When a droplet impacts onto a superheated liquid pool, vapour generation and drainage within the gas cushion play a crucial role in postponing or even preventing contact between the droplet and the pool surface. Through direct numerical simulations, we closely examine the transient dynamics of vapour flow confined within the thin film, with a particular focus on the minimum thickness of this film under a range of impact conditions. Our numerical findings manifest the significant influence of evaporation on the vertical motion of the liquid–vapour interface, revealing how the minimum film thickness evolves in response to variations in impact velocity and degree of superheat. In our numerical simulations, we have identified two distinct evolution laws for the minimum film thickness, corresponding to moderate and high superheat regimes, respectively. These regimes are differentiated by the dominance of evaporation effects within the vapour film during the early falling stage. Subsequently, we establish scaling relations to characterize these regimes by carefully balancing inertial, pressure and evaporation effects within the thin vapour film. Furthermore, we observe that the vapour pressure eventually reaches equilibrium with the rapid increase in capillary pressure at the spreading front, thereby controlling the minimum thickness of the vapour layer in both moderate and high superheat regimes. We derive self-similar solutions based on this equilibrium, and the predicted minimum film thickness aligns remarkably well with our numerical results. This provides compelling evidence that evaporation alone is insufficient to prevent droplet–pool coalescence.

We report an experimental study of Rayleigh–Bénard convection of liquid metal GaInSn in a cuboid cell with an aspect ratio of 0.5 under the effect of a horizontal magnetic field. The Rayleigh number spans a range of $3.8\times 10^5 \leqslant Ra \leqslant 1.1\times 10^7$, while the magnetic field strength reaches up to 0.5 T, corresponding to a maximum Hartmann number to 2041. By combining temperature and velocity measurements, we identify several flow morphologies, including a novel cellular pattern characterized by four stacked vortices that periodically squeeze and induce velocity reversals. Based on the identified flow morphologies, we partition the entire ($Ra, Ha$) parameter space into five distinct flow regimes and systematically investigate the flow characteristics within each regime. The temperature gradient and oscillation frequency exhibit scaling relationships with the combined parameters $Ra$ and $Ha$. Notably, we observe a coupling between flow regime and global transport efficiencies, particularly in a regime dominated by the double-roll structure, which experiences a maximum 36 % decrease in heat transfer efficiency compared with the single-roll structure. The dependencies of heat and momentum transport on $Ra$ and $Ha$ follow scaling laws as $Nu \sim (Ha^{-2/3}RaPr^{-1})^{3/5}$ and $Re \sim (Ha^{-1}RaPr^{-1})^{4/3}$, respectively.

Investigations are conducted on the effect of wall proximity on the flow around a cylinder under an axial magnetic field, using the electrical potential probe technology to measure the velocity of liquid metal flow. The study focused on the impact of the inlet velocity of the fluid, the magnetic field and wall proximity on the characteristics of velocity fields, particularly on the vortex-shedding mode. Based on different magnitudes of the magnetic field and the distance from the cylinder to the duct wall, three types of vortex-shedding modes are identified, (I) shear layer oscillation state, (II) quasi-two-dimensional vortex-shedding states and (III) transition of the magnetohydrodynamic to hydrodynamic Kármán street. The transitions between these modes are analysed in detail. The experimental results show that the weak wall-proximity effect leads to the formation of the Kármán vortex street, while a reverse Kármán vortex street and secondary vortices emerge under a strong wall-proximity effect. It is noticed that the Kelvin–Helmholtz instability drives vortex shedding under regime I, leading to an increase in the Strouhal number (St) with stronger magnetic fields. Additionally, under a strong axial magnetic field, the wall-proximity effect (‘Shercliff layer effect’) promotes the instability of shear layers on both sides of the cylinder. These unique coupling effects are validated by variations in modal coefficients and energy proportions under different vortex-shedding regimes using the proper orthogonal decomposition method.

This study conducts a numerical investigation into the three-dimensional film boiling of liquid under the influence of external magnetic fields. The numerical method incorporates a sharp phase-change model based on the volume-of-fluid approach to track the liquid–vapour interface. Additionally, a consistent and conservative scheme is employed to calculate the induced current densities and electromagnetic forces. We investigate the magnetohydrodynamic effects on film boiling, particularly examining the pattern transition of the vapour bubble and the evolution of heat transfer characteristics, exposed to either a vertical or horizontal magnetic field. In single-mode scenarios, film boiling under a vertical magnetic field displays an isotropic flow structure, forming a columnar vapour jet at higher magnetic field intensities. In contrast, horizontal magnetic fields result in anisotropic flow, creating a two-dimensional vapour sheet as the magnetic strength increases. In multi-mode scenarios, the patterns observed in single-mode film boiling persist, with the interaction of vapour bubbles introducing additional complexity to the magnetohydrodynamic flow. More importantly, our comprehensive analysis reveals how and why distinct boiling effects are generated by various orientations of magnetic fields, which induce directional electromagnetic forces to suppress flow vortices within the cross-sectional plane.

In a horizontally heated melting system, where a solid substance is subject to melting by a warmer liquid beneath, the presence of solute in the liquid introduces a complex interplay between temperature and concentration dynamics. Employing a recently developed sharp interface method (Xue et al., J. Comput. Phys., vol. 491, 2023), we conduct direct numerical simulations to investigate the transient behaviour of the system across a broad range of Rayleigh numbers and solute concentrations. Our observations reveal distinct flow regimes: at low concentrations, the system resembles a temperature-driven melting problem, characterized by vortex rolls beneath the melting interface. As the solute concentration increases, a stably stratified layer emerges beneath the interface, leading to the transition from thermal convection to penetrative convection, which resembles those flow characteristics observed in the double-diffusive convection. This shift results from the competition between the stabilizing effect induced by solute concentration gradient and the destabilizing effect caused by temperature gradient. Otherwise in the diffusion regime, characterized by very high solute concentrations, the flow becomes static due to the complete suppression of convection by the stably stratified layer. This regime further exhibits two distinct patterns: ‘melting’ and ‘dissolution’. Beyond characterizing diverse flow patterns, our study conducts a quantitative analysis, examining heat/mass transfer, melting rates, and the evolution of temperature and concentration at the interface. These insights contribute to a better understanding of the intricate interplay between temperature and solute concentration during phase change, with implications for accurately estimating melting rates in binary fluid systems.

An ultrasonic phased array system is introduced to study the three-dimensional (3-D) movement of a single bubble in a GaInSn alloy under a transverse magnetic field (MF), which is verified by bubble experiments in water. The 3-D motion trajectories of individual bubbles in the GaInSn are obtained under a horizontal MF. As the MF becomes stronger, the bubble successively oscillates in random directions (R mode), a direction perpendicular to the MF (V mode), a direction parallel to the MF (P mode) and finally it rises straight (S mode). The significant anisotropy of the oscillation directions at a moderate MF intensity may be due to the anisotropy of the vortex structure around the bubble. Furthermore, the oscillation amplitude gradually declines with increasing MF intensity until the bubble trajectory finally becomes a straight line. Our measurements allow us to specify the characteristic regions for the observed bubble modes in the $N-Eo-Re$ parameter space (N is the magnetic interaction parameter, Eo is the Eötvös number and Re is the Reynolds number). In addition, more detailed characteristics of bubble terminal velocity are revealed, showing that the bubble velocities are closely related to the motion modes. The increase in bubble velocity at a moderate MF intensity is caused by the weakening oscillation. At a high strength, the MF monotonically suppresses the rise velocity of the bubble with a fixed scaling law.

We investigate the Faraday instabilities of a three-layer fluid system in a cylindrical container containing low-viscosity liquid metal, sodium hydroxide solution and air by establishing the Mathieu equations with considering the viscous model derived by Labrador et al. (J. Phys.: Conf. Ser., vol. 2090, 2021, 012088). The Floquet analysis, asymptotic analysis, direct numerical simulation and experimental method are adopted in the present study. We obtain the dispersion relations and critical oscillation amplitudes of zigzag and varicose modes from the analysis of the Mathieu equations, which agree well with the experimental result. Furthermore, considering the coupling strength of two interfaces, besides zigzag and varicose modes, we find a beating instability mode that contains two primary frequencies, with its average frequency equalling half of the external excitation frequency in the strongly coupled system. In the weakly coupled system, the $A$-interface instability, $B$-interface instability and $A$&$B$-interface instability are defined. Finally, we obtain a critical wavenumber $k_c$ that can determine the transition from zigzag or varicose modes to the corresponding $A$-interface or $B$-interface instability.

Direct numerical simulations have been conducted to investigate turbulent Rayleigh– Bénard convection (RBC) of liquid metal in a cuboid vessel with aspect ratio $\varGamma =5$ under an imposed horizontal magnetic field. Flows with Prandtl number $Pr=0.033$, Rayleigh numbers ranging up to $Ra\leq 10^{7}$, and Chandrasekhar numbers up to $Q\leq 9 \times 10^6$ are considered. For weak magnetic fields, our findings reveal that a previously undiscovered decreasing region precedes the enhancement of heat transfer and kinetic energy. For moderate magnetic fields, we have reproduced the reversals of the large-scale flow, which are considered a reorganization process of the roll-like structures that were reported experimentally by Yanagisawa et al. (Phys. Rev. E, vol. 83, 2011, 036307). Nevertheless, the proposed approach of skewed-varicose instability has been substantiated as insufficient to elucidate fundamentally the phenomenon of flow reversal, an occurrence bearing a striking resemblance to the large-scale intermittency observed in magnetic channel flows. As we increase the magnetic field strength further, we observe that the energy dissipation of the system comes primarily from the viscous dissipation within the boundary layer. Consequently, the dependence of Reynolds number $Re$ on $Q$ approaches a scaling as $Re\,Pr/Ra^{2/3} \sim Q^{-1/3}$. At the same time, we find the law for the cutoff frequency that separates large quasi-two-dimensional scales from small three-dimensional ones in RBC flow, which scales with the interaction parameter as ${\sim }N^{1/3}$.

A typical feature of thermal convection is the formation of large-scale flow (LSF) structures of the order of system size. How this structure affects global heat transport is an important issue in the study of thermal convection. We present an experimental study of the coupling between the flow structure and heat transport in liquid metal convection with different degrees of spatial confinement, characterized by the aspect ratio $\varGamma$ of the convection cell. Combining measurements in two convection cells with $\varGamma =1.0$ and 0.5, the study shows that a large-scale circulation (LSC) transports ${\sim }35\,\%$ more heat than a twisted LSC. It is further found that when the LSF is in the form of the LSC state, the system is in a fully developed turbulence state with a $Nu\sim Ra^{0.29}$ scaling for the heat transport. However, the twisted LSC state with a heat transport scaling of $Nu\sim Ra^{0.37}$ appears when the system is not in the fully developed turbulence state. Bistability is observed when the system evolves from the twisted-LSC-dominated to the LSC-dominated state.

The global linear stability analysis for the magnetohydrodynamic liquid metal flow past an insulated sphere subjected to a constant streamwise magnetic field is investigated in the range of the Reynolds number $Re\leq 400$ and the interaction number $N\leq 40$ coupled with direct numerical simulations, where $N$ stands for strength of the electromagnetic force. The stability of the steady axisymmetric base flow to independent time-azimuthal modes is discussed. Five critical curves associated with various wake transitions are obtained in the $\{Re, N\}$ phase diagram. These critical curves reveal the stabilising effect of a weak magnetic field, the destabilising effect of a strong magnetic field and re-stabilising effect of a much stronger magnetic field. To explore the impact of the magnetic field on flow instability, a sensitivity analysis utilizing an adjoint method is performed for the first regular bifurcation. Sensitivity functions of growth rate to base-flow modifications and Lorentz force are defined to identify the region that has the most significant influence on flow instability, such as the recirculation region responsible for the stabilising effect at a weak magnetic field and the shear layer region responsible for the destabilising effect at a strong magnetic field. Furthermore, a competition between the stabilising and shear destabilising effects of the magnetic field is discussed. This analysis provides valuable insights into the non-monotonic effect of the magnetic field on flow instability.

We present an experimental study of Rayleigh–Bénard convection using liquid metal alloy gallium-indium-tin as the working fluid with a Prandtl number of $Pr=0.029$. The flow state and the heat transport were measured in a Rayleigh number range of $1.2\times 10^{4} \le Ra \le 1.3\times 10^{7}$. The temperature fluctuation at the cell centre is used as a proxy for the flow state. It is found that, as $Ra$ increases from the lower end of the parameter range, the flow evolves from a convection state to an oscillation state, a chaotic state and finally a turbulent state for $Ra>10^5$. The study suggests that the large-scale circulation in the turbulent state is a residual of the cell structure near the onset of convection, which is in contrast with the case of $Pr\sim 1$, where the cell structure is transiently replaced by high order flow modes before the emergence of the large-scale circulation in the turbulent state. The evolution of the flow state is also reflected by the heat transport characterised by the Nusselt number $Nu$ and the probability density function (p.d.f.) of the temperature fluctuation at the cell centre. It is found that the effective local heat transport scaling exponent $\gamma$, i.e. $Nu\sim Ra^{\gamma }$, changes continuously from $\gamma =0.49$ at $Ra\sim 10^4$ to $\gamma =0.25$ for $Ra>10^6$. Meanwhile, the p.d.f. at the cell centre gradually evolves from a Gaussian-like shape before the transition to turbulence to an exponential-like shape in the turbulent state. For $Ra>10^6$, the flow shows self-similar behaviour, which is revealed by the universal shape of the p.d.f. of the temperature fluctuation at the cell centre and a $Nu=0.19Ra^{0.25}$ scaling for the heat transport.

The buoyancy-driven dynamics of a pair of gas bubbles released in line is investigated numerically, focusing on highly inertial conditions under which isolated bubbles follow non-straight paths. In an early stage, the second bubble always drifts out of the wake of the leading one. Then, depending on the ratios of the buoyancy, viscous and capillary forces which define the Galilei ($Ga$) and Bond ($Bo$) numbers of the system, five distinct regimes specific to such conditions are identified, in which the two bubbles may rise independently or continue to interact and possibly collide in the end. In the former case, they usually perform large-amplitude planar zigzags within the same plane or within two distinct planes, depending on the oblateness of the leading bubble. However, for large enough $Ga$ and low enough $Bo$, they follow nearly vertical paths with small-amplitude erratic horizontal deviations. Increasing $Bo$ makes the wake-induced attraction toward the leading bubble stronger, forcing the two bubbles to realign vertically one or more times along their ascent. During such sequences, wake vortices may hit the trailing bubble, deflecting its path and, depending on the case, promoting or hindering further possibilities of interaction. In some regimes, varying the initial distance separating the two bubbles modifies their lateral separation beyond the initial stage. Similarly, minute initial angular deviations favour the selection of a single vertical plane of rise common to both bubbles. These changes may dramatically affect the fate of the tandem as, depending on $Bo$, they promote or prevent future vertical realignments.

The motion of a pair of bubbles rising side by side under the influence of external magnetic fields is numerically examined. Through solving the fully three-dimensional Navier–Stokes equations, the results reveal that the bubble interactions are rather sensitive to the field direction and strength. At first, we identify that, in a hydrodynamic flow, whether the two bubbles will bounce or coalesce depends on the developments of the counter-rotating streamwise vortices during the collision. In particular, for an originally bouncing bubble pair, a streamwise magnetic field tends to promote their coalescence by weakening the strengths of the standing streamwise vortices, and such a weakening effect is caused by the asymmetric distribution of the Lorentz force in the presence of another bubble such that a torque is induced to offset the original streamwise vortices. Under a horizontal magnetic field, on the other hand, the influences are highly dependent on the angle between the bubble centroid line and the field: a transverse field or a moderate spanwise field always leads the bubble pair to coalescence while a strong spanwise field has the opposite effect. This anisotropic effect comes from the Lorentz force induced flow diffusion along the magnetic field, which not only produces two pairs of streamwise vortices at the bubble rear, but also homogenizes the pressure along the magnetic lines. As the competition between the two mechanisms varies with the magnetic direction and strength, the interaction between the bubble pair also changes. We show that the external magnetic fields control the bubble interaction through reconstructing the vortex structures, and hence the core mechanisms are identified.

The buoyancy-driven motion of two identical gas bubbles released in line in a liquid at rest is examined with the help of highly resolved simulations, focusing on moderately inertial regimes in which the path of an isolated bubble is vertical. Assuming first an axisymmetric evolution, equilibrium configurations of the bubble pair are determined as a function of the buoyancy-to-viscous and buoyancy-to-capillary force ratios which define the Galilei ($Ga$) and Bond ($Bo$) numbers of the system, respectively. The three-dimensional solutions reveal that this axisymmetric equilibrium is actually never reached. Instead, provided $Bo$ stands below a critical $Ga$-dependent threshold determining the onset of coalescence, two markedly different evolutions are observed. At the lower end of the explored $(Ga, Bo)$-range, the tandem follows a drafting–kissing–tumbling scenario, which eventually yields a planar side-by-side motion. For larger $Ga$, the trailing bubble drifts laterally and gets out of the wake of the leading bubble, barely altering the path of the latter. In this second scenario, the late configuration is characterized by a significant inclination of the tandem ranging from $30^\circ$ to $40^\circ$ with respect to the vertical. Bubble deformation has a major influence on the evolution of the system. It controls the magnitude of vortical effects in the wake of the leading bubble, hence the strength of the attractive force acting on the trailing bubble. It also governs the strength and even the sign of the lateral force acting on this bubble, a mechanism of particular importance when the tandem is released with a small angular deviation.

High-resolution direct numerical simulations are performed to study the turbulent shear flow of liquid metal in a cylindrical container. The flow is driven by an azimuthal Lorentz force induced by the interaction between the radial electric currents injected through electrodes placed at the bottom wall and a magnetic field imposed in the axial direction. All physical parameters, are aligned with the experiment by Messadek & Moreau (J. Fluid Mech. vol. 456, 2002, pp. 137–159). The simulations recover the variations of angular momentum, velocity profiles, boundary layer thickness and turbulent spectra found experimentally to a very good precision. They further reveal a transition to small scale turbulence in the wall side layer when the Reynolds number based on Hartmann layer thickness $R$ exceeds 121, and a separation of this layer for $R \geq 145.2$. Ekman recirculations significantly influence these quantities and determine global dissipation. This phenomenology well captured by the 2-D PSM model (Pothérat, Sommeria & Moreau, J. Fluid Mech. vol. 424, 2000, pp. 75–100) until small-scale turbulence appears and incurs significant extra dissipation only captured by 3-D simulations. Secondly, we recover the theoretical law for the cutoff scale separating large quasi-two-dimensional (Q2-D) scales from small three-dimensional ones (Sommeria & Moreau, J. Fluid Mech. vol. 118, 1982, pp. 507–518), and thus establish its validity in sheared magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) turbulence. We further find that three-componentality and three-dimensionality appear concurrently and that both the frequency corresponding to the Q2-D cutoff scale and the mean energy associated with he axial component of velocity scale with the true interaction parameter $N_t$, respectively, as $0.063 N_t^{0.37}$ and $0.126N_t^{-0.92}$.

The wake structure of an incompressible, conducting, viscous fluid past an electrically insulating sphere affected by a transverse magnetic field is investigated numerically over flow regimes including steady and unsteady laminar flows at Reynolds numbers up to 300. For a steady axisymmetric flow affected by a transverse magnetic field, the wake structure is deemed to be a double plane symmetric state. For a periodic flow, unsteady vortex shedding is first suppressed and transitions to a steady plane symmetric state and then to a double plane symmetric pattern. Wake structures in the range $210<Re\leqslant 300$ without a magnetic field have a symmetry plane. An angle $\unicode[STIX]{x1D703}$ exists between the orientation of this symmetry plane and the imposed transverse magnetic field. For a given transverse magnetic field, the final wake structure is found to be independent of the initial flow configuration with a different angle $\unicode[STIX]{x1D703}$. However, the orientation of the symmetry plane tends to be perpendicular to the magnetic field, which implies that the transverse magnetic field can control the orientation of the wake structure of a free-moving sphere and change the direction of its horizontal motion by a field–wake–trajectory control mechanism. An interesting ‘reversion phenomenon’ is found, where the wake structure of the sphere at a higher Reynolds number and a certain magnetic interaction parameter ($N$) corresponds to a lower Reynolds number with a lower $N$ value. Furthermore, the drag coefficient is proportional to $N^{2/3}$ for weak magnetic fields or to $N^{1/2}$ for strong magnetic fields, where the threshold value between these two regimes is approximately $N=4$.

When the Galileo number is below the first bifurcation, the instability and transition of a vertical ascension or the fall of a free sphere affected by a vertical magnetic field are investigated numerically. A compact model is used to explain that the magnetic field can destabilize the fluid–solid system. When the interaction parameter exceeds a critical value, the sphere trajectory is transitioned from a steady vertical trajectory to a steady oblique one. Furthermore, the trajectory will remain vertical at a sufficiently large magnetic field because of a double effect of the magnetic field on the fluid–solid system. Under the influence of an external vertical magnetic field, four wake patterns at the rear of the sphere are found and the physical behaviour of the free sphere is independent of the density ratio. The wake or trajectory of the free sphere is only determined by the Galileo number $G$ and the interaction parameter $N$. A close relationship between the streamwise vorticity and the sphere motion is found. An interesting ‘agglomeration phenomenon’ is also found, which shows that the vertical velocities are agglomerated into a point for a certain magnetic field regardless of the Galileo number and satisfy a scaling law $V_{z}\sim N^{-1/4}$, when $N>1$. The principal results of the present work are summarized in a map of regimes in the $\{G,N\}$ plane.

The wake structure and transition process of an incompressible viscous fluid flow past a sphere affected by an imposed streamwise magnetic field are investigated numerically over flow regimes that include steady and unsteady laminar flows at Reynolds numbers up to 300. For cases without a magnetic field, a subregion with the existence of a limit cycle is found in the range $210<Re<270$. The point of division is between $Re=220$ and $Re=230$. For cases with a streamwise magnetic field, five wake patterns are the steady axisymmetric wake with an attached separation bubble, the steady plane symmetric wake with a small spiral dismissed, the steady plane symmetric wake with a limit cycle, the steady plane symmetric wake with a small spiral fed by the upstream fluid and the unsteady plane symmetric wake with a wave-like oscillation or vortex shedding. Under the influence of an imposed streamwise magnetic field, the wake will be transitioned to various patterns. An interesting ‘reversion phenomenon’, which describes the topological structure behind a sphere with a higher Reynolds number and a certain interaction parameter which corresponds to a lower Reynolds number case with a certain interaction parameter or a much lower Reynolds number case without a magnetic field, is also found. The principal results of the present work are summarized in a map of regimes in the $\{N,Re\}$ plane.

It has been demonstrated by many experiments carried out over the last 60 years that in certain liquids a single millimetre-sized bubble will rise within an unstable path, which is sometimes observed to transit from zigzag to spiral. After performing several groups of direct numerical simulations, the present work gives a theoretical explanation to reveal the physical mechanism causing the transition, and the results are presented in two parts. In the first part, in which a freely rising bubble is simulated, equal-strength vortex pairs are observed to shed twice during a period of the pure zigzag path, and this type of motion is triggered by the amounts of streamwise vorticities accumulated on the bubble interface, when a critical value is reached. However, when the balance between the counter-rotating vortices is broken, an angular velocity is induced between the asymmetric vortex pairs, driving the bubble to rise in an opposite spiral path. Therefore, although there is no preference of the spiral direction as observed in experiments, it is actually determined by the sign of the stronger vortex thread. In the second part, external vertical magnetic fields are imposed onto the spirally rising bubble in order to further confirm the relations between the vortex structures and the unstable path patterns. As shown in our previous studies (Zhang & Ni, Phys. Fluids, vol. 26 (10), 2014, 102102), the strength of the double-threaded vortex pairs, as well as the imbalance between them, will be weakened under magnetic fields. Therefore, as the vortex pairs become more symmetric, the rotating radius of the spirally rising bubble is observed to decrease. We try to answer the question, put forward by Shew et al. (2005, Preprint, ENS, Lyon), ‘what caused the bubble to transit from zigzag to spiral naturally?’

A theoretical model is developed to predict the maximum spreading of liquid metal drops when impacting onto dry surfaces under the influence of a vertical magnetic field. This model, which is constructed based on the energy conversion principle, agrees very well with the numerical results, covering a wide range of impact speeds, contact angles and magnetic strengths. When there is no magnetic field, we found that the maximum spreading factor can be predicted well by an interpolating scheme between the viscous and capillary effects, as proposed by Laan et al. (Phys. Rev. Appl., vol. 2 (4), 2014, 044018). However, when gradually increasing the magnetic field strength, the induced Lorentz forces are dominant over the viscous and capillary forces, taking the spreading behaviour into the ‘Joule regime’, where the Joule dissipation is significant. For most situations of practical interest, namely when the strength of the magnetic field is less than 3 T, all three energy conversion routes are important. Therefore, we determine the correct scaling behaviours for the magnetic influence by first equating the loss of kinetic energy to the Joule dissipation in the Joule regime, then by interpolating it with the viscous dissipation and the capillary effects, which allows for a universal rescaling. By plotting the numerical results against the theoretical model, all the results can be rescaled onto a single curve regardless of the materials of the liquid metals or the contact angles of the surfaces, proving that our theoretical model is correct in predicting the maximum spreading factor by constructing a balanced formula between kinetic energy, capillary energy, viscous dissipation energy and Joule dissipation energy.
