We investigate the momentum fluxes between a turbulent air boundary layer and a growing–breaking wave field by solving the air–water two-phase Navier–Stokes equations through direct numerical simulations. A fully developed turbulent airflow drives the growth of a narrowbanded wave field, whose amplitude increases until reaching breaking conditions. The breaking events result in a loss of wave energy, transferred to the water column, followed by renewed growth under wind forcing. We revisit the momentum flux analysis in a high-wind-speed regime, characterized by the ratio of the friction velocity to wave speed $u_\ast /c$ in the range $[0.3\,{-}\,0.9]$, through the lens of growing–breaking cycles. The total momentum flux across the interface is dominated by pressure, which increases with $u_\ast /c$ during growth and reduces sharply during breaking. Drag reduction during breaking is linked to airflow separation, a sudden acceleration of the flow, an upward shift of the mean streamwise velocity profile and a reduction in Reynolds shear stress. We characterize the reduction of pressure stress and flow acceleration through an aerodynamic drag coefficient by splitting the analysis between growing and breaking stages, treating them as separate subprocesses. While drag increases with $u_\ast /c$ during growth, it decreases during breaking. Averaging over both stages leads to a saturation of the drag coefficient at high $u_\ast /c$, comparable to what is observed at high wind speeds in laboratory and field conditions. Our analysis suggests that this saturation is controlled by breaking dynamics.

We describe the rising trajectory of bubbles in isotropic turbulence and quantify the slowdown of the mean rise velocity of bubbles with sizes within the inertial subrange. We perform direct numerical simulations of bubbles, for a wide range of turbulence intensity, bubble inertia and deformability, with systematic comparison with the corresponding quiescent case, with Reynolds number at the Taylor microscale from 38 to 77. Turbulent fluctuations randomise the rising trajectory and cause a reduction of the mean rise velocity $\tilde {w}_b$ compared with the rise velocity in quiescent flow $w_b$. The decrease in mean rise velocity of bubbles $\tilde {w}_b/w_b$ is shown to be primarily a function of the ratio of the turbulence intensity and the buoyancy forces, described by the Froude number $Fr=u'/\sqrt {gd}$, where $u'$ is the root-mean-square velocity fluctuations, $g$ is gravity and $d$ is the bubble diameter. The bubble inertia, characterised by the ratio of inertial to viscous forces (Galileo number), and the bubble deformability, characterised by the ratio of buoyancy forces to surface tension (Bond number), modulate the rise trajectory and velocity in quiescent fluid. The slowdown of these bubbles in the inertial subrange is not due to preferential sampling, as is the case with sub-Kolmogorov bubbles. Instead, it is caused by the nonlinear drag–velocity relationship, where velocity fluctuations lead to an increased average drag. For $Fr > 0.5$, we confirm the scaling $\tilde {w}_b / w_b \propto 1 / Fr$, as proposed previously by Ruth et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 924, 2021, p. A2), over a wide range of bubble inertia and deformability.

Thin-film equations are utilised in many different areas of fluid dynamics when there exists a direction in which the aspect ratio can be considered small. We consider thin free films with Marangoni effects in the extensional flow regime, where velocity gradients occur predominantly along the film. In practice, because of the local deposition of surfactants or input of energy, asymmetric distributions of surfactants or surface tension more generally, are possible. Such examples include the surface of bubbles and the rupture of thin films. In this study, we consider the asymmetric thin-film equations for extensional flow with Marangoni effects. Concentrating on the case of small Reynolds number $ Re $, we study the deposition of insoluble surfactants on one side of a liquid sheet otherwise at rest and the resulting thinning and rupture of the sheet. The analogous problem with a uniformly thinning liquid sheet is also considered. In addition, the centreline deformation is discussed. In particular, we show analytically that if the surface tension isotherm $\sigma = \sigma (\varGamma )$ is nonlinear (surface tension $\sigma$ varies with surfactant concentration $\varGamma$), then accounting for top–bottom asymmetry leads to slower (faster) thinning and pinching if $\sigma = \sigma (\varGamma )$ is convex (concave). The analytical progress reported in this paper allows us to discuss the production of satellite drops from rupture via Marangoni effects, which, if relevant to surface bubbles, would be an aerosol production mechanism that is distinct from jet drops and film drops.

We investigate drop break-up morphology, occurrence, time and size distribution, through large ensembles of high-fidelity direct-numerical simulations of drops in homogeneous isotropic turbulence, spanning a wide range of parameters in terms of the Weber number $We$, viscosity ratio between the drop and the carrier flow $\mu _r=\mu _d/\mu _l$, where d is the drop diameter, and Reynolds ($Re$) number. For $\mu _r \leq 20$, we find a nearly constant critical $We$, while it increases with $\mu _r$ (and $Re$) when $\mu _r > 20$, and the transition can be described in terms of a drop Reynolds number. The break-up time is delayed when $\mu _r$ increases and is a function of distance to criticality. The first break-up child-size distributions for $\mu _r \leq 20$ transition from M to U shape when the distance to criticality is increased. At high $\mu _r$, the shape of the distribution is modified. The first break-up child-size distribution gives only limited information on the fragmentation dynamics, as the subsequent break-up sequence is controlled by the drop geometry and viscosity. At high $We$, a $d^{-3/2}$ size distribution is observed for $\mu _r \leq 20$, which can be explained by capillary-driven processes, while for $\mu _r > 20$, almost all drops formed by the fragmentation process are at the smallest scale, controlled by the diameter of the very extended filament, which exhibits a snake-like shape prior to break-up.

The statistics of breaking wave fields are characterised within a novel multi-layer framework, which generalises the single-layer Saint-Venant system into a multi-layer and non-hydrostatic formulation of the Navier–Stokes equations. We simulate an ensemble of phase-resolved surface wave fields in physical space, where strong nonlinearities, including directional wave breaking and the subsequent highly rotational flow motion, are modelled, without surface overturning. We extract the kinematics of wave breaking by identifying breaking fronts and their speed, for freely evolving wave fields initialised with typical wind wave spectra. The $\varLambda (c)$ distribution, defined as the length of breaking fronts (per unit area) moving with speed $c$ to $c+{\rm d}c$ following Phillips (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 156, 1985, pp. 505–531), is reported for a broad range of conditions. We recover the $\varLambda (c) \propto c^{-6}$ scaling without wind forcing for sufficiently steep wave fields. A scaling of $\varLambda (c)$ based solely on the root-mean-square slope and peak wave phase speed is shown to describe the modelled breaking distributions well. The modelled breaking distributions are in good agreement with field measurements and the proposed scaling can be applied successfully to the observational data sets. The present work paves the way for simulations of the turbulent upper ocean directly coupled to a realistic breaking wave dynamics, including Langmuir turbulence, and other sub-mesoscale processes.

We perform direct numerical simulations of a gas bubble dissolving in a surrounding liquid. The bubble volume is reduced due to dissolution of the gas, with the numerical implementation of an immersed boundary method, coupling the gas diffusion and the Navier–Stokes equations. The methods are validated against planar and spherical geometries’ analytical moving boundary problems, including the classic Epstein–Plesset problem. Considering a bubble rising in a quiescent liquid, we show that the mass transfer coefficient $k_L$ can be described by the classic Levich formula $k_L = (2/\sqrt {{\rm \pi} })\sqrt {\mathscr {D}_l\,U(t)/d(t)}$, with $d(t)$ and $U(t)$ the time-varying bubble size and rise velocity, and $\mathscr {D}_l$ the gas diffusivity in the liquid. Next, we investigate the dissolution and gas transfer of a bubble in homogeneous and isotropic turbulence flow, extending Farsoiya et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 920, 2021, A34). We show that with a bubble size initially within the turbulent inertial subrange, the mass transfer coefficient in turbulence $k_L$ is controlled by the smallest scales of the flow, the Kolmogorov $\eta$ and Batchelor $\eta _B$ microscales, and is independent of the bubble size. This leads to the non-dimensional transfer rate ${Sh}=k_L L^\star /\mathscr {D}_l$ scaling as ${Sh}/{Sc}^{1/2} \propto {Re}^{3/4}$, where ${Re}$ is the macroscale Reynolds number ${Re} = u_{rms}L^\star /\nu _l$, with $u_{rms}$ the velocity fluctuations, $L^*$ the integral length scale, $\nu _l$ the liquid viscosity, and ${Sc}=\nu _l/\mathscr {D}_l$ the Schmidt number. This scaling can be expressed in terms of the turbulence dissipation rate $\epsilon$ as ${k_L}\propto {Sc}^{-1/2} (\epsilon \nu _l)^{1/4}$, in agreement with the model proposed by Lamont & Scott (AIChE J., vol. 16, issue 4, 1970, pp. 513–519) and corresponding to the high $Re$ regime from Theofanous et al. (Intl J. Heat Mass Transfer, vol. 19, issue 6, 1976, pp. 613–624).

We present experiments on large air cavities spanning a wide range of sizes relative to the Hinze scale $d_{H}$, the scale at which turbulent stresses are balanced by surface tension, disintegrating in turbulence. For cavities with initial sizes $d_0$ much larger than $d_{H}$ (probing up to $d_0/d_{H} = 8.3$), the size distribution of bubbles smaller than $d_{H}$ follows $N(d) \propto d^{-3/2}$, with $d$ the bubble diameter. The capillary instability of ligaments involved in the deformation of the large bubbles is shown visually to be responsible for the creation of the small bubbles. Turning to dynamical, three-dimensional measurements of individual break-up events, we describe the break-up child size distribution and the number of child bubbles formed as a function of $d_0/d_{H}$. Then, to model the evolution of a population of bubbles produced by turbulent bubble break-up, we propose a population balance framework in which break-up involves two physical processes: an inertial deformation to the parent bubble that sets the size of large child bubbles, and a capillary instability that sets the size of small child bubbles. A Monte Carlo approach is used to construct the child size distribution, with simulated stochastic break-ups constrained by our experimental measurements and the understanding of the role of capillarity in small bubble production. This approach reproduces the experimental time evolution of the bubble size distribution during the disintegration of large air cavities in turbulence.

We investigate wind wave growth by direct numerical simulations solving for the two-phase Navier–Stokes equations. We consider the ratio of the wave speed $c$ to the wind friction velocity $u_*$ from $c/u_*= 2$ to 8, i.e. in the slow to intermediate wave regime; and initial wave steepness $ak$ from 0.1 to 0.3; the two being varied independently. The turbulent wind and the travelling, nearly monochromatic waves are fully coupled without any subgrid-scale models. The wall friction Reynolds number is 720. The novel fully coupled approach captures the simultaneous evolution of the wave amplitude and shape, together with the underwater boundary layer (drift current), up to wave breaking. The wave energy growth computed from the time-dependent surface elevation is in quantitative agreement with that computed from the surface pressure distribution, which confirms the leading role of the pressure forcing for finite amplitude gravity waves. The phase shift and the amplitude of the principal mode of surface pressure distribution are systematically reported, to provide direct evidence for possible wind wave growth theories. Intermittent and localised airflow separation is observed for steep waves with small wave age, but its effect on setting the phase-averaged pressure distribution is not drastically different from that of non-separated sheltering. We find that the wave form drag force is not a strong function of wave age but closely related to wave steepness. In addition, the history of wind wave coupling can affect the wave form drag, due to the wave crest shape and other complex coupling effects. The normalised wave growth rate we obtain agrees with previous studies. We make an effort to clarify various commonly adopted underlying assumptions, and to reconcile the scattering of the data between different previous theoretical, numerical and experimental results, as we revisit this longstanding problem with new numerical evidence.

We investigate how turbulence in liquid affects the rising speed of gas bubbles within the inertial range. Experimentally, we employ stereoscopic tracking of bubbles rising through water turbulence created by the convergence of turbulent jets and characterized with particle image velocimetry performed throughout the measurement volume. We use the spatially varying, time-averaged mean water velocity field to consider the physically relevant bubble slip velocity relative to the mean flow. Over a range of bubble sizes within the inertial range, we find that the bubble mean rise velocity $\left \langle v_z \right \rangle$ decreases with the intensity of the turbulence as characterized by its root-mean-square fluctuation velocity, $u'$. Non-dimensionalized by the quiescent rise velocity $v_{q}$, the average rise speed follows $\left \langle v_z \right \rangle /v_{q}\propto 1/{\textit {Fr}}$ at high ${\textit {Fr}}$, where ${\textit {Fr}}=u'/\sqrt {dg}$ is a Froude number comparing the intensity of the turbulence to the bubble buoyancy, with $d$ the bubble diameter and $g$ the acceleration due to gravity. We complement these results by performing numerical integration of the Maxey–Riley equation for a point bubble experiencing nonlinear drag in three-dimensional, homogeneous and isotropic turbulence. These simulations reproduce the slowdown observed experimentally, and show that the mean magnitude of the slip velocity is proportional to the large-scale fluctuations of the flow velocity. Combining the numerical estimate of the slip velocity magnitude with a simple theoretical model, we show that the scaling $\left \langle v_z \right \rangle /v_{q}\propto 1/{\textit {Fr}}$ originates from a combination of the nonlinear drag and the nearly isotropic behaviour of the slip velocity at large ${\textit {Fr}}$ that drastically reduces the mean rise speed.

Bubble-mediated gas exchange in turbulent flow is critical in bubble column chemical reactors as well as for ocean–atmosphere gas exchange related to air entrained by breaking waves. Understanding the transfer rate from a single bubble in turbulence at large Péclet numbers (defined as the ratio between the rate of advection and diffusion of gas) is important as it can be used for improving models on a larger scale. We characterize the mass transfer of dilute gases from a single bubble in a homogeneous isotropic turbulent flow in the limit of negligible bubble volume variations. We show that the mass transfer occurs within a thin diffusive boundary layer at the bubble–liquid interface, whose thickness decreases with an increase in turbulent Péclet number, $\widetilde {{Pe}}$. We propose a suitable time scale $\theta$ for Higbie (Trans. AIChE, vol. 31, 1935, pp. 365–389) penetration theory, $\theta = d_0/\tilde {u}$, based on $d_0$ the bubble diameter and $\tilde {u}$ a characteristic turbulent velocity, here $\tilde {u}=\sqrt {3}\,u_{{rms}}$, where $u_{{rms}}$ is the large-scale turbulence fluctuations. This leads to a non-dimensional transfer rate ${Sh} = 2(3)^{1/4}\sqrt {\widetilde {{Pe}}/{\rm \pi} }$ from the bubble in the isotropic turbulent flow. The theoretical prediction is verified by direct numerical simulations of mass transfer of dilute gas from a bubble in homogeneous and isotropic turbulence, and very good agreement is observed as long as the thin boundary layer is properly resolved.

We investigate the modes of deformation of an initially spherical bubble immersed in a homogeneous and isotropic turbulent background flow. We perform direct numerical simulations of the two-phase incompressible Navier–Stokes equations, considering a low-density bubble in the high-density turbulent flow at various Weber numbers (the ratio of turbulent and surface tension forces) using the air–water density ratio. We discuss a theoretical framework for the bubble deformation in a turbulent flow using a spherical harmonic decomposition. We propose, for each mode of bubble deformation, a forcing term given by the statistics of velocity and pressure fluctuations, evaluated on a sphere of the same radius. This approach formally relates the bubble deformation and the background turbulent velocity fluctuations, in the limit of small deformations. The growth of the total surface deformation and of each individual mode is computed from the direct numerical simulations using an appropriate Voronoi decomposition of the bubble surface. We show that two successive temporal regimes occur: the first regime corresponds to deformations driven only by inertial forces, with the interface deformation growing linearly in time, in agreement with the model predictions, whereas the second regime results from a balance between inertial forces and surface tension. The transition time between the two regimes is given by the period of the first Rayleigh mode of bubble oscillation. We discuss how our approach can be used to relate the bubble lifetime to the turbulence statistics and eventually show that at high Weber numbers, bubble lifetime can be deduced from the statistics of turbulent fluctuations at the bubble scale.

We study bubble break-up in homogeneous and isotropic turbulence by direct numerical simulations of the two-phase incompressible Navier–Stokes equations. We create the turbulence by forcing in physical space and introduce the bubble once a statistically stationary state is reached. We perform a large ensemble of simulations to investigate the effect of the Weber number (the ratio of turbulent and surface tension forces) on bubble break-up dynamics and statistics, including the child bubble size distribution, and discuss the numerical requirements to obtain results independent of grid size. We characterize the critical Weber number below which no break-up occurs and the associated Hinze scale $d_h$. At Weber number close to stable conditions (initial bubble sizes $d_0\approx d_h$), we observe binary and tertiary break-ups, leading to bubbles mostly between $0.5d_h$ and $d_h$, a signature of a production process local in scale. For large Weber numbers ($d_0> 3d_h$), we observe the creation of a wide range of bubble radii, with numerous child bubbles between $0.1d_h$ and $0.3d_h$, an order of magnitude smaller than the parent bubble. The separation of scales between the parent and child bubble is a signature of a production process non-local in scale. The formation mechanism of these sub-Hinze scale bubbles relates to rapid large deformation and successive break-ups: the first break-up in a sequence leaves highly deformed bubbles which will break again, without recovering a spherical shape and creating an array of much smaller bubbles. We discuss the application of this scenario to the production of sub-Hinze bubbles under breaking waves.

We present an experimental study of bubble coalescence at an air–water interface and characterize the evolution of both the underwater neck and the surface bridge. We explore a wide range of Bond number, $Bo$, which compares gravity and capillary forces and is a dimensionless measure of the free surface's effect on bubble geometry. The nearly spherical $Bo\ll 1$ bubbles exhibit the same inertial–capillary growth of the classic underwater dynamics, with limited upper surface displacement. For $Bo>1$, the bubbles are non-spherical – residing predominantly above the free surface – and, while an inertial–capillary scaling for the underwater neck growth is still observed, the controlling length scale is defined by the curvature of the bubbles near their contact region. With it, an inertial–capillary scaling collapses the neck contours across all Bond numbers to a universal shape. Finally, we characterize the upper surface with a simple oscillatory model which balances capillary forces and the inertia of liquid trapped at the centre of the liquid-film surface.

Understanding the physics of viscoelastic liquid jets is relevant to jet-based printing and deposition techniques. In this paper we study the behaviour of jets induced from viscoelastic liquid films, using the mechanical impulse provided by a laser pulse to actuate jet formation. We present direct numerical simulations of viscoelastic liquid jets solving the two-phase flow problem, accounting for the Oldroyd-B rheology. We describe how the jet extension time and length are controlled by the Deborah number (ratio of the elastic and inertia-capillary time scales), the viscous dissipation described by the Ohnesorge number (ratio of the viscous-capillary and inertia-capillary time scales), as well as the ratio of laser impulse energy to the energy required to create free surface during jet formation and propagation. Using the droplet ejection laser threshold energy of a Newtonian liquid, we investigate the influence of increasing viscoelastic effects. We show that viscoelastic effects can modify the effective drop size at the tip of the jet, while the maximum jet length increases with increasing Deborah number. Using the simulations, we identify a high-Deborah-number regime, where the time of maximum jet extension can be described as $t_{max} = c_1 De^{1/4}$, with $c_1$ depending on the Ohnesorge number and blister geometry, while the length of maximum extension reaches an asymptotic value $L_{max}^{\infty }$ for $De>100$, $L_{max}^{\infty }$ depending on the Ohnesorge number and laser energy. The observed asymptotic relationships are in good agreement with experiments performed at much higher Deborah numbers.

A fundamental understanding of the filament thinning of viscoelastic fluids is important in practical applications such as spraying and printing of complex materials. Here, we present direct numerical simulations of the two-phase axisymmetric momentum equations using the volume-of-fluid technique for interface tracking and the log-conformation transformation to solve the viscoelastic constitutive equation. The numerical results for the filament thinning are in excellent agreement with the theoretical description developed with a slender body approximation. We show that the off-diagonal stress component of the polymeric stress tensor is important and should not be neglected when investigating the later stages of filament thinning. This demonstrates that such numerical methods can be used to study details not captured by the one-dimensional slender body approximation, and pave the way for numerical studies of viscoelastic fluid flows.

The Lagrangian transport due to non-breaking and breaking focusing wave packets is examined. We present direct numerical simulations of the two-phase air–water Navier–Stokes equations describing focusing wave packets, investigating the Lagrangian drift by tracking tracer particles in the water before, during and after the breaking event. The net horizontal transport for non-breaking focusing packets is well described by the classical Stokes drift, both at the surface and in the bulk of the fluid, where the e-folding scale of the evanescent vertical profile is given by the characteristic wavenumber. For focusing wave packets that lead to breaking, we observe an added drift that can be ten times larger than the classical Stokes drift for a non-breaking packet at the surface, while the initial depth of the broken fluid scales with the wave height at breaking. We find that the breaking induced Lagrangian transport scales with the breaking strength. A simple scaling argument is proposed to describe this added drift and is found to be consistent with the direct numerical simulations. Applications to upper ocean processes are discussed.

We examine the partitioning of the energy transferred to the water column by deep-water wave breaking; in this case between the turbulent and mean flow. It is found that more than 95 % of the energy lost by the wave field is dissipated in the first four wave periods after the breaking event. The remaining energy is in the coherent vortex generated by breaking. A scaling argument shows that the ratio between the energy in this breaking generated mean current and the total energy lost from the wave field to the water column due to breaking scales as $(hk)^{1/2}$, where $hk$ is the local slope at breaking. This model is examined using direct numerical simulations of breaking waves solving the full two-phase air–water Navier–Stokes equations, as well as the limited available laboratory data, and good agreement is found for strong breaking waves.

We investigate air entrainment and bubble statistics in three-dimensional breaking waves through novel direct numerical simulations of the two-phase air–water flow, resolving the length scales relevant for the bubble formation problem, the capillary length and the Hinze scale. The dissipation due to breaking is found to be in good agreement with previous experimental observations and inertial scaling arguments. The air entrainment properties and bubble size statistics are investigated for various initial characteristic wave slopes. For radii larger than the Hinze scale, the bubble size distribution, can be described by $N(r,t)=B(V_{0}/2{\rm\pi})({\it\varepsilon}(t-{\rm\Delta}{\it\tau})/Wg)r^{-10/3}r_{m}^{-2/3}$ during the active breaking stages, where ${\it\varepsilon}(t-{\rm\Delta}{\it\tau})$ is the time-dependent turbulent dissipation rate, with ${\rm\Delta}{\it\tau}$ the collapse time of the initial air pocket entrained by the breaking wave, $W$ a weighted vertical velocity of the bubble plume, $r_{m}$ the maximum bubble radius, $g$ gravity, $V_{0}$ the initial volume of air entrained, $r$ the bubble radius and $B$ a dimensionless constant. The active breaking time-averaged bubble size distribution is described by $\bar{N}(r)=B(1/2{\rm\pi})({\it\epsilon}_{l}L_{c}/Wg{\it\rho})r^{-10/3}r_{m}^{-2/3}$, where ${\it\epsilon}_{l}$ is the wave dissipation rate per unit length of breaking crest, ${\it\rho}$ the water density and $L_{c}$ the length of breaking crest. Finally, the averaged total volume of entrained air, $\bar{V}$, per breaking event can be simply related to ${\it\epsilon}_{l}$ by $\bar{V}=B({\it\epsilon}_{l}L_{c}/Wg{\it\rho})$, which leads to a relationship for a characteristic slope, $S$, of $\bar{V}\propto S^{5/2}$. We propose a phenomenological turbulent bubble break-up model based on earlier models and the balance between mechanical dissipation and work done against buoyancy forces. The model is consistent with the numerical results and existing experimental results.

We investigate the influence of capillary effects on wave breaking through direct numerical simulations of the Navier–Stokes equations for a two-phase air–water flow. A parametric study in terms of the Bond number, $\mathit{Bo}$, and the initial wave steepness, ${\it\epsilon}$, is performed at a relatively high Reynolds number. The onset of wave breaking as a function of these two parameters is determined and a phase diagram in terms of $({\it\epsilon},\mathit{Bo})$ is presented that distinguishes between non-breaking gravity waves, parasitic capillaries on a gravity wave, spilling breakers and plunging breakers. At high Bond number, a critical steepness ${\it\epsilon}_{c}$ defines the onset of wave breaking. At low Bond number, the influence of surface tension is quantified through two boundaries separating, first gravity–capillary waves and breakers, and second spilling and plunging breakers; both boundaries scaling as ${\it\epsilon}\sim (1+\mathit{Bo})^{-1/3}$. Finally the wave energy dissipation is estimated for each wave regime and the influence of steepness and surface tension effects on the total wave dissipation is discussed. The breaking parameter $b$ is estimated and is found to be in good agreement with experimental results for breaking waves. Moreover, the enhanced dissipation by parasitic capillaries is consistent with the dissipation due to breaking waves.

We experimentally study linear and nonlinear waves on the surface of a fluid covered by an elastic sheet where both tension and flexural waves occur. An optical method is used to obtain the full space–time wave field, and the dispersion relation of the waves. When the forcing is increased, a significant nonlinear shift of the dispersion relation is observed. We show that this shift is due to an additional tension of the sheet induced by the transverse motion of a fundamental mode of the sheet. When the system is subjected to a random-noise forcing at large scales, a regime of hydroelastic wave turbulence is observed with a power-law spectrum of the scale, in disagreement with the wave turbulence prediction. We show that the separation between relevant time scales is well satisfied at each scale of the turbulent cascade as expected theoretically. The wave field anisotropy, and finite size effects are also quantified and are not at the origin of the discrepancy. Finally, the dissipation is found to occur at all scales of the cascade, contrary to the theoretical hypothesis, and could thus explain this disagreement.
