A distinguishing feature of the bi-stable wake is that the wake persists in either of two preferred states for a sufficiently long time. Aiming to understand the persistence mechanism, this paper numerically investigates the airwake characteristics of the Chalmers ship model (CSM) using large eddy simulation with a wall-adapting local-eddy viscosity model and is complemented by experimental testings for validations. There are two cases of interest: (i) the baseline CSM with a sharp-edged superstructure front that induces massive boundary layer separation; (ii) the front-rounded (FR) CSM with suppressed flow separation. During a characteristic time ($t^*$) of 1142 (26.5 s), the baseline case has a frequently switching wake, whereas the FR wake maintains a stable asymmetric structure with only one switch attempt. To understand the different wake behaviours, the study starts by analysing wake flow structures, vortex cores and the wake dynamics, followed by investigating the instantaneous flow physics. Results suggest that the baseline wake has a weak bi-stable pattern, whereas the FR wake behaves similarly to a reflectional symmetry breaking state of a potential bi-stable wake. The wake switching is found to be driven by the tilting of (vertical-oriented) $z$-vorticity sheets from either side of the base toward the centre. This tilting behaviour is subjected to the high-magnitude vorticity that sheds from the upstream flow separation at the front sharp edges. With the sharp edges rounded in the FR case, the upstream vorticity is mitigated and the tilting effect is significantly reduced, leading to a more stable wake structure. The reasoning provided in the paper potentially explains the persistence mechanism of the bi-stable wake.

Firms with higher R&D intensity subsequently experience higher stock returns in international stock markets, highlighting the role of intangible investments in international asset pricing. The R&D effect is stronger in countries where growth option risk is more likely priced, but is unrelated to country characteristics representing market sentiments and limits-of-arbitrage. Moreover, we find that R&D intensity is associated with higher future operating performance, return volatility, and default likelihood. Our evidence suggests that the cross sectional relation between R&D intensity and stock returns is more likely attributable to risk premium than to mispricing.

miR-124, a brain-specific microRNA, was originally considered as a key regulator in neuronal differentiation and the development of the nervous system. Here we showed that miR-124 expression was suppressed in patients with epilepsy and rats after drug induced-seizures. Intrahippocampal administration of a miR-124 duplex led to alleviated seizure severity and prolonged onset latency in two rat models (pentylenetetrazole- and pilocarpine-induced seizures), while miR-124 inhibitor led to shortened onset latency in pilocarpine-induced seizure rat models. Moreover, the result of local field potentials (LFPs) records further demonstrated miR-124 may have anti-epilepsy function. Inhibition of neuronal firing by miR-124 was associated with the suppression of mEPSC, AMPAR- and NMDAR-mediated currents, which were accompanied by decreased surface expression of NMDAR. In addition, miR-124 injection resulted in decreased activity and expression of cAMP-response element-binding protein1 (CREB1). a key regulator in epileptogenesis. A dual-luciferase reporter assay was used to confirm that miR-124 targeted directly the 3′UTR of CREB1 gene and repressed the CREB1 expression in HEK293T cells. Immunoprecipitation studies confirmed that the CREB1 antibody effectively precipitated CREB1 and NMDAR1 but not GLUR1 from rat brain hippocampus. These results revealed a previously unknown function of miR-124 in neuronal excitability and provided a new insight into molecular mechanisms underlying epilepsy.

This paper is devoted to time domain numerical solutions of two-dimensional (2D) material interface problems governed by the transverse magnetic (TM) and transverse electric (TE) Maxwell's equations with discontinuous electromagnetic solutions. Due to the discontinuity in wave solutions across the interface, the usual numerical methods will converge slowly or even fail to converge. This calls for the development of advanced interface treatments for popular Maxwell solvers. We will investigate such interface treatments by considering two typical Maxwell solvers – one based on collocation formulation and another based on Galerkin formulation. To restore the accuracy reduction of the collocation finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) algorithm near an interface, the physical jump conditions relating discontinuous wave solutions on both sides of the interface must be rigorously enforced. For this purpose, a novel matched interface and boundary (MIB) scheme is proposed in this work, in which new jump conditions are derived so that the discontinuous and staggered features of electric and magnetic field components can be accommodated. The resulting MIB time-domain (MIBTD) scheme satisfies the jump conditions locally and suppresses the staircase approximation errors completely over the Yee lattices. In the discontinuous Galerkin time-domain (DGTD) algorithm – a popular GalerkinMaxwell solver, a proper numerical flux can be designed to accurately capture the jumps in the electromagnetic waves across the interface and automatically preserves the discontinuity in the explicit time integration. The DGTD solution to Maxwell interface problems is explored in this work, by considering a nodal based high order discontinuous Galerkin method. In benchmark TM and TE tests with analytical solutions, both MIBTD and DGTD schemes achieve the second order of accuracy in solving circular interfaces. In comparison, the numerical convergence of the MIBTD method is slightly more uniform, while the DGTD method is more flexible and robust.

A double-angle indenter model is proposed to determine the representative strain in the indentation process, and a new method is then developed aiming at the extraction of the yield strength and strain-hardening exponent from the surface layer of metals, because surface properties, especially in a small region, may differ from bulk ones and are sometimes closer to service properties such as fatigue strength, wear, and corrosion resistance. First, the isotropic metal was analyzed, the elastic modulus of which was fixed at 128 GPa, the yield strength was 50 to 200 MPa, and the strain-hardening exponent was 0.1 to 0.5. By introducing the yield strain to substitute the yield strength in the calculation, it was proved that the model can cover the majority of metals because the introduced weight parameter λ is independent of the yield strength and the elastic modulus, although it depends on the strain-hardening exponent to some extent. For the determination of yield strain εY (or yield strength Y), the precision is better for low C/E and low n, whereas for the determination of strain-hardening exponent n, the precision is better for high C/E and low εY. By using the double-angle indenter, the material constitutive relationship at the surface can be evaluated from just one indentation without any other measurements.

The oxidation behavior of three types of plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) processed Ti–Si–C–N coatings with silicon content ranging from 4.3 to 11.6 at.% has been investigated at high temperatures. Systematic characterization was conducted to study the evolution of composition, phase constituents, hardness, surface morphologies, microstructures, and grain size during oxidation. A two-stage oxidation process was observed between 700 and 1000 °C for all three coatings. Experimental results indicate that a superhardness of 40 GPa can be maintained up to 700, 800, and 850 °C for 4.3, 7.4, and 11.6 at.% Si coatings, respectively; the dual-phased 7.4 and 11.6 at.% Si coatings show a better oxidation resistance than the single-phased 4.3 at.% Si coating. On the basis of the results, a mechanism is proposed to explain the relationship between the nanostructure and oxidation behavior.

A new type of Ti–Si–C–N coatings deposited on high-speed steel substrate by means of pulsed direct current (dc) plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition was investigated. The as-deposited coatings were characterized systematically by using energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and microhardness with particular attention paid to the microstructure of the coatings. It has been shown that C content has a profound effect on the microstructure and hardness of coatings. TEM and XRD analyses revealed that these coatings consist of the dominate Ti(C, N) with a silicide (TiSi2, Si3N4, or SiC, depending on the C content in the coatings). The crystallite sizes are in the range of 8–35 nm, which decrease with increasing C content. The Ti–Si–C–N coatings with high C content (25.2–38.6 at.%) possess superhardness (41–48 GPa). This can be attributed to the grain refinement/grain boundary hardening and dispersion hardening of the hard, nanosized crystalline Si3N4 or SiC formed in the deposition.

An extended microbridge test (eMBT) was proposed to assess the adhesion of metallic coatings on metallic substrates. Through loading on the backside of narrow striped freestanding coatings, a two-dimensional stable interfacial delamination was introduced. A cross-sectional scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to examine the interfacial fracture process. A large deflection solution for elastic deformation of the coating was derived, and an approximate model was established for the estimate of interfacial crack extension force G. The eMBT samples of electroplated Ni coatings on C45 carbon steel substrate were tested, and the measured interfacial fracture toughness was about 5.28 J/m2. Cross-sectional SEM examination showed that the interface crack extended along the interface plane, and therefore the interfacial fracture proceeded by the debonding of Ni/steel interface.
