Clay swelling, an important phenomenon in natural systems, can dramatically affect the properties of soils and sediments. Of particular interest in low-salinity, saturated systems are osmotic hydrates, forms of smectite in which the layer separation greatly exceeds the thickness of a single smectite layer due to the intercalation of water. In situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies have shown a strong link between ionic strength and average interlayer spacing in osmotic hydrates but also indicate the presence of structural disorder that has not been fully described. In the present study the structural state of expanded smectite in sodium chloride solutions was investigated by combining very low electron dose, high-resolution cryogenic-transmission electron microscopy observations with XRD experiments. Wyoming smectite (SWy-2) was embedded in vitreous ice to evaluate clay structure in aqua. Lattice-fringe images showed that smectite equilibrated in aqueous, low-ionic-strength solutions, exists as individual smectite layers, osmotic hydrates composed of parallel layers, as well as disordered layer conformations. No evidence was found here for edge-to-sheet attractions, but significant variability in interlayer spacing was observed. Whether this variation could be explained by a dependence of the magnitude of long-range cohesive (van der Waals) forces on the number of layers in a smectite particle was investigated here. Calculations of the Hamaker constant for layer-layer interactions showed that van der Waals forces may span at least five layers plus the intervening water and confirmed that forces vary with layer number. Drying of the disordered osmotic hydrates induced re-aggregation of the smectite to form particles that exhibited coherent scattering domains. Clay disaggregation and restacking may be considered as an example of oriented attachment, with the unusual distinction that it may be cycled repeatedly by changing solution conditions.

Extremely hard, wear-resistant SiC-bonded diamond materials with diamond contents of approximately 45–60% by volume can be prepared by pressureless infiltration of shaped diamond compacts with silicon. Materials with diamond grain sizes in the range of 10–100 µm can be produced having a free silicon content of less than 5 vol%. Components with large dimensions can be prepared as graded or ungraded materials. Graded components are composed of silicon infiltrated SiC base material with diamond–SiC composite layers of 0.1 mm by dip coating technology to several mm in thickness by doubled die pressing in regions with high loading. This creates the possibility of producing low-cost, wear-resistant components of various geometries and dimensions with bending strengths of 400–500 MPa, hardness values of 48 GPa, and fracture toughness levels of 4.5–5 MPa m1/2 for use in extreme wear conditions. Thermal conductivities of up to 500 W/(m K) were obtained, render these materials interesting for heat sinks.

Radio interferometers suffer from the problem of missing information in their data, due to the gaps between the antennae. This results in artifacts, such as bright rings around sources, in the images obtained. Multiple deconvolution algorithms have been proposed to solve this problem and produce cleaner radio images. However, these algorithms are unable to correctly estimate uncertainties in derived scientific parameters or to always include the effects of instrumental errors. We propose an alternative technique called Bayesian Inference for Radio Observations (BIRO) which uses a Bayesian statistical framework to determine the scientific parameters and instrumental errors simultaneously directly from the raw data, without making an image. We use a simple simulation of Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope data including pointing errors and beam parameters as instrumental effects, to demonstrate the use of BIRO.

From the galaxy power spectrum in redshift space, we derive semi-analytical results on the generic degeneracy of galaxy clustering measurements. Defining the observables A = Gbσ8 and R = Gfσ8, (being G the growth function, b the bias, f the growth rate, and σ8 the amplitude of the power spectrum), we perform a Fisher matrix formalism to forecast the expected precision of these quantities for a Euclid-like survey. Among the results we found that galaxy surveys have generically a slightly negative correlation between A and R, and they can always measure R about 3.7 to 4.7 times better than A.

If the voids that we see today in the distribution of galaxies existed at recombination, they will leave an imprint on the cosmic microwave background (CMB). On the other hand, if these voids formed much later, their effect on the CMB will be negligible and will not be observed with the current generation of experiments. In this paper, presented at the 2004 Annual Scientific Meeting of the Astronomical Society of Australia, we discuss our ongoing investigations into voids of primordial origin. We show that if voids in the cold dark matter distribution existed at the epoch of decoupling, they could contribute significantly to the apparent rise in CMB power on small scales detected by the Cosmic Background Imager (CBI) Deep Field. Here we present our improved method for predicting the effects of primordial voids on the CMB in which we treat a void as an external source in the cold dark matter (CDM) distribution employing a Boltzmann solver. Our improved predictions include the effects of a cosmological constant (Λ) and acoustic oscillations generated by voids at early times. We find that models with relatively large voids on the last scattering surface predict too much CMB power in an Einstein–de Sitter background cosmology but could be consistent with the current CMB observations in a ΛCDM universe.

There is much interest in the recent years in the nanoscale metallic multilayered composite materials due to their unusual mechanical properties, such as very high flow strength and stable plastic flow to large strains. These unique mechanical properties have been proposed to result from the interface-dominated plasticity mechanisms in nanoscale composite materials. Studying how the dislocation configurations and densities evolve during deformation will be crucial in understanding the yield, work hardening, and recovery mechanisms in the nanolayered materials. In an effort to shed light on these topics, uniaxial compression experiments on nanoscale Cu/Nb single-crystal multilayer pillars using ex situ synchrotron-based Laue x-ray microdiffraction technique were conducted. Using this approach, we studied the nanoscale Cu/Nb multilayer pillars before and after uniaxial compression to about 14% of plastic strain and found significant Laue peak broadening in the Cu phase, which indicates storage of statistically stored dislocations, while no significant Laue peak broadening was observed in the Nb phase in the nanoscale multilayers. These observations suggest that at 14% plastic strain of the nanolayered pillars, the deformation was dominated by plasticity in the Cu nanolayers and elasticity or possibly a zero net plasticity (due to the possibility of annihilation of interface dislocations) in the Nb nanolayers.

The influence of high altitude, alpine origin of the forage and roughage-only diets on milk protein content and composition, plasmin activity and cheesemaking properties was investigated. There were four treatment groups, each consisting of six dairy cows in early to mid-lactation. Two groups were fed only with hay ad libitum either at 2000 m or at 400 m a.s.l. One group, kept in the lowlands, was pair-fed to the alpine-site group and another group received a mixed diet of silages, hay and concentrates. Two hay types, harvested either at the alpine site or in the lowlands, were offered to all cows fed with hay alone, following a change-over design in three periods each of 3 weeks. In the respective third week, milk was sampled at every milking. Hay of alpine origin significantly reduced milk protein, in particular whey proteins, which is why the casein number increased. κ-Casein proportion in total casein was reduced and its glycosylation was increased by the alpine hay. The apparent plasminogen-derived activity was reduced when alpine hay was given, but apparent plasmin activity and rennet coagulation properties of the milk were not affected by hay type. Independent of hay type, the high altitude group showed a significantly reduced milk protein content, lower glycosylation of κ-casein and impaired rennet coagulation properties. For several of the traits, the trend was the same in the pair-fed group. There was no effect of altitude on apparent plasmin activity. Hay-alone v. the mixed diet resulted initially in marked declines in milk protein content but did not impair cheesemaking properties. Thus the extensive diet without concentrates, typical of high-alpine conditions, contributed less to the overall effect of extensive alpine v. intensive lowland feeding systems than hay quality and altitude did. In conclusion, certain positive influences of the alpine sojourn of cows on cheese processing quality are overruled by the major adverse impact of lower milk protein content.

Construction cost estimators are confronted with the challenging task of estimating the cost of constructing one of a kind facilities. They must first recognize the design conditions of the facility design that are important (i.e., incur a cost) and then determine how the design conditions affect the cost of construction. Current product models of facility designs explicitly represent components, attributes of components, and relationships between components. These designer-focused product models do not represent many of the cost-driving features of building product models, such as penetrations and component similarity. Previous research efforts identify many of the different features that affect construction costs, but they do not provide a formal and general way for practitioners to represent the features they care about according to their preferences. This paper presents the formal ontology we developed to represent construction knowledge about the cost-driving features of building product models. The ontology formalizes three classes of features, defines the attributes and functions of each feature type, and represents the relationships between the features explicitly. The descriptive semantics of the model allow estimators to represent their varied preferences for naming features, specifying features that result from component intersections and the similarity of components, and grouping features that affect a specific construction domain. A software prototype that implements the ontology enables estimators to transform designer-focused product models into estimator-focused, feature-based product models. Our tests show that estimators are able to generate and maintain cost estimates more accurately, consistently, and expeditiously with feature-based product models than with industry standard product models.

3- and 7-hydroxyflavone and their acetic acid esters were tested against Cladosporium herbarum and Penicillium glabrum for antifungal activity. The effect of the hydroxylated flavones was relatively low whereas the ester derivatives were substantially more active.
