2 negatively mediated the association between BMI and SBP, with a mediating effect of −0.24 (95% CI [−0.65, −0.01]). BMI was also positively associated with DBP (β = 0.60, p = .0495). The association between BMI and DNAm of 193 CpGs reached p < 1×10−4 level. Twenty-five BMI-related DMRs within OGDHL, POU4F2, ECEL1P2, TTC6, SMPD4, EP400, TUBA1C and AGAP2 were found. Of the 193 CpGs, 33 mapped to ABCA2, ADORA2B, CTNNBIP1, KDM4B, NAA60, RSPH6A, SLC25A19 and STIL were significantly associated with DBP levels. Of the 33 CpGs, 12 within ABCA2, SLC25A19, KDM4B, PTPRN2, DNASE1, TFCP2L1, LMNB2 and C10orf71-AS1 negatively mediated the association between BMI and DBP, with a total mediation effect of −0.66 (95% CI [−1.07, −0.30]). Interestingly, BMI might also negatively mediate the association between the DNAm of most CpG mediators mentioned above and BP. The mediating effect of DNAm was also found when stratified by sex. In conclusion, DNAm variation may partially negatively mediate the association of BMI with BP. Our findings may provide new clues to further elucidate the pathogenesis of obesity to hypertension and identify new diagnostic biomarkers and therapeutic targets for hypertension.

Supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) processing has been proven as a method for preparing polymer/montmorillonite (MMT) nanocomposites with improved platelet dispersion. The influence of scCO2 processing on the shape and size of the MMT tactoid/platelet, which is of great importance to the final platelet dispersion in the polymer matrix, is scarcely reported in the literature. In the present study, the pristine MMT was first surface modified with 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (the grafted MMT is labeled as GMMT), and then intercalated using three kinds of intercalating agents, myristyltrimethyl-ammonium bromide (MTAB), tetradecyltrihexylphosphonium chloride (TDTHP), and ethoxyltriphenyl-phosphonium chloride (ETPC), in water or scCO2, to study the effect of intercalating agent type and intercalation method on the morphology and thermal properties of GMMT, as a part of a program devoted to the synthesis of polymer/MMT nanocomposites. The structure of intercalated GMMT was characterized by thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray powder diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The optimum intercalation conditions in scCO2 were established by trying a range of reaction times and pressures. The structures of intercalated GMMT obtained under optimum scCO2 conditions and water were compared. The basal spacing of GMMT intercalated in scCO2 was almost the same as that in water, and both were obviously larger than that of GMMT. The GMMT exhibited a compact spherical morphology (examined using SEM), and the surface structures (including surface morphology, surface roughness, and surface compactness) of samples intercalated in water became ‘less compact’ and the degree of the ‘compactness’ of samples intercalated in scCO2 decreased further. Whether in water or scCO2, samples intercalated with TDTHP exhibited a larger basal spacing and the extent of disorder increased compared to that for samples intercalated with MTAB. The pristine MMT was also intercalated for comparison and silane grafting was proven to contribute to the increased basal spacing and ‘less compact’ surface structure.

Fast neutron absorption spectroscopy is widely used in the study of nuclear structure and element analysis. However, due to the traditional neutron source pulse duration being of the order of nanoseconds, it is difficult to obtain a high-resolution absorption spectrum. Thus, we present a method of ultrahigh energy-resolution absorption spectroscopy via a high repetition rate, picosecond duration pulsed neutron source driven by a terawatt laser. The technology of single neutron count is used, which results in easily distinguishing the width of approximately 20 keV at 2 MeV and an asymmetric shape of the neutron absorption peak. The absorption spectroscopy based on a laser neutron source has one order of magnitude higher energy-resolution power than the state-of-the-art traditional neutron sources, which could be of benefit for precisely measuring nuclear structure data.

Helicity, an invariant under ideal-fluid (Euler) evolution, has a topological interpretation in terms of writhe and twist for a closed vortex tube, but accurately quantifying twist is challenging in viscous flows. With a novel helicity decomposition, we present a framework to construct the differential twist that establishes the theoretical relation between the total twisting number and the local twist rate of each vortex surface. This framework can characterize coiling vortex lines and internal structures within a vortex – important in laminar–turbulence transition, and in vortex instability, reconnection and breakdown. As a typical example, we explore the dynamics of vortex rings with differential twist via direct numerical simulation (DNS) of the Navier–Stokes equations. Two twist waves with opposite chiralities propagate towards each other along the ring and then collide whence the local twist rate rapidly surges. Local vortex surfaces are squeezed into a disk-like dipole structure containing coiled vortex lines, leading to vortex bursting. We derive a Burgers-equation-like model to quantify this process, which predicts a bursting time that agrees well with DNS.

The purpose of this study is to further investigate the relationship between sweetener exposure and the risk of endometrial cancer (EC). Up until December 2022, a literature search in an electronic database was carried out utilizing PubMed, Web of Science, Ovid, and Scopus. The odds ratio (OR) and 95 % confidence interval (CI) were used to evaluate the results. Sweeteners were divided into nutritional sweeteners (generally refers to sugar, such as sucrose and glucose) and non-nutritional sweeteners (generally refers to artificial sweeteners, such saccharin and aspartame). Ten cohort studies and two case-control studies were eventually included. The study found that in 12 studies, compared with the non-exposed group, the incidence rate of EC in the sweetener exposed group was higher (OR = 1·15, 95 % CI = [1·07, 1·24]). Subgroup analysis showed that in 11 studies, the incidence rate of EC in the nutritional sweetener exposed group was higher than that in the non-exposed group (OR = 1·25, 95 % CI = [1·14, 1·38]). In 4 studies, there was no difference in the incidence rate of EC between individuals exposed to non-nutritional sweeteners and those who were not exposed to non-nutritional sweeteners (OR = 0·90, 95 % CI = [0·81, 1·01]). This study reported that the consumption of nutritional sweeteners may increase the risk of EC, whereas there was no significant relationship between the exposure of non-nutritional sweeteners and the incidence of EC. Based on the results of this study, it is recommended to reduce the intake of nutritional sweeteners, but it is uncertain whether use of on-nutritional sweeteners instead of nutritional sweetener.

Compressible turbulent plane Couette flows are studied via direct numerical simulation for wall Reynolds numbers up to $Re_w=10\ 000$ and wall Mach numbers up to $M_w=5$. Various turbulence statistics are compared with their incompressible counterparts at comparable semilocal Reynolds numbers $Re^*_{\tau,c}$. The skin friction coefficient $C_f$, which decreases with $Re_w$, only weakly depends on $M_w$. On the other hand, the thermodynamic properties (mean temperature, density and others) strongly vary with $M_w$. Under proper scaling transformations, the mean velocity profiles for the compressible and incompressible cases collapse well and show a logarithmic region with the Kárman constant $\kappa =0.41$. Compared with wall units, the semilocal units yield a better collapse for the profiles of the Reynolds stresses. While the wall-normal and spanwise Reynolds stress components slightly decrease in the near-wall region, the inner peak of the streamwise component notably increases with increasing $M_w$ – indicating that flow becomes more anisotropic when compressible. In addition, the near-wall turbulence production decreases as $M_w$ increases – due to rapid wall-normal changes of viscosity caused by viscous heating. The streamwise and spanwise energy spectra show that the length scale of near-wall coherent structures does not vary with $M_w$ in semilocal units. Consistent with those in incompressible flows, the superstructures (the large-scale streamwise rollers) with a typical spanwise scale of $\lambda _z/h\approx 1.5{\rm \pi}$ become stronger with increasing $Re_w$. For the highest $Re_w$ studied, they contribute about $40\,\%$ of the Reynolds shear stress at the channel centre. Interestingly, flow visualization and correlation analysis show that the streamwise coherence of these structures degrades with increasing $M_w$. In addition, at comparable $Re^*_{\tau,c}$, the amplitude modulation of these structures on the near-wall small scales is quite similar between incompressible and compressible cases – but much stronger than that in plane Poiseuille flows.

Well-resolved direct numerical simulations (DNS) have been performed of the flow in a smooth circular pipe of radius $R$ and axial length $10{\rm \pi} R$ at friction Reynolds numbers up to $Re_\tau =5200$ using the pseudo-spectral code OPENPIPEFLOW. Various turbulence statistics are documented and compared with other DNS and experimental data in pipes as well as channels. Small but distinct differences between various datasets are identified. The friction factor $\lambda$ overshoots by $2\,\%$ and undershoots by $0.6\,\%$ the Prandtl friction law at low and high $Re$ ranges, respectively. In addition, $\lambda$ in our results is slightly higher than in Pirozzoli et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 926, 2021, A28), but matches well the experiments in Furuichi et al. (Phys. Fluids, vol. 27, issue 9, 2015, 095108). The log-law indicator function, which is nearly indistinguishable between pipe and channel up to $y^+=250$, has not yet developed a plateau farther away from the wall in the pipes even for the $Re_\tau =5200$ cases. The wall shear stress fluctuations and the inner peak of the axial turbulence intensity – which grow monotonically with $Re_\tau$ – are lower in the pipe than in the channel, but the difference decreases with increasing $Re_\tau$. While the wall value is slightly lower in the channel than in the pipe at the same $Re_\tau$, the inner peak of the pressure fluctuation shows negligible differences between them. The Reynolds number scaling of all these quantities agrees with both the logarithmic and defect-power laws if the coefficients are properly chosen. The one-dimensional spectrum of the axial velocity fluctuation exhibits a $k^{-1}$ dependence at an intermediate distance from the wall – also seen in the channel. In summary, these high-fidelity data enable us to provide better insights into the flow physics in the pipes as well as the similarity/difference among different types of wall turbulence.

Well-resolved direct numerical simulations of turbulent open channel flows (OCFs) are performed for friction Reynolds numbers up to $Re_\tau =2000$. Various turbulent statistics are documented and compared with the closed channel flows (CCFs). As expected, the mean velocity profiles of the OCFs match well with the CCFs in the near-wall region but diverge notably in the outer region. Interestingly, a logarithmic layer with Kárman constant $\kappa =0.363$ occurs for OCF at $Re_\tau =2000$, distinctly different from CCF. Except for a very thin layer near the free surface, most of the velocity and vorticity variances match between OCFs and CCFs. The one-dimensional energy spectra reveal that the very-large-scale motions (VLSMs) with streamwise wavelength $\lambda _x>3 h$ or spanwise wavelength $\lambda _z>0.5 h$ contribute the most to turbulence intensity and Reynolds shear stress in the overlap and outer layers (where h is the water depth). Furthermore, the VLSMs in OCFs are stronger than those in CCFs, resulting in a slightly higher streamwise velocity variance in the former. Due to the footprint effect, these structures also have significant contributions to the mean wall shear stress, and the difference between OCF and CCF enlarges with increasing $Re_\tau$. In summary, the free surface in OCFs plays an essential role in various flow phenomena, including the formation of stronger VLSMs and turbulent kinetic energy redistribution.
