Risk factors that contribute to brain pathology and cognitive decline among older adults include demographic factors (e.g., age, educational attainment), genetic factors, health factors, and depression (Plassman et al., 2010). Variability within an individual’s performance across cognitive tasks is referred to as dispersion (Hultsch et al., 2002), which appears sensitive to subtle cognitive impairments associated with neurodegenerative pathology in older adults (Bangen et al., 2019; Kälin et al., 2014). Thaler and colleagues (2015) found that dispersion across domains of the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS) was a useful indicator of cognitive changes associated with cardiovascular disease and mortality. Also, research by Manning and colleagues (2021) found that elevated ratings of depression and anxiety in older adults was associated with greater dispersion across neuropsychological testing. The present study aimed to replicate findings that greater dispersion in neuropsychological performance is associated with impaired neurocognitive performance and greater self-reported depression among older adults who present for neuropsychological evaluation with cognitive concerns.
Participants and Methods:
Neuropsychological testing data was obtained from a university hospital. Chart reviews were conducted on 369 participants who met initial criteria (60 years or older with testing data from the RBANS Form A, Wechsler Test of Adult Reading, and Geriatric Depression Scale [GDS]). Retrospective analyses were conducted on a final sample of 293 participants from 60 to 94 years old (Mage = 74.41, SDage = 7.43; 179 females, 114 males). Diagnoses were used for group comparisons between cognitively intact individuals with subjective cognitive complaints (SCC, n = 49), persons with Mild Neurocognitive Disorder (mND, n =137), and persons with Major Neurocognitive Disorder (MND, n = 107).
Results:
As expected, results indicated that higher dispersion was related to lower Total RBANS Scores (r = -0.54, p < .001) and significant differences across diagnostic groupings (F(2, 289) = 29.19, p < 0.001; SCC, mND, MND) indicated that variability in performance was an indicator of greater neurocognitive impairment. Contrary to expectations, greater dispersion was very weakly associated with lower reported depressive symptomatology (r = -0.13, p = 0.03). A three-stage hierarchical linear regression was conducted with the RBANS Coefficient of Variation (CoV) as the dependent variable and three predictor variables (Age, Total RBANS, Total GDS). The regression analysis results indicated that age was not a significant predictor, but both Total RBANS and GDS Scores were. The most important predictor was Total RBANS Scores which uniquely explained 21% of the variation in dispersion.
Conclusions:
This study adds to the current literature regarding the clinical utility of dispersion in neuropsychological performance as an indicator of early and subtle neurocognitive impairment. Depressive symptom reporting was expected to help predict the degree of variability, but this factor was only weakly associated with the RBANS CoV.
Limitations of this study include its retrospective use of archival data and the restricted range on some variables of interest. Further research is needed to examine the relative utility of different measures of dispersion and why increased cognitive performance variability is related to neurocognitive impairment and decline.
Functional connectivity of the default mode network (DMN) during rest has been shown to be different among adults with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) relative to aged-matched individuals without MCI and is predictive of transition to dementia. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is also associated with aberrant connectivity of the DMN. Prior work from this group has demonstrated a higher rate of MCI and PTSD among World Trade Center (WTC) responders relative to the general population. The current study sought to investigate the main and interactive effects of MCI and PTSD on DMN functioning. Based on prior work, we hypothesized that MCI, but not PTSD, would predict aberrant connectivity in the DMN.
Participants and Methods:
99 WTC responders aged 44–65 stratified by MCI status (yes/no) and PTSD status (yes/no) and matched for age in years, sex (male vs. female), race (white, black, and other), and educational attainment (high school or less, some college / technical school, and university degree), and occupation on September 11, 2001 (law enforcement vs. other) underwent fMRI using a 3T Siemens Biograph MR scanner. A single 10-minute continuous functional MR sequence was acquired while participants were at rest with their eyes open. Group-level analyses were conducted using SPM-12, with correction for multiple comparisons using AFNI's 3dClustSim. Based on this threshold, the number of comparisons in our imaging volume, and the smoothness of our imaging data as measured by 3dFWHMx-acf, a minimum cluster size of 1134 voxels was required to have a corrected p . .05 with 2-sided thresholding. Spherical 3 mm seeds were placed in the dorsal (4, -50, 26) and ventral (4, -60, 46) posterior cingulate cortex (PCC).
Results:
Individuals with PTSD demonstrated significantly less connectivity of the dorsal posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) with medial insula (T = 5.21), subthalamic nucleus (T = 4.66), and postcentral gyrus (T = 3.81). There was no difference found in this study for connectivity between groups stratified by MCI status. There were no significant results for the ventral PCC seed.
Conclusions:
Contrary to hypotheses that were driven by a study of cortical thickness in WTC responders, the impact of PTSD appears to outweigh the impact of MCI on dorsal DMN connectivity among WTC responders stratified by PTSD and MCI status. This study is limited by several issues, including low number of female and minority participants, relatively small group cell sizes (n = 23–27 per cell), a brief resting state sequence (10 minutes), and lack of a non-WTC control group. Importantly, responders are a unique population so generalizability to other populations may be limited. Individuals in the current study are now being followed longitudinally to relate baseline resting state functional connectivity with cognitive changes and changes in connectivity over a four-year period.
We measured sex differences in emotion regulation (ER) abilities – relying on exercise of cognitive reappraisal – during an image rating task in adults over 55 years of age with varying degrees of depression symptom severity. We also collected a self-report measure on participants' views of their own ER capacities. Previous research by this group has demonstrated the importance of emotion processing in the context of sex and aging in depression. We hypothesized that females would (1) score higher on the Cognitive Reappraisal Facet of the ERQ, (2) be more successful in utilizing cognitive reappraisal skills in response to negative stimuli; and (3) have self-report scores on the ERQ that more closely match their success at cognitive reappraisal than would males.

Only the first of our three outcome measures was successfully predicted by the model including age, MADRS scores, and sex as predictors. Scores on the ERQ cognitive reappraisal facet with sex accounted for 11.3% of the variance (F=7.344, p=.009). Age and depression symptom severity did not reach significance. Performance on the ERT itself and the correlation between the two were not meaningfully modeled.
Conclusions:
Women showed both better cognitive reappraisal abilities overall and more insight into the level of those abilities, findings that fall in line with most ER literature. However, we found that females were also more likely than males to be skewed in the positive or “overconfident” direction; to overestimate those same abilities. This information is useful for clinicians interpreting self-report information in the emotion regulation domain. These findings may not generalize to a more diverse (racially and socioeconomically) population and given the cognitive nature of the reappraisal strategy; these results may not extend to a less educated population. These data will be useful to inform the interpretation of fMRI images from this same experiment.
In her book Memes in Digital Culture, Limor Shifman argues that while “memes are seemingly trivial and mundane artifacts, they actually reflect deep social and cultural structures.” The participatory culture ingrained within internet communities and the creation and dissemination of memes allows for an individual to seamlessly enter into the online political discourse, ingest the message and meaning within the meme, and then transform that signifying matrix into political action. Audiences can transfer that meme to another person, comment on one in a Twitter feed or online forum, replicate it or its message at a political rally, or embrace the ideology of the meme and put it into action at the voting booth. In the present world of new media, Shifman sees memes working in three interconnected ways: they can function as forms of persuasion or political advocacy; as grassroots action, where participants are empowered through the message of the meme to coordinate and organize online and also on the ground; and as modes of expression and public discussion. This essay is a focused venture into the intersected world of medievalismist Robin Hood and political meme culture of the nasty, malevolent, lulz variety from the 2000s and 2010s. I am especially interested with the ways in which authors and artists have corrupted the good outlaw Robin Hood and his ideology into something nefarious and degenerate. The Robin Hood memes that form the basis of this essay are those that reimagine Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama as versions of the outlaw, and these memes share several characteristics. Both Clinton and Obama are linked with communist iconography, and the two are portrayed as questionable capitalists. The adage “It's the economy, stupid” is not lost on these memeists, for they stoke the fear of an economy going under at the hands of Clinton and Obama, the former rendered as one whose corrupt family and foundation will use their political connections to bankroll their own interests, and the latter as a socialist in disguise who will expand the welfare state to the detriment of the free market and the benefit of “urban” (black, multicultural, multiethnic) communities.
Matching for causal inference is a well-studied problem, but standard methods fail when the units to match are text documents: the high-dimensional and rich nature of the data renders exact matching infeasible, causes propensity scores to produce incomparable matches, and makes assessing match quality difficult. In this paper, we characterize a framework for matching text documents that decomposes existing methods into (1) the choice of text representation and (2) the choice of distance metric. We investigate how different choices within this framework affect both the quantity and quality of matches identified through a systematic multifactor evaluation experiment using human subjects. Altogether, we evaluate over 100 unique text-matching methods along with 5 comparison methods taken from the literature. Our experimental results identify methods that generate matches with higher subjective match quality than current state-of-the-art techniques. We enhance the precision of these results by developing a predictive model to estimate the match quality of pairs of text documents as a function of our various distance scores. This model, which we find successfully mimics human judgment, also allows for approximate and unsupervised evaluation of new procedures in our context. We then employ the identified best method to illustrate the utility of text matching in two applications. First, we engage with a substantive debate in the study of media bias by using text matching to control for topic selection when comparing news articles from thirteen news sources. We then show how conditioning on text data leads to more precise causal inferences in an observational study examining the effects of a medical intervention.
In New York City, a multi-disciplinary Mass Casualty Consultation team is proposed to support prioritization of patients for coordinated inter-facility transfer after a large-scale mass casualty event. This study examines factors that influence consultation team prioritization decisions.
Methods:
As part of a multi-hospital functional exercise, 2 teams prioritized the same set of 69 patient profiles. Prioritization decisions were compared between teams. Agreement between teams was assessed based on patient profile demographics and injury severity. An investigator interviewed team leaders to determine reasons for discordant transfer decisions.
Results:
The 2 teams differed significantly in the total number of transfers recommended (49 vs 36; P = 0.003). However, there was substantial agreement when recommending transfer to burn centers, with 85.5% agreement and inter-rater reliability of 0.67 (confidence interval: 0.49–0.85). There was better agreement for patients with a higher acuity of injuries. Based on interviews, the most common reason for discordance was insider knowledge of the local community hospital and its capabilities.
Conclusions:
A multi-disciplinary Mass Casualty Consultation team was able to rapidly prioritize patients for coordinated secondary transfer using limited clinical information. Training for consultation teams should emphasize guidelines for transfer based on existing services at sending and receiving hospitals, as knowledge of local community hospital capabilities influence physician decision-making.
Violent protests are dramatic political events, yet we know little about the effect of these events on political behavior. While scholars typically treat violent protests as deliberate acts undertaken in pursuit of specific goals, due to a lack of appropriate data and difficulty in causal identification, there is scant evidence of whether riots can actually increase support for these goals. Using geocoded data, we analyze measures of policy support before and after the 1992 Los Angeles riot—one of the most high-profile events of political violence in recent American history—that occurred just prior to an election. Contrary to some expectations from the academic literature and the popular press, we find that the riot caused a marked liberal shift in policy support at the polls. Investigating the sources of this shift, we find that it was likely the result of increased mobilization of both African American and white voters. Remarkably, this mobilization endures over a decade later.
The way that we define and think about creativity today is rooted in a myriad of past theories and beliefs, dating back to ancient times. Over the years, our idea of creativity has gone from being the purview of the divine to a gift for a select few to a basic human characteristic. Modern creativity research has also evolved over time, from research primarily focusing on individual differences in creative ability to more dynamic and complex models of creativity, which focus on how personal and contextual factors interact to influence creativity across domains and at different levels. Changes in both the philosophy and science of creativity have reflected the concerns and visions of human agency and society that were dominant at a given time. This chapter explores how the philosophy and science of creativity have evolved over time within this socio-historical context.
Relationships with parents and peers are crucial for children's socialization, but how parent–child and peer relationships mutually affect each other is not well understood. Guided by spillover theory, we zoomed in on the bidirectional interplay between parental rejection and warmth on the one hand and peer victimization on the other, and examined whether children's maladjustment symptoms mediated hypothesized cross-domain spillover effects. Data stem from five waves of the longitudinal KiVa study among 9,770 children (50% boys; mean age = 9.16, standard deviation = 1.29). Results from random intercept cross-lagged panel models showed that higher parental rejection and lower parental warmth predicted increases in peer victimization and vice versa across waves, thus supporting the bidirectional model. Moreover, spillover from parent–child rejection and warmth to peer victimization was partially driven by children's depressive symptoms and bullying perpetration. Vice versa, spillover from peer victimization to parent–child rejection and warmth was partially driven by children's social anxiety, depressive symptoms, conduct problems, and bullying perpetration. Thus, children might get caught in persistent problems in two important social domains, and these two domains influence each other through children's maladjustment. Family and school interventions should be integrated to prevent a downwards spiral.
