It is common wisdom that collisionless shocks become non-planar and non-stationary at sufficiently high Mach numbers. Whatever the shock structure, the upstream and downstream fluxes of the mass, momentum and energy should be equal. At low Mach numbers, these conservation laws are satisfied when the shock front is planar and stationary. When this becomes impossible, inhomogeneity and time dependence, presumably in the form of rippling, develop. In this study, we show that the shock structure changes as a kind of ‘phase transition’ when the Mach number is increased while other shock parameters are kept constant.

A collisionless shock structure results from the nonlinear interaction between charged particles and electromagnetic fields. Yet, a collisionless shock is globally governed by the mass, momentum and energy conservation requirements. A stable shock structure must ensure that the fluxes of the conserved quantities are constant on average, and, therefore, is determined by this necessity. Here, we study an observed high upstream temperature high Mach number shock and show that the conservation laws cannot be fulfilled unless the shock is spatially inhomogeneous along the shock front and time-dependent.

Electron heating and acceleration in collisionless shocks is a long-standing problem. Rapid isotropization of heated electrons cannot be explained solely by the cross-shock potential. In addition, the macroscopic cross-shock potential prevents efficient reflection and injection into the diffusive acceleration regime. Recent observations have shown that small-scale electric fields are present in the shock front, together with the large-scale cross-shock potential. These small-scale fields have been found also in the upstream and downstream regions. Electron heating in shocks is produced by the combined action of the large- and small-scale fields. The large-scale potential determines the energy transferred to the electrons. The small-scale electrostatic fields scatter electrons. Here we study the scattering of electrons on the typical waveforms, namely solitary bipolar spikes and wavepackets. The main effect is the generation of backstreaming electrons with large pitch angles. It is found that wavepackets are more efficient in electron reflection in the interaction of electrons both with a single spike and with multiple spikes.

The structure of a collisionless shock affects ion motion in the shock front and is affected by the formed ion distribution. In high-Mach-number shocks, a significant fraction of incident ions are reflected by the macroscopic electric and magnetic fields in the shock front. Ions are non-specularly reflected by the combined electric deceleration and magnetic deflection. Here, a first analytical description of the non-specular reflection is presented. The contribution of the increasing magnetic field is evaluated and shown to enhance reflection. The distribution of non-specularly reflected ions ahead of the ramp is calculated and their velocities at the re-entry to the shock are found numerically. Dependence on the angle between the shock normal and the upstream magnetic field vector is illustrated.

In typical heliospheric collisionless shocks most of the mass, momentum and energy are carried by ions. Therefore, the shock structure should be most affected by ions. With the increase of the Mach number, ion reflection becomes more and more important, and reflected ions participate in shaping the shock profile. Ion reflection at the collisionless shock is a non-local process: the reflected–transmitted ions re-enter the shock front far from the reflection point. The direction and the magnitude of this shift depend on the shock angle. The distance between the reflection point and the re-entry point is of the order of the upstream ion convective gyroradius and exceeds the shock width. The non-locality of ion reflection may have implications for shock rippling since reflected ions may carry perturbations along the shock front.

A collisionless shock is a self-organized structure where fields and particle distributions are mutually adjusted to ensure a stable mass, momentum and energy transfer from the upstream to the downstream region. This adjustment may involve rippling, reformation or whatever else is needed to maintain the shock. The fields inside the shock front are produced due to the motion of charged particles, which is in turn governed by the fields. The overshoot arises due to the deceleration of the ion flow by the increasing magnetic field, so that the drop of the dynamic pressure should be compensated by the increase of the magnetic pressure. The role of the overshoot is to regulate ion reflection, thus properly adjusting the downstream ion temperature and kinetic pressure and also speeding up the collisionless relaxation and reducing the anisotropy of the eventually gyrotropized distributions.

Ion heating in collisionless shocks is non-adiabatic and efficient. The amount of heating and the downstream distributions depend on the shock parameters and on the incident ion distribution. The number of reflected ions and their distribution depend on the detailed shape of the tail of the distribution. In supercritical shocks the reflected ion contribution is significant. Kappa distributed ions are heated more strongly and have a larger fraction of reflected ions than Maxwellian distributed ions with the same upstream temperature and the same shock parameters. For kappa distributions the phase space dips are shallower.

Collisionless shocks undergo structural changes with the increase of Mach number. Observations and numerical simulations indicate development of time-dependent rippling. It is not known at present what causes the rippling. However, effects of such rippling on the field pattern and ion motion and distributions can be studied without precise knowledge of the causes and detailed shape. It is shown that deviations of the normal component of the magnetic field from the constant value indicate certain spatial dependence of the rippling. Deviations of the motional electric field from the constant value indicate time dependence. It is argued that whistler waves should propagate towards upstream and downstream regions from the rippled ramp. It is shown that the downstream pattern of the fields and ion distributions should follow the rippling pattern, while collisionless relaxation should be faster than in the stationary planar case.

Collisionless shocks efficiently convert the energy of the directed ion flow into their thermal energy. Ion distributions change drastically at the magnetized shock crossing. Even in the absence of collisions, ion dynamics within the shock front is non-integrable and gyrophase dependent. The downstream distributions just behind the shock are not gyrotropic but become so quickly due to the kinematic gyrophase mixing even in laminar shocks. During the gyrotropization all information about gyrophases is lost. Here we develop a mapping of upstream and downstream gyrotropic distributions in terms of scattering probabilities at the shock front. An analytical expression for the probability is derived for directly transmitted ions in the narrow shock approximation. The dependence of the probability on the magnetic compression and the cross-shock potential is demonstrated.

Ion motion in a collisionless shock front is affected by macroscopic large-scale weakly varying and microscopic small-scale fast varying magnetic and electric fields. With the increase of the Mach number the role of the microscopic field is expected to become progressively more important. Using a combination of hybrid simulations and test particle analysis, we show that in moderately supercritical shocks macroscopic fields play the main role in ion motion across the shock. Pressure balance across the shock is only weakly broken and non-stationarity is related to the deviations from the total pressure from the constant value.

The structure of a whistler precursor in a quasi-perpendicular shock is studied within two-fluid approach in one-dimensional case. The complete set of equations is reduced to the KdV equation, if no dissipation is included. With a phenomenological resistive dissipation the structure is described with the KdV–Burgers equation. The shock profile is intrinsically time dependent. For sufficiently strong dissipation, temporal evolution of a steepening profile results in generation of a stationary decaying whistler ahead of the shock front. With the decrease of the dissipation parameter, whistler wave trains begin to detach and propagate toward the upstream and the ramp is weakly time dependent. In the weakly dissipative regime the shock front experiences reformation.

The early gas and dust protosolar nebula of the solar composition is considered analytically. A simultaneous formation of the sun and all the planets around it ($\approx 5 \times 10^9$ yr ago) through a local gravitational Jeans-type instability of small-amplitude gravity perturbations in the nebula disk is suggested. It is shown that a collective process, forming the basis of the disk instability hypothesis, solves with surprising simplicity the two main problems of the dynamical characteristics of the system, which are associated with its observed spacing and orbital momentum distribution, namely, Bode's law on planet spacing and the concentration of angular momentum in the planets and mass in the sun. Besides, the analysis is found to imply the existence of new planets or other Kuiper-type belts of comets at mean distances from the sun of 87 AU, 151 AU, 261 AU, 452 AU, 781 AU (Mercury, Venus, $\ldots$, Asteroid belt, $\ldots$, Neptune, Kuiper belt, new planets or other Kuiper-type belts).To search for other articles by the author(s) go to: http://adsabs.harvard.edu/abstract_service.html

The kinetic theory is used to study the evolution of the self-gravitating disk of planetesimals. The effects of frequent collisions between planetesimals are taken into account by using a Krook integral in the Boltzmann kinetic equation. It is shown that as a result of an aperiodic collision-dissipative instability of small gravity disturbances the disk is subdivided into numerous dense fragments. These can eventually condense into the planetary sequence.

A self-consistent system of the Boltzmann equation and the Poisson equation is used to study the dynamical evolution of Saturn's main A, B, and C rings. The theory, as applied to the Saturnian ring system, predicts for several features, such as numerous irregular density wakes, with size and spacing between them of the order 4πρ ≈ 2πh, where ρ is the mean epicycle radius of the particle and h is the typical thickness of the system under study. In Saturn's rings, ρ ≲ 10 m. Computer N-body experiments are desribed which test the validities of the theory. Use of the 112-processor SGI Origin 2000 supercomputer is enabled us to make long runs using a large number of particles in the direct simulation code and thus simulate phenomena not previously studied numerically. We predict that forthcoming in 2004 Cassini spacecraft high-resolution images will reveal this recurrent fine-scale ∼ 100 m or so structure in low and moderately high optical depth regions of the rings.
