The stellar content of young massive star clusters emit large amounts of Lyman continuum photons and inject momentum into the inter stellar medium (ISM) by the strong stellar winds of the most massive stars in the cluster. When the most massive stars explode as supernovae, large amounts of mechanical energy are injected in the ISM. A detailed study of the ISM around these massive cluster provides insights on the effect of cluster feedback.

We present high quality integral field spectroscopy taken with VLT/MUSE of two starburst galaxies: ESO 338-IG04 and Haro 11. Both galaxies contain a significant number of super star clusters. The MUSE data provide us with an unprecedented view of the state and kinematics of the ionized gas in the galaxy allowing us to study the effect of stellar feedback on small and large spatial scales. We present our recent results on studying the ISM state of these two galaxies. The data of both galaxies show that the mechanical and ionization feedback of the super star clusters in the galaxy modify the state and kinematics of the ISM substancially by creating highly ionized bubbles around the cluster, making the central part of the galaxy highly ionized. This shows that the HII regions around the individual clusters are density bounded, allowing the ionizing photons to escape and ionize the ISM further out.

The MIRAGE sample (Merging & isolated high-redshift AMR galaxies; Perret 2014, PhD dissertation; Perret et al. 2014, AA 562, 1) has been built in order to understand the contribution of the merger processes to the mass assembly in the MASSIV (Mass Assembly Survey with SINFONI in VVDS, Contini et al. 2012, AA 539, 91) sample. It consists of a sample of idealized simulations based on the RAMSES code; the initial conditions were designed to reproduce the physical properties of the most gas-rich young galaxies. The sample is composed of 20 simulations of mergers exploring the initial parameters of mass and orientation of the disks with a spatial resolution reaching 7 parsecs.

The ionised gas regions, which are the main tracers of the spiral arms, can be used for the study and determination of the spiral structure of our Galaxy. Towards this goal, the Marseille Observatory elaborated and developed an instrument, using a scanning Fabry–Perot interferometer, particularly suited for the observation of extended objects. A survey of the southern Galactic plane then started at the beginning of 1990. The major instrumental aim is to obtain spectral information, and therefore the ionised gas kinematics, in each pixel of the observed fields. Already 300 fields of 38′×38′ have been observed in Hα with a spatial resolution of 9″×9″, covering almost the entire fourth quadrant of the Galactic plane, and numerous discrete HII regions have been detected, as well as diffuse emission which is widely distributed. Also, the Magellanic Clouds have been studied using the same instrument.

We report the results of a kinematic Hα survey of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) in the form of a kinematic and photometric catalogue of 210 HII regions, the radial velocity field of the ionized hydrogen in this galaxy, and the LMC Rotation Curve obtained from the velocity field. These data aim at understanding the LMC HII regions, bubbles and superbubbles in a global (galactic) scale so that we could have a 3D view and separate the rotation due to gravitational potential from other motions such as expansions.

We present a kinematical study of the marginally edge-on galaxy ESO 379-006. With Fabry-Perot spectroscopy at Hα we obtain velocity maps, the radial velocity field, and position-velocity diagrams parallel to the major and to the minor axis of the galaxy. We build the rotation curve of the galaxy and discuss the role of projection effects. The twisting of isovelocities in the radial velocity field of the disk of ESO 379-006 as well as a kinematical asymmetry found in the position-velocity diagrams parallel to the minor axis suggest the existence of non-circular motions that can be modeled by including a radial inflow besides the rotation motion. Extraplanar Diffuse Ionized gas was detected in this galaxy both from the images and from its kinematics. It is possible that the diffuse gas is lagging in rotation.

MASSIV (Mass Assembly Survey with SINFONI in VVDS) is an ESO large program which consists of 84 star-forming galaxies, spanning a wide range of stellar masses, observed with the IFU SINFONI on the VLT, in the redshift range 1 ≤ z ≤ 2. To be representative of the normal galaxy population, the sample has been selected from a well-defined, complete and representative parent sample. The kinematics of individual galaxies reveals that 58% of the galaxies are slow rotators, which means that a high fraction of these galaxies should probably be formed through major merger processes which might have produced gaseous thick or spheroidal structures supported by velocity dispersion rather than by rotation. Computations on the major merger rate from close pairs indicate that a typical star-forming galaxy underwent ~0.4 major mergers in the last ~9.5 Gyr, showing that merging is a major process driving mass assembly into the red sequence galaxies. These objects are also intriguing due to the fact that more than one galaxy over four is more metal-rich in its outskirts than in its center.

Understanding the different mechanisms of galaxy assembly at various cosmic epochs is a key issue for galaxy evolution and formation models. We present MASSIV (Mass Assembly Survey with SINFONI in VVDS) in this context, an on-going survey with VLT/SINFONI aiming to probe the kinematics and chemical abundances of a unique sample of 84 star-forming galaxies selected in the redshift range z ~ 1−2. This large sample, spanning a wide range of stellar masses, is unique at these high redshifts and statistically representative of the overall galaxy population. In this paper, we give an overview of the MASSIV survey and then focus on the spatially-resolved chemical properties of high-z galaxies and their implication on the process of galaxy assembly.

We present the results of a multiwavelength campaign searching for young objects in the intragroup medium of seven compact groups of galaxies: HCG 2, 7, 22, 23, 92, 100 and NGC 92. We used Fabry-Perot velocity fields and rotation curves together with GALEX NUV and FUV images, optical R-band and HI maps to evaluate the stage of interaction of each group. We conclude that groups (i) HCG 7 and HCG 23 are in an early stage of interaction, (ii) HCG 2 and HCG 22 are mildly interacting, and (iii) HCG 92, HCG 100 and NGC 92 are in a late stage of evolution. Evolved groups have a population of young objects in their intragroup medium while no such population is found within the less evolved groups. We also report the discovery of a tidal dwarf galaxy candidate in the tail of NGC 92. These three groups, besides containing galaxies which have peculiar velocity fields, also show extended HI tails. Our results indicate that the advanced stage of evolution of a group together with the presence of intragroup HI clouds may lead to star formation in the intragroup medium.

This is an ongoing project.

During last few years, new instruments like GIRAFFE (Flores, H., Hammer, F., Puech, M., et al., 2006, A&A 455,107) or SINFONI (Förster Schreiber, N.M., Genzel, R., Lehnert, M.D., et al., 2006, ApJ 645,1062) have began investigations on 3D kinematics of high redshift galaxies. This is just the head of the iceberg as Extremely Large Telescope will allow this kind of study on a larger sample. By now, it is important to be able to recover the actual kinematic parameters, and overall to disentangle evolutionnary effects from distance effects.

Blue Compact Galaxies (BCGs) have received interest mainly because they comprise the best available test-beds for studies of low-metallicity star formation (SF) and allow the study of relatively unevolved systems at low redshift. Their ongoing phase of intense star formation is a transient phenomenon and the best candidates for its trigger are interactions and mergers. Studies of the kinematics are important for the understanding of this process.

We present spatially resolved kinematics from the Hα line in five BCGs that show an extended region of ionised emission around the central starburst. We find this region to have near-spherical isophotes at large radii and to be dynamically decoupled from a central disturbance. A scenario where the strong triggered star formation in the center ionises the surrounding gas cloud, still following its original motions, can qualitatively explain these common features. We present Hα emission line velocity fields of two Low Surface Brightness galaxies (LSBs) - UGC 628 and UGC 5005 - obtained using Fabry-Perot (FP) interferometry observations at the Canada-France-Hawaii telescope. Our goal is to study the dynamics of LSBs.

We present results from an ongoing survey of the ionized gas kinematics in Virgo cluster spiral galaxies using Fabry-Perot (FP) interferometry. Our goal is to study the environmental effects on galaxy evolution in the Virgo cluster. We report here on the Hα distribution map and velocity field of NGC 4438, an interacting galaxy near the centre of the cluster.

We present a database of galaxies rotation curve (from Hα observations), including our Galaxy.

A candidate Tidal Dwarf Galaxy, ce-61, was identified in the merger system IC 1182 in the Hercules supercluster. The multi-wavelength data we obtained so far do not prove, however, that it is kinematically detached from the IC 1182 system and gravitationally bound.

We describe a long-term program based on Fabry-Perot Hα velocity field data of compact groups taken at the ESO and the CFH 3.6m telescopes. The main goals of our project are: 1) determine the evolutionary stages of the studied groups, 2) search for tidal dwarf galaxy candidates in interacting systems and 3) in combination with photometry available in the literature, determine the Tully-Fisher relation for the group galaxies. In this paper we summarize all the Hα Fabry-Perot data we have obtained to date and present a preliminary discussion of point 1).

The sample of 18 systems (with 64 galaxies) studied here contain groups at a variety of dynamical stages: from a false group that is in fact one single irregular galaxy with several star-forming blobs (e.g. HCG 18) to a group whose members are strongly interacting and possibly forming tidal dwarf galaxies (e.g. HCG 92) to a group in the final process of merging (e.g. HCG 31). A companion paper (Amram and Mendes de Oliveira, 2000) shows examples of galaxy velocity fields for groups in different dynamical stages.

We have been conducting a Fabry-Perot kinematic survey of ionized gas in the Magellanic Clouds in the Hα and [O III]λ5007 lines, using a 36-cm telescope at the European Southern Observatory. This poster presents our kinematic study of HII regions located at the northwestern parts of the LMC bar.

The detailed radial velocity field of the H II region N105, in the LMC, has been obtained for the Hα and [O III] 5007 lines with a spatial sampling of 9″ and a spectral sampling of 16 and 7kms−1. The peculiar velocity field and morphology indicate that N105 contains four bubble shaped nebulae and two bright distinct quasi-spherical H II regions, more or less coeval, embedded inside another large shell nebula. They are essentially formed by the action of stellar winds of a few exciting stars, born deep inside their parental cloud. This result is deduced from the energy input inside the ionized gas by the stellar winds of early type stars and from dynamical simulations combining the effects of stellar winds with those of high density gradients inside the neutral gas. The size and morphology of the H II region are conditioned by the depth inside the natal cloud; the observed dynamical time-scale of the H II region starts at the moment of blow-out of the molecular cloud.

The Marseille Observatory Hα survey supplies Hα velocities of the ionized hydrogen over large zones of the sky towards the galactic plane. This survey, led at the ESO La Silla, uses a 36 cm telescope equiped with a scanning Fabry-Perot interferometer and a photon counting camera (Le Coarer et al. 1992). About 250 fields (39′×39′) toward the galactic plane have already been covered (see Figure 1) with a spatial resolution of 9″×9″ and a spectral resolution of 5 km s–1. This allows us to observe the discrete HII regions and the diffuse ionized gas widely distributed between them and to separate the distinct layers found along the line of sight. HII regions are often grouped on the molecular cloud surface, then CO, radio continuum and recombination lines surveys of the galactic plane are also essential to distinguish the HII region-molecular cloud complexes met on the line of sight, and in order to take dynamical effects into account, such as the champagne effect, for the kinematic distance determination. Indeed, the spiral structure pattern determination requires avoiding any artificial spread by clearly identifying the giant complexes composed of molecular clouds, HII regions, diffuse ionized hydrogen widely surrounding them, and exciting stars. On the other hand the ionized gas data (Hα and recombination lines) associated with IRAS data help us to study the nature of the young objects constituent of these complexes and to assess their detectability. We present two fields from the Hα survey and parallel large scale investigations.

The LMC is being surveyed in the Hα emission line with a scanning Fabry-Perot interferometer, attached to the 36 cm telescope of the Observatoire de Marseille. The present results concern the kinematical mapping of bright nebulae; it shows that the kinetic energy involved in the gas motion is closely related to the evolutionary stage of the embedded stars. In particular, in the 30 Dor nebula, a few one-peaked line profiles remain at the boundaries of the shells, among the numerous split areas. The 50-100 pc shells exhibit a relatively usual spherical expansion, with velocities in the same range at the boundaries. On the contrary, the 10-20 pc shells of the central core show different velocities of the one-peak sides of the shells.

An Hα Survey of the Milky Way is being led at La Silla with a small telescope equipped with a scanning Fabry-Perot interferometer and IPCS. This Survey gives detailed Hα maps with a 9” spatial resolution and radial velocity maps with a 5km/s resolution. About 200 fields (38’×38’) have been already observed along the galactic plane. They furnish mosaics ranging from galactic longitude 234° to 350°. Combined with distances of exciting stars and radio data our kinematic data of the ionized gas enable to draw precisely the spiral arms of our Galaxy. Examples of the results obtained are given for galactic longitudes 234°, 283°, 290°, 298°, 328° and 338°.
