The UK's services for adult attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are in crisis, with demand outstripping capacity and waiting times reaching unprecedented lengths. Recognition of and treatments for ADHD have expanded over the past two decades, increasing clinical demand. This issue has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite an increase in specialist services, resource allocation has not kept pace, leading to extended waiting times. Underfunding has encouraged growth in independent providers, leading to fragmentation of service provision. Treatment delays carry a human and financial cost, imposing a burden on health, social care and the criminal justice system. A rethink of service procurement and delivery is needed, with multiple solutions on the table, including increasing funding, improving system efficiency, altering the service provision model and clinical prioritisation. However, the success of these solutions hinges on fiscal capacity and workforce issues.

An area of great interest in Depression and Mood Disorder research has been highlighted by the Mental Health Priority Area of the Wellcome Trust (UK), namely sleep and circadian rhythm disturbances (SCRD). Wellcome has set out the background logic for this focus and clear research priorities (Wellcome Trust, 2022), leading to the funding of a series of international projects. This focus is a particularly good fit with the international agenda for development of more effective and scalable strategies for prevention, early intervention and secondary prevention of illness relapse, progression and downstream physical illnesses for adolescent-onset anxiety, depressive and psychotic disorders (Hickie et al., 2019).

We conclude that the extinct polar forests of Antarctica deserve recognition as a distinct biome - the ‘Austral Polar Forest Biome’ - rather than being regarded as analogous to modern rainforest.

Morpho-Butterfly inspired lamella structures were fabricated to make a multivariable optical sensor for measuring percent level concentrations of H2 and CO in a high temperature, zero-O2 environment. The SiO2 and Si3N4 3D structures were covered with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and cerium IV dioxide (CeO2) and exposed to varying concentrations of H2 and CO at 300°C. Experiments with AuNP sizes with an average diameter of 11 ± 3 nm and 3 ± 0.5 nm (larger and small AuNPs, respectively) showed that the larger AuNPs had a stronger response to the same concentrations of H2 and CO with less CO saturation and baseline drift. Further testing in the presence of 1% hydrocarbons (HCs) as an interfering gas showed excellent response to up to 17% H2 and CO in a zero-O2 environment with changes in reflected intensity of -13.1 ± 0.4% for H2 and -5.8 ± 0.3% for CO. The presence of HCs did not induce any baseline drift, with the total amount of drift being less than 0.5% over 13 hours of testing at 300°C.

Diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of vector-borne disease (VBD) in pets is one cornerstone of companion animal practices. Veterinarians are facing new challenges associated with the emergence, reemergence, and rising incidence of VBD, including heartworm disease, Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, and ehrlichiosis. Increases in the observed prevalence of these diseases have been attributed to a multitude of factors, including diagnostic tests with improved sensitivity, expanded annual testing practices, climatologic and ecological changes enhancing vector survival and expansion, emergence or recognition of novel pathogens, and increased movement of pets as travel companions. Veterinarians have the additional responsibility of providing information about zoonotic pathogen transmission from pets, especially to vulnerable human populations: the immunocompromised, children, and the elderly. Hindering efforts to protect pets and people is the dynamic and ever-changing nature of VBD prevalence and distribution. To address this deficit in understanding, the Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC) began efforts to annually forecast VBD prevalence in 2011. These forecasts provide veterinarians and pet owners with expected disease prevalence in advance of potential changes. This review summarizes the fidelity of VBD forecasts and illustrates the practical use of CAPC pathogen prevalence maps and forecast data in the practice of veterinary medicine and client education.

A new protocol has been devised for determining elastic properties of natural biocomposites in the form of bivalve shells under wet and dry conditions. Four-point bending on shell slices of Mytilus edulis, Ensis siliqua, and Pecten maximus give generally lower and more reliable values of Young’s modulus, E, than those in the literature from three-point bending, due to the more even distribution of strain. Finite element analysis of the prismatic microstructure of Pinna nobilis, obtained by X-ray tomography, shows that values of E ≈ 20 GPa can be understood in terms of the real microstructure containing a small proportion of organic matrix phase with E ≈ 1 GPa and a dominant proportion of calcite with E ≈ 90 GPa. Higher values of E obtained by nanoindentation give results which are biased toward the properties of the carbonate phase rather than of the biocomposite as a whole.

A natural olivenite single crystal was submitted to in situ high-temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction from room temperature (RT) to 500°C. Unit-cell parameters were measured at regular intervals of 25°C, and complete datasets collected at T = 25, 50, 100, 150, 200, 250, 300, 400 and 500°C. Evolution of unit-cell parameters and structure refinements indicates that olivenite undergoes a structural phase transition from P21/n to Pnnm at ~200°C, and eventually becomes isostructural with the other members of the olivenite-mineral group. Volume expansion with temperature is larger in the monoclinic phase – where it follows a non-linear trend – than in the orthorhombic one. Axial and volume expansion coefficients of the orthorhombic olivenite phase are positive and linear and similar to those of the other Cu-bearing member of the mineral family, namely libethenite, but rather different from those of the Zn-analogue arsenate adamite.

Distortion of Cu polyhedra is quite high in the olivenite monoclinic phase at RT and goes towards a relative regularization with increasing T until the phase transition occurs. In the orthorhombic phase, no significant variation of the polyhedral distortion parameters is observed with increasing temperature, and maximum expansion is along the b direction and governed by corner-sharing. Landau potential provides a good representation of the macroscopic changes associated with the phase transition, coupling between the strains and the order parameter is responsible for the nearly tricritical character of the transition.

Introduction: The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) hospital implemented an inpatient opt-out smoking-cessation service where smokers received a mandatory smoking-cessation consult and phone follow-up within 1-month post-discharge.

Aim: To examine predictors of patients who opted-out of bedside counselling or follow-up phone calls.

Methods: Eligible adult cigarette smokers admitted to the MUSC hospital were enrolled in the programme. Opting-out of bedside consult or follow-up calls were assessed separately using log-linear modelling where predictors included patient demographics, length of hospitalisation, insurance type, smoking history, and motivation/confidence to quit.

Results: Of the 38,758 admitted patients (February 2014–May 2015), 6,684 reported currently smoking and were automatically referred to bedside-consult. Approximately 26% of smokers made contact with the counselor, most of whom (83%) accepted the consult. Amongst patients eligible for post-discharge follow-up (n = 3485), 49% responded to the calls. Those who opted-out of the bedside-consult were mostly males (RR = 1.29). Those who did not respond to follow-up calls were younger age (RR = 1.33), with Medicaid/no insurance (RR = 1.17), and had not received a bedside consult (RR = 1.32).

Conclusions: An opt-out smoking-cessation programme was feasible and acceptable to most patients and was able to reach 65% of eligible smokers; 17% opted-out of bedside counselling; <1% asked to be removed from further phone calls.

A novel and previously unreported, high temperature solid–liquid–solid (SLS) silica nanowire (NW) growth mode has been observed and investigated. In this mode, SLS NW nucleation and subsequent growth was uniquely promoted by—and coupled to—the formation of thermally etched pyramidal pits in the Si substrate that formed during a high temperature anneal phase before the onset of SLS NW formation. The silicon oxide-mediated thermal pit formation process enhanced Si transport to Au–Si alloy droplets directly adjacent to the pyramidal pits. Consequently, SLS NW nucleation and growth was preferentially promoted at the pit edges. The promotion of SLS NW growth by the pyramidal pits resulted in the observation of SLS NW “blooms” at the pit locations. Subsequent NW growth, occurring both at the pit sites and from Au–Si alloy droplets distributed across the planar surfaces of the Si wafer, eventually occluded the pits. This newly observed process is termed as “thermal pit-assisted growth.”

Speakers often anticipate how recipients will interpret their utterances. If they wish some other, less obvious interpretation, they may ‘mark’ their utterance (e.g. with special intonations or facial expressions). We investigated whether two- and three-year-olds recognize when adults mark a non-verbal communicative act – in this case a pointing gesture – as special, and so search for a not-so-obvious referent. We set up the context of cleaning up and then pointed to an object. Three-year-olds inferred that the adult intended the pointing gesture to indicate that object, and so cleaned it up. However, when the adult marked her pointing gesture (with exaggerated facial expression) they took the object's hidden contents or a hidden aspect of it as the intended referent. Two-year-olds' appreciation of such marking was less clear-cut. These results demonstrate that markedness is not just a linguistic phenomenon, but rather something concerning the pragmatics of intentional communication more generally.

We present a model of learning and policy choice across governments. Governments choose policies with known ideological positions but initially unknown valence benefits, possibly learning about those benefits between the model's two periods. There are two variants of the model; in one, governments only learn from their own experiences, whereas in the other they learn from one another's experiments. Based on similarities between these two versions, we illustrate that much accepted scholarly evidence of policy diffusion could simply have arisen through independent actions by governments that only learn from their own experiences. However, differences between the game-theoretic and decision-theoretic models point the way to future empirical tests that discern learning-based policy diffusion from independent policy adoptions.

Twin boundary motion is the mechanism that drives the plastic deformation in magnetic shape memory alloys (MSMAs), and is largely dependent on the twin microstructure of the MSMA. The twin microstructure is established during the martensitic transformation, and can be influenced through thermo-magneto-mechanical training. For self-accommodated and ineffectively trained martensite, twin thickness and magnetic-field-induced strain (MFIS) are very small. For effectively trained crystals, a single crystallographic domain may comprise the entire sample and MFIS reaches the theoretical limit. In this paper, a numerical simulation is presented describing the twin microstructures and twin boundary motion of self-accommodated martensite using disclinations and disconnections (twinning dislocations). Disclinations are line defects such as dislocations, however with a rotational displacement field. A quadrupole solution was chosen to approximate the defect structure where two quadrupoles represent an elementary twin double layer unit. In the simulation, the twin boundary was inclined to the twinning plane which required the introduction of twinning disconnections, which are line defects with a stress field similar to dislocations. The shear stress - shear strain properties of self-accommodated martensite were analyzed numerically for different initial configurations of the twin boundary (i.e. for different initial positions of the disconnections). The shear stress - shear strain curve was found to be sensitive to the initial configuration of disconnections. If the disconnections are very close to boundaries of hierarchically higher twins – such as is the case for self-accommodated martensite, there is a threshold stress for twin-boundary motion. If the disconnections are spread out along the twin boundary, twinning occurs at much lower stress.
