Differential item functioning (DIF) analysis is an important step in establishing the validity of measurements. Most traditional methods for DIF analysis use an item-by-item strategy via anchor items that are assumed DIF-free. If anchor items are flawed, these methods will yield misleading results due to biased scales. In this article, based on the fact that the item’s relative change of difficulty difference (RCD) does not depend on the mean ability of individual groups, a new DIF detection method (RCD-DIF) is proposed by comparing the observed differences against those with simulated data that are known DIF-free. The RCD-DIF method consists of a D-QQ (quantile quantile) plot that permits the identification of internal references points (similar to anchor items), a RCD-QQ plot that facilitates visual examination of DIF, and a RCD graphical test that synchronizes DIF analysis at the test level with that at the item level via confidence intervals on individual items. The RCD procedure visually reveals the overall pattern of DIF in the test and the size of DIF for each item and is expected to work properly even when the majority of the items possess DIF and the DIF pattern is unbalanced. Results of two simulation studies indicate that the RCD graphical test has Type I error rate comparable to those of existing methods but with greater power.

An experimental investigation is conducted to study the flow patterns, spectral properties and energy fluxes in thin-layer turbulence with varying system sizes and damping rates. It is found that although a system-size vortex (an indicator of spectral condensation) occurs for small system sizes and does not for large ones, the spectra for different system sizes consistently exhibit a scaling close to $k^{-3}$ in inverse cascade (another indicator of spectral condensation). On the other hand, under a fixed system size larger than the friction-dominated length scale, the energy spectrum in the inverse cascade range changes from $k^{-3}$ to $k^{-5/3}$ as the damping rate increases, suggesting that the friction-dominated length scale may not be a suitable parameter for predicting spectral transition. At lower damping rates and large system sizes, turbulent structures grow larger via inverse cascade, manifesting as long streamers, and the small-scale vortices are suppressed. This suppression leads to a reduction of energy flux at intermediate scales and a change in the spectral shape. The dimensionless Taylor microscale is found to exhibit a monotonic dependence on the damping rate. With the reduction in the damping rate, the Taylor microscale increases to become comparable with the forcing scale, and the spectrum in inverse cascade transits to a steeper scaling, $k^{-3}$, indicating that the dimensionless Taylor microscale may be used as a diagnostic parameter for spectral transition.

This paper systematically investigated the impact mechanisms of proton irradiation, atomic oxygen irradiation and space debris collision, both individually and in combination, on the laser damage threshold and damage evolution characteristics of HfO2/SiO2 triple-band high-reflection films and fused silica substrates using a simulated near-Earth space radiation experimental system. For the high-reflection film samples, the damage thresholds decreased by 15.38%, 13.12% and 46.80% after proton, atomic oxygen and simulated space debris (penetration) irradiation, respectively. The coupling irradiation of the first two factors resulted in a decrease of 26.93%, while the combined effect of all the three factors led to a reduction of 63.19%. Similarly, the fused silica substrates exhibited the same pattern of laser damage performance degradation. Notably, the study employed high-precision fixed-point in situ measurement techniques to track in detail the microstructural changes, surface roughness and optical-thermal absorption intensity before and after proton and atomic oxygen irradiation at the same location, thus providing a more accurate and comprehensive analysis of the damage mechanisms. In addition, simulations were conducted to quantitatively analyze the transmission trajectories and concentration distribution lines of protons and atomic oxygen incident at specific angles into the target material. The research findings contribute to elucidating the laser damage performance degradation mechanism of transmissive elements in near-Earth space environments and provide technical support for the development of high-damage-threshold optical components resistant to space radiation.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on the mental health of healthcare workers (HCWs). We aimed to identify the factors associated with depression among HCWs during the pandemic. We conducted literature search using eight electronic databases up to July 27 2022. Observational studies with more than 200 participants investigating correlates of depression in HCWs after COVID-19 outbreak were included. We used fixed- and random-effects models to pool odds ratios (ORs) across studies, and Cochran's chi-squared test and I2 statistics to assess study heterogeneity. Publication bias was evaluated by funnel plots. Thirty-five studies involving 44,362 HCWs met the inclusion criteria. Female (OR=1.50, 95% CI [1.23,1.84]), single (OR=1.36, 95% CI [1.21,1.54]), nurse (OR=1.69, 95% CI [1.28,2.25]), history of mental diseases (OR=2.53, 95% CI [1.78,3.58]), frontline (OR=1.79, 95% CI [1.38,2.32]), health anxiety due to COVID-19 (OR=1.88, 95% CI [1.29,2.76]), working in isolation wards (OR=1.98, 95% CI [1.38,2.84]), and insufficient personal protective equipment (OR=1.49, 95% CI [1.33,1.67]) were associated with increased risk of depression. Instead, HCWs with a positive professional prospect (OR=0.34, 95% CI [0.24,0.49]) were less likely to be depressed. This meta-analysis provides up-to-date evidence on the factors linked to depression among HCWs during the COVID-19 pandemic. Given the persistent threats posed by COVID-19, early screening is crucial for the intervention and prevention of depression in HCWs.

With the rapid rise in the prevalence of non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) diseases across the world, the microbiological diagnosis of NTM isolates is becoming increasingly important for the diagnosis and treatment of NTM disease. In this study, the clinical presentation, species distribution and drug susceptibility of patients with NTM disease visiting the Chongqing Public Health Medical Centre during March 2016–April 2019 were retrospectively analysed. Among the 146 patients with NTM disease, eight NTM species (complex) were identified. The predominant NTM species in these patients were identified to be Mycobacterium abscessus complex (53, 36.3%), M. intracellulare (38, 26%) and M. fortuitum (17, 11.7%). In addition, two or more species were isolated from 7.5% of the patients. Pulmonary NTM disease (142, 97.3%) showed the highest prevalence among the patients. It was observed that 40.1% of the patients with pulmonary NTM disease had chronic pulmonary obstructive disease and bronchiectasis, while 22.5% had prior tuberculosis. Male patients showed more association with the conditions of cough and haemoptysis than the female patients. In an in vitro antimicrobial susceptibility testing, most of the species showed susceptibility to linezolid, amikacin and clarithromycin, while M. fortuitum exhibited low susceptibility to tobramycin. In conclusion, the prevalence of NTM disease, especially that of the pulmonary NTM disease, is common in Southwest China. Species identification and drug susceptibility testing are thus extremely important to ensure appropriate treatment regimens for patient care and management.

Drunken horse grass [Achnatherum inebrians (Hance) Keng] is a perennial poisonous weed in western China. A comprehensive understanding of the ecological response of A. inebrians germination to environmental factors would facilitate the formulation of better management strategies for this weed. Experiments were conducted under laboratory conditions to assess the effects of various abiotic factors, including temperature, light, water, pH, and burial depth, on the germination and seedling emergence of A. inebrians. The seeds germinated at constant temperatures of 15, 20, 25, 30, and 35 C and in alternating-temperature regimes of 15/5, 20/10, 25/15, 30/20, 35/25, and 40/30 C, and the germination percentages under constant and alternating temperatures ranged from 51% to 94% and 15% to 93%, respectively. Maximum germination occurred at a constant temperature of 25 C, and germination was prevented at 45/35 C. Light did not appear to affect germination. The germination percentage of seeds was more than 75% in the pH range of 5 to 10, with the highest germination percentage at pH 6. The seeds germinated at osmotic potentials of 0 MPa to −1.0 MPa, but decreasing osmotic potential inhibited germination, with no germination at −1.2MPa. After 21 d of low osmotic stress, the seeds that did not germinate after rehydration had not lost their vitality. The seedling emergence percentage was highest (90%) when seeds were buried at 1 cm, but declined with increasing burial depth, with no emergence at 9 cm. Deep tillage may be effective in limiting the germination and emergence of this species. The results of this study provide useful information on the conditions necessary for A. inebrians germination and provide a theoretical basis for science-based prediction, prevention, and control of this species.

The dynamical stability of the cable-driven lower-limb rehabilitation training robot (CLLRTR) is a crucial question. Based on the established dynamics model of CLLRTR, the solution to the wrench closure of the under-constrained system is presented. Secondly, the stability index of CLLRTR is proposed by the Krasovski method. Finally, in order to analyze the stability distribution of CLLRTR in the workspace, the stability evaluation index in the workspace is calculated using the eigenvalue decomposition method. The stability distribution laws of CLLRTR are further verified by the experimental study. The results provide references for studying trajectory planning and anti-pendulum control of CLLRTR.

The accounting information of a firm is analogous to the characteristics of an organism that contain biological information that influences decisions; such characteristics result from organizational routines (genes). Organizational routines result from organizational learning, and learning from an associated company is an efficient approach for a new venture to establish routines. The study results revealed that the subsidiaries inherited routines from the parent companies related to financial ratios, so we suggest that people should judge the adequacy of a firm’s financial situation by not only referring to the standard of its industry but also to its parent company.

We study the effects of Dy, Nb, and Ga additions on the microstructure and magnetic properties of Nd2Fe14B/α-Fe nanocomposites. Dy, Nb, and Ga additions inhibit the growth of the soft magnetic α-Fe phase. Dy and Nb additions are able to refine the microstructure, whereas Ga addition plays only a minor role in prohibiting crystal growth. The magnetic properties are sensitive to Dy, Nb, and Ga additions. The Dy-containing alloy enhances the intrinsic coercivity of 872 kA/m because Dy partially replaces Nd, forming (Nd, Dy)2Fe14B. Nb addition refines the microstructure, and consequently increases the exchange coupling between magnetic grains. The Nd9.5Fe75.4Co5Zr3B6.5Ga0.6 alloy exhibits the highest remanence (0.92 T) due to Ga addition.

In this paper, we proposed a simple approach to analyse the efficiency and propulsive characteristics of the high-altitude propeller in accordance to the Vortex Lattice Lifting line Method (VLM) theory, which is commonly used in preliminary design and parametric studies of propeller propulsion. The Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method was used to obtain aerofoil aerodynamic data. The optimal pitch angle and propeller blade chord length (along the radial direction) can be calculated using the information from the database. The propeller wake model sees helical slipstreams applied to both lightly and moderately loaded propellers. The proposed method is capable of identifying the optimal efficiency through varying the number of propeller blades, radius and the rotational speed. The relationship between the optimal efficiency and design parameters is then established. This method was verified using CFD calculations.

One important approach to increasing High magnetic fields (HMF) beyond what is now possible is to improve the properties of various composite materials used as both conductors and structural support. Typical conductors for high field magnets are Cu-based metal-metal composites. To achieve high mechanical strength, these composites are fabricated by cold deformation, which introduces high densities of interfaces along with lattice distortions. During the operation of a magnet, mechanical load, high magnetic field, extreme temperatures and other stressors are imposed on the materials, causing them to be further “processed”. The composite conductors in a magnet, for example, may undergo high temperatures, which reduce lattice distortions or soften the material. At the same time, HMF may increase lattice distortion, leading to a complex change in interface characteristics. Both the mechanical properties of the conductors, like the tensile and yield strength, and the electric conductivity of the composites are closely connected to changes in lattice distortion and interface density. Understanding these changes helps us to assure that materials can operate in optimized conditions during most of magnets’ service life. Maximizing service life is critical, given the high cost of building and operating high field magnets. The goal of this paper is to 1) show our understanding of changes that occur in the properties of selected materials during the fabrication and under HMF and 2) to discuss how those changes relate to the microstructure of these materials and consequently to the service life of high field magnets.

Mn-Ga alloys have shown promising hard magnetic properties, even though thesealloys contain no rare-earth metals. However, much work is needed before Mn-Gaalloys become viable permanent magnets for applications. One of the challengesis to enhance the remanence. One technique to improve this property is applyinga magnetic field during the heat treatment process. Magnetic annealing canpromote phase transformation of the phases with high magnetic moment. Thisresults in an increased remanence. Bulk samples of Mn-Ga alloys were made bymechanically alloying in order to create a nanostructured composite, followed byheat treatments in the presence of a 31 T magnetic field. The heat treatmenttemperatures were kept low in order to keep the refined microstructure. All thealloys exhibit hard magnetic properties at room temperature with largecoercivity. This work reports findings of magnetic field annealed Mn-Ga bulkthat exhibit high coercivities up to 19.4 kOe and increased remanence of 50%over the binary system, achieving values up to 6.9 emu/g. This is the highestcoercivity reported in bulk Mn-Ga samples.

We studied the effects of four non-nutrient environmental factors (temperature, salinity, irradiance and pH) on the growth inhibition of the macroalgae Ulva pertusa (Chlorophyta) upon the microalgae Heterosigma akashiwo (Rhaphidophyta). Experiments were conducted in single-factor incubation and various two-factor combination experiments in which temperature (10, 15, 25 and 30°C), salinity (10, 20, 30 and 40 g kg−1 water), irradiance (20, 100, 200 and 400 μmol m−2 s−1), and pH (5.5, 7, 8.5 and 10) were varied systematically. The growth rates of U. pertusa and H. akashiwo and the rate of microalgal growth inhibition were altered significantly by changing some of the non-nutrient factors in both the single-factor and the two-factor experiments. The optimal growth conditions for U. pertusa were 20–25°C, salinity of 30 g kg−1, irradiance level of 200–400 μmol m−2 s−1, and pH 8.5–10; optimal conditions for H. akashiwo growth were 25°C, 30 g kg−1, 100 μmol m−2 s−1 and pH 8.5, respectively. The growth inhibitory influence of U. pertusa on H. akashiwo was strongest at 25°C with low salinity (10 g kg−1), high irradiance (400 μmol m−2 s−1) and high alkalinity (pH = 10). The results of this study may be helpful in the development of methods for using green macroalgae to control the proliferation of microalgae in harmful algal blooms (HABs). In particular, these findings provide guidance regarding optimum levels of non-nutrient environmental factors in confined areas, such as aquaculture factories.

The anatomical substrate of eosinophilic fasciitis (EF) was studied in 15 muscle biopsy specimens of this disease, six of which included the dermis and subcutaneous tissue. As controls, 94 postmortem muscle specimens from patients dying of non-muscular diseases were used. Of these 94 specimens, 22 (23.4%) showed practically no deep fascia and 72 specimens showed a single dense bundle of collagen with no distinction between deep fascia and epimysium. The 15 specimens of EF showed thickening and inflammatory infiltration of varying degrees in the deep fascia, epimysium, perimysium, endomysium and also in muscle. We conclude that the anatomical substrate of EF is not confined to the deep fascia, but involves other structures including mysia and muscle itself. Most reported cases of EF in the literature do not even describe muscle. A comparative study of 15 biopsy specimens of polymyositis and dermatomyositis with those of EF revealed only quantitative differences in the histopathological changes of muscle and mysia, inflammatory infiltrate and eosinophilia. We suggest that the diseases are more closely related than previously recognized.

In this paper, we document that an application of a moving average timing strategy of technical analysis to portfolios sorted by volatility generates investment timing portfolios that substantially outperform the buy-and-hold strategy. For high-volatility portfolios, the abnormal returns, relative to the capital asset pricing model (CAPM) and the Fama-French 3-factor models, are of great economic significance, and are greater than those from the well-known momentum strategy. Moreover, they cannot be explained by market timing ability, investor sentiment, default, and liquidity risks. Similar results also hold if the portfolios are sorted based on other proxies of information uncertainty.

We report the installation and performance evaluation of a probe aberration-corrected high-resolution JEOL JEM-ARM200F transmission electron microscope (TEM). We provide details on construction of the room that enables us to obtain scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) data without any evident distortions/noise from the external environment. The microscope routinely delivers expected performance. We show that the highest STEM spatial resolution and energy resolution achieved with this microscope are 0.078 nm and 0.34 eV, respectively. We report a direct comparative evaluation of the performance of this microscope with a Schottky thermal field-emission gun versus a cold field-emission gun. Cold field-emission illumination improves spatial resolution of the high current probe for analytical spectroscopy, the TEM information limit, and the electron energy resolution compared to the Schottky thermal field-emission source.

Traffic flow is modeled by a conservation law describing the density of cars. It isassumed that each driver chooses his own departure time in order to minimize the sum of adeparture and an arrival cost. There are N groups of drivers, Thei-th group consists of κidrivers, sharing the same departure and arrival costsϕi(t),ψi(t).For any given population sizesκ1,...,κn,we prove the existence of a Nash equilibrium solution, where no driver can lower his owntotal cost by choosing a different departure time. The possible non-uniqueness, and acharacterization of this Nash equilibrium solution, are also discussed.
