Many factors affect patient outcome after congenital heart surgery, including the complexity of the heart disease, pre-operative status, patient specific factors (prematurity, nutritional status and/or presence of comorbid conditions or genetic syndromes), and post-operative residual lesions. The Residual Lesion Score is a novel tool for assessing whether specific residual cardiac lesions after surgery have a measurable impact on outcome. The goal is to understand which residual lesions can be tolerated and which should be addressed prior to leaving the operating room. The Residual Lesion Score study is a large multicentre prospective study designed to evaluate the association of Residual Lesion Score to outcomes in infants undergoing surgery for CHD. This Pediatric Heart Network and National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute-funded study prospectively enrolled 1,149 infants undergoing 5 different congenital cardiac surgical repairs at 17 surgical centres. Given the contribution of echocardiographic measurements in assigning the Residual Lesion Score, the Residual Lesion Score study made use of a centralised core lab in addition to site review of all data. The data collection plan was designed with the added goal of collecting image quality information in a way that would permit us to improve our understanding of the reproducibility, variability, and feasibility of the echocardiographic measurements being made. There were significant challenges along the way, including the coordination, de-identification, storage, and interpretation of very large quantities of imaging data. This necessitated the development of new infrastructure and technology, as well as use of novel statistical methods. The study was successfully completed, but the size and complexity of the population being studied and the data being extracted required more technologic and human resources than expected which impacted the length and cost of conducting the study. This paper outlines the process of designing and executing this complex protocol, some of the barriers to implementation and lessons to be considered in the design of future studies.

Introduction: Results from observational studies suggest that smoking-related cues play a role in triggering relapse. Coping strategies are among the most commonly used cessation strategies, but little is known about how they aid quitting.

Aims: The aim of this pilot study was to evaluate the effect of a suite of selected coping techniques on alleviating cue-induced cravings.

Methods: Thirty-seven daily smokers (Intervention: 20; Control: 17) participated in two laboratory cue-reactivity sessions, separated by approximately one week, during which craving was assessed before and after exposure to smoking-related cues. Following the first session, participants in the Intervention Group were taught a suite of coping strategies. During the second session, participants in the Intervention Group were encouraged to use these strategies.

Results: Participants in the Intervention Group reported a slight decrease in craving following the acute exposure manipulation at the second session, compared to an increase in craving among participants in the Control Group. Intervention Group participants also reported a decrease in craving following prolonged exposure to the smoking cues (compared to an increase in craving among Control Group participants). In both cases, the difference between groups was more pronounced among smokers who responded to the cue-reactivity manipulation. The observed differences were not significant.

Conclusions: The results of this pilot study suggest that coping techniques may be beneficial in alleviating both the initial spike in craving observed following acute cue exposure, and aid recovery during prolonged exposure. These findings need to be replicated in a larger study.

Killer whales in the Eastern Canadian Arctic (ECA) prey on narwhal, beluga, bowhead whales and seals, while further south in the north-west Atlantic (NWA), killer whales off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador prey on both marine mammals and fish. Bulk and amino acid (AA) specific isotopic composition of dentinal collagen in teeth of 13 ECA/NWA killer whales were analysed to assess the degree, if any, of dietary specialization of killer whales across the region. Dentine was sampled from within annual growth layer groups (GLGs) to construct chronological profiles of stable nitrogen (δ15N) and carbon (δ13C) isotopic compositions for individual whales spanning 3–25 years. Interannual isotopic variation across GLGs was less than that among individuals, and median bulk δ15N values differed by up to 5‰ among individuals. Significant correlation between bulk δ15N values and baseline (source AA) δ15N values indicates much of the observed isotopic variation among individuals reflects foraging within isotopically distinct food webs, rather than diet differences. This interpretation is supported by consistent differences in bulk δ13C values between the two individuals with lowest source AA δ15N values and the remaining whales. After accounting for baseline isotopic variation, comparable δ15N values among individuals indicates similar trophic-level diet, although uncertainties in relative trophic 15N enrichment of individual AAs currently limits trophic position estimates for top consumers. Further research is required to clarify seasonal movement patterns and possible diet shifts of ECA/NWA killer whales to better define their role in marine ecosystems across the region.

We give an overview of the science case for spectroscopy of resolved stellar populations beyond the Local Group with the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT). In particular, we present science simulations undertaken as part of the EAGLE Phase A design study for a multi–integral-field-unit, near-infrared spectrograph. EAGLE will exploit the unprecedented primary aperture of the E-ELT to deliver AO-corrected spectroscopy across a large (38.5 arcmin2) field, truly revolutionising our view of stellar populations in the Local Volume.

A range of mineral content values and organization of the collagen and mineral phases are possible contributors to the significant variance demonstrated within the nanomechanical behavior of mineralized tissues. A combined approach using nanoindentation, to assess nanomechanical behavior, and X-ray diffraction, for analysis of crystallinity and composition, were used to investigate a range of modern and fossilized bone samples. This work provides new insight into the functional role of organization and composition of the mineral phase within heterogeneous, mineralized materials of biological origin. While the predominant influence on nanomechanical behavior is made by mineral volume fraction, the crystallinity was shown to play a significant role in the nanomechanical behavior of modern and fossilized bone samples. The interplay between material structure and function will ultimately help to elucidate the relative contributions of various factors to nanomechanical behavior and lead to improved development of biomimetic materials.

In the context of the pursuit of a dilute magnetic semiconductor for spintronic applications, a set of GaMnN samples with varying Mn concentration and Si or Mg co-doping was investigated by optical and electron spin resonance spectroscopy. The results clearly demonstrate how the charge state of Mn is changed between 2+, 3+ and 4+ by Mg and Si co-doping. For p-type GaMnN we show that the introduction of the Mn3+/4+ donor can be compensated by Mg co-doping lowering the Fermi energy below the Mn3+/4+ level. While our results are in agreement with the hypothesis that the infrared photoluminescence appearing in GaMnN upon Mg doping originates from Mn4+, an unambiguous proof is still to be presented. Under this assumption, our measurements show that the Mn4+ center must be excited via an extra-center process at 2.54 eV.

In the context of ferromagnetic spin-coupling in dilute magnetic semiconductors, we present optical investigations on Mg co-doped GaMnN and Fe doped GaN. A complex luminescence feature occurring in Mg co-doped GaMnN around 1 eV was previously attributed to the internal 4T2(F)—4T1(F) transition of Mn4+ involved in different complexes. Selective excitation studies indicate the presence of at least three different complexes. Photoluminescence excitation spectra suggest that the internal Mn3+ transition may represent an excitation mechanism. Magneto photoluminescence spectra indicate equal g values for the ground and excited state. Low temperature infrared absorption spectra of Fe doped GaN allow to unambiguously establish the electronic structure of the Fe2+ center in GaN. Our results suggest that the Fe2+(5T2) state is stabilized against Jahn-Teller coupling by the reduced site-symmetry of the hexagonal lattice.

Transition metal-doped ZnO bulk crystals and thin films have been investigated to determine the effects of transition metal incorporation on optical, magnetic, and structural properties of ZnO. A modified melt growth technique was used to grow bulk Zn1-xMnxO, Zn1-xCoxO, and Zn1-xFexO. Optical transmission measurements show an apparent shift in absorption edge with increasing transition metal incorporation. Raman spectroscopy also shows increasing lattice disorder with increasing transition metal concentration. ZnO thin films doped with Ni, Co, and Gd were grown by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). While the Co-doped thin films showed antiferromagnetic behavior, magnetic hysteresis was observed in the Ni-doped and Gd-doped thin films. Structural quality was verified with X-ray diffraction (XRD), and optical properties were investigated using room temperature photoluminescence (PL) and optical transmission measurements. Properties of ZnO:TM bulk crystals and thin films are compared and used to discuss possible origins of ferromagnetism in these materials.

Bone plays a key role in the paleontological and archeological records and can provide insight into the biology, ecology and the environment of ancient vertebrates. Examination of bone at the tissue level reveals a definitive relationship between nanomechanical properties and the local organic content, mineral content, and microstructural organization. However, it is unclear as to how these properties change following fossilization, or diagenesis, where the organic phase is rapidly removed and the remaining mineral phase is reinforced by the deposition of apatites, calcites, and other minerals. While the process of diagenesis is poorly understood, its outcome clearly results in the potential for dramatic alteration of the mechanical response of biological tissues. In this study, fossilized specimens of mammalian long bones, collected from Colorado and Wyoming, were studied for mechanical variations. Nanoindentation performed in both longitudinal and transverse directions revealed preservation of bone's natural anisotropy as transverse modulus values were consistently smaller than longitudinal values. Additionally modulus values of fossilized bone from 35.0 to 89.1 GPa increased linearly with logarithm of the sample's age. Future studies will aim to clarify what mechanical and material elements of bone are retained during diagenesis as bone becomes part of the geologic milieu.

The incorporation of transition metals in GaN has long been of interest in spintronics due to theoretical predictions of room temperature ferromagnetism in these materials. However, the mechanism of the observed ferromagnetism of the nitride-based DMS is still controversial, and may originate from a carrier-mediated, defect-related or nanoscale clustering mechanism. In this work, we present a comparative study of the incorporation of various transition metals and their effect on the optical, structural, and magnetic properties of GaN. Metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) has been employed to produce epitaxial films of varying thickness and manganese and iron doping using bis-cyclopentyldienyl(magnanese,iron) as the transition metal sources. High-resolution X-ray diffraction reveals no secondary phases under optimized growth conditions. Magnetic hysteresis is observed at room temperature in both GaMnN and GaFeN, though the strength of the magnetic ordering is roughly an order of magnitude weaker in the Fe-alloyed samples. Increasing Mn concentrations significantly affect long-range lattice ordering, and the observation of local vibrational modes (LVMs) supports the formation of nitrogen vacancies, even under optimized MOCVD growth conditions. Such vacancies form shallow donor complexes and thus contribute to self-compensation. A disorder-induced mode at 300 cm−1 and a LVM due to vacancies at 669 cm-1 were revealed by Raman spectroscopy.

The growth of Ga1-xMnxN and Ga1-xFexN nanostructures was carried out by MOCVD. Introduction of transition metals (TM) Mn and Fe in GaN nanostructures enhanced the nucleation of the nanostructures resulting in reduced lateral dimensions and increased nanostructure density. The Ga1-xMnxN nanostructures showed hysteresis behavior at 5K. Room temperature ferromagnetism was obtained in the Ga1-xFexN nanostructures unlike its bulk counterpart. This paper presents the growth and magnetization study of Ga1-xTMxN nanostructures. These structures could be used to enhance the efficiency of spintronic devices.
