Background: Group A Streptococcus (GAS; Streptococcus pyogenes) is an important human pathogen that can cause life-threatening invasive disease, ranging from skin/soft tissue infections to infective endocarditis. In the fall of 2022, the Center for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) issued an alert due to a global increase in invasive GAS infections, particularly among children and adults with co-morbidities. An increase in invasive disease was observed at our five-hospital healthcare system in Southeast Michigan. The objective of this study was to describe characteristics of patients with invasive GAS and characterize treatment and outcomes of disease. Methods: This was a retrospective cross-sectional study of patients from June 2013 to August 2023 with positive blood cultures for GAS. Patients were identified using a data query for positive blood cultures for GAS through Microsoft SQL Server. Patients with age < 1 8 years, polymicrobial bacteremia, incomplete data, or who were enrolled in hospice and/or died within 48-hours of admission were excluded. Collected variables included: demographics, infection characteristics (syndrome, duration of bacteremia), microbiological characteristics (antimicrobial susceptibility testing; AST), antimicrobial treatment (empiric and final, antitoxin therapy), and clinical outcomes (length of hospital stay [LOS], treatment-associated adverse events, 30-day mortality and infection-related readmission). Results: 250 patients were included (Table 1). More than half were male with median age of 57.5 years. Diabetes mellitus (38%) and chronic kidney disease (23%) were common comorbidities [Table 1]. Persons experiencing homelessness and persons who use injection drugs accounted for 9% and 13% of the cases, respectively. The most common infective syndrome accompanying bacteremia was cellulitis (57%). The majority of patients received vancomycin for empiric therapy (81%) and penicillin (38%) or cephalosporin (36%) for final regimen [Table 2]. A total of 79 GAS isolates (32%) were clindamycin resistant. Clindamycin was included in the empiric regimen of 20 (8%) patients, the final regimen in 44 (18%) of patients, and as antitoxin adjunct therapy in 135 (54%) of patients. A third (33%) of patients received no antitoxin. The average duration of antitoxin therapy was 3.6 days and antimicrobial therapy 19.9 days. The mean LOS was 11.4 days (Table 3). Thirty nine (16%) patients had treatment failure and 8 (3%) experienced C. difficile infection within 30 days of antimicrobial treatment. Thirty-day mortality was 11%; of these, 9% had in-hospital mortality. Conclusions: Invasive GAS infection confers significant morbidity and mortality, and ongoing research is needed to determine the best treatment regimens in the era of increasing clindamycin resistance.

Introducing soybean cultivars resistant to 2,4-D and dicamba allowed for postemergence applications of these herbicides. These herbicides pose a high risk for off-target movement, and the potential influence on crops such as hemp is unknown. Two studies were conducted from 2020 through 2022 in controlled environments to evaluate hemp response to rates simulating off-target events of 2,4-D and dicamba. The objectives of these studies were to (1) determine the effects of herbicide (2,4-D and dicamba) and rate (1× to 1/100,000× labeled rate) on visible injury, height, and branching, and (2) determine the effect of 2,4-D rate (1× to 1/100,000× labeled rate) on visible injury, height, branching, and reproductive parameters. Herbicides were applied in the early vegetative stage, and evaluations took place 14 and 28 d after treatment (DAT) and at trial termination (42 DAT in the greenhouse trial and at harvest in the growth chamber trial). In the greenhouse study, 2,4-D and dicamba at the 1× rate, and the 1/10× rate of dicamba, caused 68%, 78%, and 20% injury 28 DAT, respectively. At the time of trial termination 42 DAT, plants treated with 1× rates of 2,4-D and dicamba, or 1/10× dicamba, were 19, 25, and 9 cm shorter than the nontreated control, respectively. Simulated off-target rates of 2,4-D and dicamba did not influence branching or plant weight at trial termination. In the growth chamber study, the 1× and 1/10× rates of 2,4-D caused 82% and 2% injury 28 DAT, respectively. Plant height, fresh weight, and cannabidiol (CBD) levels of plants treated with simulated off-target rates of 2,4-D were not different from the nontreated control. These studies suggest that hemp grown for CBD exposed to off-target rates of 2,4-D or dicamba in early vegetative stages may not have distinguishable effects 42 DAT or at harvest.

There is currently considerable interest in the guided-jet mode, as a result of recent works demonstrating it being the upstream component of various resonant systems in high-speed flows. For given jet operating conditions, the mode is known to exist over only a finite-frequency range that, for a twin-jet system, has been observed to vary with both jet separation and solution symmetry. Vortex-sheet and finite-thickness linear stability models are here employed to consider the behaviour of the guided-jet mode as the two jets are brought together, for both a planar and round twin-jet system. It is demonstrated that in both cases as the twin-jet system merges it forms a higher-order mode of an equivalent single-jet geometry. This then imposes a constraint on the guided-jet mode as the finite-frequency range must change to meet that of the equivalent geometry the system merges to, explaining the previously observed dependence on jet separation.

Understanding historical environmental determinants associated with the risk of elevated marine water contamination could enhance monitoring marine beaches in a Canadian setting, which can also inform predictive marine water quality models and ongoing climate change preparedness efforts. This study aimed to assess the combination of environmental factors that best predicts Escherichia coli (E. coli) concentration at public beaches in Metro Vancouver, British Columbia, by combining the region’s microbial water quality data and publicly available environmental data from 2013 to 2021. We developed a Bayesian log-normal mixed-effects regression model to evaluate predictors of geometric E. coli concentrations at 15 beaches in the Metro Vancouver Region. We identified that higher levels of geometric mean E. coli levels were predicted by higher previous sample day E. coli concentrations, higher rainfall in the preceding 48 h, and higher 24-h average air temperature at the median or higher levels of the 24-h mean ultraviolet (UV) index. In contrast, higher levels of mean salinity were predicted to result in lower levels of E. coli. Finally, we determined that the average effects of the predictors varied highly by beach. Our findings could form the basis for building real-time predictive marine water quality models to enable more timely beach management decision-making.

Apophyllite, a hydrous K-Ca-phyllosilicate, reacts with acidic aqueous solutions at room temperature. Various analytical methods have been applied to study the mechanism of the reaction and its characteristics, i.e. the changes in chemical composition, modifications in crystal structure and alterations in surface morphology. In contact with acidic solution, protonation of the terminal, non-bridging oxygen at the silicate tetrahedra takes place and the interlayer cations K+ and Ca2+ are removed. The protonation and ion removal causes the interlayer spacing to increase. Atomic force microscopy shows that the increase takes place discontinuously and, therefore, reflects a discontinuous reaction that comprises a two- or three-step protonation. Additionally, three structurally different protonation sites have been detected by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy which also differ in the amount of close-by hydrogen, although in pristine apophyllite all terminal oxygen positions at silicate tetrahedra are structurally equivalent. In many clay minerals such structurally different protonation sites have not been detected so far. Thus, the multi-step protonation process in apophyllite clearly demonstrates the vast sensitivity of the protonation reaction on small structural variations in phyllosilicates.

Linear stability theory (LST) is often used to model the large-scale flow structures in the turbulent mixing region and near pressure field of high-speed jets. For perfectly expanded single round jets, these models predict the dominance of azimuthal wavenumbers $m=0$ and $m = 1$ helical modes for the lower frequency range, in agreement with empirical data. When LST is applied to twin-jet systems, four solution families appear following the odd/even behaviour of the pressure field about the symmetry planes. The interaction between the unsteady pressure fields of the two jets also results in their coupling. The individual modes of the different solution families no longer correspond to helical motions, but to flapping oscillations of the jet plumes. In the limit of large jet separations, when the jet coupling vanishes, the eigenvalues corresponding to the $m=1$ mode in each family are identical, and a linear combination of them recovers the helical motion. Conversely, as the jet separation decreases, the eigenvalues for the $m=1$ modes of each family diverge, thus favouring a particular flapping oscillation over the others and preventing the appearance of helical motions. The dominant mode of oscillation for a given jet Mach number $M_j$ and temperature ratio $T_R$ depends on the Strouhal number $St$ and jet separation $s$. Increasing both $M_j$ and $T_R$ independently is found to augment the jet coupling and modify the $(St,s)$ map of the preferred oscillation mode. Present results predict the preference of two modes when the jet interaction is relevant, namely varicose and especially sinuous flapping oscillations on the nozzles’ plane.

We recently reported on the radio-frequency attenuation length of cold polar ice at Summit Station, Greenland, based on bi-static radar measurements of radio-frequency bedrock echo strengths taken during the summer of 2021. Those data also allow studies of (a) the relative contributions of coherent (such as discrete internal conducting layers with sub-centimeter transverse scale) vs incoherent (e.g. bulk volumetric) scattering, (b) the magnitude of internal layer reflection coefficients, (c) limits on signal propagation velocity asymmetries (‘birefringence’) and (d) limits on signal dispersion in-ice over a bandwidth of ~100 MHz. We find that (1) attenuation lengths approach 1 km in our band, (2) after averaging 10 000 echo triggers, reflected signals observable over the thermal floor (to depths of ~1500 m) are consistent with being entirely coherent, (3) internal layer reflectivities are ≈–60$\to$–70 dB, (4) birefringent effects for vertically propagating signals are smaller by an order of magnitude relative to South Pole and (5) within our experimental limits, glacial ice is non-dispersive over the frequency band relevant for neutrino detection experiments.

Turfgrass managers apply nonselective herbicides to control winter annual weeds during dormancy of warm-season turfgrass. Zoysiagrass subcanopies, however, retain green leaves and stems during winter dormancy, especially in warmer climates. The partially green zoysiagrass often deters the use of nonselective herbicides due to variable injury concerns in transition and southern climatic zones. This study evaluated zoysiagrass response to glyphosate and glufosinate applied at four different growing degree day (GDD)-based application timings during postdormancy transition in different locations, including Blacksburg, VA; Starkville, MS; and Virginia Beach, VA, in 2018 and 2019. GDD was calculated using a 5 C base temperature with accumulation beginning January 1 each year, and targeted application timings were 125, 200, 275, and 350 GDD5C. Zoysiagrass injury response to glyphosate and glufosinate was consistent across a broad growing region from northern Mississippi to coastal Virginia, but it varied by application timing. Glyphosate application at 125 and 200 GDD5C can be used safely for weed control during the postdormancy period of zoysiagrass, while glufosinate caused unacceptable turf injury regardless of application timing. Glyphosate and glufosinate exhibited a stepwise increase to maximum injury with increasing targeted GDD5C application timings. Glyphosate applied at 125 or 200 GDD5C did not injure zoysiagrass above a threshold of 30%, whereas glufosinate caused greater than 30% injury for 28 and 29 d when applied at 125 and 200 GDD5C, respectively. Likewise, glyphosate application at 125 or 200 GDD5C did not affect the zoysiagrass green cover area under the progress curve per day, whereas later applications reduced it. Glyphosate and glufosinate caused greater injury to zoysiagrass when applied at greater cumulative heat units and this was attributed to increasing turfgrass green leaf density, because heat unit accumulation is positively correlated with green leaf density. Accumulated heat unit-based application timing will allow practitioners to apply nonselective herbicides with reduced injury concerns.

Spatial linear stability analysis is used to study the axisymmetric screech tones generated by twin converging round nozzles at low supersonic Mach numbers. Vortex-sheet and finite-thickness models allow for identification of the different waves supported by the flow at different conditions. Regions of the frequency–wavenumber domain for which the upstream-propagating guided jet modes are observed to be neutrally stable are observed to vary as a function of solution symmetry, jet separation, $S$, and the velocity profile used. Screech-frequency predictions performed using wavenumbers obtained from both models agree well with experimental data. Predictions obtained from the finite-thickness model better align with the screech tones measured experimentally and so are seen to be an improvement on predictions made with the vortex sheet. Additionally, results from the finite-thickness model predict both symmetric and antisymmetric screech tones for low $S$ that are found in the vortex-sheet model only at greater $S$. The present results indicate that the feedback loop generating these screech tones is similar to that observed for single-jet resonance, with equivalent upstream and downstream modes.

Time preferences may explain public opinion about a wide range of long-term policy problems with costs and benefits realized in the distant future. However, mass publics may discount these costs and benefits because they are later or because they are more uncertain. Standard methods to elicit individual-level time preferences tend to conflate risk and time attitudes and are susceptible to social desirability bias. A potential solution relies on a costly lab-experimental method, convex time budgets (CTB). We present and experimentally validate an affordable version of this approach for implementation in mass surveys. We find that the theoretically preferred CTB patience measure predicts attitudes toward a local, delayed investment problem but fails to predict support for more complex, future-oriented policies.

Parole revocation, the process of returning individuals to incarceration due to non-compliance with conditions of community supervision, contributes to mass incarceration and is tied to the complex process of back-end sentencing. This discretionary decision is typically opaque, and theoretical understanding is limited. Applying the focal concerns framework, this study employs population-level data from an American jurisdiction on individuals who are on parole and have violated their supervision (n = 13,121). We found that practical, extralegal considerations such as the amount of time left on parole, the number of programs geared toward people on parole, and whether they participated in community programs after release from prison significantly influenced back-end sentencing. These results question the assumed relationship between individual-level and systemic factors during revocations while also providing empirical support for broadening the scope of theoretically relevant domains.

Field studies were conducted to assess the efficacy of physical weed management of Palmer amaranth management in cucumber, peanut, and sweetpotato. Treatments were arranged in a 3 × 4 factorial in which the first factor included a treatment method of electrical, mechanical, or hand-roguing Palmer amaranth control and the second factor consisted of treatments applied when Palmer amaranth was approximately 0.3, 0.6, 0.9, or 1.2 m above the crop canopy. Four wk after treatment (WAT), the electrical applications controlled Palmer amaranth at least 27 percentage points more than the mechanical applications when applied at the 0.3- and 0.6-m timings. At the 0.9- and 1.2-m application timings 4 WAT, electrical and mechanical applications controlled Palmer amaranth by at most 87%. Though hand removal generally resulted in the greatest peanut pod count and total sweetpotato yield, mechanical and electrical control resulted in similar yield to the hand-rogued plots, depending on the treatment timing. With additional research to provide insight into the optimal applications, there is potential for electrical control and mechanical control to be used as alternatives to hand removal. Additional studies were conducted to determine the effects of electrical treatments on Palmer amaranth seed production and viability. Treatments consisted of electricity applied to Palmer amaranth at first visible inflorescence, 2 wk after first visible inflorescence (WAI) or 4 WAI. Treatments at varying reproductive maturities did not reduce the seed production immediately after treatment. However, after treatment, plants primarily died and ceased maturation, reducing seed production assessed at 4 WAI by 93% and 70% when treated at 0 and 2 WAI, respectively. Treatments did not have a negative effect on germination or seedling length.

Why has fiction been so successful over time? We make the case that fiction may have properties that enhance both individual and group-level fitness by (a) allowing risk-free simulation of important scenarios, (b) effectively transmitting solutions to common problems, and (c) enhancing group cohesion through shared consumption of fictive worlds.
