The real-fluid effect induced by large density variation at supercritical pressure (SCP) modulates the turbulent dynamics and heat transfer, and poses challenges to existing turbulence models that are based on ideal-gas conditions. This study conducts direct numerical simulations of fully developed channel flows at SCP, with the upper and lower channel walls being isothermally heated and cooled, respectively. Emphasis is placed on examining the effects of various levels of density variations on near-wall turbulence as well as turbulent heat transfer by changing wall temperatures. The results show that the density fluctuation significantly impacts both first-order and second-order turbulence statistics near the heated wall owing to the close vicinity of pseudo-boiling point. Such real-fluid impact increases substantially with increasing density ratio, and tends to weaken the turbulent kinetic energy by damping turbulence production, while simultaneously inducing an additional turbulent mass flux that partially offsets this reduction. Detailed quadrant analysis reveals that the ‘ejection’ events dominate diverse effects of density fluctuation on Reynolds shear stresses, with density fluctuation contributing positively on the cooled wall side, and negatively on the heated wall side. Regarding the turbulent heat transfer, density fluctuation enhances the enthalpy–pressure–gradient correlation, tending to weaken the turbulent heat flux, which is slightly compensated by additional terms induced by density fluctuations. The overall negative contribution of density fluctuation to turbulent heat flux stems primarily from ‘hot ejection’ motions. Instantaneous flow characteristics provide additional support for these findings. Additionally, the mechanisms by which density fluctuations affect Reynolds shear stress and turbulent heat flux could also be extended to the skin friction coefficient and Nusselt number, respectively.

Galium aparine L. var. echinospermum (Wallr.) Cuf., an annual or winter annual broadleaf weed in the Rubiaceae family, has become troublesome due to its herbicide resistance in the wheat fields of the Huang-Huai-Hai region in China. Four cleavers populations (JS-15, SD-10, JS-22, and AH-20) were collected from the wheat fields of Jiangsu, Shandong, and Anhui Province, where florasulam control was absent. This study identified the herbicide resistance patterns and investigated the mechanism underlying the florasulam resistance. The whole-plant dose-response experiments revealed a notable variation in the degree of resistance exhibited by three specific populations towards florasulam, in comparison to the most sensitive populations (S and AH-9), with the highest resistance index reaching 841.4. Acetolactate Synthase gene-sequencing assay found that R plants from JS-15, JS-22, and AH-20 had a Trp-574-Leu mutation, while no known ALS resistance mutations were discovered in SD-10 plants. In vitro ALS enzyme activity assays also indicated that the extractable ALS from the resistant plants of JS-15, JS-22, and AH-20 was greatly resistant to florasulam relative to that of the susceptible. Additionally, according to the resistance rating system, all resistant populations were susceptible to Carfentrazone-ethyl + MCPA-Na and Bipyrazone + Fluroxypyr-methyl. AH-20, JS-15, and JS-22 exhibited resistance to selected ALS, 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase, and photosystem Ⅱ complex inhibitors, demonstrating RR and RRR resistance profiles, whereas AH-9 displayed S-sensitivity to virtually all tested agents. SD-10, on the other hand, showed RR and RRR resistance to HPPD and PSII inhibitors, but exhibited S-sensitivity specifically to tribenuron-methyl. These findings indicate that a target site-based mechanism drives the resistance to the ALS inhibitor florasulam in cleavers populations, but NTSR resistance may have also contributed (was not investigated). Other herbicides with different sites of action were tested and were active against cleavers.

Childhood maltreatment, a significant distal risk factor for individual development, is potentially linked to maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies (MCERS) and increased internalizing problems (i.e., depression and anxiety). Prior research has widely identified that MCERS mediate the link between childhood maltreatment and internalizing problems. However, this result overlooks the potential bidirectional relationship between MCERS and internalizing problems. In this study, we aim to explore whether childhood maltreatment longitudinally linked to internalizing problems through the mediating role of MCERS, or, conversely, was related to subsequent MCERS through internalizing problems. Gender differences in the associations between these variables were also examined. Participants were 892 adolescents from a longitudinal design with two waves (487 females, 405 males; Mage = 15.36, SDage = 1.43). Our results indicated that childhood maltreatment was longitudinally related to MCERS and internalizing problems. T1 MCERS mediated the relationship between T1 child maltreatment and T2 internalizing problems, while T1 internalizing problems also played a mediating role between T1 child maltreatment and T2 MCERS. These findings were also equivalent across genders. Taken together, childhood maltreatment was longitudinally associated with internalizing problems through MCERS, and also related to subsequent MCERS through internalizing problems.

The TRiC/CCT complex assists in the folding of approximately 10% of cytosolic proteins through an ATP-driven conformational cycle, playing a crucial role in maintaining protein homeostasis. Despite our understanding of ATP-driven TRiC ring closing and substrate folding, the process and mechanisms underlying TRiC ring-opening and substrate release remain largely unexplored. In this study, by determining an ensemble of cryo-EM structures of yeast TRiC in the presence of ADP, including three intermediate transition states, we present a comprehensive picture of the TRiC ring-opening process. During this process, CCT3 detects the loss of γ-phosphate and initiates with the dynamics of its apical protrusion, and expands to the outward leaning of the consecutive CCT6/8/7/5 subunits. This is followed by significant movements of CCT2, CCT4, and especially CCT1 subunits, resulting in the opening of the TRiC rings. We also observed an unforeseen temporary separation between the two rings in the CCT2 side, coordinating the release of the originally locked CCT4 N-terminus, which potentially participates in the ring-opening process. Collectively, our study reveals a stepwise TRiC ring-opening mechanism, provides a comprehensive view of the TRiC conformational landscape, and sheds lights on its subunit specificity in sensing nucleotide status and substrate release. Our findings deepen our understanding of protein folding assisted by TRiC and may inspire new strategies for the diagnosis and treatment of related diseases.

The effects of the evolution of vortices on the aeroacoustics generated by a hovering wing are numerically investigated by using a hybrid method of an immersed boundary–finite difference method for the three-dimensional incompressible flows and a simplified model based on the Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings acoustic analogy. A low-aspect-ratio ($AR=1.5$) rectangular wing at low Reynolds ($Re=1000$) and Mach ($M=0.04$) numbers is investigated. Based on the simplified model, the far-field acoustics is shown to be dominated by the time derivative of the pressure on the wing surface. Results show that vortical structure evolution in the flow fields, which is described by the divergence of the convection term of the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations in a body-fixed reference frame, determines the time derivative of the surface pressure and effectively the far-field acoustics. It dominates over the centrifugal acceleration and Coriolis acceleration terms in determining the time derivative of the surface pressure. The position of the vortex is also found to affect the time derivative of the surface pressure. A scaling analysis reveals that the vortex acoustic source is scaled with the cube of the flapping frequency.

Flow control of a low-aspect-ratio flat-plate heaving wing at an average angle of attack of $10^{\circ }$ by a steady-blowing jet is numerically studied by using a feedback immersed boundary–lattice Boltzmann method. Blowing jets at the leading edge, mid-chord and trailing edge are considered. The wing enjoys the highest lift production with the trailing-edge downstream blowing jet, which improves the average lift by 50.0 % at $Re = 1000$ and 22.9 % at $Re = 5000$ through the enhancement of the tip vortex circulation caused by the increase in the mass flux of the shear layer at the wing tips. This increase in mass flux decreases as $Re$ increases from 1000 to 5000 due to its self-limiting mechanism. A mid-chord vertical blowing jet induces a middle vortex which enhances the lift production but the enhancement is smaller than that of trailing-edge downstream blowing jet. Other jet arrangements do not significantly increase the lift coefficient, but the mid-chord upstream blowing jet experiences a significant reduction in the drag coefficient, leading to an increase of 50.6 % in the average lift-to-drag ratio. The effectiveness of the flow control is not significantly affected by the aspect ratio.

Three new species of Gyrodactylus were identified from the body surface of the Triplophysa species from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, Gyrodactylus triplorienchili n. sp. on Triplophysa orientalis in northern Tibet, G. yellochili n. sp. on T. sellaefer and T. scleroptera and G. triplsellachili n. sp. on T. sellaefer and T. robusta in Lanzhou Reach of the Yellow River. The three newly identified species share the nemachili group species’ characteristic of having inturning hamulus roots. Gyrodactylus triplorienchili n. sp. shared a quadrate sickle heel and a thin marginal hook sickle, two morphological traits that set them apart from G. yellochili n. sp. However, they may be identified by the distinct shapes of the sickle base and marginal hook sickle point. Gyrodactylus triplsellachili n. sp. had much larger opisthaptoral hard part size than the other two species. The three new species show relatively low interspecific differences of 2.9–5.3% p-distance for ITS1-5.85-ITS2 rDNA sequences. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that the three new species formed a well-supported monophyletic group (bp = 99) with the other nemachili group species.

The AIMTB rapid test assay is an emerging test, which adopted a fluorescence immunochromatographic assay to measure interferon-γ (IFN-γ) production following stimulation of effector memory T cells in whole blood by mycobacterial proteins. The aim of this article was to explore the ability of AIMTB rapid test assay in detecting Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) infection compared with the widely applied QuantiFERON-TB Gold Plus (QFT-Plus) test among rural doctors in China. In total, 511 participants were included in the survey. The concordance between the QFT-Plus test and the AIMTB rapid test assay was 94.47% with a Cohen’s kappa coefficient (κ) of 0.84 (95% CI, 0.79–0.90). Improved concordance between the two tests was observed in males and in participants with 26 or more years of service as rural doctors. The quantitative values of the QFT-Plus test was higher in individuals with a result of QFT-Plus-/AIMTB+ as compared to those with a result of QFT-Plus-/AIMTB- (p < 0.001). Overall, our study found that there was an excellent consistency between the AIMTB rapid test assay and the QFT-Plus test in a Chinese population. As the AIMTB rapid test assay is fast and easy to operate, it has the potential to improve latent tuberculosis infection testing and treatment at the community level in resource-limited settings.

Machine vision–based herbicide applications relying on object detection or image classification deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) demand high memory and computational resources, resulting in lengthy inference times. To tackle these challenges, this study assessed the effectiveness of three teacher models, each trained on datasets of varying sizes, including D-20k (comprising 10,000 true-positive and true-negative images) and D-10k (comprising 5,000 true-positive and true-negative images). Additionally, knowledge distillation was performed on their corresponding student models across a range of temperature settings. After the process of student–teacher learning, the parameters of all student models were reduced. ResNet18 not only achieved higher accuracy (ACC ≥ 0.989) but also maintained higher frames per second (FPS ≥ 742.9) under its optimal temperature condition (T = 1). Overall, the results suggest that employing knowledge distillation in the machine vision models enabled accurate and reliable weed detection in turf while reducing the need for extensive computational resources, thereby facilitating real-time weed detection and contributing to the development of smart, machine vision–based sprayers.

Evolutions of internal waves of different modes, particularly mode 1 and mode 2, passing over variable bathymetry are investigated based on a new numerical scheme. The problem is idealized as interfacial waves propagating on two interfaces of a three-layer density stratified fluid system with large-amplitude bottom topography. The Dirichlet-to-Neumann operators are introduced to reduce the spatial dimension by one and to adapt the three-layer system and significant topographic effects. However, for simplicity, nonlinear interactions between interfaces are neglected. Numerical techniques such as the Galerkin approximation, proven effective in previous works, are applied to save computational costs. Shoaling of linear waves on an uneven bottom is first studied to validate the proposed formulation and the corresponding numerical scheme. Then, for two-dimensional numerical experiments, mode transition phenomena excited by locally confined bottom obstacles and quickly varying topographies, including the Bragg resonance, mode-2 excitation, wave homogenization, etc., are investigated. In three-dimensional simulations, internal wave refraction by a Luneberg lens is considered, and good agreement is found in comparison with the ray theory. Finally, in the limiting case, when the top layer can be negligible (for example, a gas layer of extremely small density), the problem is reduced to a two-and-a-half-layer fluid system, where an interface and a surface are unknown free boundaries. In this situation, the surface signature of an internal wave is simulated and verified by introducing the realistic bathymetry of the Strait of Gibraltar and qualitatively compared with the satellite image.

In this paper, an unmanned bicycle (UB) with a reaction wheel is designed, and a second-order mathematical model with uncertainty is established. In order to achieve excellent balancing performance of the UB system, an adaptive controller is designed, which is composed of nominal feedback control, compensating control using extreme learning machine observer and reaching control via integral terminal sliding mode (ITSM) and barrier function (BF)-based adaptive law. Owing to the features of BF-based ITSM (BFITSM), not only any uncertainty or disturbance upper bound is not needed any longer but also the finite-time convergence of the closed-loop system can be ensured with a predefined error bound. Moreover, the BF-based control gain can be adaptively adjusted according to the update of the lumped uncertainty such that the overestimation is removed. The stability analysis of the closed-loop system is given according to Lyapunov theory. Comparable experimental results on an actual UB are carried out to validate the superior balancing performance of the proposed controller.

In 2017, Brosseau & Vlahovska (Phys. Rev. Lett, vol. 119, no. 3, 2017, p. 034501) found that, in a strong electric field, a weakly conductive, low-viscosity droplet immersed in a highly conductive, high-viscosity medium formed a lens shape, and liquid rings continuously detached from its equatorial plane and subsequently broke up into satellite droplets. This fascinating multiphase electrohydrodynamic (EHD) phenomenon is known as droplet equatorial streaming. In this paper, based on the unified lattice Boltzmann method framework proposed by Luo et al. (Phil. Trans. R. Soc. A Math. Phys. Engng Sci, vol. 379, no. 2208, 2021, p. 20200397), a novel lattice Boltzmann (LB) model is constructed for multiphase EHD by coupling the Allen–Cahn type of multiphase LB model and two new LB equations to solve the Poisson equation of the electric field and the conservation equation of the surface charge. Using the proposed LB model, we successfully reproduced, for the first time, the complete process of droplet equatorial streaming, including the continuous ejection and breakup of liquid rings on the equatorial plane. In addition, it is found that, under conditions of high electric field strength or significant electrical conductivity contrast, droplets exhibit fingering equatorial streaming that was unknown before. A power-law relationship is discovered for droplet total charge evolution and a theoretical model is then proposed to describe the droplet radius and height over time. The breakup of liquid rings is found to be dominated by capillary instability, while the breakup of liquid fingers is governed by the end-pinching mechanism. Finally, a phase diagram is constructed for fingering equatorial streaming and ring equatorial streaming, and a criterion equation is established for the phase boundary.

The self-sustained interactions between a flexible film and periodic vortices epitomize the spirit of fish swimming and flag flapping in nature, involving intricate patterns of flow–structure coupling. Here, we comprehensively investigate the multiple coupling states of a film in the cylinder wake mainly with experiments, complemented by theoretical solutions and nonlinear dynamical analyses. Four regimes of film motion states are identified in the parameter space spanned by the reduced velocity and the length ratio. These regimes are (i) keeping stationary, (ii) deflection flutter, (iii) hybrid flutter and (iv) periodic large-amplitude flapping, each governed by a distinct coupling mechanism, involving regular and irregular Kármán vortices, local instability of the elongated shear layers and 2P mode vortex shedding. The film futtering in regimes (ii) and (iii) is substantiated to be chaotic and bears a resemblance to the ‘entraining state’ of fish behind an obstacle in the river. The periodic flapping in regime (iv) manifests itself in an amalgam of standing and travelling waves, and has intrinsic relations to the ‘Kármán gaiting’ of fish in periodic vortices. With the spatiotemporal reconstruction for the periodic flapping, we procure the energy distributions on the film, revealing the energy transfer processes between the film and the large-scale vortices. The findings unequivocally indicate that the flow–structure interaction during the energy-release stage of the film is more intense than that during the energy-extraction stage. Given the similarities, the mathematical and physical methods presented in this work are also applicable to the research on biological undulatory locomotion.

This study presents a dual-channel vortex generator (VG) that leverages the snap-through behaviour of flexible sheets. The VG outperforms a similar-sized rigid VG in generating vortices within dual-channel flows while minimizing pressure loss. Numerical simulations using the immersed boundary-lattice Boltzmann method analyse the dynamics and vortex generation performance of the sheet under various system parameters. Two distinct modes are identified for the elastic sheet: a sustained snap-through mode (SSTM) and a dormant mode (DM). The sheet's mode is predominantly influenced by its length ratio (L*), bending stiffness $(K_b^\ast )$ and flow strength, with the mass ratio having a minimal impact. The sheet exhibiting regular SSTM can effectively generate vortices in both channels and the vortex generation performance can be conveniently tuned by altering the sheet's initial buckling (i.e. L*). An increase in $K_b^\ast $ results in a higher critical Reynolds number (Rec) required for mode transition. An increase in L*, however, initially raises Rec and then lowers it, suggesting an optimal length ratio (approximately 0.7 for our considered system) for minimizing the Rec necessary to trigger SSTM. Furthermore, a disparity in the flow strength between channels is found to suppress the snap-through of the sheet; a greater disparity, however, is permissible to induce the SSTM of more compliant sheets. These findings underscore the potential of snap-through behaviour for enhanced flow manipulation in dual-channel systems.

The sophisticated relationship between the intake of dietary carbohydrates and host immunity is mediated in large part by the gut microbiota. This comprehensive review explores the multifaceted connections linking human gut microbiota with nondigestible carbohydrate metabolism and immune responses, highlighting the critical importance of this symbiotic relationship in maintaining overall host health. Understanding the mechanisms by which gut microbiota act as a bridge between carbohydrate intake and host immunity has significant implications for precision nutrition strategies and the development of therapeutic interventions.
