Isolated multi-MeV $\gamma$-rays with attosecond duration, high collimation and beam angular momentum (BAM) may find many interesting applications in nuclear physics, astrophysics, etc. Here, we propose a scheme to generate such $\gamma$-rays via nonlinear Thomson scattering of a rotating relativistic electron sheet driven by a few-cycle twisted laser pulse interacting with a micro-droplet target. Our model clarifies the laser intensity threshold and carrier-envelope phase effect on the generation of the isolated electron sheet. Three-dimensional numerical simulations demonstrate the $\gamma$-ray emission with 320 attoseconds duration and peak brilliance of $9.3\times 10^{24}$ photons s${}^{-1}$ mrad${}^{-2}$ mm${}^{-2}$ per 0.1$\%$ bandwidth at 4.3 MeV. The $\gamma$-ray beam carries a large BAM of $2.8 \times 10^{16}\mathrm{\hslash}$, which arises from the efficient BAM transfer from the rotating electron sheet, subsequently leading to a unique angular distribution. This work should promote the experimental investigation of nonlinear Thomson scattering of rotating electron sheets in large laser facilities.

The elasto-inertial focusing and rotating characteristics of spheroids in a square channel flow of Oldroyd-B viscoelastic fluids are studied by the direct forcing/fictitious domain method. The rotational behaviours, changes in the equilibrium positions and travel distances are explored to analyse the mechanisms of spheroid migration in viscoelastic fluids. Within the present simulated parameters (1 ≤ Re ≤ 100, 0 ≤ Wi ≤ 2, 0.4 ≤ α ≤3), the results show that there are four kinds of equilibrium positions and six (five) kinds of rotational behaviours for the elasto-inertial migration of prolate (oblate) spheroids. We are the first to identify a new rotational mode for the migration of prolate spheroids. Only when the particles are initially located at a corner and wall bisector, some special initial orientations of the spheroids have an impact on the final equilibrium position and rotational mode. In other general initial positions, the initial orientation of the spheroid has a negligible effect. A higher Weissenberg number means the faster the particles migrate to the equilibrium position. The spheroid gradually changes from the corner (CO), channel centreline (CC), diagonal line (DL) and cross-section midline (CSM) equilibrium positions as the elastic number decreases, depending on the aspect ratio, initial orientation and rotational behaviour of the particles and the elastic number of the fluid. When the elastic number is less than the critical value, the types of rotational modes of the spheroids are reduced. By controlling the elastic number near the critical value, spheroids with different aspect ratios can be efficiently separated.

Helicity plays a key role in the evolution of vortex structures and turbulent dynamics. The helicity dynamics and vortex structures in streamwise-rotating channel turbulence are discussed in this paper using the helicity budget equation and the differentiated second-order structure function equation of helicity. Generally, rotation and Reynolds numbers exhibit opposing effects on the interscale helicity dynamics and the vortices. Under the buffer layer, the positions of the helicity peaks are proportional to the ratio between the Reynolds and rotation numbers. The mechanism is related to the opposing effects of convection and rotation. Rotation directly affects the helicity balance through the Coriolis term and corresponding pressure term. In the buffer layer, the scale helicity is negative at small scales but positive at large scales, which is mainly induced by the spatial effects (the production and the spatial turbulent convection) but reduced by interscale cascades. Examination of structures reveals the close association between scale helicity and streaks, with streak lift angles exhibiting an increase with rotation and a decrease with Reynolds numbers. In the log-law layer, the Coriolis terms and corresponding pressure terms are proportional to the rotation numbers but remain independent of the Reynolds numbers. The negative scale helicity is forward cascaded towards small scales. Generally, spanwise vortices in the log-law layer are related to sweep events and forward cascades. Our findings indicate that these spanwise vortices are suppressed by rotation but recover with increasing Reynolds numbers, aligning with the effects observed in the scale helicity balance.

In this paper the multiscale dynamics of streamwise-rotating channel turbulence is studied through direct numerical simulations. Using the generalized Kolmogorov equation, we find that as rotation becomes stronger, the turbulence in the buffer layer is obviously reduced by the intense spatial turbulent convection. On the contrary, in other layers, the turbulence is strengthened mainly by the modified production peak, the intense spatial turbulent convection and the suppressed forward energy cascades. It is also discovered that under a system rotation, small- and large-scale inclined structures have different angles with the streamwise direction, and the difference is strengthened with increasing rotation rates. The multiscale inclined structures are further confirmed quantitatively through a newly defined angle based on the velocity vector. Through the budget balance of Reynolds stresses and the hairpin vortex model, it is discovered that the Coriolis force and the pressure–velocity correlation are responsible for sustaining the inclined structures. The Coriolis force directly decreases the inclination angles but indirectly induces inclined structures in a more predominant way. The pressure–velocity correlation term is related to the strain rate tensor. Finally, the anisotropic generalized Kolmogorov equation is used to validate the above findings and reveals that the multiscale behaviours of the inclined structures are mainly induced by the mean spanwise velocity gradients.

Aging plays a crucial role in the mechanisms of the impacts of genetic and environmental factors on blood pressure and serum lipids. However, to our knowledge, how the influence of genetic and environmental factors on the correlation between blood pressure and serum lipids changes with age remains to be determined. In this study, data from the Chinese National Twin Registry (CNTR) were used. Resting blood pressure, including systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP and DBP), and fasting serum lipids, including total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and triglycerides (TGs) were measured in 2378 participants (1189 twin pairs). Univariate and bivariate structural equation models examined the genetic and environmental influences on blood pressure and serum lipids among three age groups. All phenotypes showed moderate to high heritability (0.37–0.59) and moderate unique environmental variance (0.30–0.44). The heritability of all phenotypes showed a decreasing trend with age. Among all phenotypes, SBP and DBP showed a significant monotonic decreasing trend. For phenotype-phenotype pairs, the phenotypic correlation (Rph) of each pair ranged from −0.04 to 0.23, and the additive genetic correlation (Ra) ranged from 0.00 to 0.36. For TC&SBP, TC&DBP, TG&SBP and TGs&DBP, both the Rph and Ra declined with age, and the Ra difference between the young group and the older adult group is statistically significant (p < .05). The unique environmental correlation (Re) of each pair did not follow any pattern with age and remained relatively stable with age. In summary, we observed that the heritability of blood pressure was affected by age. Moreover, blood pressure and serum lipids shared common genetic backgrounds, and age had an impact on the phenotypic correlation and genetic correlations.

Aphids exhibit seasonally alternating asexual and sexual reproductive modes. Different morphs are produced throughout the life cycle. To evaluate morph-specific fitness during reproductive switching, holocyclic Sitobion avenae were induced continuously under short light conditions, and development and reproduction were compared in each morph. Seven morphs, including apterous and alate virginoparae, apterous and alate sexuparae, oviparae, males, and fundatrices, were produced during the life cycle. The greatest proportions of sexuparae, oviparae, males, and virginoparae were in the G1, G2, G3, and G4 generations, respectively. Regardless of asexual or sexual morphs, alate morphs exhibited a marked delay in age at maturity compared with that of apterous morphs. Among the alate morphs, males had the longest age at maturity, followed by sexuparae and virginoparae. Among the apterous morphs, sexuparae were older at maturity than the fundatrices, virginoparae, and oviparae. The nymphs of each morph had equal survival potentials. For the same wing morphs, apterous sexuparae and oviparae exhibited substantial delays in the pre-reproductive period and considerable reductions in fecundity, compared with those of apterous virginoparae and fundatrices, whereas alate sexuparae and alate virginoparae had similar fecundity. The seven morphs exhibited Deevey I survivorship throughout the life cycle. These results suggest that sexual production, particularly in males, has short-term development and reproduction costs. The coexistence of sexual and asexual morphs in sexuparae offspring may be regarded as an adaptive strategy for limiting the risk of low fitness in winter.

Relativistic few-cycle mid-infrared (mid-IR) pulses are unique tools for strong-field physics and ultrafast science, but are difficult to generate with traditional nonlinear optical methods. Here, we propose a scheme to generate such pulses with high efficiency via plasma-based frequency modulation with a negatively chirped laser pulse (NCLP). The NCLP is rapidly compressed longitudinally due to dispersion and plasma etching, and its central frequency is downshifted via photon deceleration due to the enhanced laser intensity and plasma density modulations. Simulation results show that few-cycle mid-IR pulses with the maximum center wavelength of $7.9\;\unicode{x3bc} \mathrm{m}$ and pulse intensity of ${a}_{\mathrm{MIR}}=2.9$ can be generated under a proper chirp parameter. Further, the maximum energy conversion efficiency can approach 5.0%. Such a relativistic mid-IR source is promising for a wide range of applications.

The purpose of this study was to analyse the clinical characteristics of patients with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-COV-2) PCR re-positivity after recovering from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Patients (n = 1391) from Guangzhou, China, who had recovered from COVID-19 were recruited between 7 September 2021 and 11 March 2022. Data on epidemiology, symptoms, laboratory test results and treatment were analysed. In this study, 42.7% of recovered patients had re-positive result. Most re-positive patients were asymptomatic, did not have severe comorbidities, and were not contagious. The re-positivity rate was 39%, 46%, 11% and 25% in patients who had received inactivated, mRNA, adenovirus vector and recombinant subunit vaccines, respectively. Seven independent risk factors for testing re-positive were identified, and a predictive model was constructed using these variables. The predictors of re-positivity were COVID-19 vaccination status, previous SARs-CoV-12 infection prior to the most recent episode, renal function, SARS-CoV-2 IgG and IgM antibody levels and white blood cell count. The predictive model could benefit the control of the spread of COVID-19.

Wireless capsule endoscopes (WCEs) are pill-sized camera-embedded devices that can provide visualization of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract by capturing and transmitting images to an external receiver. Determination of the exact location of the WCE is crucial for the accurate navigation of the WCE through external guidance, tracking of the GI abnormality, and the treatment of the detected disease. Despite the enormous progress in the real-time tracking of the WCE, a well-calibrated analytical model is still missing for the accurate localization of WCEs by the measurements from different onboard sensing units. In this paper, a well-calibrated analytical model for the magnetic localization of the WCE was established by optimizing the magnetic moment in the magnetic dipole model. The Jacobian-based iterative method was employed to solve the position of the WCE. An error model was established and experimentally verified for the analysis and prediction of the localization errors caused by inaccurate measurements from the magnetic field sensor. The assessment of the real-time localization of the WCE was performed via experimental trials using an external permanent magnet (EPM) mounted on a robotic manipulator and a WCE equipped with a 3-axis magnetic field sensor and an inertial measurement unit (IMU). The localization errors were measured under different translational and rotational motion modes and working spaces. The results showed that the selection of workspace (distance relative to the EPM) could lead to different positioning errors. The proposed magnetic localization method holds great potential for the real-time localization of WCEs when performing complex motions during GI diagnosis.

Instrument delivery is critical part in vascular intervention surgery. Due to the soft-body structure of instruments, the relationship between manipulation commands and instrument motion is non-linear, making instrument delivery challenging and time-consuming. Reinforcement learning has the potential to learn manipulation skills and automate instrument delivery with enhanced success rates and reduced workload of physicians. However, due to the sample inefficiency when using high-dimensional images, existing reinforcement learning algorithms are limited on realistic vascular robotic systems. To alleviate this problem, this paper proposes discrete soft actor-critic with auto-encoder (DSAC-AE) that augments SAC-discrete with an auxiliary reconstruction task. The algorithm is applied with distributed sample collection and parameter update in a robot-assisted preclinical environment. Experimental results indicate that guidewire delivery can be automatically implemented after 50k sampling steps in less than 15 h, demonstrating the proposed algorithm has the great potential to learn manipulation skill for vascular robotic systems.

Previous studies have reported inconsistent associations between low-carbohydrate diets (LCD) and plasma lipid profile. Also, there is little evidence on the role of the quality and food sources of macronutrients in LCD in cardiometabolic health. We investigated the cross-sectional associations between LCD and plasma cardiometabolic risk markers in a nationwide representative sample of the US population. Diet was measured through two 24-h recalls. Overall, healthy (emphasising unsaturated fat, plant protein and less low-quality carbohydrates) and unhealthy (emphasising saturated fat, animal protein and less high-quality carbohydrate) LCD scores were developed according to the percentage of energy as total and subtypes of carbohydrate, protein and fat. Linear regression was used to estimate the percentage difference of plasma marker concentrations by LCD scores. A total of 34 785 participants aged 18–85 years were included. After adjusting for covariates including BMI, healthy LCD was associated with lower levels of insulin, homoeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), C-reactive protein (CRP) and TAG, and higher levels of HDL-cholesterol, with the percentage differences (comparing extreme quartile of LCD score) of −5·91, −6·16, −9·13, −9·71 and 7·60 (all P trend < 0·001), respectively. Conversely, unhealthy LCD was associated with higher levels of insulin, HOMA-IR, CRP and LDL-cholesterol (all P trend < 0·001). Our results suggest that healthy LCD may have positive, whereas unhealthy LCD may have negative impacts on CRP and metabolic and lipid profiles. These findings underscore the need to carefully consider the quality and subtypes of macronutrients in future LCD studies.

A quasi-dynamic subgrid-scale (SGS) kinetic energy one-equation eddy-viscosity model is introduced in this paper for large-eddy simulation (LES) of compressible flows. With the additional SGS kinetic energy equation, the SGS kinetic energy can be predicted properly. Then, using the dual constraints of SGS kinetic energy and the SGS kinetic energy flux, the eddy-viscosity model can be determined exactly. Taking a similar scheme as the expansion of the SGS stress, other unclosed quantities in the equations to be solved could be well modelled separately. Therefore, with the advance of the equations, all the model coefficients can be determined dynamically. Differing from the classic dynamic procedure, the new methodology needs no test filtering, and thus it could also be called a quasi-dynamic procedure. Using direct numerical simulation of compressible turbulent channel flow, the $a$ $priori$ test shows that the key modelled quantities of the suggested model display high correlations with the real values. In LES of compressible turbulent channel flows of the Mach number being $1.5$ and 3.0, the proposed model can precisely predict some important quantities, including the mean velocity, Reynolds stress and turbulent flux, and it can also supply more abundant turbulent structures. For the compressible flat-plate boundary layer, the new model can correctly predict the transition process, mean velocity and turbulence intensities in the turbulent region. The results show that the proposed model has the advantage of scale adaptivity. Finally, the new model is applied to LES of turbulent mixing in spherical converging Richtmyer–Meshkov instability, and the accurate results show that the new model has a good ability for LES of complex fluids.

Helical rotating turbulence is a chiral and anisotropic flow. The energy and helicity transfers of helical rotating turbulence are studied in this paper. First, we discuss the antisymmetry and conservation of energy and helicity transfers. There are three expressions for helicity transfers due to the commutability of differential operators. The first expression is derived here. The second expression violates antisymmetry, and the third one introduces non-physical effects. The relations of these expressions are discussed in detail, including those about the sum of all triads and partial triads, as well as those about helical wave decomposition. Through direct numerical simulations, we find that helicity can reduce inverse energy cascades. The inhibition is mainly associated with transhelical energy fluxes and the interactions of two-dimensional modes. The inverse cascades of decomposed energy fluxes are related to the two-dimensionalization. For helicity, rotation does not affect the total helicity flux but generally suppresses the decomposed helicity fluxes. Positive homochiral and negative heterochiral helicity fluxes are associated with corresponding positive anisotropic transfers. Notably, the transhelical helicity fluxes increase the amplitudes of both positive and negative helicity, which is related to the chirality polarization.

Pregnancy is a complex biological process. The establishment and maintenance of foetal–maternal interface are pivotal events. Decidual immune cells and inflammatory cytokines play indispensable roles in the foetal–maternal interface. The disfunction of decidual immune cells leads to adverse pregnancy outcome. Tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α, a common inflammatory cytokine, has critical roles in different stages of normal pregnancy process. However, the relationship between the disorder of TNF-α and adverse pregnancy outcomes, including preeclampsia (PE), intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), spontaneous abortion (SA), preterm birth and so on, is still indefinite. In this review, we thoroughly reviewed the effect of TNF-α disorder on pathological conditions. Moreover, we summarized the reports about the adverse pregnancy outcomes (PE, IUGR, SA and preterm birth) of using anti-TNF-α drugs (infliximab, etanercept and adalimumab, certolizumab and golimumab) currently in the clinical studies. Overall, IUGR, SA and preterm birth are the most common adverse pregnancy outcomes of anti-TNF-α drugs. Our review may provide insight for the immunological treatment of pregnancy-related complication, and help practitioners make informed decisions based on the current evidences.

Helicity is a quadratic inviscid conservative quantity in three-dimensional turbulent flows and is crucial for turbulent system evolution. Helicity effects have mainly been highlighted over the past few decades to explore the intrinsic mechanism of turbulent flows, while the statistical characteristics of helicity itself are nearly absent in general anisotropic turbulent flows. In this paper, we investigate the helicity statistics in turbulent channel flows with streamwise rotation at moderate rotation numbers ($Ro_{\tau }=7.5,15$ and 30) and Reynolds numbers ($Re_{\tau }=180$ and 395), including their spatial and scale distributions, anisotropy and cross-scale transfer. The appearance of a mean secondary flow in the spanwise direction corresponds to a mean streamwise vorticity, which indicates the presence of a high-helicity distribution. Numerical results reveal a regular helicity profile along the wall-normal direction, and a new peak is found in the near-wall region around $y^+=6$ of the streamwise or spanwise helicity profiles. The inter-scale helicity transfer is analysed by the filtering method, and the numerical consequences reveal that the second channel of the helicity cascade we proposed previously is dominant in contrast to the first channel. The rotation effects are explored by comparing the numerical results obtained under different rotation numbers. With increasing rotation number, more helical structures in the near-wall regions are present, with peaks of helicity profiles and fluxes coming closer to the wall. With a higher Reynolds number, their amplitudes are larger and scale-space transfer is strengthened. These systematic numerical analyses uncover the helicity distributions and transfer in wall-bounded turbulent flows.

Hyperinsulinaemia and insulin resistance have been proposed to be associated with mortality risk, and diet can modulate insulin response. However, whether dietary patterns with high insulinaemic potential are associated with mortality remains unknown. We prospectively examined the associations between hyperinsulinaemic diets and the risk of total and cause-specific mortality in a large nationally representative population. Dietary factors were assessed by 24-h recalls. Two empirical dietary indices for hyperinsulinaemia (EDIH) and insulin resistance (EDIR) were developed to identify food groups most predictive of biomarkers for hyperinsulinaemia (C-peptide and insulin) and insulin resistance (homoeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance), respectively. Deaths from date of the first dietary interview until 31 December 2015 were identified by the National Death Index. Multivariable hazard ratios (HR) and 95 % CI were calculated using Cox regression models. During a median follow-up of 7·8 years, 4904 deaths were documented among 40 074 participants. For EDIH, the multivariable-adjusted HR (comparing extreme quintiles) were 1·20 (95 % CI 1·09, 1·32, P-trend<0·001) for overall mortality and 1·41 (95 % CI 1·15, 1·74, P-trend = 0·002) for CVD mortality. Similar associations were observed for EDIR with HR of 1·18 (95 % CI 1·07, 1·29, P-trend < 0·001) for total and 1·35 (95 % CI 1·09, 1·67, P-trend = 0·005) for CVD mortality. After further adjustments for BMI and diabetes, these positive associations were somewhat attenuated. Our findings suggested that diets with higher insulinaemic potential are associated with increased risk of overall and CVD-specific mortality.

Schistosomiasis has been subjected to extensive control efforts in the People's Republic of China (China) which aims to eliminate the disease by 2030. We describe baseline results of a longitudinal cohort study undertaken in the Dongting and Poyang lakes areas of central China designed to determine the prevalence of Schistosoma japonicum in humans, animals (goats and bovines) and Oncomelania snails utilizing molecular diagnostics procedures. Data from the Chinese National Schistosomiasis Control Programme (CNSCP) were compared with the molecular results obtained.

Sixteen villages from Hunan and Jiangxi provinces were surveyed; animals were only found in Hunan. The prevalence of schistosomiasis in humans was 1.8% in Jiangxi and 8.0% in Hunan determined by real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR), while 18.3% of animals were positive by digital droplet PCR. The CNSCP data indicated that all villages harboured S. japonicum-infected individuals, detected serologically by indirect haemagglutination assay (IHA), but very few, if any, of these were subsequently positive by Kato-Katz (KK).

Based on the outcome of the IHA and KK results, the CNSCP incorporates targeted human praziquantel chemotherapy but this approach can miss some infections as evidenced by the results reported here. Sensitive molecular diagnostics can play a key role in the elimination of schistosomiasis in China and inform control measures allowing for a more systematic approach to treatment.
