Hypereutrophic Grand Lake St Marys (GLSM) is a large (52 km2), shallow (mean depth ~ 1.5 m) reservoir in an agricultural watershed of western Ohio (USA). GLSM suffers from extensive cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (cHABs) that persist much of the year, resulting in total microcystin concentrations that are often above safe contact levels. Over two summers (2020 and 2021), two phosphorus (P) binding agents (alum and lanthanum/bentonite clay Phoslock, respectively), in conjunction with a P-binding algaecide (SeClear) in 2021, were applied to a 3.24-ha enclosure to mitigate cHAB activity and create a ‘safe’ recreational space for the public. We evaluated these applications by comparing total phosphorus (TP), total microcystin, total chlorophyll, and phycocyanin concentrations within the enclosure and the adjacent lake. Some evidence for short-term reductions in TP, microcystin, chlorophyll, and phycocyanin concentrations were observed following each P binding treatment, but all parameters rapidly returned to or exceeded pre-application levels within 2–3 weeks after treatment. These results suggest that in-lake chemical treatments to mitigate cHABs are unlikely to provide long-lasting benefits in these semi-enclosed areas of large, shallow, hypereutrophic systems, and resources may be better applied toward reducing external nutrient loads (P and nitrogen) from the watershed.

Psychosocial rehabilitation and psychosocial disability research have been a longstanding topic in healthcare, demanding continuous exploration and analysis to enhance patient and clinical outcomes. As the prevalence of psychosocial disability research continues to attract scholarly attention, many scientific articles are being published in the literature. These publications offer profound insights into diagnostics, preventative measures, treatment strategies, and epidemiological factors. Computational text mining as a subfield of artificial intelligence (AI) can make a big difference in accurately analyzing the current extensive collection of scientific articles on time, assisting individual scientists in understanding psychosocial disabilities better, and improving how we care for people with these challenges. Leveraging the vast repository of scientific literature available on PubMed, this study employs advanced text mining strategies, including word embeddings and large language models (LLMs) to extract valuable insights, automatically catalyzing research in mental health. It aims to significantly enhance the scientific community’s knowledge by creating an extensive textual dataset and advanced computational text mining strategies to explore current trends in psychosocial rehabilitation and psychosocial disability research.

The effects of the evolution of vortices on the aeroacoustics generated by a hovering wing are numerically investigated by using a hybrid method of an immersed boundary–finite difference method for the three-dimensional incompressible flows and a simplified model based on the Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings acoustic analogy. A low-aspect-ratio ($AR=1.5$) rectangular wing at low Reynolds ($Re=1000$) and Mach ($M=0.04$) numbers is investigated. Based on the simplified model, the far-field acoustics is shown to be dominated by the time derivative of the pressure on the wing surface. Results show that vortical structure evolution in the flow fields, which is described by the divergence of the convection term of the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations in a body-fixed reference frame, determines the time derivative of the surface pressure and effectively the far-field acoustics. It dominates over the centrifugal acceleration and Coriolis acceleration terms in determining the time derivative of the surface pressure. The position of the vortex is also found to affect the time derivative of the surface pressure. A scaling analysis reveals that the vortex acoustic source is scaled with the cube of the flapping frequency.

Flow control of a low-aspect-ratio flat-plate heaving wing at an average angle of attack of $10^{\circ }$ by a steady-blowing jet is numerically studied by using a feedback immersed boundary–lattice Boltzmann method. Blowing jets at the leading edge, mid-chord and trailing edge are considered. The wing enjoys the highest lift production with the trailing-edge downstream blowing jet, which improves the average lift by 50.0 % at $Re = 1000$ and 22.9 % at $Re = 5000$ through the enhancement of the tip vortex circulation caused by the increase in the mass flux of the shear layer at the wing tips. This increase in mass flux decreases as $Re$ increases from 1000 to 5000 due to its self-limiting mechanism. A mid-chord vertical blowing jet induces a middle vortex which enhances the lift production but the enhancement is smaller than that of trailing-edge downstream blowing jet. Other jet arrangements do not significantly increase the lift coefficient, but the mid-chord upstream blowing jet experiences a significant reduction in the drag coefficient, leading to an increase of 50.6 % in the average lift-to-drag ratio. The effectiveness of the flow control is not significantly affected by the aspect ratio.

In this retrospective cohort study of military trainees, symptomatic-only coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) arrival antigen testing decreased isolation requirements without increasing secondary cases compared to universal antigen testing. Symptomatic-only arrival antigen testing is a feasible alternative for individuals entering a congregant setting with a high risk of COVID-19 transmission.

Cereal rye (Secale cereale L.) cover crop and preemergence herbicides are important components of an integrated weed management program for waterhemp [Amaranthus tuberculatus (Moq.) Sauer] and Palmer amaranth (Amaranthus palmeri S. Watson) management in soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.]. Accumulating adequate cereal rye biomass for effective suppression of Amaranthus spp. can be challenging in the upper Midwest due to the short window for cereal rye growth in a corn–soybean rotation. Farmers are adopting the planting green system to optimize cereal rye biomass production and weed suppression. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of planting soybean green when integrated with preemergence herbicides for the control of Amaranthus spp. under two soybean planting time frames. The study was conducted across 19 site-years in the United States over the 2021 and 2022 growing seasons. Factors included cover crop management practices (“no-till,” “cereal rye early-term,” and “cereal rye plant-green”), soybean planting times (“early” and “late”), and use of preemergence herbicides (“NO PRE” and “YES PRE”). Planting soybean green increased cereal rye biomass production by 33% compared with early termination. Greater cereal rye biomass production when planting green provided a 44% reduction in Amaranthus spp. density compared with no-till. The use of preemergence herbicides also resulted in a 68% reduction in Amaranthus spp. density compared with NO PRE. Greater cereal rye biomass produced when planting green reduced soybean stand, which directly reduced soybean yield in some site-years. Planting soybean green is a feasible management practice to optimize cereal rye biomass production, which, combined with preemergence herbicides, provided effective Amaranthus spp. management. Soybean stand was a key factor in maintaining soybean yields compared with no-till when planting green. Farmers should follow best management recommendations for proper planter and equipment setup to ensure effective soybean establishment under high levels of cereal rye biomass when planting green.

Jellyfishes have ecological and societal value, but our understanding of taxonomic identity of many jellyfish species remains limited. Here, an approach integrating morphological and molecular (16S ribosomal RNA and cytochrome oxidase I) data enables taxonomic assessment of the blubber jellyfish found in the Philippines. In this study, we aimed to resolve doubt on the taxonomy of Acromitoides purpurus, a valid binomen at the time of our research. Our morphological findings confirm that this jellyfish belongs to the genus Catostylus, and is distinct from known species of the genus inhabiting the Western Pacific, such as Catostylus ouwensi, Catostylus townsendi, and Catostylus mosaicus. Detailed morphological and molecular analyses of the type specimens from the Philippines with the other Catostylus species revive the binomen Catostylus purpurus and invalidate A. purpurus. Genetic analysis also distinguishes this Philippine jellyfish from C. townsendi and C. mosaicus. Through this study, we arranged several Catostylidae taxa into species inquirendae (Catostylus tripterus, Catostylus turgescens, and Acromitoides stiphropterus) and one genus inquirenda (Acromitoides) and provided an identification key for species of Catostylus. This comprehensive study confirms the blubber jellyfish as C. purpurus, enriching our understanding of jellyfish biodiversity. The integration of morphological and genetic analyses proves vital in resolving taxonomic ambiguities within the Catostylidae family and in the accurate identification of scyphozoan jellyfishes.

This interdisciplinary study contributes to the understanding of the use of raw materials and pottery production techniques in Late Punic–Late Republican Malta, focusing on the Tas-Silġ sanctuary and the Żejtun Villa. Plates, bowls and cooking vessels were described typologically, and their fabrics were characterised using polarised light microscopy and Energy Dispersive X-Ray Fluorescence. The aims were to classify these vessels into integrated and coherent fabric groups based on all analyses, to better understand the local production of vessels and to assess a possible local provenance.

Four integrated fabric groups were identified and represent local productions using distinct raw materials or production techniques. These groups can be distinguished typologically, macroscopically, petrographically and chemically. Multivariate techniques, including the chemical analysis of Maltese clays, were produced to enhance the fabric classification and discuss their raw materials. The raw materials identified are consistent with what is known in Maltese geology. One group is distinctive, and the results suggest the possible use of a previously unidentified raw material, Terra Rossa, found over the Upper Coralline Limestone. This new classification provides the basis for further studies of Late Punic–Roman sites in the Maltese islands and the future identification of imports and exports from the Maltese islands.

Background: Multiplex molecular tests for infectious diseases can provide highly sensitive results rapidly; however, these tests may more readily detect asymptomatic colonization. There are reports of non-FDA approved laboratory-developed multiplex tests for the diagnosis of urinary tract infections (UTI). Differentiating UTI from asymptomatic bacteriuria is challenging, especially in older adults. The increased sensitivity of multiplex tests may exacerbate this challenge. We sought to describe the use of multiplex testing for UTIs in Medicare claims. Methods: Multiplex testing was identified using carrier claims submitted by non-institutional providers using the Chronic Conditions Warehouse for 2016 – 2022. Because there are no CPT-4 codes specifying UTI multiplex testing, we included claims as described in Figure 1 and categorized claims based on the primary ICD-10-CM diagnosis. The payment amounts for line items related to testing for infectious agents were summed. Laboratories were counted using CLIA numbers listed on corresponding claims. Beneficiaries residing in a nursing home at the time of their claim were identified using stay information derived from the Minimum Dataset 3.0. For comparison, similar characteristics among carrier claims with a CPT-4 code indicating urine culture were also described. Results: Claims for unspecified multiplex molecular tests overall have increased, driven by increases in claims with a primary UTI diagnosis (from 8,521 in 2016 to 386,943 in 2022), while urine cultures have not (Figure 1). In 2022, 65% of all unspecified multiplex tests were linked to a diagnosis of UTI; UTI multiplex claims were associated with 647 laboratories. For UTI claims, the median cost per claim for line items related to multiplex testing was $589 compared to $13 for urine culture-related line items. Overall, 8% of UTI multiplex claims were for beneficiaries residing in a nursing home. Conclusions: Claims for non-FDA approved unspecified multiplex tests associated with a primary diagnosis of UTI have increased >45-times between 2016-2021 and have >45-times higher median costs than urine cultures. The use of this testing in the Medicare population, including nursing home residents, is of potential concern given that inappropriate treatment of asymptomatic bacteriuria has been described to be common in older adults. Research is needed to outline use cases where UTI multiplex testing may be beneficial. Appropriate use of diagnostic testing is important to minimize diagnostic errors and avoid unnecessary antibiotic use.

We analyzed invasive group A streptococcal puerperal sepsis cases in a large health zone in Alberta, Canada between 2013 and 2022. Of the 21 cases, 85.7% were adjudicated as hospital/delivery-acquired, with 2 clusters having identical isolates found through whole genome sequencing. We implemented policy interventions across Alberta aimed at preventing future infections.

History records innumerable assaults by the barbarian nomads of the steppes and deserts on the realms of civilization. In some cases, the invaders overturned an organized state, as the Hyksos did Egypt, the Ephthalites northern India, and the Kin northern China. In others, they were thrown back, as the Huns were from the Roman Empire and the Avars from Byzantium and Frankland. Some shed their barbarism and acquired the arts of civilization, like the Magyars and the Ottoman Turks, others remained illiterate pastoralists to the end, like the Scythians and the Cumans. Two created world empires as a result of conquests the scope and magnitude of which still grip the imagination. These were the Arabs of the seventh century and the Mongols of the thirteenth, whose spectacular achievements pose problems concerning the interrelationship of nomadic and sedentary societies and of the nature of the “drives” which impel pastoral peoples to burst out of their homelands not simply to raid and plunder but to establish political domination over their civilized neighbors. The Arab and Mongol conquests also raise the question why the former cleared the ground for the erection of a distinctive new world culture and the latter did not.
