Unauthorized cultural resource alterations range from looting and grave robbing to contract violations and wildland fires. Such alterations degrade cultural resources’ spiritual, communal, ecological, economic, and scientific values. Alterations often violate communal senses of place, security, and belonging. Alterations complicate jurisdiction-specific management, which is premised on up-to-date information on resource sizes, conditions, and significance. Cultural resource damage assessment protocols based on proven forensic practices distil to eight fieldwork steps: verify the alteration, assemble the team, survey the scene, document the evidence, gather the evidence, assess the archaeological value and the cost of repair and restoration, prescribe emergency remediation, and confirm evidence documentation and custody. The eight steps give special consideration to local communities and Indigenous Territories, where unauthorized alterations are as common as they are elsewhere, whereas impacts to spiritual and cultural values are generally greater. Adapted to jurisdiction- and incident-specific circumstances, the steps will guide responses to alterations by community leaders, land managers, regulators, law enforcement agents, and archaeologists, including preparation of excellent damage assessment reports. Damage assessment practitioners and land managers should refine these practices to deter alterations, engage Tribes and other affected communities, halt postalteration degradation, ensure accountability, and enable jurisdiction-scale curation of cultural resources and their unique value constellations.

A 2018 workshop on the White Mountain Apache Tribe lands in Arizona examined ways to enhance investigations into cultural property crime (CPC) through applications of rapidly evolving methods from archaeological science. CPC (also looting, graverobbing) refers to unauthorized damage, removal, or trafficking in materials possessing blends of communal, aesthetic, and scientific values. The Fort Apache workshop integrated four generally partitioned domains of CPC expertise: (1) theories of perpetrators’ motivations and methods; (2) recommended practice in sustaining public and community opposition to CPC; (3) tactics and strategies for documenting, investigating, and prosecuting CPC; and (4) forensic sedimentology—uses of biophysical sciences to link sediments from implicated persons and objects to crime scenes. Forensic sedimentology served as the touchstone for dialogues among experts in criminology, archaeological sciences, law enforcement, and heritage stewardship. Field visits to CPC crime scenes and workshop deliberations identified pathways toward integrating CPC theory and practice with forensic sedimentology’s potent battery of analytic methods.

The crystal structure of tlapallite has been determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction and supported by electron probe micro-analysis, powder diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. Tlapallite is trigonal, space group P321, with a = 9.1219(17) Å, c = 11.9320(9) Å and V = 859.8(3) Å3, and was refined to R1 = 0.0296 for 786 reflections with I > 2σ(I). This study resulted from the discovery of well-crystallised tlapallite at the Wildcat prospect, Utah, USA. The chemical formula of tlapallite has been revised to (Ca,Pb)3CaCu6[Te4+3Te6+O12]2(Te4+O3)2(SO4)2·3H2O, or more simply (Ca,Pb)3CaCu6Te4+8Te6+2O30(SO4)2·3H2O, from H6(Ca,Pb)2(Cu,Zn)3(TeO3)4(TeO6)(SO4). The tlapallite structure consists of layers containing distorted Cu2+O6 octahedra, Te6+O6 octahedra and Te4+O4 disphenoids (which together form the new mixed-valence phyllotellurate anion [Te4+3Te6+O12]12−), Te4+O3 trigonal pyramids and CaO8 polyhedra. SO4 tetrahedra, Ca(H2O)3O6 polyhedra and H2O groups fill the space between the layers. Tlapallite is only the second naturally occurring compound containing tellurium in both the 4+ and 6+ oxidation states with a known crystal structure, the other being carlfriesite, CaTe4+2Te6+O8. Carlfriesite is the predominant secondary tellurium mineral at the Wildcat prospect. We also present an updated structure for carlfriesite, which has been refined to R1 = 0.0230 for 874 reflections with I > 2σ(I). This updated structural refinement improves upon the one reported previously by refining all atoms anisotropically and presenting models of bond valence and Te4+ secondary bonding.

Millsite, CuTeO3·2H2O, is a new mineral from Gråurdfjellet in Oppdal, Norway. It occurs as a minor secondary phase alongside teineite, other copper secondaries and relict primary tellurides in a boulder of quartz-rich granite, which is probably a glacial erratic. Millsite is bright cyan to royal blue in colour. The mineral is transparent to slightly translucent with a vitreous lustre and has a perfect (100) cleavage. It is brittle, has a conchoidal fracture and a pale green streak. Millsite is optically biaxial (+), α = 1.756(5), β = 1.794(5), γ = 1.925calc and 2Vmeas = 60(1)°. Millsite has monoclinic space group P21/c, with a = 7.4049(2) Å, b = 7.7873(2) Å, c = 8.5217(2) Å, β = 110.203(3)°, V = 461.17(2) Å3 and Z = 4. The empirical formula is Cu0.99(Te0.98Se0.02)O3(H2O)2. The five strongest reflections in the powder X-ray diffraction pattern are [dhkl in Å (hkl, Irel%)]: 6.954 (100, 100), 3.558 (012, 64), 2.838 (12$\bar 2$, 47), 2.675 (211, 43) and 3.175 (210, 39). The crystal structure has been determined to R1 = 0.016, wR2 = 0.036 and GooF = 1.049. The diagnostic structural unit of millsite consists of a Cu2O6(H2O)4 dimer that is decorated with four TeO3 groups connecting adjacent dimers and defining (100) heteropolyhedral sheets. These heteropolyhedral sheets are only connected by layers of structurally significant hydrogen bonds and correlate with the (100) cleavage. Millsite is a polymorph of teineite with a unique configuration of the M2O6(H2O)4 dimer that leads to a sheet topology. No isostructural selenium or tellurium analogue exists. The monoclinic polymorph (P21/c) of chalcomenite ‘monoclinic-CuSeO3·2H2O’ hereafter, ahlfeldite and MgSeO3·2H2O have M2O6(H2O)4 dimers, but their configuration differs significantly from that of millsite and leads to a framework topology rather than a sheet. Teineite does not have a dimeric structure and so is fundamentally different from millsite. The sheet topology of millsite appears to be unique among tellurites.

The fly-round has for long been regarded as the most satisfactory way of following fluctuations in populations of tsetse flies (Glossina) and locating areas of concentration. It consists of a path cut through bush so as to traverse the principal vegetation communities and is divided into sections, corresponding to the latter, on each of which the flies are caught. A modification now widely used but not previously described in detail is termed a line transect or transect fly-round; this follows an arbitrary course along straight lines that may be orientated with regard to the topography and is divided into numerous short sections of equal length terminating at posts at which flies are caught. In its simplest form it follows a straight course, but various patterns are used including an angular spiral. It facilitates the collection of quantitative data on tsetse density and the factors (such as vegetation) that affect it, and their analysis is possible in more detail than was the case when the fly-round was laid out according to a pre conceived notion of vegetational relationships. This is illustrated by data from a fly-round at Shinyanga, Tanganyika, consisting of six sides, each of 2,000 yd., of two diagonally adjoining squares, that was divided originally into nine sections of varying lengths representing the floristic communities traversed, and subse quently into 120 sections each 200 yd. long. Comparison of the catches of non-teneral males of G. swynnertoni Aust. grouped according to the two methods emphasises the much greater detail provided by the second of them. The transect fly-round is easy to lay out and operate and is thought likely to be particularly useful in connection with reclamation work.
The effect of varying the section length was investigated for G. swynnertoni at Shinyanga, G. pallidipes Aust. in Nyanza Province, Kenya, and G. austeni Newst. in Zanzibar. With the first, progressively fewer flies of all categories except teneral males were caught as the section length was increased progressively from 50 to 200 yd.; with the other species a similar tendency was apparent, but not significant. The results emphasise a point long recognised but often neglected, that data from fly-rounds reflect, in part, the reaction of tsetse populations to the behaviour of the catching party. That this reaction, termed the availability, is itself inconstant is shown by catches of G. pallidipes on a fly-round done daily for a month, in which differences between catches on consecutive days, sometimes exceeding 3:1, must represent changes in availability, not in absolute population.
Data from the transect fly-round can be analysed so as to indicate sections where the catches deviate significantly from those expected on the assumption that they are distributed according to a Poisson series, and where there may thus be presumed to be areas of concentration of the population, or the reverse. A Table is provided to facilitate such analysis.

A field experiment was established to examine the effect of nutrient addition on the growth and competitive abilities of Parmelia caperata, P. saxatilis and Xanthoria parietina. Thallus fragments were attached to roofing slates in a split-plot experimental design in monospecific and multispecific mixtures and sprayed with nutrient solution at application frequencies representing a range of nutrient enrichments. Growth rates were measured as change in thallus diameter and the strength of competition determined by counting the number of thallus overlaps. Nutrient application significantly affected thallus growth with medium application rates promoting more thallus growth than controls (distilled water) or higher application rates in all three species. Nutrient addition at medium applications significantly increased the number of thallus overlaps made by all three species compared with controls, suggesting that competition became more intense. Although symmetrical competition was observed between all three species it was noted that growth and competition of thalli in two-species mixtures could not be used to predict the result in three-species mixtures. These results suggest that elevated nutrient levels can affect lichen growth rates and competition between thalli, leading to alterations in lichen community structure.
