A period of the life course where optimal nutrition and food security are crucial for the life-long health and wellbeing of women/birthing parents and infants is preconception, pregnancy, and infancy.(1) It is estimated that nearly one in every four households with pre-school children (0-4 years) experience food insecurity (FI) in the UK.(2) Yet, we lack an evidence-base exploring experiences of FI in this life course stage.(3,4) This study aimed to explore women’s experiences of food insecurity during and after pregnancy, including its influence on infant feeding decisions.
This study was ethically approved (Ref No: LRS/DP-23/24-39437) and pre-registered on OSF Registries (https://osf.io/9hn6r). Semi-structured mixed format individual interviews were conducted between November 2023 and February 2024. Pregnant individuals, those who had given birth ≤12 months ago, ≥18 years old, food insecure, residing in South London and with recourse to public funds were recruited through purposive sampling. The topic guide was informed by FI, pregnancy and postpartum related literature and piloted (n = 2). Interviews were audiorecorded and professionally transcribed. Demographic data was summarised using SPSS. Inductive thematic analysis was used to analyse the data and was completed using NVivo.
Eleven food insecure participants (2 pregnant, 9 new mothers; 2 White European, 9 Black African/Caribbean/British women) participated in the study. Six women were 0-6 months postpartum, and 3 women were between 6-12 months postpartum. The preliminary findings are represented by three themes: 1) A dichotomy: knowing vs affording, 2) Adaptive food coping strategies, and 3) Infant feeding practices. Participants shared detailed accounts of valuing a healthy diet and adapting food practices, yet they still were unable to meet their dietary needs and desires during and after pregnancy. Participants described worry around breastmilk supply; quality and quantity. Complimentary feeding was also identified as a source of worry. “She is still breastfeeding fully. I don’t want to change to milk, which maybe, sometimes, I might not be able to afford it…I won’t stop until she is 1.”Whilst the cost of formula feeding was a driver of a more severe experience of FI.
Policy and practice recommendations include enhancing local breastfeeding support to address FI specific concerns around breastmilk supply and at national level, advocating for greater support for adequate healthy food provision and for a price cap on infant formula. Future interventions must support maternal mental health given the high cognitive stress identified with living with FI during and after pregnancy. Further high-quality research is needed 1) amongst asylum seekers and refugees and non-English speakers who may also experience FI, and 2) exploring cultural influences on breastfeeding and the relationship with FI.
The estimated global preterm birth rate in 20201 was more than 10% of livebirths or 13.4 million infants. Nutrition in the neonatal period is a key factor to optimise growth, neurodevelopment, and later metabolic disease risk2. There is no consensus on optimal nutrition for preterm infants, leading to substantial practice variation3. We aimed to assess the quality of nutritional guidelines for preterm infants, the consistency of recommendations, and the gaps in these recommendations. This review is reported using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) 2020 checklist. The study protocol was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42022327248). We searched six databases and 44 websites for nutritional guidelines for preterm infants before first hospital discharge, which were endorsed, prepared, or authorised by a regional, national, or international body, written in English, and published between 2012-2023. Two reviewers independently screened articles and extracted relevant data including nutritional recommendations (ranges or descriptions), the quality of recommendations (certainty of evidence and strength of recommendation), and gaps in recommendations, defined as those identified by the guidelines or when recommendations were based on very low certainty evidence. Disagreements were resolved by discussion or a third reviewer. Four reviewers appraised the included guidelines using AGREE II. We identified 7051 records, 27 guidelines were included in the review, 26% of which were of high quality. Most guidelines lacked stakeholder involvement and rigour of development. Twelve guidelines had recommendations for macronutrient intake, 18 for micronutrient intake, 12 for feeding, eight for fortification, and 14 for monitoring of nutritional adequacy. Only two guidelines provided recommendations for all five of these aspects. We found considerable variation in recommendations, many of which lacked details of certainty of evidence and strength of recommendation. Recommendations for feeding types and breastmilk fortification were consistent among high quality guidelines, but recommendations varied for intakes of almost all nutrients and monitoring of nutritional adequacy. Different guidelines gave different certainty of evidence for the same recommendations. Most gaps in recommendations were due to a very low certainty of evidence. Future development of nutritional guidelines for preterm infants should follow the standard guideline development method and ensure rigorous process including stakeholders’ involvement to improve the reporting of strength of recommendation, certainty of evidence, and gaps in recommendation. Evidence is needed to support recommendations about macro and micronutrient intakes, breastmilk fortification, and markers on adequacy of intake of different nutrients.
While existing work has demonstrated that campaign donations can buy access to benefits such as favorable legislation and preferential contracting, we highlight another use of campaign contributions: buying reductions in regulatory enforcement. Specifically, we argue that in return for campaign contributions, Colombian mayors who rely on donor-funding (compared with those who do not) choose not to enforce sanctions against illegal deforestation activities. Using a regression discontinuity design, we show that deforestation is significantly higher in municipalities that elect donor-funded as opposed to self-funded politicians. Further analysis shows that only part of this effect can be explained by differences in contracting practices by donor-funded mayors. Instead, evidence of heterogeneity in the effects according to the presence of alternative formal and informal enforcement institutions, and analysis of fire clearance, support the interpretation that campaign contributions buy reductions in the enforcement of environmental regulations.
From 2014 to 2020, we compiled radiocarbon ages from the lower 48 states, creating a database of more than 100,000 archaeological, geological, and paleontological ages that will be freely available to researchers through the Canadian Archaeological Radiocarbon Database. Here, we discuss the process used to compile ages, general characteristics of the database, and lessons learned from this exercise in “big data” compilation.
Maternal periconceptional undernutrition (PCUN) affected fetal pancreatic maturation in late gestation lambs and impaired glucose tolerance in 10-month-old sheep. To examine the importance of the timing of maternal undernutrition around conception, a further cohort was born to PCUN ewes [undernourished for 61 d before conception (PreC), 30 d after conception (PostC), or 61 d before until 30 d after conception (PrePostC)], or normally fed ewes (Control) (n = 15–20/group). We compared glucose tolerance, insulin secretion, and sensitivity at 36 months of age. We also examined protein expression of insulin signalling proteins in muscle from these animals and in muscle from a fetal cohort (132 d of gestation; n = 7–10/group). Adult PostC and PrePostC sheep had higher glucose area under the curve than Controls (P = 0.07 and P = 0.02, respectively), whereas PreC sheep were similar to Controls (P = 0.97). PostC and PrePostC had reduced first-phase insulin secretion compared with Control (P = 0.03 and P = 0.02, respectively). PreC was similar to Control (P = 0.12). Skeletal muscle SLC2A4 protein expression in PostC and PrePostC was increased 19%–58% in fetuses (P = 0.004), but decreased 39%–43% in adult sheep (P = 0.003) compared with Controls. Consistent with this, protein kinase C zeta (PKCζ) protein expression tended to be increased in fetal (P = 0.09) and reduced in adult (P = 0.07) offspring of all PCUN ewes compared with Controls. Maternal PCUN alters several aspects of offspring glucose homeostasis into adulthood. These findings suggest that maternal periconceptional nutrition has a lasting impact on metabolic homeostasis of the offspring.
Darwin's frogs Rhinoderma darwinii and Rhinoderma rufum are the only known species of amphibians in which males brood their offspring in their vocal sacs. We propose these frogs as flagship species for the conservation of the Austral temperate forests of Chile and Argentina. This recommendation forms part of the vision of the Binational Conservation Strategy for Darwin's Frogs, which was launched in 2018. The strategy is a conservation initiative led by the IUCN SSC Amphibian Specialist Group, which in 2017 convened 30 governmental, non-profit and private organizations from Chile, Argentina and elsewhere. Darwin's frogs are iconic examples of the global amphibian conservation crisis: R. rufum is categorized as Critically Endangered (Possibly Extinct) on the IUCN Red List, and R. darwinii as Endangered. Here we articulate the conservation planning process that led to the development of the conservation strategy for these species and present its main findings and recommendations. Using an evidence-based approach, the Binational Conservation Strategy for Darwin's Frogs contains a comprehensive status review of Rhinoderma spp., including critical threat analyses, and proposes 39 prioritized conservation actions. Its goal is that by 2028, key information gaps on Rhinoderma spp. will be filled, the main threats to these species will be reduced, and financial, legal and societal support will have been achieved. The strategy is a multi-disciplinary, transnational endeavour aimed at ensuring the long-term viability of these unique frogs and their particular habitat.
Little information exists on how to garner political commitment to strengthen large-scale breastfeeding policies and programmes by targeting key decision makers. The present study aims to map and describe the influence of stakeholders involved in breastfeeding policy and programming and identify opportunities to strengthen the breastfeeding-friendly environment in Mexico. A total of nine key informants from seventeen stakeholder organisations were selected based on their in-depth knowledge of the breastfeeding environment in Mexico and were individually interviewed using Net-Map methodology. This participatory interview technique combines stakeholder mapping, social network analysis and influence mapping to identify relevant stakeholders. Participants identified a total of fifty-five stakeholders shaping breastfeeding programmes and policies through four domains of influence: commands (n 32 stakeholders), dissemination (n 40), funding (n 35) and technical assistance (n 37). The Federal Ministry of Health emerged as the most influential stakeholder of breastfeeding policy and programming decisions in Mexico among all domains of influence. The Ministry of Finance and Public Credit as well as the National Institute of Public Health were identified as additional key stakeholders providing funding and technical assistance to the Federal Ministry of Health, respectively. Engaging identified key stakeholders can generate a multisectoral commitment to breastfeeding and strengthen the breastfeeding-friendly environment in Mexico.
We develop a model of the forces on a spherical particle suspended in flow through a curved duct under the assumption that the particle Reynolds number is small. This extends an asymptotic model of inertial lift force previously developed to study inertial migration in straight ducts. Of particular interest is the existence and location of stable equilibria within the cross-sectional plane towards which particles migrate. The Navier–Stokes equations determine the hydrodynamic forces acting on a particle. A leading-order model of the forces within the cross-sectional plane is obtained through the use of a rotating coordinate system and a perturbation expansion in the particle Reynolds number of the disturbance flow. We predict the behaviour of neutrally buoyant particles at low flow rates and examine the variation in focusing position with respect to particle size and bend radius, independent of the flow rate. In this regime, the lateral focusing position of particles approximately collapses with respect to a dimensionless parameter dependent on three length scales: specifically, the particle radius, duct height and duct bend radius. Additionally, a trapezoidal-shaped cross-section is considered in order to demonstrate how changes in the cross-section design influence the dynamics of particles.
Urbanisation and climate change are altering the pattern of California serogroup viruses in North America. As La Crosse virus (LACV) is the most pathogenic of the California serogroup, it is important to identify changes in distribution, transmission and pathogenesis. A scoping review (ScR) was prioritised to summarise the global evidence on LACV. A comprehensive search strategy was used, identified references were screened for relevance and relevant articles were characterised. Each step was conducted by two independent reviewers using pre-tested forms. Analysis identified areas of research saturation and gaps. The ScR included 481 research articles that were mostly journal articles (78.2%) conducted in North America (90.9%) from 1969 to 2016. Most evidence focused on epidemiology (44.9%), virus characteristics (25.8%), transmission conditions (18.7%) and pathogenesis of LACV in hosts (18.3%). Fewer studies evaluated the accuracy of diagnostic tests (8.7%), the efficacy of treatments (3.5%), prevention and control strategies (3.1%), the economic burden of infection (0.6%) and social impact (0.2%) of LACV. None of the literature predicted the impact of climate change on LACV, nor were any cases reported in Canada. These findings are intended to guide research to close knowledge gaps and inform evidence-based decisions surrounding activities for the prevention and control of LACV.
Complexes formed by straight chain, primary, aliphatic alcohols from methanol to n-decanol with Ca- and Na-montmorillonite from the liquid and vapour phases, have been investigated by X-ray techniques. Satisfactory complexes are formed more readily by the Ca-mineral and from the liquid phase rather than from the vapour phase. Molecular configurations of the adsorbed molecules are suggested consistent with the experimental data. The importance of cation-dipole interactions for the lower members of the series is stressed.
Adsorption isotherms for an homologous series of primary aliphatic alcohols from aqueous solution by montmorillonite and kaolinite saturated with either sodium or calcium ions have been determined. The results show that adsorption is a function of chain length and exchangeable cation in the case of the more insoluble alcohols. Exchangeable cation does not affect the adsorption of the soluble alcohols to any significant extent. Adsorption of the longer chain alcohols occurs in voids in the mineral aggregates.
Studies of the subsurface microbiology of the Äspö Hard Rock Laboratory, Sweden have revealed the presence of many different bacteria in the deep groundwaters which appear to maintain reducing conditions. Experiments were conducted to study the rock-water and microbial interactions. These used crushed Äspö diorite, Äspö groundwater and iron- and sulphate-reducing bacteria in flowing systems under anaerobic conditions. In column experiments, there was evidence of loss and mobilization of fine-grained crushed material (<5 μm) which had originally adhered to grain surfaces in the starting material. The mobilized fines were trapped between grains. The degree of mineralogical alteration was greater in the experiments when bacteria were present. In both column and continuously stirred reactor experiments, there is evidence for the formation of a secondary clay. These experiments have shown that microbial activity can influence rock-water interactions even in nutrient-poor conditions.
Organic molecules control calcite growth byadsorbing preferentiallyonto particular surfaces of the crystal. Adsorption of a monosaccharide (-galactose) on various calcite surfaces has been simulated with molecular dynamics. The calculations of Z-density, mean square displacement (MSD) and adsorption energyindicate that the adsorption of monosaccharide on the acute-stepped calcite (31.8) surface is more favourable than that on the obtuse-stepped (31.16) surface, which suggests that monosaccharides maybe able to selectivelycover some surfaces, inhibit crystal growth on these surfaces, and as a result shape the calcite crystals as seen in biominerals, e.g. coccoliths.
‘Hidden hunger’ is a term used to describe human deficiencies of key vitamins and minerals, also known as micronutrients. While global in scale, the prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies is particularly high in South Asia despite recent successes in economic growth, agricultural output and health care. The present paper reviews the most recent evidence on patterns and trends of hidden hunger across the region, with a focus on the most significant deficiencies – iodine, Fe, vitamin A and Zn – and interprets these in terms of health and economic consequences. The challenge for South Asian policy makers is to invest in actions that can cost-effectively resolve chronic nutrient gaps facing millions of households. Appropriate solutions are available today, so governments should build on evidence-based successes that combine targeted health system delivery of quality services with carefully designed multisector actions that help promote healthier diets, reduce poverty and ensure social protection simultaneously.
Pulsed non-thermal quiescent emission between 10 keV and around 150 keV has been observed in ~10 magnetars. For inner magnetospheric models of such hard X-ray signals, resonant Compton upscattering of soft thermal photons from the neutron star surface is the most efficient radiative process. We present angle-dependent hard X-ray upscattering model spectra for uncooled monoenergetic relativistic electrons. The spectral cut-off energies are critically dependent on the observer viewing angles and electron Lorentz factor. We find that electrons with energies less than around 15 MeV will emit most of their radiation below 250 keV, consistent with the observed turnovers in magnetar hard X-ray tails. Moreover, electrons of higher energy still emit most of the radiation below around 1 MeV, except for quasi-equatorial emission locales for select pulses phases. Our spectral computations use new state-of-the-art, spin-dependent formalism for the QED Compton scattering cross section in strong magnetic fields.
To: (i) determine the prevalence of self-reported eating less and eating down during early and late pregnancy and postpartum, and explore risk factors associated with eating less; (ii) examine the association between eating less and diet quality; and (iii) determine the association between eating less and weight gain during pregnancy.
Design
Data were collected longitudinally from a cohort of women participating in a community health programme. Diet was assessed at three time points (≤20 weeks’ gestation, 36 weeks’ gestation, 6 months’ postpartum), body weight was measured during study enrolment (≤20 weeks’ gestation) and at 36 weeks’ gestation, and information about the woman and her household was collected at enrolment.

The Rang-Din Nutrition Study in the Rangpur and Dinajpur districts of Bangladesh.

Results
The prevalence of self-reported eating less differed by time point (75·9 % in early pregnancy, 38·8 % in late pregnancy, 7·4 % postpartum; P<0·001). The most common reason for eating less across all time periods was food aversion or loss of appetite. Women who reported eating less in late pregnancy had consumed animal-source foods less frequently in the preceding week than women who reported eating more (mean (sd): 11·7 (7·4) v. 14·8 (9·2) times/week; P<0·001) and had lower weekly weight gain than women who reported eating more (mean (se): 0·27 (0·004) v. 0·33 (0·004) kg/week; P<0·001).
Conclusions
Eating less has negative implications with respect to diet quality and pregnancy weight gain in this context.
The perinatal environment has a major influence on long-term health and disease risk. Preterm birth alters early-life environment and is associated with altered metabolic function in adulthood. Whether preterm birth per se or the early nutritional interventions used to support growth in preterm infants underpins this association is unknown. Lambs born preterm, following dexamethasone induction of labour, or spontaneously at term were randomised to receive nutrient supplementation, analogous to the milk fortifier used clinically or water as a control for the first 2 weeks after birth. Thereafter, nutrition was not different between groups. Growth was monitored, and the glucose–insulin axis function was assessed in juvenile (4 months) and adult life (14 months). Early nutrition influenced adult metabolic function and body composition to a greater extent than preterm birth. In supplemented females, arginine-stimulated insulin secretion was increased in preterm but reduced in term-born juveniles compared with controls (repeated-measures ANOVA P<0·01). In supplemented preterm males, adult weight, ponderal index (PI) and fasting insulin concentrations were elevated compared with preterm controls (weight, 75 (sem 3) v. 69 (sem 2) kg; PI, 48·0 (sem 2·1) v. 43·7 (sem 1·7) kg/m3; fasting insulin, 0·19 (sem 0·02) v. 0·10 (sem 0·02) ng/ml). Conversely, supplemented term-born males had reduced adult weight, PI and fasting insulin concentrations compared with term-born controls (weight, 64 (sem 2) v. 70 (sem 2) kg; PI, 44·4 (sem 1·8) v. 48·2 (sem 1·7) kg/m3; fasting insulin, 0·09 (sem 0·02) v. 0·14 (sem 0·02) ng/ml; all group×supplement interactions P<0·05). Adult metabolic health may reflect both gestational age at birth and early nutrition. Human studies are urgently needed to investigate the adult sex-specific health implications of neonatal nutritional strategies.
