Boundary layers are present in many natural and industrial fluid flows. The concept of boundary layers can be traced back to Leonardo da Vinci's paintings of pipe flow, where he was aware of a higher velocity away from the walls. During the 19th century, the physics of boundary conditions had been extensively debated, and the well-known Maxwell–Navier slip length was proposed in 1823. In most cases, the no-slip boundary condition is valid at a fluid–solid interface. However, with the advancement of measurement techniques, slip lengths ranging from nanometre to micrometre scales were experimentally measured, raising questions regarding the applicability of the no-slip condition. In 2003, Lauga & Stone (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 489, 2003, pp. 55–77) proposed a simple model to elucidate the effect of surface heterogeneities on the slip length, elegantly bridging the microscopic structure of the wall-boundary conditions to the macroscopic effective slip length.

We report on an experimental study of turbulent Rayleigh–Bénard convection with asymmetric top and bottom plates. The plates are covered with pyramid-shaped roughness elements whose aspect ratios are $\lambda =1$ or $\lambda =4$. In the low-Rayleigh-number regime ($Ra<1.9\times 10^9$), the heat transport efficiencies in the asymmetric cells, characterized by the Nusselt number, are smaller than those measured in a symmetric $\lambda = 1$ cell and are greater than those for a symmetric $\lambda = 4$ cell, whereas in the high-Rayleigh-number regime ($Ra>1.9\times 10^9$), the Nusselt numbers of the asymmetric cells are, in turn, greater than those for the symmetric cell with $\lambda = 1$ and smaller than those for the symmetric cell with $\lambda = 4$. In addition, the heat transports of individual plates are studied based on the temperature drops across both halves of the cell. In the low-$Ra$ regime, the $\lambda =1$ plate shows higher heat transfer than the $\lambda =4$ plate, while for the high-$Ra$ regime, the $\lambda =4$ plate shows a higher heat transport ability. In both regimes, the individual Nusselt number of the plate with lower heat transfer is insensitive to the topology of the other plate. Besides, it is found that the symmetry of the centre temperature distribution is robust to the symmetry breaking of boundary topographies. For the $Ra$ range explored, a weak temperature inversion is observed in the bulk of asymmetric rough cells. Finally, we remark that the temperature fluctuation at the cell centre and the Reynolds number associated with the large-scale circulation show universal power laws in terms of the flux Rayleigh number as $\sigma _{T_{c}}\sim Ra_F^{0.68}$ and $Re_{LSC}\sim Ra_F^{0.36}$, respectively.

An experimental investigation is conducted to study the flow patterns, spectral properties and energy fluxes in thin-layer turbulence with varying system sizes and damping rates. It is found that although a system-size vortex (an indicator of spectral condensation) occurs for small system sizes and does not for large ones, the spectra for different system sizes consistently exhibit a scaling close to $k^{-3}$ in inverse cascade (another indicator of spectral condensation). On the other hand, under a fixed system size larger than the friction-dominated length scale, the energy spectrum in the inverse cascade range changes from $k^{-3}$ to $k^{-5/3}$ as the damping rate increases, suggesting that the friction-dominated length scale may not be a suitable parameter for predicting spectral transition. At lower damping rates and large system sizes, turbulent structures grow larger via inverse cascade, manifesting as long streamers, and the small-scale vortices are suppressed. This suppression leads to a reduction of energy flux at intermediate scales and a change in the spectral shape. The dimensionless Taylor microscale is found to exhibit a monotonic dependence on the damping rate. With the reduction in the damping rate, the Taylor microscale increases to become comparable with the forcing scale, and the spectrum in inverse cascade transits to a steeper scaling, $k^{-3}$, indicating that the dimensionless Taylor microscale may be used as a diagnostic parameter for spectral transition.

We present a systematic study on the effects of small aspect ratios $\varGamma$ on heat transport in liquid metal convection with a Prandtl number of $Pr=0.029$. The study covers $1/20\le \varGamma \le 1$ experimentally and $1/50\le \varGamma \le 1$ numerically, and a Rayleigh number $Ra$ range of $4\times 10^3 \le Ra \le 7\times 10^{9}$. It is found experimentally that the local effective heat transport scaling exponent $\gamma$ changes with both $Ra$ and $\varGamma$, attaining a $\varGamma$-dependent maximum value before transition-to-turbulence and approaches $\gamma =0.25$ in the turbulence state as $Ra$ increases. Just above the onset of convection, Shishkina (Phys. Rev. Fluids, vol 6, 2021, 090502) derived a length scale $\ell =H/(1+1.49\varGamma ^{-2})^{1/3}$. Our numerical study shows $Ra_{\ell }$, i.e. $Ra$ based on $\ell$, serves as a proper control parameter for heat transport above the onset with $Nu-1=0.018(1+0.34/\varGamma ^2)(Ra/Ra_{c,\varGamma }-1)$. Here $Ra_{c,\varGamma }$ represents the $\varGamma$-dependent critical $Ra$ for the onset of convection and $Nu$ is the Nusselt number. In the turbulent state, for a general scaling law of $Nu-1\sim Ra^\alpha$, we propose a length scale $\ell = H/(1+1.49\varGamma ^{-2})^{1/[3(1-\alpha )]}$. In the case of turbulent liquid metal convection with $\alpha =1/4$, our measurement shows that the heat transport will become weakly dependent on $\varGamma$ with $Ra_{\ell }\equiv Ra/(1+1.49\varGamma ^{-2})^{4/3} \ge 7\times 10^5$. Finally, once the flow becomes time-dependent, the growth rate of $Nu$ with $Ra$ declines compared with the linear growth rate in the convection state. A hysteresis is observed in a $\varGamma =1/3$ cell when the flow becomes time-dependent. Measurements of the large-scale circulation suggest the hysteresis is caused by the system switching from a single-roll-mode to a double-roll-mode in an oscillation state.

We report a home-built velocity-gradient-tensor-resolved particle image velocimetry (VGTR-PIV) system which spatio-temporally resolves all components of the velocity gradient tensor. This technique is applied to the paradigmatic turbulent Rayleigh–Bénard convection system in a cylindrical cell at three representative positions, i.e. centre, side and bottom regions. The VGTR-PIV system allows us to directly measure, for the first time, the spatio-temporally resolved energy dissipation rate and enstrophy in turbulent thermal convection. In the experiment, the Rayleigh number $Ra$ varied in the range $2 \times 10^8 \leqslant Ra \leqslant 8 \times 10^9$ and the Prandtl number $Pr$ was fixed at $Pr = 4.34$. Compared with the fully resolved energy dissipation rate $\varepsilon$, the pseudo-dissipation provides the best estimate within $3\,\%$, the planar (two-dimensional) surrogate has a larger relative error and the one-dimensional surrogate leads to the largest error. The power-law scalings of the time-averaged energy dissipation rate with the Rayleigh number follow $\langle \varepsilon _c \rangle _t / (\nu ^3 H^{-4}) = 9.86 \times 10^{-6} Ra^{1.54 \pm 0.02}$, $\langle \varepsilon _s \rangle _t / (\nu ^3 H^{-4}) = 9.26 \times 10^{-3} Ra^{1.25 \pm 0.02}$ and $\langle \varepsilon _b \rangle _t / (\nu ^3 H^{-4}) = 2.70 \times 10^{-2} Ra^{1.23 \pm 0.02}$ in the centre, side and bottom regions, respectively where $\nu$ is dynamic viscosity and $H$ is cell height. These scaling relations, along with our earlier measured time-averaged energy dissipation rate at the bottom wall surface $\langle \varepsilon _w \rangle _t / (\nu ^3 H^{-4}) = 9.65 \times 10^{-2} Ra^{1.25 \pm 0.02}$ (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 947, 2022, A15), provide important constraints against which theoretical models may be tested. For the centre and side locations in the convection cell, the probability density functions (p.d.f.s) of the energy dissipation rate and enstrophy both follow a stretched exponential distribution. For the bottom region, the p.d.f.s of dissipation and enstrophy exhibit a stretched exponential distribution outside the viscous boundary layer and an exponential distribution inside the viscous boundary layer. It is also found that extreme events with high dissipation are the most intermittent in the side region, whereas the bottom region is less intermittent than the cell centre.

Using thermal convection in liquid metal, we show that strong spatial confinement not only delays the onset Rayleigh number $Ra_c$ of Rayleigh–Bénard instability but also postpones the various flow-state transitions. The $Ra_c$ and the transition to fully developed turbulence Rayleigh number $Ra_f$ depend on the aspect ratio $\varGamma$ with $Ra_c\sim \varGamma ^{-4.05}$ and $Ra_f\sim \varGamma ^{-3.01}$, implying that the stabilization effects caused by the strong spatial confinement are weaker on the transition to fully developed turbulence when compared with that on the onset. When the flow state is characterized by the supercritical Rayleigh number $Ra/Ra_{c}$ ($Ra$ is the Rayleigh number), our study shows that the transition to fully developed turbulence in strongly confined geometries is advanced. For example, while the flow becomes fully developed turbulence at $Ra\approx 200Ra_c$ in a $\varGamma =1$ cell, the same transition in a $\varGamma =1/20$ cell only requires $Ra\approx 3Ra_c$. Direct numerical simulation and linear stability analysis show that in the strongly confined regime, multiple vertically stacked roll structures appear just above the onset of convection. With an increase of the driving strength, the flow switches between different-roll states stochastically, resulting in no well-defined large-scale coherent flow. Owing to this new mechanism that only exists in systems with $\varGamma <1$, the flow becomes turbulent in a much earlier stage. These findings shed new light on how turbulence is generated in strongly confined geometries.

Using direct numerical simulations, we investigate the heat transport in bulk and boundary flows separately in rotating Rayleigh–Bénard convection in cylindrical cells. In the bulk we observe a steep scaling relationship between the Nusselt number ($Nu$) and the Rayleigh number ($Ra$), which is consistent with the results from simulations using periodic boundary conditions. For the boundary flow, we observe a power law $Nu_{BF}\sim (Ra/Ra_w)^1$ at the leading order, where $Nu_{BF}$ is the local Nusselt number of the boundary flow and $Ra_w$ is the onset Rayleigh number of the wall mode. We develop a model using the boundary layer marginal stability theory to explain this power law, and further show that a more precise description of the data can be obtained if a higher-order correction is introduced. A striking finding of our study is the observation of a sharp transition in flow state, manifested by a sudden drop in $Nu_{BF}$ with a corresponding collapse of the boundary flow coherency. After the transition, the boundary flow breaks into vortices, leading to a reduction in flow coherency and heat transport efficiency. As the physical properties of the vortices should not depend on the aspect ratio, $Nu_{BF}$ for all aspect ratios collapse together after the transition. Moreover, the centrifugal force helps trigger the breakdown of the coherent boundary flow state. For this reason, $Nu_{BF}$ for the cases with non-zero centrifugal force collapse together. We further develop a method that enables us to separate the contributions from the bulk and boundary flows in the global Nusselt number using only the global $Nu$ and it does not require the centrifugal force to be absent.

We investigate the spatial distribution and dynamics of the vortices in rotating Rayleigh–Bénard convection in a reduced Rayleigh number range $1.3\le Ra/Ra_{c}\le 83.1$. Under slow rotations ($Ra\approx 80\,Ra_{c}$), the vortices are distributed randomly, which is manifested by the size distribution of the Voronoi cells of the vortex centres being a standard $\varGamma$ distribution. The vortices exhibit Brownian-type horizontal motion in the parameter range $Ra\gtrsim 10\,Ra_{c}$. The probability density functions of the vortex displacements are, however, non-Gaussian at short time scales. At modest rotating rates ($4\,Ra_{c}\le Ra\lesssim 10\,Ra_{c}$), the centrifugal force leads to radial vortex motions, i.e. warm cyclones (cold anticyclones) moving towards (outwards from) the rotation axis. The horizontal scale of the vortices decreases with decreasing $Ra/Ra_c$, and the size distribution of their Voronoi cells deviates from the $\varGamma$ distribution. In the rapidly rotating regime ($1.6\,Ra_{c}\le Ra\le 4\,Ra_{c}$), the vortices are densely distributed. The hydrodynamic interaction of neighbouring vortices results in the formation of vortex clusters. Within clusters, cyclones exhibit inverse-centrifugal motion as they submit to the outward motion of the strong anticyclones, and the radial velocity of the anticyclones is enhanced. The radial mobility of isolated vortices, scaled by their vorticity strength, is shown to be a simple power function of the Froude number. For all flow regimes studied, we show that the number of vortices with a lifespan greater than $t$ decreases exponentially as $\exp ({-t/{\tau }})$ for large time, where $\tau$ represents the characteristic lifetime of long-lived vortices.

We report an experimental and numerical study on Rayleigh–Bénard convection in a slender rectangular geometry with the aspect ratio $\varGamma$ varying from 0.05 to 0.3 and a Rayleigh number range of $10^5\leqslant Ra\leqslant 3\times 10^9$. The Prandtl number is fixed at $Pr=4.38$. It is found that the onset of convection is postponed when the convection domain approaches the quasi-one-dimensional limit. The onset Rayleigh number shows a $Ra_c=328\varGamma ^{-4.18}$ scaling for the experiment and a $Ra_c=810\varGamma ^{-3.95}$ scaling for the simulation, both consistent with a theoretical prediction of $Ra_c\sim \varGamma ^{-4}$. Moreover, the effective Nusselt–Rayleigh scaling exponent $\beta =\partial (\log Nu)/\partial (\log Ra)$ near the onset of convection also shows a rapid increase with decreasing $\varGamma$. Power-law fits to the experimental and numerical data yield $\beta =0.290\varGamma ^{-0.90}$ and $\beta =0.564\varGamma ^{-0.92}$, respectively. Near onset, the flow shows a stretched cell structure. In this regime, the velocity and temperature variations in a horizontal cross-section are found to be almost invariant with height in the core region of a slender domain. As the Rayleigh number increases, the system evolves from the viscous dominant regime to a plume-controlled one, a feature of which is enhancement in the heat transport efficiency. Upon further increase of $Ra$, the flow comes back to the classical boundary-layer-controlled regime, in which the quasi-one-dimensional geometry has no apparent effect on the global heat transfer.

A novel experiment was performed in rotating Rayleigh–Bénard convection (RRBC), wherein the convection cell with radius $R$ was shifted away from the rotation axis by a distance $d$. In this case, the centrifugal force felt by a fluid parcel (characterized by the Froude number $Fr$) can be decomposed into an axisymmetrical part $Fr_R$ and a directed one $Fr_d$. It has been reported that the global heat transport enhances at $Fr_{d,c}$ and then reaches an optimal state at $Fr_{d,max}$ (Hu et al., Phys. Rev. Lett., vol. 127, 2021, 244501). In this paper, the local properties after the offset effects set in are investigated further, which show different features before and after $Fr_{d,max}$. The local temperature measurements at the cell centre reveal that the bulk flow turns from a turbulent state into a laminar state at $Fr_{d,max}$, which is consistent with the particle image velocimetry results. This transition can be qualitatively understood by an equivalent tilted RRBC system. As for the hot and cold coherent structures near the sidewall, their vertical temperature variations reach a minimum at $Fr_{d,max}$, implying that these structures are mostly uniform in the vertical direction at $Fr_{d,max}$. Their temperature contrasts show a linear dependence on $Fr_d$ and start to deviate from this linear behaviour when $Fr_d>Fr_{d,max}$. Besides the dominant effects of $Fr_d$, the secondary effects of $Fr_R$ are also investigated. Due to the positive effect of $+Fr_R$ on the cold structure and the negative effect of $-Fr_R$ on the hot one, the cold structure is more coherent than the hot one, but its size is smaller. The shift of the cold cluster centre from the farthest point is also larger than the shift of the hot one from the nearest point.

We present an experimental study of Rayleigh–Bénard convection using liquid metal alloy gallium-indium-tin as the working fluid with a Prandtl number of $Pr=0.029$. The flow state and the heat transport were measured in a Rayleigh number range of $1.2\times 10^{4} \le Ra \le 1.3\times 10^{7}$. The temperature fluctuation at the cell centre is used as a proxy for the flow state. It is found that, as $Ra$ increases from the lower end of the parameter range, the flow evolves from a convection state to an oscillation state, a chaotic state and finally a turbulent state for $Ra>10^5$. The study suggests that the large-scale circulation in the turbulent state is a residual of the cell structure near the onset of convection, which is in contrast with the case of $Pr\sim 1$, where the cell structure is transiently replaced by high order flow modes before the emergence of the large-scale circulation in the turbulent state. The evolution of the flow state is also reflected by the heat transport characterised by the Nusselt number $Nu$ and the probability density function (p.d.f.) of the temperature fluctuation at the cell centre. It is found that the effective local heat transport scaling exponent $\gamma$, i.e. $Nu\sim Ra^{\gamma }$, changes continuously from $\gamma =0.49$ at $Ra\sim 10^4$ to $\gamma =0.25$ for $Ra>10^6$. Meanwhile, the p.d.f. at the cell centre gradually evolves from a Gaussian-like shape before the transition to turbulence to an exponential-like shape in the turbulent state. For $Ra>10^6$, the flow shows self-similar behaviour, which is revealed by the universal shape of the p.d.f. of the temperature fluctuation at the cell centre and a $Nu=0.19Ra^{0.25}$ scaling for the heat transport.

We report an experimental study of the viscous boundary layer (BL) properties of turbulent Rayleigh–Bénard convection in a cylindrical cell. The velocity profile with all three components was measured from the centre of the bottom plate by an integrated home-made particle image velocimetry system. The Rayleigh number $Ra$ varied in the range $1.82 \times 10^8 \le Ra \le 5.26 \times 10^9$ and the Prandtl number $Pr$ was fixed at $Pr = 4.34$. The probability density function of the wall-shear stress indicates that using the velocity component in the mean large-scale circulation (LSC) plane alone may not be sufficient to characterise the viscous BL. Based on a dynamic wall-shear frame, we propose a method to reconstruct the measured full velocity profile which eliminates the effects of complex dynamics of the LSC. Various BL properties including the eddy viscosity are then obtained and analysed. It is found that, in the dynamic wall-shear frame, the eddy viscosity profiles along the centre line of the convection cell at different $Ra$ all collapse on a single master curve described by $\nu _t^d / \nu = 0.81 (z / \delta _u^d) ^{3.10 \pm 0.05}$. The Rayleigh number dependencies of several BL quantities are also determined in the dynamic frame, including the BL thickness $\delta _u^d$ (${\sim } Ra^{-0.21}$), the Reynolds number $Re^d$ (${\sim }Ra^{-0.46}$) and the shear Reynolds number $Re_s^d$ (${\sim } Ra^{0.24}$). Within the experimental uncertainty, these scaling exponents are the same as those obtained in the static laboratory frame. Finally, with the measured full velocity profile, we obtain the energy dissipation rate at the centre of the bottom plate $\varepsilon _{w}$, which is found to follow $\langle \varepsilon _{w} \rangle _t \sim Ra^{1.25}$.

We report a laboratory study on the scattering, energy dissipation and mean flow induced by internal gravity waves incident upon slopes with varying surface roughness. The experiment was performed in a rectangular box filled with thermally stratified water. The roughness of the slope surface, $\lambda$, defined as the height of a roughness element over its base width, and the off-criticality $\gamma =(\alpha -\beta )/\beta$, with $\alpha$ and $\beta$ being the angles of the incident wave and the slope, are used as two control parameters. The distribution of energy dissipation in the direction normal to the slope is found to be more uniform in the rough surface cases. Counter-intuitively, both the maximum value in the dissipation profile and the total energy dissipation near the slope are reduced by surface roughness under most circumstances. The measured peak width (the full width at half-maximum of the peaks) of the dissipation profile is found to be broadened significantly in the rough surface cases. We also observed that there exists a non-zero optimal off-criticality ($\gamma =0.17$ for the present measurement resolution) for the normalized average dissipation and total dissipation, which may be due to the strongest wave energy near the slope at this $\gamma$. Unlike surface roughness, the off-criticality has a small effect on the distribution of energy dissipation. Moreover, surface roughness is also found to change the structure of the scattering-induced mean flow and enhance its strength. The present study provides new perspectives on how the surface roughness on topographic features influences energy dissipation.

We present an experimental and numerical study of turbulent thermal convection in the presence of an effective horizontal buoyancy that generates extra shear at the boundary. Geometrical confinements are also applied by varying the streamwise and spanwise aspect ratios of the convection cell to condense the plumes. With these, we systematically explore the effects of plume and shear on heat transfer. It is found that a streamwise confinement results in increased plume coverage but decreased shear compared with spanwise confinement. The fact that streamwise confinement leads to a higher vertical heat transfer efficiency than the spanwise confined case suggests that the increase of plume coverage is the dominant effect responsible for the enhanced heat transfer. Our results highlight the potential applications of coherent structure manipulation in efficient passive heat transfer control and thermal engineering. We also analyse the energetics of the present system and derive the expression of mixing efficiency accordingly. The mixing efficiency is found to increase with both the buoyancy ratio and streamwise dimension.

The effect of centrifugal force in turbulent rotating Rayleigh–Bénard convection (RRBC) is studied experimentally in an aspect-ratio $\varGamma =1$ cylindrical convection cell and in the ranges of the Froude number $0.004\leq Fr \leq 0.363$ and the Rayleigh number $2.8\times 10^8 \leq Ra \leq 9.5\times 10^9$, and with the Prandtl number fixed at $Pr=4.34$. We use the bulk temperature anomaly to determine the onset Froude number $Fr_c$, beyond which the centrifugal effects cannot be regarded as insignificant. It is found that $Fr_c$ depends on $Ra$ as $Fr_c\sim Ra^{0.53}$, which may be understood qualitatively by the idea of local force balance. For $Fr>Fr_c$, the centrifugal effect is more pronounced for smaller $Ra$, which is also found for larger constant $1/Ro$. This implies that the response of the system to the centrifugal force depends on the flow states, which, in RRBC, is mainly determined by the competition between the buoyancy and Coriolis forces. Detailed analysis of the sidewall temperature signal shows results consistent with those obtained from the bulk temperature. Based on the above results, we propose a different division of the $1/Ro$–$Fr$ phase space than previously suggested. For the heat transport, the results under fixed $1/Ro$ show well-defined $Nu$–$Ra$ scalings, which can provide a better prediction for the heat transport when extrapolating to the unexplored regions in the phase space.

We present a numerical study on how tidal force and topography influence flow dynamics, transport and mixing in horizontal convection. Our results show that local energy dissipation near topography will be enhanced when the tide is sufficiently strong. Such enhancement is related to the height of the topography and increases as the tidal frequency $\omega$ decreases. The global dissipation is found to be less sensitive to the changes in $\omega$ when the latter becomes small and asymptotically approaches a constant value. We interpret the behaviour of the dissipation as a result of the competition among the dominant forces in the system. According to which mechanism prevails, the flow state of the system can be divided into three regimes, which are the buoyancy-, tide- and drag-control regimes. We show that the mixing efficiency $\eta$ for different tidal energy and topography height can be well described by a universal function $\eta \approx \eta _{HC}/(1+\mathcal {R})$, where $\eta _{HC}$ is the mixing efficiency in the absence of tide and $\mathcal {R}$ is the ratio between tidal and available potential energy inputs. With this, one can also determine the dominant mechanism at a certain ocean region. We further derive a power law relationship connecting the mixing coefficient and the tidal Reynolds number.

An experimental study of local temperature statistics in turbulent thermal convection is presented. The emissions of plumes and plume clusters are detected by an array of thermistors embedded in the top and bottom plates of a 1 m diameter convection cell. We found that the product STST′ of the temperature skewness ST and the skewness of the temperature time derivative ST′ from the embedded thermistors may be used as a measure of the intensity of plume emissions and that STST′ exhibits a pattern that corresponds well to the orientation of the large-scale circulation in the convecting flow. This is despite the fact that the temperature distribution across the plates is highly uniform, as indicated by the mean temperature of the embedded thermistors. By comparing the spatial distributions of STST′ and of the RMS temperature σ, we further find that the maximum temperature fluctuations take place in regions dominated by plume mixing instead of regions of plume emission. It is also found that temperature fluctuations inside the conducting plates have the same statistical and scaling properties as those in the cell centre.

We consider the situation of a misalignment between the global temperature gradient and gravity in thermal convection. In such a case an effective horizontal buoyancy arises that will significantly influence the transport properties of heat, mass and momentum. It may also change the flow morphology in turbulent convection. In this paper, we present an experimental and numerical study, using Rayleigh–Bénard convection as a platform, to explore systematically the effect of horizontal buoyancy on heat transport in turbulent thermal convection. Experimentally, a condition of increasing horizontal Rayleigh number ($Ra_H$, which is the non-dimensional horizontal thermal driving strength) under fixed vertical Rayleigh number ($Ra_V$, the non-dimensional vertical driving strength) is achieved by tilting the convection cell and simultaneously increasing the imposed temperature difference. We find that, with increasing horizontal to vertical buoyancy ratio ($\varLambda = Ra_H/Ra_V$), the overall heat transport manifests a monotonic increase in vertical heat transport ($Nu_V$) as well as a monotonic increase in its horizontal component ($Nu_H$). However, the horizontal Nusselt number is found to be approximately one order of magnitude smaller than the vertical Nusselt for the parameter range explored. We also show that the non-zero $Nu_H$ results from the broken azimuthal symmetry of the system induced by the horizontal buoyancy. We find that the enhancement of vertical heat transport comes from the increased shear generated by the horizontal buoyancy at the boundary layer. The effect of Prandtl number ($Pr$) is also studied numerically. Finally, we extend the Grossmann–Lohse theory to the case with an effective horizontal buoyancy, the result of which is successful in predicting $Nu_V(Ra_V,\varLambda ,Pr)$.

We present an investigation of the root-mean-square (r.m.s.) temperature $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70E}_{T}$ and the r.m.s. velocity $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70E}_{w}$ in the bulk of Rayleigh–Bénard turbulence, using new experimental data from the current study and experimental and numerical data from previous studies. We find that, once scaled by the convective temperature $\unicode[STIX]{x1D703}_{\ast }$, the value of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70E}_{T}$ at the cell centre is a constant ($\unicode[STIX]{x1D70E}_{T,c}/\unicode[STIX]{x1D703}_{\ast }\approx 0.85$) over a wide range of the Rayleigh number ($10^{8}\leqslant Ra\leqslant 10^{15}$) and the Prandtl number ($0.7\leqslant Pr\leqslant 23.34$), and is independent of the surface topographies of the top and bottom plates of the convection cell. A constant close to unity suggests that $\unicode[STIX]{x1D703}_{\ast }$ is a proper measure of the temperature fluctuation in the core region. On the other hand, $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70E}_{w,c}/w_{\ast }$, the vertical r.m.s. velocity at the cell centre scaled by the convective velocity $w_{\ast }$, shows a weak $Ra$-dependence (${\sim}Ra^{0.07\pm 0.02}$) over $10^{8}\leqslant Ra\leqslant 10^{10}$ at $Pr\sim 4.3$ and is independent of plate topography. Similar to a previous finding by He & Xia (Phys. Rev. Lett., vol. 122, 2019, 014503), we find that the r.m.s. temperature profile $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70E}_{T}(z)/\unicode[STIX]{x1D703}_{\ast }$ in the region of the mixing zone with a mean horizontal shear exhibits a power-law dependence on the distance $z$ from the plate, but now the universal profile applies to both smooth and rough surface topographies and over a wider range of $Ra$. The vertical r.m.s. velocity profile $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70E}_{w}(z)/w_{\ast }$ obeys a logarithmic dependence on $z$. The study thus demonstrates that the typical scales for the temperature and the velocity are the convective temperature $\unicode[STIX]{x1D703}_{\ast }$ and the convective velocity $w_{\ast }$, respectively. Finally, we note that $\unicode[STIX]{x1D703}_{\ast }$ may be utilised to study the flow regime transitions in ultrahigh-$Ra$-number turbulent convection.

We present an experimental study of the reversal of the large-scale circulation (LSC) in quasi-two-dimensional turbulent Rayleigh–Bénard convection. It is found that there exists a transition in the Rayleigh number ($Ra$) dependence of the reversal rate $f$ with two distinct scalings: for $Ra$ less than a transitional value $Ra_{t}$, the non-dimensionalized reversal rate $ft_{E}\sim Ra^{-1.09}$; however, for higher $Ra$ the scaling changes to $ft_{E}\sim Ra^{-3.06}$, where $t_{E}$ is the turnover time of the LSC. Flow visualization shows that this regime transition originates from a change in flow topology from a single-roll state to a new, less stable, abnormal single-roll state with substructures inside the single roll. The emergence of the substructures inside the LSC lowers the energy barrier for the flow reversals to occur and leads to a slower decay of $f$ with $Ra$. Detailed analysis reveals that, although it is the corner rolls that trigger the reversal event, the probability for the occurrence of reversals mainly depends on the stability of the LSC. This is supported by a model we proposed to predict the critical condition for the transition, which agrees well with the experimental results.
