The knowledge of the critical periods of crop-weed competition is crucial for designing weed management strategies in cropping systems. In the Lower Yangtze Valley, China, field experiments were conducted in 2011 and 2012 to study the effect of interference from mixed natural weed populations on cotton growth and yield and determine the critical period for weed control (CPWC) in direct-seeded cotton. Two treatments were applied: allowing weeds to infest the crop or keeping plots weed-free for increasing periods (0, 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, and 20 weeks) after crop emergence. The results showed that mixed natural weed infestations led to 35 to 55 cm shorter cotton plants with stem diameters 10 to 13 mm smaller throughout the season, fitting well with modified Gompertz and logistic models, respectively. Season-long competition with weeds reduced the number of fruit branches per plant by 65% to 82%, decreasing boll number per plant by 86% to 96% and single boll weight by approximately 24%. Weed-free seed cotton yields ranged from 2,900 to 3,130 kg ha-1, while yield loss increased with the duration of weed infestation, reaching up to 83% to 96% compared with permanent weed-free plots. Modified Gompertz and logistic models were used to analyze the impact of increasing weed control duration and weed interference on relative seed cotton yield (percentage of season-long weed-free cotton), respectively. Based on a 5% yield-loss threshold, the CPWC was found to be from 145 growing degree days (GDD) to 994 GDD, corresponding to 14 days after emergence (DAE) to 85 DAE. These findings emphasize the importance of implementing effective weed control measures from 14 DAE to 85 DAE in the Lower Yangtze Valley, China, to prevent crop losses exceeding a 5% yield-loss threshold.

Intermittent swimming behaviour is commonly observed in larval zebrafish, often attributed to energy-saving mechanisms. In this study, we utilize a hybrid approach combining deep reinforcement learning and the immersed boundary–lattice Boltzmann method to train a larval zebrafish-like swimmer to reach a target with minimized energy expenditure. We find that when the tail-beat period is fixed, continuous swimming emerges as the optimal strategy. However, when the tail-beat period is allowed to vary, intermittent swimming proves superior in energy performance, achieved through reductions in tail-beat amplitude and frequency. Our detailed analysis reveals that intermittent swimmers employ rapid backward tail flicks to attain high speeds, coupled with slower forward tail flicks and coasting phases to conserve energy. Furthermore, we derive scaling laws governing the swimming performance of trained fish. These results offer valuable insights into the intermittent swimming patterns of fish, with implications for understanding bio-inspired locomotion and informing the design of energy-efficient aquatic systems.

Five typical metal cations (i.e. Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+ and Al3+) were selected as representatives to study the influence of metal cations on the dissolution and transformation of biotite. This work focussed on the mineralogical features of transformation products and phase transformation mechanisms by utilising modern spectroscopic methods and micro-beam characterisation techniques. In comparison with a control system, K+ inhibited the dissolution and transformation of biotite, leading to the generation of amorphous iron hydroxides on the biotite surface. Na+, Mg2+ and Ca2+ promoted the dissolution of biotite but inhibited its transformation into kaolinite, with the Na system producing sodium-bearing biotite, vermiculite, hematite and a small amount of kaolinite, and the Mg and Ca systems producing mainly vermiculite, chlorite and hematite. Al3+ notably accelerated the dissolution and transformation of biotite, resulting in well-crystallised kaolinite and hematite. Furthermore, metal cations changed the formation mechanism of kaolinite by altering the dissolution rate of biotite. Within the blank system, biotite dissolved slowly, with elements (i.e. Al and Si) accumulating on the biotite surface and growing epitaxially into kaolinite; whereas in the Al system, the rapid dissolution of biotite provided a large amount of Si, which combined with Al in the solution, forming kaolinite via a dissolution–recrystallisation process. In addition, the exchange reactions of metal-cation–K+ and the competitive adsorption of metal-cation–proton simultaneously constrained the dissolution process of biotite. This work offers a theoretical basis for an in-depth comprehension of the factors influencing biotite weathering and new insights into the evolution of clay minerals in terrestrial surface environments.

The Argentine ant (Linepithema humile) and the little fire ant (Wasmannia auropunctata) are among the top 100 invasive alien species globally, causing significant ecological and economic harm. Therefore, it is crucial to study their potential geographic distribution worldwide. This study aimed to predict their global distribution under current and future climate conditions. We used distribution data from various sources, including CABI, GBIF, and PIAKey, and key climate variables selected from 19 environmental factors to model their potential geographic distribution using MaxEnt. The AUC values were 0.925 and 0.937 for L. humile and W. auropunctata, respectively, indicating good predictive performance. Suitable areas for L. humile were mainly in southern North America, northern South America, Europe, central Asia, southern Oceania, and parts of Africa, while W. auropunctata suitable areas were mostly in southern North America, most of South America, a small part of Europe, southern Asia, central Africa, and some parts of Oceania. Under climate change scenario, suitable areas for L. humile increased, while highly suitable areas for W. auropunctata decreased. The top four countries with the largest areas of overlapping suitable habitat under current climate were Brazil, China, Australia, and Argentina, while under future SSP585 climate scenario, the top four countries were Brazil, China, Indonesia, and Argentina. Some countries, such as Estonia and Finland, will see an overlapping adaptation area under climate change. In conclusion, this study provides insight into controlling the spread and harm of L. humile and W. auropunctata.

Double-cone ignition [Zhang et al., Phil. Trans. R. Soc. A 378, 20200015 (2020)] was proposed recently as a novel path for direct-drive inertial confinement fusion using high-power lasers. In this scheme, plasma jets with both high density and high velocity are required for collisions. Here we report preliminary experimental results obtained at the Shenguang-II upgrade laser facility, employing a CHCl shell in a gold cone irradiated with a two-ramp laser pulse. The CHCl shell was pre-compressed by the first laser ramp to a density of 3.75 g/cm3 along the isentropic path. Subsequently, the target was further compressed and accelerated by the second laser ramp in the cone. According to the simulations, the plasma jet reached a density of up to 15 g/cm3, while measurements indicated a velocity of 126.8 ± 17.1 km/s. The good agreements between experimental data and simulations are documented.

Autoimmune diseases are pathological autoimmune reactions in the body caused by various factors, which can lead to tissue damage and organ dysfunction. They can be divided into organ-specific and systemic autoimmune diseases. These diseases usually involve various body systems, including the blood, muscles, bones, joints and soft tissues. The transient receptor potential (TRP) and PIEZO receptors, which resulted in David Julius and Ardem Patapoutian winning the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2021, attracted people's attention. Most current studies on TRP and PIEZO receptors in autoimmune diseases have been carried out on animal model, only few clinical studies have been conducted. Therefore, this study aimed to review existing studies on TRP and PIEZO to understand the roles of these receptors in autoimmune diseases, which may help elucidate novel treatment strategies.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is the second most common cardiomyopathy affecting children and adolescents and is the main cause of sudden death of young athletes. The natural prognosis of children with severe hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy is not optimistic, and it is not uncommon for children with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy who do not respond to medication. Surgical treatment is often the only solution. Conventional surgical methods in the past include classic or modified extended Morrow operation, classic or modified Konno operation, and Ross-Konno operation. In recent years, with the development of minimally invasive surgery, various minimally invasive surgical methods have emerged endlessly. Because the incision of minimally invasive cardiac surgery is significantly smaller than that of traditional surgery, it causes less trauma, recovers quickly after surgery, and has the advantage of no difference in surgical effect compared with traditional median sternotomy. Tally endoscopic transmitral myectomy, RTM, minimally right thoracotomy, and other surgical methods have achieved encouraging results in adults and some older children with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy. The appearance of transapical beating-heart septectomy has brought the treatment of hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy from the era of cardiopulmonary bypass and cardiac arrest to a new era of minimally invasive beating-heart surgery. In the past, there were few articles about the treatment of children with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy. This article reviewed the new progress and prognosis of surgical treatment of children with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy at home and abroad.

Polytypism is common in micas, and the frequency of polytype occurrence is believed to be related closely to the crystallization conditions and chemical compositions of the corresponding fluids and melts. Coexisting multiple standard and complex/disordered polytypes in igneous rocks generally reflect a complicated magma evolution history. The purpose of the current study was to clarify the origin of coexisting biotite polytypes and their growth mechanism. Micro-X-ray diffraction (μXRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to investigate Fe-rich biotite phenocrysts in rhyolite from the Long Valley Caldera, California, USA. The μXRD analyses characterized various polytypes, and TEM observations revealed that common polytypes (e.g. 1M, 2M1, and 3T) and rare polytypes (e.g. 4M2 and 4A8) coexist within biotite monocrystals. The two 4-layer polytypes of Fe-rich biotite, 4M2 and 4A8, were identified via selected-area electron diffraction (SAED) and high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (HRSTEM) at the atomic resolution, with unique stacking sequences ([0222] for 4M2 and [002$\overline{2}$] for 4A8). Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) results showed differences in their chemical compositions, especially Fe and K. The 4A8 polytype is reported for the first time. The present study suggested that environmental changes, such as rapid cooling and inhomogeneous compositional distribution, led to chemical and structural oscillations and complex nucleation of the two 4-layer polytypes. Screw dislocations producing spiral growth enhance polytype stability and form ordered long-period/complex polytypes. These results are useful to understand the origin of long-period/complex polytypes and the intergrowths of diverse polytypes formed in non-equilibrium crystallization environments.

Isomorphous substitutions of Mg and Fe for Al generally appear in the octahedral sheets of montmorillonite, whereas they are infrequent in kaolinite. Therefore, the release of Mg and Fe from the octahedral sheets probably happens during the transformation of montmorillonite into kaolinite, which could affect the migration of Mg and Fe from clay minerals into surrounding environments. The objective of the current study was to investigate the relationship between Mg and Fe release during the transformation of montmorillonite into kaolinite. The results showed that the d060 value of clay minerals decreased slightly, and the intensities of both the AlMg–OH and AlFe–OH bending vibrations also decreased gradually. In addition, the (Mg+Fe)/Al (major octahedral ions) atomic ratio of kaolinite was lower than that of montmorillonite, especially in identical hydrothermal products. These results indicated that Mg and Fe ions were released progressively from the octahedral sheets during the transformation of montmorillonite into kaolinite. Moreover, the changed relative concentrations of Mg and Fe ions in the supernatant solutions after hydrothermal reactions suggested a random distribution of Mg and/or Fe in the octahedral sheets of the montmorillonite. These results improve understanding of the release relationship between Mg and Fe during clay mineral evolution and of the distribution of these two ions in the octahedral sheets, as well as the chemical composition of clay minerals as an indicator of geological environments.

To enhance the performance of anti-ship missiles cooperative attack, this paper proposes a finite-time trajectory shaping-based cooperative guidance law (TSCGL). Firstly, the cooperative guidance model is established on segmented linearisation of the missile’s heading angle. Then, a trajectory shaping guidance law for a single missile is derived by a weighted optimal energy cost function and Schwarz inequality. On this basis, a finite-time TSCGL is proposed combined with trajectory shaping technology and finite-time theory. The desirable finite-time convergence performance can ensure a simultaneous attack. Through an improved method of time-to-go estimation, it is independent of small-angle assumption and relaxes the launching conditions of the missiles. Additionally, the proposed finite-time TSCGL can achieve better damage performance through energy management. Finally, simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed finite-time TSCGL.

One of the most common harmful mites in edible fungi is Histiostoma feroniarum Dufour (Acaridida: Histiostomatidae), a fungivorous astigmatid mite that feeds on hyphae and fruiting bodies, thereby transmitting pathogens. This study examined the effects of seven constant temperatures and 10 types of mushrooms on the growth and development of H. feroniarum, as well as its host preference. Developmental time for the total immature stages was significantly affected by the type of mushroom species, ranging from 4.3 ± 0.4 days (reared on Pleurotus eryngii var. tuoliensis Mou at 28°C) to 17.1 ± 2.3 days (reared on Auricularia polytricha Sacc. at 19°C). The temperature was a major factor in the formation of facultative heteromorphic deutonymphs (hypopi). The mite entered the hypopus stage when the temperature dropped to 16°C or rose above 31°C. The growth and development of this mite were significantly influenced by the type of species and variety of mushrooms. Moreover, the fungivorous astigmatid mite preferred to feed on the ‘Wuxiang No. 1’ strain of Lentinula edodes (Berk.) Pegler and the ‘Gaowenxiu’ strain of P. pulmonarius (Fr.) Quél., with a shorter development period compared with that of feeding on other strains. These results therefore quantify the effect of host type and temperature on fungivorous astigmatid mite growth and development rates, and provide a reference for applying mushroom cultivar resistance to biological pest control.

As a typical plasma-based optical element that can sustain ultra-high light intensity, plasma density gratings driven by intense laser pulses have been extensively studied for wide applications. Here, we show that the plasma density grating driven by two intersecting driver laser pulses is not only nonuniform in space but also varies over time. Consequently, the probe laser pulse that passes through such a dynamic plasma density grating will be depolarized, that is, its polarization becomes spatially and temporally variable. More importantly, the laser depolarization may spontaneously take place for crossed laser beams if their polarization angles are arranged properly. The laser depolarization by a dynamic plasma density grating may find application in mitigating parametric instabilities in laser-driven inertial confinement fusion.

We developed a mechanism model which allows for simulating the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) transmission dynamics with the combined effects of human adaptive behaviours and vaccination, aiming at predicting the end time of COVID-19 infection in global scale. Based on the surveillance information (reported cases and vaccination data) between 22 January 2020 and 18 July 2022, we validated the model by Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) fitting method. We found that (1) if without adaptive behaviours, the epidemic could sweep the world in 2022 and 2023, causing 3.098 billion of human infections, which is 5.39 times of current number; (2) 645 million people could be avoided from infection due to vaccination; and (3) in current scenarios of protective behaviours and vaccination, infection cases would increase slowly, levelling off around 2023, and it would end completely in June 2025, causing 1.024 billion infections, with 12.5 million death. Our findings suggest that vaccination and the collective protection behaviour remain the key determinants against the global process of COVID-19 transmission.

Trichoderma polysporum (Link) Rifai HZ-31 fermentation broth was separated and purified by extraction, column chromatography, and high-performance liquid chromatography. Four monomer compounds with strong herbicidal activity were obtained: p-hydroxyphenyl-2,3-dihydroxypropyl ether, o-hydroxy-3-carbonyl-1-phenylpropanol, 1,8-propanediol o-xylene, and 2-3-dihydroxypropyl propionate. The biological activity verification test indicated that the four monomer compounds could inhibit the germination of wild oat (Avena fatua L.) and canola (Brassica napus L.) seeds. Of the four, compound 3 (1,8-propanediol o-xylene) had obvious inhibitory effects on the germination of A. fatua and B. napus seeds, with inhibition rates of 83.33% and 86.67%, respectively. Therefore, the identification of this monomer compound lays a foundation for the further development of a novel microbial herbicide by directly utilizing it and developing new derivatives with herbicidal functions as lead compounds.

In strong-field physics experiments with ultraintense lasers, a single-shot cross-correlator (SSCC) is essential for fast optimization of the pulse contrast and meaningful comparison with theory for each pulse shot. To simultaneously characterize an ultrashort pulse and its long pedestal, the SSCC device must have both a high resolution and a large temporal window. However, the resolution and window in all kinds of single-shot measurement contradict each other in principle. Here we propose and demonstrate a novel SSCC device with two separate measurement channels: channel-1 for the large-window pedestal measurement has a moderate resolution but a large window, while channel-2 for the ultrashort pulse measurement has a small window but a high resolution; this allows the accurate characterization of the pulse contrast in a single shot. A two-channel SSCC device with a 200-fs resolution and 114-ps window has been developed and tested for its application in ultraintense lasers at 800 nm.
