Numerous studies have investigated the ligand-promoted dissolution of Fe (oxyhydr)oxides. In natural environments, inorganic ligands can compete with organic ligands for surface sites on (oxyhydr)oxides which may influence dissolution rates. Published research of this interaction and its effect on the dissolution of (oxyhydr)oxides is rare. The objective of the present study was to examine the extent to which silica, as a naturally occurring competitive ligand added in the form of silicic acid, impacts the oxalate-promoted dissolution of the common soil Fe (oxyhydr)oxide goethite. Sorbed silica reduced the oxalate-promoted dissolution rate of goethite at all surface coverages investigated. As initial silica solution concentrations increased from 0.50 mM to 5.0 mM, relatively little change in the dissolution rate was observed. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectra indicated that, as silica-surface coverages increased, the silica underwent polymerization on the goethite surface. Initially, silicate was associated with surface functional groups, but as polymerization occurred some of the silica appeared to desorb from the goethite surface without being released into the bulk solution, suggesting that silica polymers formed discrete islands or surface clusters that grew away from the goethite surface rather than expanding epitaxially across the surface. Minimal changes were observed in the quantity of reactive goethite surface, which is responsible for the observed dissolution rates, as silica-surface coverages increased.

We study when CEOs with legal expertise are valuable for firms. In general, lawyer CEOs are negatively associated with frequency and severity in employment civil rights, contract, labor, personal injury, and securities litigation. This effect is partly induced by the CEO’s management of litigation risk and reduction in other risky policies. Lawyer CEOs are further associated with an increase in gatekeepers providing additional legal oversight and a decrease in innovative activities with high litigation risk. Lawyer CEOs are more valuable during periods of enhanced compliance requirements and regulatory pressure and in industries with high litigation risk or better growth opportunities.

Latinos, especially those who recently immigrated, face many obstacles in navigating the political and judicial environment in the United States. While prior scholarship suggests that racial minorities are more likely to be stopped by law enforcement for traffic violations and face harsher penalties for major crimes, little research has explored whether a defendant’s characteristics are influential in routine traffic court cases. Using an original database, this paper examines disparate treatment in speeding ticket reductions. The results indicate that Latino defendants are less likely to receive meaningful reductions to their charges. However, attorney representation greatly lessens the likelihood of disparate treatment for Latino drivers. As traffic court proceedings often represent the only interaction most people have with the judicial system, these findings have significant implications for racial equality, the administration of justice, attorney representation, and public opinion of the judiciary.

Background: In the treatment of bloodstream infections, the identification of the causal pathogen, and the evaluation of its susceptibility to antibiotics, often serve as the rate-limiting steps of the patient’s hospital stay. The GenMark Dx ePlex blood culture identification gram-positive (BCID-GP) panel aims to alleviate this bottleneck, thereby reducing the risk of severe complications and the spread of resistance, using electrowetting technology to detect the most common causes of GP bacteremia (20 targets) and 4 antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes. We hypothesized that implementation of the ePlex BCID-GP panel would improve antimicrobial choice and de-escalation where appropriate. Methods: A mixed blinded and unblinded study was conducted to assess the effect of the BCID-GP panel on the outcomes and antibiotic stewardship of GP bacteremic patients before ePlex results were made clinically available (before implementation, N = 73) and once they accompanied the standard-of-care work-up (after implementation, N = 82). Differences in time to different benchmarks between the 2 modalities and the effect on patient outcomes were analyzed using null-hypothesis significance testing. Results: During the study, the BCID-GP panel identified 63 (42%) Staphylococcus epidermidis isolates, 31 (21%) Staphylococcus spp, 24 (16%) Staphylococcus aureus isolates, 12 (8%) Streptococcus spp, and 7 (5%) Enterococcus spp, and results were similar in the pre- and postimplementation groups (P = .13). The panel saved an average of 32.0 ± 24.2 hours in pathogen identification over standard-of-care methods, with no statistical difference made by the clinical availability of the data (Table 1). In terms of susceptibility testing, the panel saved an average of 70.1 ± 58.2 hours but with less unity between the 2 cohorts (P = .005). Of the 66 cases with follow-up, identification via ePlex indicated an escalation of therapy in 20 (30%) and a narrowing of coverage in 31 (47%). In patients identified to have Staphylococcus aureus, BCID-GP could change antimicrobial therapy in 79%; the need for escalation of antibiotics was identified in 58% of cases. In patients with Staphylococcus epidermidis bacteremia, implementation of BCID-GP panel could have resulted in de-escalation of antimicrobial therapy in 67% of patients. The implementation of the BCID-GP panel was correlated with no significant change of in-hospital mortality (P = .72) but was correlated with a significantly decreased death-censored total length of stay (LOS) (P < .001) and LOS after culture (P = .001). Conclusions: Our study has demonstrated that nonculture identification of bacteria and susceptibility can result in major improvements in antimicrobial therapy in patients, particularly those with contaminants identified.

Early in the COVID-19 pandemic, the World Health Organization stressed the importance of daily clinical assessments of infected patients, yet current approaches frequently consider cross-sectional timepoints, cumulative summary measures, or time-to-event analyses. Statistical methods are available that make use of the rich information content of longitudinal assessments. We demonstrate the use of a multistate transition model to assess the dynamic nature of COVID-19-associated critical illness using daily evaluations of COVID-19 patients from 9 academic hospitals. We describe the accessibility and utility of methods that consider the clinical trajectory of critically ill COVID-19 patients.

Given the relatively small industry scale of cow-calf operations in New York to other regions of the country, little is known about differences in determinant values for feeder cattle. Using auction prices and quality characteristics over 7 years, differences in market, lot, and quality parameters suggest opportunities for improved marketing performance. A delta profit model is constructed to inform timing of marketing decisions for producers. The results indicate a relatively high potential for producers to increase farm returns by delaying sales of lighter-weight feeder cattle from the fall to spring auction months, given sufficient rates of gain and reasonable overwintering costs.

Archaeologists have long subjected Clovis megafauna kill/scavenge sites to the highest level of scrutiny. In 1987, a Columbian mammoth (Mammuthus columbi) was found in spatial association with a small artifact assemblage in Converse County, Wyoming. However, due to the small tool assemblage, limited nature of the excavations, and questions about the security of the association between the artifacts and mammoth remains, the site was never included in summaries of human-killed/scavenged megafauna in North America. Here we present the results of four field seasons of new excavations at the La Prele Mammoth site that confirm the presence of an associated cultural occupation based on geologic context, artifact attributes, spatial distributions, protein residue analysis, and lithic microwear analysis. This new work identified a more extensive cultural occupation including the presence of multiple discrete artifact clusters in close proximity to the mammoth bone bed. This study confirms the presence of a second Clovis mammoth kill/scavenge site in Wyoming and shows the value in revisiting proposed terminal Pleistocene kill/scavenge sites.

Background: Adults are at risk of being exposed to influenza from many sources. Healthcare personnel (HCP) have the additional risk of being exposed to ill patients.

Diverse theoretical perspectives suggest that place plays an important role in human behavior. One recent perspective proposes that habitual and recursive use of places among humans may be an emergent property of obligate tool use by our species. In this view, the costs of tool use are reduced by preferential occupation of previously occupied places where cultural materials have been discarded. Here we use the model to generate five predictions for ethnographic mobility patterns. We then test the predictions against observations made during one month of coresidence with a residentially mobile Dukha family in the Mongolian Taiga. We show that (1) there is a strong tendency to occupy previously used camps, (2) previously deposited materials are habitually recycled, (3) reoccupation of places transcends kinship, (4) occupational hiatuses can span decades or longer, and (5) the distribution of occupation intensity among camps is highly skewed such that most camps are not intensively reoccupied whereas a few camps experience extremely high reoccupation intensity. These findings complement previous archaeological findings and support the conclusion that the constructed dimensions of human habitats exert a strong influence on mobility patterns in mobile societies.

OBJECTIVES/SPECIFIC AIMS: Traditional clinical trials typically enroll a homogenous population to test the efficacy of an intervention. Pragmatic trials deliberately enroll a more diverse population to enhance generalizability, but doing so may increase heterogeneity of treatment effect among subpopulations. For example, the effect of a treatment on an outcome may vary based on patients’ sex, comorbidities, or baseline risk of experiencing the outcome. We hypothesized that heterogeneity of treatment effect by baseline risk for the outcome could be demonstrated in a large pragmatic clinical trial. METHODS/STUDY POPULATION: We performed a prespecified secondary analysis of a recent pragmatic trial comparing balanced crystalloids Versus 0.9% saline among critically ill adults. The primary endpoint of the trial was major adverse kidney events within 30 days of ICU admission, censored at hospital discharge (MAKE30). MAKE30 is a composite outcome of all-cause mortality, new renal replacement therapy, or persistent renal dysfunction. Using a previously published model with high predictive accuracy for MAKE30 (area under the curve=0.903), we calculated the baseline risk of MAKE30 for all trial participants. We then developed a logistic regression model for MAKE30 with independent covariates of fluid group assignment, baseline risk of MAKE30 as a nonlinear continuous variable, and the interaction between group assignment and MAKE30 baseline risk. RESULTS/ANTICIPATED RESULTS: Among 15,802 patients from 5 intensive care units enrolled in the original trial, 126 had missing variables for predicted risk of MAKE30. Mean predicted risk of MAKE30 among all patients was 15.4%; median was 4.4% (interquartile range 2.2%–17.1%). Predicted risk of MAKE30 did not significantly differ between groups (p=0.61 by Mann-Whitney U-test). The incidence of MAKE30 in the trial was 14.9%, and the prediction model was well-calibrated overall (AUC=0.891). In a logistic regression model examining the interaction between group assignment and predicted risk of MAKE30, group assignment significantly affected MAKE30 (odds ratio saline:balanced 1.13, 95% CI: 1.02–1.27, p=0.02), but we observed no interaction between the effect of group assignment on MAKE30 and patients’ predicted risk of MAKE30 at baseline (p=0.66 for interaction term). DISCUSSION/SIGNIFICANCE OF IMPACT: In a large pragmatic trial demonstrating a significant difference in the primary outcome of MAKE30 between balanced crystalloids and saline, a previously published model accurately predicted MAKE30 using baseline factors. However, contrary to our hypothesis, the baseline risk of MAKE30 did not modify the effect of fluid group on the observed incidence of MAKE30. Our analysis could not account for unmeasured confounders and may be underpowered to detect a significant interaction. Our findings suggest that the impact of balanced crystalloids versus normal saline on renal outcomes in critically patients is consistent across all levels of risk.

We have been intensely monitoring photometric variability in proto-planetary nebulae (PPNe) over the past 25 years and radial velocity variability over the past ten years. Pulsational variability has been obvious, in both the light and velocity, although the resulting curves are complex, with multiple periods and varying amplitudes. Observed periods range from 25 to 160 days, and the periods and amplitudes reveal evolutionary trends. We will present our observational results to date for approximately 30 PPNe, and discuss these results, including the search for period changes that might help constrain post-AGB evolutionary timescales.

Hill (Twin Research and Human Genetics, Vol. 21, 2018, 84–88) presented a critique of our recently published paper in Cell Reports entitled ‘Large-Scale Cognitive GWAS Meta-Analysis Reveals Tissue-Specific Neural Expression and Potential Nootropic Drug Targets’ (Lam et al., Cell Reports, Vol. 21, 2017, 2597–2613). Specifically, Hill offered several interrelated comments suggesting potential problems with our use of a new analytic method called Multi-Trait Analysis of GWAS (MTAG) (Turley et al., Nature Genetics, Vol. 50, 2018, 229–237). In this brief article, we respond to each of these concerns. Using empirical data, we conclude that our MTAG results do not suffer from ‘inflation in the FDR [false discovery rate]’, as suggested by Hill (Twin Research and Human Genetics, Vol. 21, 2018, 84–88), and are not ‘more relevant to the genetic contributions to education than they are to the genetic contributions to intelligence’.
