In order to clarify and visualize the real state of the structural performances of ships in operation and establish a more optimal, data-driven framework for ship design, construction and operation, an industry-academia joint R&D project on the digital twin for ship structures (DTSS) was conducted in Japan. This paper presents the major achievements of the project. The DTSS aims to grasp the stress responses over the whole ship structure in waves by data assimilation that merges hull monitoring and numerical simulation. Three data assimilation methods, namely, the wave spectrum method, Kalman filter method, and inverse finite element method were used, and their effectiveness was examined through model and full-scale ship measurements. Methods for predicting short-term extreme responses and long-term cumulative fatigue damage were developed for navigation and maintenance support using statistical approaches. In comparison with conventional approaches, response predictions were significantly improved by DTSS using real response data in encountered waves. Utilization scenarios for DTSS in the maritime industry were presented from the viewpoints of navigation support, maintenance support, rule improvement, and product value improvement, together with future research needs for implementation in the maritime industry.

An outdoor sea-ice tank system for measuring the microwave properties of sea ice has been developed. With the natural cooling and the help of a cooling unit in the movable roof attached to the tank, the system can grow sea ice to about 50 cm thickness continuously without the effects of snowfall and/or melting. Portable microwave radiometers are attached beside the tank to measure the brightness temperature of the ice. As sea ice grows, the system can measure microwave brightness temperature, and seawater/ice temperature at each depth and thickness of sea ice. The bulk salinity of sea ice is measured by sampling. The following results were obtained from experiments conducted during two winters. (1) Rapid desalination was observed during the early stages of growth with ice thicknesses of 0–5 cm. (2) A new relational expression between ice thickness and bulk salinity at this thickness was obtained. (3) The rapid rise in microwave brightness temperature associated with the increase in sea-ice thickness during the early stages of sea-ice growth was captured in each frequency band. The microwave measurements from the sea-ice tank system are expected to provide new insights into the microwave properties of sea ice.

To determine annual layers for reconstructing the past environment at annual resolution from ice cores, we employed snow-stake data back to 1972, tritium content, solid electrical conductivity measurements (ECM) and stratigraphic properties for the 73m ice core at the H72 site, east Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica. the average annual surface mass balance at H72 is 307 mma–1w.e. during the last 27 years from continuous accumulation data, 317 mma–1 w.e. according to the densification model and 311 mma–1 w.e. according to the average surface mass balance for 167 years based on annual-layer counting. the ECM age is closely coincident with tritium age, and corresponds with the snow-stake record back to AD 1972 from the surface to 15 m depth. the H72 ice core is dated as AD 1831by ECMat 73.16 mdepth.The time series of yearly surface mass balance at H72 shows an almost constant 311 mm a–1 w.e. for the last 167 years. the oxygen-isotope records indicate a significant trend to lower values, with negative gradient of 1.7% (100 years)–1.

We investigated the feasibility of using multi-polarization Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data to estimate the thickness of undeformed first-year ice. Analysis of the radar Signatures for the C- and L-bands Showed that the correlation between the ice thickness and VV-to-HH backscattering ratio is larger than the correlation between the ice thicknesses and the backscattering coefficients. This is in part because the ice Surface Salinity and hence the Surface reflection coefficient decreases as the ice thickens. The backscattering ratio had low Sensitivity to the Small-scale ice Surface roughness for the C-band and is almost independent of roughness at L-band. Given that the ratio is most Sensitive to ice Surface dielectric constants, which depend on Salinity, we developed an algorithm for retrieving the ice thickness that is based on the backscattering ratio and on the integral-equation-method (IEM) Surface Scattering model. Comparison of the observed and estimated ice thicknesses Showed that the correlation was much better when the thicknesses were estimated using the backscattering ratio than when the backscattering coefficient was used directly. The algorithm also performed better than previous retrievals using an empirical technique.

About 20 years ago, the discovery of an AlN buffer layer lead to the breakthrough in epitaxial growth of GaN layers with mirror-like surface, using a metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) technique on sapphire substrates. Since then, extensive efforts have been continued to develop a conductive buffer layer/substrate for MOCVD-grown GaN layers to improve light emission of GaN light-emitting diodes. In the present study, we produced MOCVD-grown, continuous, flat epitaxial GaN layers on nitrogen enriched TiN buffer layers with the upper limit of the nitrogen content of TiN deposited at room temperature (RT) on sapphire substrates. It was concluded that the nitrogen enrichment would reduce significantly the TiN/GaN interfacial energy. The RT deposition of the TiN buffer layers suppresses their grain growth during the nitrogen enrichment and the grain size refining must increase nucleation site of GaN. In addition, threading dislocation density in the GaN layers grown on TiN was much lower than that in the GaN layers grown on AlN.

We report the discovery of a probable large-scale structure composed of many galaxy clumps around the known twin clusters at $z=1.26$ and $z=1.27$ in the Lynx region. Our analysis is based on deep, panoramic, and multi-colour imaging with the Suprime-Cam on the 8.2 m Subaru telescope. We apply a photometric redshift technique to extract plausible cluster members at $z\sim1.27$ down to $\sim M^\ast+2.5$. From the 2-D distribution of these photometrically selected galaxies, we newly identify seven candidates of galaxy groups or clusters where the surface density of red galaxies is significantly high ($>$5$\sigma$), in addition to the two known clusters, comprising the largest most distant supercluster ever identified.To search for other articles by the author(s) go to: http://adsabs.harvard.edu/abstract_service.html

The CCD we use is TC215 manufactured by TI, Japan. The pixel size is 12 microns square. It is a virtual phase CCD which has a peak QE of 60% at 700 nm and 15% QE at 350 nm. It is commercially available in a package, which is too big to meet our requirement for CCD spacing. We therefore put the CCD in a specially made compact package. Each chip is mounted on a machined ceramic spacer whose thermal coefficient is matched with that of the CCD package. We glue each CCD chip on the spacer under a microscope to measure YHE x − y position and height. Then we screw the CCD chip + spacer on a copper motherboard with the help of the gauge which has a planned grid with a good accuracy. The alignment accuracy we can get with such set-up procedures is an order of 5 microns (< 0.5 pixel) in the horizontal direction and 10 microns in the vertical direction.
