Successful employment outcomes are often beyond the reach of people with disabilities, but relatively little is known about the factors that best enable the achievement of this goal. Using survey data from 803 people with and without disabilities, we examine the association of eight factors with successful employment outcomes. Using regression tree analysis, five factors emerged as statistically significant predictors of successful employment outcomes for people with disabilities: corporate culture and climate, job characteristics, government support, employer attitudes, and societal attitudes. Key interrelationships between factors include: (1) government support linking with corporate culture and climate; and (2) job characteristics linking with corporate culture and climate. Findings are relevant to organisations and governments to inform policy and practice to improve employment outcomes for people with disabilities.

This article provides an overview of selected ongoing international efforts that have been inspired by Edward Zigler's vision to improve programs and policies for young children and families in the United States. The efforts presented are in close alignment with three strategies articulated by Edward Zigler: (a) conduct research that will inform policy advocacy; (b) design, implement, and revise quality early childhood development (ECD) programs; and (c) invest in building the next generation of scholars and advocates in child development. The intergenerational legacy left by Edward Zigler has had an impact on young children not only in the United States, but also across the globe. More needs to be done. We need to work together with a full commitment to ensure the optimal development of each child.

Oregon's Fort Rock Cave is iconic in respect to both the archaeology of the northern Great Basin and the history of debate about when the Great Basin was colonized. In 1938, Luther Cressman recovered dozens of sagebrush bark sandals from beneath Mt. Mazama ash that were later radiocarbon dated to between 10,500 and 9350 cal B.P. In 1970, Stephen Bedwell reported finding lithic tools associated with a date of more than 15,000 cal B.P., a date dismissed as unreasonably old by most researchers. Now, with evidence of a nearly 15,000-year-old occupation at the nearby Paisley Five Mile Point Caves, we returned to Fort Rock Cave to evaluate the validity of Bedwell's claim, assess the stratigraphic integrity of remaining deposits, and determine the potential for future work at the site. Here, we report the results of additional fieldwork at Fort Rock Cave undertaken in 2015 and 2016, which supports the early Holocene occupation, but does not confirm a pre–10,500 cal B.P. human presence.

Background: Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a neurocutaneous disorder with a wide spectrum of manifestations. Recent consensus recommendations stress the importance of multidisciplinary management of children with TSC. The objective of this study was to examine the manifestations of TSC at a large referral centre to determine the care needs of this population. Methods: A retrospective, systematic chart review was performed of children with TSC managed at British Columbia Children’s Hospital. Patients were identified through epilepsy and clinical neurophysiology databases. Results: The study population comprised 81 patients, born between 1987 and 2014, who were a median of 10 years (range, 0.2-23.2) at most recent follow-up. Epilepsy occurred in 91% of patients, including 32% with a history of infantile spasms. Nineteen patients underwent epilepsy surgery, nine (47%) of whom were seizure-free at most recent follow-up. Overall, 61% of epilepsy patients had been seizure-free for at least 1 year at the time of last follow-up. Neuropsychiatric disorders were diagnosed in 49% of children, with autism (25%), attention deficit hyperactivity order (19%) and anxiety (16%) being the most common. Cardiac rhabdomyomata occurred in 35% of children and renal angiomyolipomas were seen in 43%. A total of 91% had skin manifestations. Conclusion: This study outlines the multisystem manifestations of TSC, observed through a large pediatric referral center. Epilepsy and neuropsychiatric disorders are the major source of morbidity in this age group and provide many challenges to the treating clinician. Because a subset of the study population is still quite young, the prevalence of neuropsychiatric disorders is likely underestimated.

Prior studies have found no adverse effects of pediatric epilepsy surgery on IQ. However, empirical techniques such as regression models, designed to account for confounding factors such as practice effects and test–retest reliability and able to provide a standardized method for evaluating outcome, have not been used in studying change after pediatric epilepsy. The goal of this study was to demonstrate the regression technique while empirically measuring the effect of epilepsy surgery on IQ in a group of pediatric patients. Predictors of retest IQ (e.g., baseline IQ, retest interval, demographics, epilepsy severity) were evaluated in a control group with intractable seizures (N = 23) assessed twice with the WISC–III. The resulting equation was used to evaluate IQ changes in a second group of children who underwent epilepsy surgery (N = 22). In controls, baseline IQ was a strong predictor of retest IQ. Number of AEDs was inversely related to retest IQ. Based on the control regression, four children (18%) in the surgical sample obtained significantly higher than expected postsurgical IQ scores and one child (5%) obtained a lower than expected IQ score. This study demonstrates that regression-based techniques yield informative estimates on outcome and may be an improvement over prior methods of measuring change after pediatric epilepsy surgery. This article draws upon data from an in-depth ethnographic study of 5 and 6 year old children in an English multi-ethnic, inner-city primary school. It focuses on the significance of ‘race’ within young girls' peer-group relations and the ways in which the social dynamics that underlie those relations provide the context for understanding the particular nature and form that racism takes among the girls. This is done through a focus on the experiences of South Asian girls within the group. Within this, the article has two main aims. First, it aims to contribute to the literature within the sociology of education by extending the existing research focus on racism within teacher/pupil interactions to include an understanding of racism as it manifests itself among the children's peer-group relations. Second, in adapting and applying Pierre Bourdieu's concepts of capital and field, the article also offers a contribution to the literature within the sociology of ‘race’ and ethnicity by suggesting one potentially fruitful way in which racism can be understood within specific social contexts.

Black mould lesions were caused by Alternaria alternata in 76% of 228 tomato fruit with characteristic sunken black lesions collected from fields of processing tomatoes in California. Analysis of 29 RAPD primers revealed a high level of genetic diversity among the 69 isolates tested. Two major phenetic groups (Group 1 with 55 isolates and Group 2 with 14) were identified independently by PCA and by UPGMA of Jaccard similarity coefficients. Only 34 of 137 RAPD markers were monomorphic for all isolates and the genetic similarity between the two groups was 50%. Co-infection of black mould lesions by genetically distinct strains of A. alternata occurred in two of 10 isolates tested. There was no evidence for geographic clustering of isolates with high levels of genetic similarity, suggesting that isolates are widely dispersed across California. Only one isolate was identified which also caused stem canker disease on a susceptible tomato cv., suggesting that these strains play a minor role in causing black mould on processing tomatoes in California. This isolate and two other known stem canker isolates were clustered together with 11 other isolates in Group 2. Group 2-specific bands were also identified in a survey of seven additional isolates known to produce host-specific toxins.
