From November 2019 to April 2020, the prototypical red supergiant Betelgeuse experienced an unexpected and historic dimming. This event was observed worldwide by astrophysicists, and also by the general public with the naked eye. We present here the results of our observing campaign with ESO’s VLT and VLTI in the visible and infrared domains. The observations with VLT/SPHERE-ZIMPOL, VLT/SPHERE-IRDIS, VLTI/GRAVITY and VLTI/MATISSE provide spatially resolved diagnostics of this event. Using PHOENIX atmosphere models and RADMC3D dust radiative transfer simulations, we built a consistent model reproducing the images and the photometry.

Carbon-14 (radiocarbon, 14C) is a long-lived radionuclide (5730 yr) of interest regarding the safety for the management of intermediate level wastes (ILW). The present study gives an overview of the release of 14C from irradiated Zircaloy cladding in alkaline media. 14C is found either in the alloy part of Zircaloy cladding due to the neutron activation of 14N impurities by 14N(n,p)14C reaction, or in the oxide layer (ZrO2) formed at the metal surface by the neutron activation of 17O from UO2 or (U-Pu)O2 fuel and water from the primary circuit in the reactor by 17O(n,α)14C reaction. Various irradiated and unirradiated Zircaloys have been studied. The total 14C inventory has been determined both experimentally and by calculations. The results seem to be in good agreement. Leaching experiments were conducted in alkaline media for several time durations. 14C was mainly released as carboxylic acids. Further, corrosion measurements were performed by using both hydrogen measurements and electrochemical measurements. The corrosion rate (CR) ranges from a few nm/yr to 100 nm/yr depending on the surface conditions and the method used for measurement. From a safety assessment point of view, the instant release fraction (IRF) was determined on irradiated Zircaloy-2. The results showed that the 14C inventory in the oxide was significantly below the 20% commonly used in safety case assessments.

Over the last 5 years France gained a feedback on its NORM industries situation. Regulation imposes to the operators to assess effective doses for workers and members of the public. Theses data were used to update the list of industrial sectors to be regulated for NORM use or storage.

The development of steel refining operations at ArcelorMittalFCWE for the production of ULS steels is reported. Several plants with different equipments produce grades with S <30 ppm, thus permitting to identify the most efficient process, from hot metal desulfurization to secondary metallurgy. For sites producing steels with S <30 ppm, four secondary metallurgy routes coexist in ArcelorMittal FCWE. The Vacuum Tank Degasser makes it possible to reach very low S and N contents simultaneously. To face the increase of the share of Ultra Low Sulfur products, it is necessary to further enhance the kinetics of desulfurization by steel - slag stirring at the atmospheric pressure.

We present some significant results of collisional excitation X-ray laser experiments in plasmas produced by a laser. We studied the amplification in Ne- and Ni-like ions by varying both the nature and the thickness of targets, the irradiation, and the wavelength of the driving laser. Some potentially interesting scalings as a function of the atomic number of the lasing element are demonstrated in the Ne-like system. An order-of-magnitude increase in gain in the Ni-like experiments was determined.

Les dispositions du code de la santé publique concernant les rayonnements ionisants seront prochainement mises à jour pour achever la transposition de la directive 2003/122/Euratom du Conseil du 22 décembre 2003 relative au contrôle des sources radioactives scellées de haute activité et des sources orphelines et prendre en compte les nouvelles prérogatives accordées à l’Autorité de sûreté nucléaire (ASN). À cette occasion, des mesures de simplification administrative seront introduites dans le régime d’autorisation et de déclaration des sources de rayonnements ionisants et les contrôles réalisés par les organismes agréés par l’ASN seront renforcées.

Clogging of Continuous Casting nozzle has a detrimental effecton productivity and product quality; it also increases productioncosts and goes against security. Many factors contribute to theclogging phenomenon, including the detailed process parametersof continuous casting and secondary metallurgy. Clogging can be effectively limited by Argon injection that isusually performed through the stopper rod. The nature andquality of the refractory equipment is another factor that must beconsidered carefully. The clogging mechanism has been clearlyascribed to the level and nature of non metallic inclusions, thus tothe secondary metallurgy process. Effective counter measures that have been successfullyimplemented in Arcelor to achieve long sequence casting arepresented.

The Lyot Project near-infrared JHK coronagraph achieved first light on the Advanced Electro-Optical System (AEOS) in March 2004. Optical pupil plane imaging at video rates from this coronagraph provides data on atmospheric scintillation and quasi-static pupil intensity variations. We examine the effect of these variations on coronagraphic performance. Early simulations suggested Strehl ratio reductions of the order of 2–3% due to residual uncorrected phase aberrations in H-band. We find that static or quasi-static pupil illumination non-uniformity in I-band reduces Strehl by $\sim$2%. A lower bound on the effects of dynamic illumination variation over the pupil is also $\sim$2% in I-band. Some of the static intensity variations in the pupil are due to pinned deformable mirror (DM) actuators. We simulate the effects a pinned actuator has on the coronagraph. The resultant speckles in simulated coronagraphic images show similarities to some Lyot Project PSFs. This highlights the importance of knowledge of the pupil in next-generation extreme AO coronagraphs in order to realize the predicted photometric dynamic range of their images.

Adaptive optics (AO) systems have significantly improved astronomical imaging capabilities over the last decade, and are revolutionizing the kinds of science possible with 4-5 m class ground-based telescopes. A thorough understanding of AO system performance at the telescope can enable new frontiers of science as observations push AO systems to their performance limits. We look at the understanding we have gained from recent Lyot Project images at the Advanced Electro-Optical System (AEOS) 3.6 m telescope to show how progress made in improving WFR can be measured directly in improved science images. We describe how wave front errors affect the AO point-spread function (PSF), and model details of AEOS AO to simulate a PSF which matches the actual AO PSF in the astronomical H-band. Finally, we estimate the impact of improvements to wave front reconstruction techniques on diffraction-limited coronagraphy with the Lyot Project near-infrared coronagraph.

Cet utilitaire facilite la mise en application des réglementations extraites de la Directive européenne 96/29 dans le respect des nouvelles limites. Il est une aide à la validation par l'utilisateur des démarches et des estimations des doses consécutives à l'expositioninterne.

In view of the considerable ground covered by the Commission at its Paris meetings and the fairly complete record of the activities of institutes and observatories, etc. published in the Minutes, it has not been deemed profitable by the president to call for further reports in advance of the Stockholm meeting. At the Paris meeting it was agreed that such reports be printed independently before each meeting of the Union and that reprints of or references to the published reports be sent to the president. It is hoped that all such reports if ready will be made available before the Stockholm meeting so that they may be summarized by the representatives in attendance or by the president and recorded in the Minutes. With reference to the pronouncement at the Paris meeting “that it is eminently desirable that more attention be given to the development of accurate general perturbations and mean elements on the basis of accurate osculating elements”, the president has visited the Planeten-Institut at Frankfurt and the Rechen-Institut at Berlin and has been in correspondence with the Leningrad Institute. From these sources particularly valuable material has been received.
