How do subsidiaries sell initiatives to their headquarters? Multilayer decision-makers at corporate headquarters, with divergent interests and power, can overly complicate the acceptance process. We present a multi-case study to explore how subsidiaries of a Chinese multinational enterprise convince top management teams and department heads at their corporate headquarters to engage in foreign investments. Building on a micropolitical perspective, we develop a process model of subsidiary micropolitical strategy adoption consisting of (a) political tension retrieval regarding divergent interests and power at corporate headquarters around specific initiatives, (b) selective coalition building whose interests and power are aligned with the initiatives, and (c) a transitive relation leveraging strategy based on the ties of allied headquarters' managers. We further reveal the interplay between corporate motivations (i.e., market seeking vs. strategic asset seeking) and specific micropolitical activities adopted by subsidiary managers. We enhance the understanding of micropolitics in subsidiary initiatives by underscoring how to strategically manage differences among multilayer actors at corporate headquarters. Additionally, we reveal a political view of foreign investment decision-making in addition to rationality.

In functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), the blood oxygenation level dependent (BOLD) signal is often interpreted as a measure of neural activity. However, because the BOLD signal reflects the complex interplay of neural, vascular, and metabolic processes, such an interpretation is not always valid. There is growing evidence that changes in the baseline neurovascular state can result in significant modulations of the BOLD signal that are independent of changes in neural activity. This paper introduces some of the normalization and calibration methods that have been proposed for making the BOLD signal a more accurate reflection of underlying brain activity for human fMRI studies.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is a noninvasive method for measuring brain function by correlating temporal changes in local cerebral blood oxygenation with behavioral measures. fMRI is used to study individuals at single time points, across multiple time points (with or without intervention), as well as to examine the variation of brain function across normal and ill populations. fMRI may be collected at multiple sites and then pooled into a single analysis. This paper describes how fMRI data is analyzed at each of these levels and describes the noise sources introduced at each level.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common progressive central nervous system neurodegenerative disease globally(1). At present, the treatment of AD involves only symptomatic medications which have continually demonstrated little efficacy(2). Hericium erinaceus (HE), commonly known as lion’s mane mushroom, has not yet been fully utilised among western pharmacology for its medicinal purposes, demonstrating a possible omittance of a highly beneficial neuro-altering substance. To date, studies that have investigated the potential medicinal properties of HE have found that various neuroprotective effects are exerted when following consumption(3). The aim of this review is to systematically investigate the neuroprotective pathways impacted by dietary supplementation of HE, determine specific bio-compounds responsible, and highlight the importance of continued research to determine the true potential relevance of this therapeutic treatment for AD.

Electronic databases were systematically searched for studies investigating the relationship between HE and AD. For inclusion in this review, human studies must have been of a clinical design involving adults >30 years that are healthy, have mild cognitive impairment, probably AD or memory deficits. Animal studies were required to involve interventions that directly impact AD-related mechanisms. The exclusion criteria involved any observational studies that involved participants with other neurological implications, or any studies that noted existing interventions (i.e., medications, post-surgery, dietary intervention). A study quality assessment was conducted for all qualified studies using Cochrane RoB2 tools. Data extraction was undertaken according to PRISMA guidelines.

A total of 16 studies (including 3 human clinical trials and 13 animal model studies) met the criteria for inclusion. All studies included either behavioural, biochemical, ophthalmic, and neuroimaging assessments which demonstrated to be directly influenced by HE intake and highlighted key mechanisms previously associated with neurohealth promotion or neuropathological decline. Behavioural and biochemical clinical trial results revealed statistical differences (p < 0.05) between result comparison between HE and control groups and various week intervals. Animal model behavioural and biochemical assessments demonstrated positive findings. Histological assessments of AD-induced rodents following HE administration revealed statistically significant results (p < 0.05) in cholinergic transmitter and NGF concentrations, β-amyloid peptide plaque accumulation, and microglia and astrocyte activation compared to control groups.

Evidence suggests that an intake of HE, specifically the compound erinacine-A may be an appropriate and relevant candidate for the future therapeutic treatment for the prevention and delayed progression of AD. Application of HE demonstrated numerous improvements in AD-related behaviour, biomarker parameters, histological features, and physiological mechanisms while neuroprotective and neurotrophic properties were also clearly established. Nevertheless, the review highlights the necessity for continued research specifically human clinical trials to contribute continued evidence surrounding the use of HE for AD, to provide direction for future research and provide constructive methods for the possible future targeting of AD populations.

Objectives: Depression is the second most prevalent mental illness among the elderly. Nonetheless, treatment- resistant depression (TRD) is prevalent among the elderly; one-third of elderly patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) who received antidepressant treatment failed to achieve remission. Although there have been several studies regarding the associations between MDD and increased mortality and suicidal risk, studies between TRD and mortality/suicidal risk in the elderly still remains limited. In this national cohort study, we examined the association between TRD, non-TRD MDD, and non-depression with all-cause mortality, accident mortality, and suicide mortality.

Methods: For this retrospective longitudinal analysis on the entire population, the National Health Insurance Research Database of Taiwan, which comprises claims data from a lifetime insurance program and provided comprehensive medical inpatient and outpatient information categorized by ICD-9-CM and ICD-10. The National Mortality Registry offered information regarding mortality resulting from all causes, natural causes, suicide, and accidents. A cohort of ≥60-year-old patients, including both those with and without MDD, was observed between January 2003 and December 2017. Individuals were classified as TRD if they had undergone aminimum of two distinct antidepressant trials within the current episode’s two-year duration and dose, as documented in the prescribing records. Adjusted hazard ratios (aHRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated for mortality risk utilizing Cox regression models.

Results: Among those >60 years old, after adjusting with sex and comorbidities, TRD was associated with increased risk of suicide (aHR 7.4, 95% CI [5.6-9.8]; MDD without TRD 4.4 [4.1- 4.6], compared with non-MDD group). Simliar risk of accident mortality was observed among three groups (TRD aHR 1.3 [0.9-1.9]; MDD without TRD 0.9 [0.9-1.0], compared with non-MDD group). Surprisely, TRD might presented lower mortality risk of natural mortality than the non- MDD group (TRD aHR 0.8 [0.7-0.8]; MDD without TRD 0.9 [0.8-0.9], compared with non- MDD group).

Conclusions: The suicide mortality among elderly patients with TRD is higher in comparison to non-MDD patients; nevertheless, accident mortality does not appear to have increased and the natural mortality rate is reduced. The lower mortality may reflect patient selection, and the contributing factors need further evaluation.

Background: Chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) is a common neurosurgical condition which can be treated with surgical evacuation. A significant percentage of CSDH patients are on antiplatelet or anticoagulation therapy at baseline which may influence risk of recurrence and postoperative thromboembolic events Methods: A search was conducted in MEDLINE (1946 to April 6, 2023), Embase (1974 to April 6, 2023), and PubMed (up to April 6, 2023) on preoperative use of antiplatelet or anticoagulation therapy and outcomes following surgical evacuation of CSDH. Results: Our literature includes 14,410 patients ifrom 42 studies, with 3218 (22%) in the antiplatelet (AP) group, 1731(12%) in the anticoagulation (AC) group, and 9537 (66%) in the no antithrombotics (NA) group. The AP group had significantly higher recurrence compared to NA (OR = 1.21, 95% CI = 1.04 to 1.40, p = 0.01). The AC group also had significantly high recurrence compared to NA (OR = 1.39. 95% CI = 1.15 to 1.68, p = 0.0007). However, being on any antithrombotic therapy is also associated with significantly higher thromboembolic events (OR 5.41, 95% CI 3.16 to 9.26, p < 0.00001). Conclusions: Patients on antithrombotic therapy have both higher recurrence and higher thromboembolic risk compared to patients not on antithrombotic therapy.

Background: The fragility index (FI) is the minimum number of patients whose status would have to change from a nonevent to an event to turn a statistically significant result to a non-significant result. We used this to measure the robustness of trials comparing carotid endarterectomy (CEA) to carotid artery stenting (CAS). Methods: A search was conducted in MEDLINE, Embase, and PubMed on RCTs comparing CEA to CAS. The trials need to have statistically significant results and dichotomous primary endpoints to be included. Results: Our literature search identified 10 RCTs which included 9382 patients (4734 CEA, 4648 CAS). The primary end points of all included trials favoured CEA over CAS. The median FI was 9.5 (interquartile range 2.25 - 21.25). All of the studies that reported lost-to-follow-up (LTFU) had LTFU greater than its fragility index, which raises concern that the missing data could change the results of the trial from statistically significant to statistically insignificant. Conclusions: A small number of events (FI, median 9.5) were required to render the results of carotid artery stenosis RCTs comparing CEA to CAS statistically insignificant. All of the studies that reported LTFU had LTFU greater than its fragility index.

Background: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak is a common complication of minimally invasive tubular microdiscectomy (MIM). However, it is not known whether patients with CSF leak can be safely discharged home the same day. Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study of patients with incidental durotomy after MIM from January, 2009 to August, 2023. Patient demographic information, surgery information, CSF leak management, and postoperative outcomes were recorded. Results: There were 16 patients (53%) who were admitted to hospital and 14 (47%) patients discharged home the same day post CSF leak. There were no differences in patient demographics between the two groups at baseline. Twenty-nine out of 30 (97%) of the patients had onlay duraplasty, and one (3%) patient was repaired using sutures. The hospitalized group was kept on bed rest overnight or 24 hours. The discharge group was kept on best rest for 2 hours or mobilized immediately after surgery. The average length of admission for the hospitalized group was 2.4 ± 4.0 days. No patients in either group required readmission or revision surgery for CSF leak. Conclusions: Patients with CSF leak post minimally invasive tubular microdiscectomy can be safely discharged home the same day provided that duraplasty or primary repair was performed intraoperatively.

Background: Tethered cord syndrome, a condition in which the spinal cord stretches as a child grows, can cause various clinical symptoms. Occult TCS (OTCS) is a condition where a child displays some or many clinical symptoms of TCS, but no radiographic abnormality confirms the presence of a tethered cord (1-4). Diagnosis of OTCS in children is invasive and multi-factorial. The current diagnostic approach involves three main factors- clinical signs and symptoms, radiographic evidence, and motor evoked potentials (MEPs) tested under general anesthesia. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive testing method for OTCS. It can replace MEPs, which are conducted under general anesthesia. Methods: We will conduct a case-control series of children at our center who have undergone TMS. We will characterize the children who have TCS and suspected OTCS and detail the children’s current diagnosis methods and outcomes in a technical note. We will then compare their pre-operative and post-operative data. Results: So far, we have conducted TMS on 10 children to help diagnose occult TCS. Conclusions: This approach is a novel and effective way to improve the accuracy of diagnosis in children, potentially preventing unnecessary surgery, or detecting patients who would otherwise suffer from the condition.

Ultrafast optical probing is a widely used method of underdense plasma diagnostic. In relativistic plasma, the motion blur limits spatial resolution in the direction of motion. For many high-power lasers the initial pulse duration of 30–50 fs results in a 10–15 μm motion blur, which can be reduced by probe pulse post-compression. Here we used the compression after compressor approach [Phys.-Usp. 62, 1096 (2019); JINST 17 P07035 (2022)], where spectral broadening is performed in thin optical plates and is followed by reflections from negative-dispersion mirrors. Our initially low-intensity probe beam was down-collimated for a more efficient spectral broadening and higher probe-to-self-emission intensity ratio. The setup is compact, fits in a vacuum chamber and can be implemented within a short experimental time slot. We proved that the compressed pulse retained the high quality necessary for plasma probing.

Let G be a finite group. A subgroup A of G is said to be S-permutable in G if A permutes with every Sylow subgroup P of G, that is, $AP=PA$. Let $A_{sG}$ be the subgroup of A generated by all S-permutable subgroups of G contained in A and $A^{sG}$ be the intersection of all S-permutable subgroups of G containing A. We prove that if G is a soluble group, then S-permutability is a transitive relation in G if and only if the nilpotent residual $G^{\mathfrak {N}}$ of G avoids the pair $(A^{s G}, A_{sG})$, that is, $G^{\mathfrak {N}}\cap A^{sG}= G^{\mathfrak {N}}\cap A_{sG}$ for every subnormal subgroup A of G.

Water droplets containing the SARS-CoV-2 virus, responsible for coronavirus 2019 transmission, were introduced into a controlled-temperature and -humidity chamber. The SARS-CoV-2 virus with green fluorescent protein tag in droplets was used to infect Caco-2 cells, with viability assessed through flow cytometry and microscopic counting. Whereas temperature fluctuations within typical indoor ranges (20°C–30°C) had minimal impact, we observed a notable decrease in infection rate as the surrounding air’s relative humidity increased. By investigating humidity levels between 20% and 70%, we identified a threshold of ≥40% relative humidity as most effective in diminishing SARS-CoV-2 infectivity. We also found that damage of the viral proteins under high relative humidity may be responsible for the decrease in their activity. This outcome supports previous research demonstrating a rise in the concentration of reactive oxygen species within water droplets with elevated relative humidity.

Vortex shedding in the wake of a cylinder in uniform flow can be suppressed via the application of a porous coating; however, the suppression mechanism is not fully understood. The internal flow field of a porous coated cylinder (PCC) can provide a deeper understanding of how the flow within the porous medium affects the wake development. A structured PCC (SPCC) was three-dimensionally printed using a transparent material and tested in water tunnel facilities using flow visualisation and tomographic particle image velocimetry at outer-diameter Reynolds numbers of $Re = 7 \times 10^{3}$ and $7.3 \times 10^{4}$, respectively. The internal and near-wall flow fields are analysed at the windward and mid-circumference regions. Flow stagnation is observed in the porous layer on the windward side and its boundary is shown to fluctuate with time in the outermost porous layer. This stagnation region generates a quasi-aerodynamic body that influences boundary layer development on the SPCC inner diameter, that separates into a shear layer within the porous medium. For the first time via experiment, spectral content within the separated shear layer reveals vortex shedding processes emanating through single pores at the outer diameter, providing strong evidence that SPCC vortex shedding originates from the inner diameter. Velocity fluctuations linked to this vortex shedding propagate through the porous layers into the external flow field at a velocity less than that of the free stream. The Strouhal number linked to this velocity accurately predicts the SPCC vortex shedding frequency.

The target backsheath field acceleration mechanism is one of the main mechanisms of laser-driven proton acceleration (LDPA) and strongly depends on the comprehensive performance of the ultrashort ultra-intense lasers used as the driving sources. The successful use of the SG-II Peta-watt (SG-II PW) laser facility for LDPA and its applications in radiographic diagnoses have been manifested by the good performance of the SG-II PW facility. Recently, the SG-II PW laser facility has undergone extensive maintenance and a comprehensive technical upgrade in terms of the seed source, laser contrast and terminal focus. LDPA experiments were performed using the maintained SG-II PW laser beam, and the highest cutoff energy of the proton beam was obviously increased. Accordingly, a double-film target structure was used, and the maximum cutoff energy of the proton beam was up to 70 MeV. These results demonstrate that the comprehensive performance of the SG-II PW laser facility was improved significantly.
