Whether colliding drops will merge with or bounce off each other is critical to numerous processes, and the physics involved is notoriously complex. In particular, experiments show that both sufficiently slow and fast head-on drop collisions lead to merging, but that there is often an intermediate regime in which bouncing is observed; these transitions in behaviour were recently discovered to be surprisingly sensitive to the radius of the drops and the ambient gas pressure. We show here that these transitions between bouncing and merging are governed by nanoscale phenomena; namely, gas-kinetic and disjoining pressure effects. To capture these crucial effects, a novel, open-source computational model is developed for the simulation of colliding drops. The model uses a hybrid approach, based on solving the Navier–Stokes equations in the drop with a lubrication approach for the unconventional physics of the gas film. Our simulations show remarkably good agreement with experiments of head-on collisions and also provide new experimentally verifiable predictions.

Austrian capital theory tried to capture the intuitive and basically undeniable importance that time plays in economic life, but arguably was diverted down a blind alley with Eugen von Böhm-Bawerk’s average period of production, a purely physical measure of ‘roundaboutness’—the length of the production process. For the general case, such a measure is a chimera. But the intuition is strong, and the idea survived and reappeared at various points in the history of capital theory. Almost unknown to economists, an alternative value measure of roundaboutness has existed at least since John Hicks’s formulation of his average period (AP) in 1939, which, coincidentally, was exactly the same measure discovered by the financial actuary Frederick Macaulay in 1938, called by him “Duration” (D). Macaulay’s D, more richly interpreted as Hicks’s AP, is a measure that more appropriately captures what it was that the Austrians struggled to express over many years in their capital theory and in their analysis of the business cycle.

At the June 2016 meeting of the International Association for Chinese Management Research, MOR organized a symposium to discuss the mounting criticisms of empirical social science and subsequent changes, as part of ongoing discussions affecting journal reviewing policies. This article overviews the history of modern empirical social science as the foundation of management, organization, and strategy research and the criticism of social science research, which has reached the point that some critics refer to current publication norms as encouraging and enabling the publication of junk science. Most importantly, however, this article outlines MOR's strategy going forward and the new reviewing initiatives that MOR is implementing as of Volume 13 (2017).

Ludwig von Mises seems to be something of an outlier within the Austrian school when it comes to capital – though his position is clearly foreshadowed in a neglected article by Carl Menger (1888). In this paper, we examine Mises's view on capital and suggest that it constitutes a bridge between Austrian and institutional economics. As an outflow of Mises's approach, an incipient financial approach may be discerned, an approach to capital that integrates concepts from financial theory into a broader view of capital that contains both institutional and Austrian elements.
