The combined effect of internal and external intermittency on the statistical properties of small-scale turbulence is investigated in temporally evolving, planar turbulent jet flows at different Reynolds numbers using highly resolved direct numerical simulations. In turbulent jet flows, the phenomenon of external intermittency originates from a sharp layer, known as the turbulent/non-turbulent interface, that separates the turbulent core from the surrounding irrotational fluid. First, it is shown that low-order and higher-order structure functions in both the core and the shear layer of the jet satisfy complete self-preservation, which means that structure functions are invariant with time and collapse over the entire range of scales, regardless of the set of length and velocity scales used for normalization. Next, the impact of external intermittency on small-scale turbulence is studied along the cross-wise direction by the self-similarity of structure functions. It is shown that structure functions exhibit from the centre toward the edge of the flow a growing departure from self-similarity and the prediction of classical scaling theories. By analysing statistics conditioned on the turbulent portion of the jet, it is demonstrated that this departure is primarily due to external intermittency and the associated similarity-breaking effect.

The dissipation element analysis is applied to the mixture fraction fields of a series of datasets from direct numerical simulations of non-premixed temporally evolving jet flames with jet Reynolds numbers ranging from 4500 to 10 000 and varying stoichiometric mixture fractions. Dissipation elements are space-filling regions where a scalar field behaves monotonically and allow for the analysis of scalar fields in homogeneous isotopic turbulence as well as in complex, highly inhomogeneous and anisotropic flows such as turbulent flames. Statistics of the dissipation element parameters of non-premixed flames are compared to those obtained from non-reacting jets. It is found that the universality of the normalized length distribution of the dissipation elements observed in non-reacting cases also holds true for the reacting flows. The characteristic scaling with the Kolmogorov micro-scale $\eta$ is obtained as well. The effects of combustion on the scalar difference in the dissipation elements are shown and are found to diminish as the Reynolds number and the fuel dilution is increased. The dissipation elements provide the means for a local comparison of the turbulent and characteristic flame scales. A new regime diagram for non-premixed combustion is introduced using coherent structures in the scalar fields, the dissipation element parameters for a local classification of the turbulent flame surface into flamelet-like zones and fine-scale mixing zones in addition to the burning and non-burning zones. The soundness of the regime diagram and the potential consequences for combustion modelling in the individual regimes is demonstrated by the investigation of the correlation between the chemical field and the dissipation element parameters in the individual regimes.

In the range of 4.4 to 49 C, there is an exponential relationship between temperature and trifluralin (α,α,α-trifluoro-2,6-dinitro-N,N-dipropyl-p-toluidine) diffusion coefficients. Diffusion is low in air-dry soil for all temperatures. It increases to a maximum value when the soil has between 8 and 15% w/w soil moisture content and then decreases steadily as moisture content increases. When the air-filled fraction of soil void space is reduced below approximately 40% v/v by either compression or addition of moisture, diffusion begins to decrease. An equation was developed to predict trifluralin diffusion coefficients from a factorial experiment with seven soil moisture contents, five soil temperatures, and two bulk densities. Diffusion coefficients range from 3.8 X 10-11 cm2/sec to 2.8 X 10-6 cm2/sec. Fifteen terms are required in the prediction model to describe accurately the response surface of trifluralin diffusion coefficients. With the equation it is possible to predict trifluralin diffusion coefficients for any combination of measured soil parameters as long as they are represented by the range of the variables used in the experiment.

Evaluations were made of the α,α,α-trifluoro-2,6-dinitro-N,N-dipropyl-p-toluidine (trifluralin) distribution patterns produced by eight incorporating implements. The power rotary cultivator concentrated the trifluralin in the top inch when operating at a 4-inch depth, while the disk, operated at the same depth, concentrated the trifluralin at a point 2 to 3 inches below the surface. All the remaining implements resulted in more than 80% of the recovered trifluralin in the top inch, except for isolated treatments with the Richardson and Lilliston tools. Surface applications resulted in less trifluralin recovery than from any implement. The disk resulted in the highest recovery and was two to three times greater than the recovery from the surface application. The recovery from the Richardson, Lilliston, and Ro-Wheel was 1.5 to 2 times greater than the recovery from the Mix-A-Product, field cultivator, and spike harrow.

Experiments were conducted at Urbana, IL, in 1983 and 1984 to determine the effect of adjuvants, adjuvant rate, and carrier volume on postemergence weed control with bentazon [3-(1-methylethyl)-(1H)-2,1,3-benzothiadiazin-4(3H)-one 2,2-dioxide] and sethoxydim {2-[1-(ethoxyimino)butyl]-5-[2-(ethylthio)propyl]-3-hydroxy-2-cyclohexen-1-one} in soybeans [Glycine max (L.) Merr. ‘Williams’]. Little difference was observed between a petroleum oil:emulsifier blend (83:17, v/v) (POC) and a soybean oil: emulsifier blend (85:15, v/v) (SBOC) in enhancing control of velvetleaf (Abutilon theophrasti Medik. # ABUTH) with 0.6 or 1.1 kg ai/ha bentazon. Application of bentazon in a carrier volume of 94 L/ha provided velvetleaf control equivalent to that applied in 187 L/ha. Increasing the adjuvant rate from 2.3 to 11.7 L/ha increased visible soybean injury but had no effect on velvetleaf control with bentazon. Control of giant foxtail (Setaria faberi Herrm. # SETFA) with 0.1 kg ai/ha sethoxydim was enhanced more by POC than by SBOC. Phytotoxicity of sethoxydim was not altered by changes in carrier volume or adjuvant rate under conditions of adequate soil moisture in 1983. Under limiting soil moisture in 1984, giant foxtail control with sethoxydim increased slightly when the adjuvant rate was increased from 4.6 to 11.7 L/ha, and carrier volume was increased from 47 to 187 L/ha.

Diffusion of trifluralin (α,α,α-trifluoro-2,6-dinitro-N,N-dipropyl-p-toluidine) through Mexico silt loam soil was measured in diffusion cells under laboratory conditions. Radiolabeled herbicide was extracted from each sample and counted by liquid scintillation. Fick's Second Law with a constant diffusion coefficient adequately describes trifluralin diffusion regardless of concentration or diffusing time. Solution diffusion increases directly with bulk densities to 1.1 g/cm3 and then decreases. Vapor diffusion is decreased approximately 50% for every 10% decrease in air-filled porosity. Vapor diffusion contributes the major portion of total diffusion at bulk densities of less than 1.2 g/cm3. For bulk densities between 1.2 and 1.4 g/cm3, the magnitudes of vapor and solution diffusion are similar.

Persistence in the structure of ecological communities can be predicted both by deterministic and by stochastic theory. Evaluating ecological patterns against the neutral theory of biodiversity provides an appropriate methodology for differentiating between these alternatives. We traced the history of benthic foraminiferal communities from the Huon Peninsula, Papua New Guinea. From the well-preserved uplifted reef terrace at Bonah River we reconstructed the benthic foraminiferal communities during a 2200-year period (9000–6800 yr B.P.) of reef building during the Holocene transgressive sea-level rise. We found that the similarity of foraminiferal communities was consistently above 60%, even when comparing communities on either side of a massive volcanic eruption that smothered the existing reef system with ash. Similarly, species diversity and rank dominance were unchanged through time. However, similarity dropped dramatically in the final stages of reef growth, when accommodation space was reduced as sea-level rise slowed. We compared the community inertia index (CII) computed from the observed species abundances with that predicted from neutral theory. Despite the differences in foraminiferal community composition in the younger part of the reef sequence, we found an overall greater degree of community inertia with less variance in observed communities than was predicted from neutral theory, regardless of foraminiferal community size or species migration rate. Thus, persistent species assemblages could not be ascribed to neutral predictions. Ecological incumbency of established foraminiferal species likely prevented stochastic increases in both migrant and rare taxa at the Bonah River site. Regardless of the structuring mechanisms, our reconstruction of Holocene foraminiferal assemblages provides historical context for the management and potential restoration of degraded species assemblages.

The nebular remnant of RS Ophiuchi was modelled using combined HST/ACS imaging and ground-based spectroscopy on day 155 after outburst as a two component bipolar expansion with a low velocity innermost hour-glass over density and a more extended high velocity dumbbell structure. The model was evolved to a much later date, day 455 after outburst, when second epoch HST images were secured. However, due to the lack of simultaneous ground-based spectroscopy the evolved model was much harder to constrain. One suggestion put forward was that the dumbbell structure expanded linearly while the inner hour-glass showed signs of deceleration. Archival data in the form of ground-based spectroscopy on day 415 were subsequently obtained. These new data suggest indeed that a non-linear expansion of the system occurred.

We have entered an era in time-domain astronomy in which the detected rate of explosive transients and important ephemeral states in persistent objects threatens to overwhelm the world's supply of traditional follow-up telescopes. As new, comprehensive time-domain surveys become operational and wide-field multi-messenger observatories come on-line, that problem will become more acute. The goal of this workshop was to foster discussion about how autonomous robotic telescopes and small-aperture conventional telescopes can be employed in the most effective ways to help deal with the coming deluge of scientifically interesting follow-up opportunities. Discussion topics included the role of event brokers, automated event triage, the establishment of cooperative global telescope networks, and real-time coordination of observations at geographically diverse sites. It therefore included brief overviews of the current diverse landscape of telescopes and their interactions, and also considered planned and potential new facilities and operating models.

With the advent of surveys such as the Catalina Real-Time Transient Survey, the Palomar Transient Factory, Pan-STARRS and Gaia, the search for variable objects and transient events is rapidly accelerating. There are, however important existing data-sets from instruments not originally designed to find such events. One example of such an instrument is the Solar Mass Ejection Imager (SMEI), an all-sky space-based differential photometer which is able to produce light curves of bright objects (m ≤ 8) with a 102-minute cadence. In this paper we discuss the use of such an instrument for investigations of novæ, and outline future plans to find other variable objects with this hitherto untapped resource.

U Scorpii was observed in outburst for the tenth time in January 2010. We obtained optical and near-infrared spectroscopy from which we derive a helium abundance of N(He)/N(H) = 0.056±0.020 from the most reliable lines available; this is lower than most other estimates and indicates that the secondary is not helium-rich, as previous studies have suggested. Velocities are found to be up to 14,000 km s−1 in broad components and up to 1,800 km s−1 in narrow line components. The reddening of U Sco is found to be E(B-V) = 0.14 ± 0.12.

The hot-dip coating process faces a particular challenge with the production of high-strength steels. The backdrop to this challenge in the case of the high-strength steels is the enrichment of alloying elements necessary to control the microstructure at the steel's surface. These elements diffuse to the strip surface during the annealing treatment in the furnace and affect the wetting action of the molten zinc. The hot-dip galvanizing of high-strength steels has been tested in numerous laboratory and field trials. New methods for improving zinc coatability have been developed around the world. A focal point of the work at ThyssenKrupp Stahl AG has for this reason lain in the development of a new generation of multiphase steels that achieve an optimum surface quality also in conventional hot-dip coating lines.

Zn is an essential mineral. The role of Zn in atherosclerosis is not clear. Epidemiological studies, which have reported contradictory results, are limited by the use of serum Zn levels as a marker of intake. We assessed the association of toenail Zn, which integrates dietary Zn intake over 3 to 12 months, with the risk of a first myocardial infarction. Toenail Zn concentrations were determined by neutron activation analysis in the European multi-centre case–control study on antioxidants, myocardial infarction and breast cancer. This multi-centre case–control study included 684 cases and 724 controls from eight European countries and Israel. Toenail Zn levels of controls (adjusted for age and study centre) were positively associated with age, α-tocopherol and Se, but not with additional dietary variables or with classical risk factors for CHD. Average toenail Zn was 106·0 mg/kg in cases (95 % CI 103·1, 108·9) and 107·5 mg/kg in controls (95 % CI 104·5, 110·7). After controlling for cardiovascular risk factors and for centre, the adjusted odds ratios of myocardial infarction for quintiles 2–5 of toenail Zn with respect to the first quintile were 0·97 (95 % CI 0·59, 1·58), 1·15 (95 % CI 0·72, 1·85), 0·91 (95 % CI 0·56, 1·50), and 0·85 (95 % CI 0·52, 1·39). The P for trend was 0·45. In conclusion toenail Zn levels (reflecting long-term dietary intake) were not significantly associated with acute myocardial infarction.

The mechanical behavior of a thin film that is clamped to an elastically hard substrate can be compared to a bulk metal by studying the absorption of hydrogen. Since hydrogen is dissolved in interstitial sites and exerts force on neighboring metal atoms, the in-plane stresses increase with increasing hydrogen concentration. In the case of Nb-films covered with a thin Pd layer, stresses of several GPa were measured. Nb and Pd films prepared by evaporation were loaded with hydrogen. Out-of-plane strain and in-plane stresses during electrolytic loading with hydrogen were determined by performing x-ray diffraction and substrate curvature measurements. At low H-concentrations the developing stresses correspond to a clamped film expanding elastically out-of-plane only. Above a critical H-concentration the films deform plastically. In some cases the critical hydrogen concentration corresponds to the terminal H-solubility, above which the hydride precipitates by emission of extrinsic dislocation loops. For the remaining cases a critical stress is reached before passing the phase boundary, which leads to the formation of misfit dislocations at the interface between film and substrate. The concomitant slip lines were observed on the surface of a Gd (0001) film using Scanning Tunneling Microscopy. An additional surface pattern that can be correlated with emitted dislocation loops was observed.
