This study hypothesized that the signal grass (Urochloa decumbens [Stapf] R. Webster) modifies its structural and productive characteristics under a silvopasture system with legume trees. The treatments were composed of (i) signal grass in monoculture and (ii) a silvopasture system intercropping signal grass + Mimosa caesalpiniifolia Benth. a legume tree, over two consecutive years. The experiment was set in a completely randomized block design with three replications. Grazing was carried out by cattle with an average body weight (BW) of 186 ± 26 kg. The type of system had no significant effect on the structural and productive characteristics of signal grass. In the first grazing season, the greatest canopy height (54 cm) and total forage mass (6473 kg DM/ha) occurred in the dry period. The leaf:stem ratio was greater in the rainy season. Forage accumulation (515 kg DM/ha/28 days) and forage accumulation rate (18 kg DM/ha/day) were greater in the rainy season. Higher total forage production (4583 kg DM/ha) occurred in the first grazing season. The silvopasture with double rows spaced 25 m apart and with a tree density of 600 plants/ha did not compromise the structural and productivity characteristics of the signal grass pasture. The legume M. caesalpiniifolia has the potential for use as an arboreal component in silvopasture systems with signal grass.
Introduction: Recurrent major depressive disorder (MDD) has been associated with cognitive impairment and hippocampus atrophy. Additionally, in older adults it is related to increased dementia risk, as well as being dementia’s prodromal syndrome.
Case Report: A 68-year-old female patient, with a history of MDD beginning in 2014, has been under the care of the Psychogeriatrics service at HC-UFMG. In 2015, she was 60-year-old and underwent her first MRI scan. At that time, the Medial Temporal Atrophy Score (MTA) was 2 and she had a treatment resistant depression (TRD). She began multimodal treatments, including ECT, achieving only partial remission. Since then, the patient had recurrences of depression without the remission of cognitive impairment. In 2021, her MTA Score was still 2 with TDR symptoms. Currently, she is on Venlafaxine 150mg, Mirtazapine 30mg, Lithium 300mg, Olanzapine 5mg, Clonazepam 0.25mg and maintenance ECT every 45 days. The patient remains with cognitive impairment that leads to disabilities but had not significantly progressed. On the other hand, the main impact in functionality is related to depressive symptoms, especially to the loss of interest and apathy.
Discussion: This case stands out due to the combination of hippocampal atrophy at a relatively young age and severe depression with cognitive impairment that has not progressed to dementia in 9 years. Severe depression can lead to significant cognitive deficits, as well as, hippocampus atrophy. While depression is related to hippocampus atrophy, it has not been related to TRD in a review study with Voxel-Based Morphometry. Conversely, Alzheimer’s Disease is related to MTA ≥2 scores, as well as depressive symptoms. MTA 2 in a person of 60 years of age is not considered normal. When combined with cognitive impairment, these findings are generally related to neurodegeneration. Since both MTA and cognitive deficits were relatively stable, the hypothesis of a cognitive impairment and hippocampus atrophy due to depression were more likely.
Conclusions: MDD leads to cognitive impairment in older adults, as well as hippocampus atrophy. Nevertheless, depression and age are important risk factors for dementia and, therefore, a progression to dementia due to a neurodegenerative disease is still possible.
In this article, we consider some critical Brézis-Nirenberg problems in dimension $N \geq 3$ that do not have a solution. We prove that a supercritical perturbation can lead to the existence of a positive solution. More precisely, we consider the equation:
where $B \subset \mathbb{R}^N$ is a unit ball centred at the origin, $N\geq 3$, $r=\vert x \vert$, $\alpha \in (0,\min\{N/2,N-2\})$, λ is a fixed real parameter and $q\in [2,2^*]$. This class of problems can be interpreted as a perturbation of the classical Brézis–Nirenberg problem by the term rα at the exponent, making the problem supercritical when $r \in (0,1)$. More specifically, we study the effect of this supercritical perturbation on the existence of solutions. In particular, when N = 3, an interesting and unexpected phenomenon occurs. We obtain the existence of solutions for λ in a range where the Brézis–Nirenberg problem has no solution.
Obesity is a chronic, complex and multi-factorial condition with an increasing prevalence worldwide. Irregular eating schedules might be a contributing factor to these numbers through the dysregulation of the circadian system. Time-restricted eating (TRE), an approach that limits eating windows, has been studied as a strategy to treat obesity, aligning eating occasions with metabolic circadian rhythms. This review aims to provide an overview of the impact of TRE protocols on metabolic, inflammatory, oxidative stress and circadian rhythm biomarkers in people with overweight or obesity. Most studies report significant weight loss following TRE protocols. While glucose levels decreased in nearly all TRE interventions, only a few studies demonstrated statistically significant differences when compared to the control groups. The findings for c-reactive protein and TNF-α were inconsistent, with limited significant differences. Changes in lipid profile changes were variable and generally did not reach statistical significance. Both 4-hour and 6-hour TRE interventions significantly reduced 8-isoprostane levels. Additionally, TRE significantly altered clock gene expression, as well as that of genes associated with metabolic regulation in subcutaneous adipose tissue. While the evidence is still inconsistent, limiting eating to a consistent daily window of 8 to 12 h can improve insulin sensitivity, reduce blood glucose, cholesterol and triglyceride levels and promote weight loss. These effects are likely attributable to both direct metabolic impacts and indirect benefits from weight loss and improved dietary habits. However, data on circadian, inflammatory and specific metabolic biomarkers remain scarce and occasionally contradictory, highlighting the need for further research on these interventions.
Temperature increase may cause some regions in the world to become marginal or unsuitable for Arabica coffee cultivation, due to either heat and/or marked water deficit. The feasibility of sustainable coffee production in these regions promotes good opportunity of income and value addition for rural producers within an expanding market. This study aimed to identify short-stature Arabica coffee cultivars with the best agronomic and qualitative performance in a low-altitude region. The experiment was located in northeastern São Paulo state, Brazil, at 565 m above sea level. During the experimental period (2014–2018) the average annual and November temperatures were 23.0 and 24.3°C, respectively, with an average annual water deficit of 109 mm. The experimental design was randomized blocks, with four replicates, and the treatments consisted of 17 short-stature cultivars. The cultivars Catuaí Amarelo IAC 62, Catuaí Vermelho IAC 99, IAC Ouro Amarelo, Obatã IAC 1669-20, Obatã IAC 4739, Tupi IAC 1699-33, IAC 125 RN and IPR 100 stood out in terms of yield, reaching approximately 50 bags/ha. The appropriate choice of Arabica coffee cultivar in a low-altitude region may result in yield increment of up to 74%. The cultivars Catuaí Vermelho IAC 99, Tupi IAC 1699-33 and IAC 125 RN produced grains with the best quality and highest hundred-grain weight, processing yield and percentage of grains retained on sieve 17. Therefore, it is possible for an Arabica coffee cultivar to have high yield and high grain and beverage quality in a low-altitude region, promoting production alternatives for farmers.
The objective was to evaluate the performance of suckling piglets based on their choice of mammary gland. A completely randomized design was used, considering the position of the mammary glands pair and their respective piglets as experimental unit. The mammary gland position was considered for the treatments, being 1st, 4th and 7th pair. The ration and leftovers were weighed daily to obtain daily feed intake of the sow. On post-natal day (PND) 3 and 21, 80 ml of milk was collected to analyse crude protein, fat, lactose, non-fatty solids, mineral matter and total solids. On PND 3 and 21, the piglets were weighed to determine weight gain and estimate milk consumption. The piglets' longitudinal length and head circumference were measured in the same period and estimated body surface area/mass ratio. Blood samples from the sows and piglets were collected on PND 3 and 21 to analyse total cholesterol, triglycerides, total protein, fractions and glucose. There was an effect of mammary gland position on piglets at PND 21 suckling on the 7th pair, which had a 23.88 cm2/kg greater body surface/mass ratio compared to those who suckled in the 1st pair. In turn, at PND 21, the piglets that suckled in the 1st pair presented higher weight, weight gain and milk consumption (0.685, 0.033 and 0.127 kg, respectively) than those that suckled in the 7th pair. Anterior mammary glands result in better productive performance and better chances of maintaining piglet homeostasis at PND 21.
The interest in the search for alternatives to antibiotics in poultry production has been increasing, especially with the focus on essential oils due to their remarkable bioactive properties. This study aimed to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation of essential oils on the performance and gut morphometry of broilers, by using an approach of systematic review and meta-analysis. In the conduction of the systematic review, three electronic databases (PubMed, Science Direct and Scielo) were consulted in January 2023. Out of an initial amount of 162 papers, only 27 met the requisites to be included in the database. Furthermore, after the use of established criteria for the meta-analysis, only 16 papers were qualified for the evaluation of the aimed parameters. In the meta-analysis, it was observed that the supplementation had significant impact (P < 0.05) of 2.88% in weight gain, in comparison to the basal diet. In addition, the supplementation of essential oils significantly improved (P < 0.05) gut morphometry parameters such as villus height in the ileum (15.66% higher), and 8.26% increase in the villus height to crypt depth ratio in jejunum compared to the basal diet. Dietary essential oils improve the growth performance and gut histomorphometry of broilers, even when combined with antibiotics as growth promoters.
Over the last few years, during the pandemic, the Brazilian population has suffered several problems, ranging from health to socioeconomic impacts. When we consider Brazilian science, there has been an undeniable scientific delay generated by the pandemic, especially in areas that are not related to the coronavirus. In this context, with the aim of fostering collaboration among researchers in the field of Developmental Origins of Health and Diseases (DOHaD) and enhancing the potential for implementing public health strategies to prevent noncommunicable chronic diseases, the Brazilian Association of Developmental Origins of Health and Diseases (DOHaD Brazil) was established in 2020. In this narrative, we explore the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil, focusing on its impacts on scientific research conducted in universities. Additionally, we underscore the significance of the DOHaD Brazil Association, particularly from the perspective of young researchers engaged in DOHaD research in Brazil.
The symbiosis between microorganisms and host arthropods can cause biological, physiological, and reproductive changes in the host population. The present study aimed to survey facultative symbionts of the genera Wolbachia, Arsenophonus, Cardinium, Rickettsia, and Nosema in Cotesia flavipes (Cameron) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) and Diatraea saccharalis (Fabricius) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) in the laboratory and evaluate the influence of infection on the fitness of these hosts. For this purpose, 16S rDNA primers were used to detect these facultative symbionts in the host species, and the hosts' biological and morphological features were evaluated for changes resulting from the infection caused by these microorganisms. The bacterial symbionts studied herein were not detected in the D. saccharalis samples analysed, but the endosymbiont Wolbachia was detected in C. flavipes and altered the biological and morphological aspects of this parasitoid insect. The results of this study may help to elucidate the role of Wolbachia in maintaining the quality of populations/lineages of C. flavipes.
This article offers an analysis of the changes in mass-level ideological polarization in Latin America. It provides a cross-national, region-wide assessment of polarization dynamics using survey data on left-right ideological identities. A novel indicator for measuring ideological polarization at the individual level is proposed, which is more compatible with theoretical conceptualizations of ideological polarization than other existing indicators. The indicator is applied to data from the AmericasBarometer surveys to measure degrees and changes in mass-level ideological polarization in 19 Latin American countries between 2006 and 2019. The study reveals a substantial process of mass-level ideological restructuring, accompanied by a region-wide increase in ideological polarization in Latin America taking place during the second decade of the twenty-first century. We also find that ideological polarization, albeit varying in intensity from country to country, is clearly present at the mass level in the majority of countries in the region.
Maternal obesity may trigger long-term neurodevelopmental disorders in offspring. Considering the benefits of the Brazil nut (Bertholletia excelsa H.B.K.), a rich source of nutrients such as selenium, this study aimed to evaluate its effect on the behavior of obese rat offspring and its relationship with oxidative stress. From 60 days of age until weaning, female Wistar rats were fed a high-fat diet (mHF) or an HF diet supplemented with 5% Brazil nut (mHF/BN), while control mothers (mCTL) were fed a standard diet or a standard diet supplemented with 5% Brazil nut (mBN). Male pups received a standard diet throughout life and, at 30 and 90 days old, were subjected to behavioral tasks to evaluate anxiety and cognition. Biochemical evaluations were performed at 90 days of age. No alterations were observed in the anxiety behavior of the offspring. However, the offspring of the mHF group (oHF) exhibited impaired short-term memory at 30 and 90 days of age and impaired long-term memory at 30 days. Short-term memory impairment was prevented by Brazil nuts in young rats (30 days). While the serum selenium concentration was reduced in the oHF group, the serum catalase concentration was reduced in all groups, without changes in lipid peroxidation or protein carbonylation. Brazil nut maternal diet supplementation prevented short- and long-term cognitive impairment in the offspring, which may be related to the selenium levels.
Immersive technologies have the potential to control cognitive and behavioural symptoms in people with dementia. A safe environment can be designed through a specific interactive scenario, according to the preferences and experiences of each user.
Objective:
Mapping neuro-emotional responses during the interactive scenario therapy experience in a case study, with dementia, using electroencephalography (EEG).
Methods:
A participant, 78 years old and diagnosed with moderate to severe Alzheimer's disease (female; Mini Mental State Examination score of 17 points; frontal assessment battery score of 8 points), underwent EEG analysis (EMOTIV EPOC X) using a protocol with interactive scenarios tailored to the participant's needs and preferences, the scenarios were designed from reminiscence strategies. The protocol included a stimulus that alternated between motor and cognitive activities (3 minutes), and breath-centered relaxation (1 minute). The scenarios used in this study were: setting up a living room; composing a cake recipe; shopping in the market to make a cake; looking for objects in the park; organizing a birthday party. These variables are provided, on a scale of 0 to 100, after processing by the algorithms of the EmotivPRO v3.0 software.
Results:
The values found in the EEG analysis will be described without stimulus and with stimulus respectively. Thus, engagement (68.57 to 71.86); arousal (57.86 to 49.86), focus (61.57 to 57.00), interest (54.86 to 49.57), relaxation (33.86 to 30.86), and stress (53.71 to 43.00). The EEG data showed an increase in engagement when the patient was stimulated (68.57 to 71.86). Relaxation also increased (30.86 to 33.86) when the stimulus was removed. The stress level, as analysed by the EEG, was also higher in the period without stimulus and reduced in the period with the stimulus (53.71 to 43).
Conclusion:
During a stimulus period in interactive therapy, there was an increase in engagement, which was related to an increasing focus during the stimulus. Lower values were observed compared to the period without stimulus, indicating a period of recovery after a period of concentration/arousal. Therefore, therapy with an interactive and familiar scenario, using a circuit of stimulus-breathing exercises, promotes a positive and adequate neuro-emotional response in a person with dementia.
The use of music in older people with advanced dementia is possible because perception, sensitivity, emotion, and memory of music may remain intact after other types of memory disappear. Previous literature is controversial about stress biomarkers response to music introduction in therapy routines for people with severe cognitive impairment and neural-behavioural disorders. Particularly, for these patients, it is possible that they feel lower pleasure levels with music-based therapies.
Objective:
To characterize the immediate physiological effects of listening to music during psychomotor stimulation in an old participant with combined dementia and depression disorder and in a participant with a dementia diagnosis.
Methods:
Two study cases with dementia diagnosis participated in this study (P1: 84yrs; male Parkinson; FAB=9; P2: 85 yrs; female; Alzheimer; FAB=11; depression diagnosis) and were submitted to psychomotor stimulation (2 sessions). The first 20 min. of each session was dedicated to psychomotor stimulation without music (A), followed by 20 minutes with music (B). Heart rate was monitored (H10 Polar sensor) in a continuous mode. Cortisol levels were collected at the beginning of the session (T0) and then repeated at periods A and B (μg/dL). The range between minimum and maximum HR values (beats per minute- bpm) and mean values for cortisol levels were considered for the stress response analysis.
Results:
Salivary cortisol levels were higher at T0 for P1 (0.393 vs 0.203). During period A, the P1 slightly decreased their values (↓0,076) and P2 had no changes. After introducing music, both P1 and P2 increased cortisol levels (↑0,085; 0,162↑). For both P1 and P2, a wide range of HR was detected during period B (P1: 13 vs 23 bpm) vs (P2: 15 vs 41 bpm).
Conclusion:
Immediate responses to the music inclusion in a psychomotor intervention caused an augmented stress response in elderly participants with dementia, especially in P2. In specific, the depression diagnosis in this participant may be associated with a low capacity to handle emotions during new experiences, causing a higher stress response.
Major neurocognitive disorder (or simply Dementia) is one of the main causes of disability and burden disease to caregivers and the health system, and a frequent cause of mortality worldwide. Alzheimer`s disease (AD) is the most common type (60-70%).
AD is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by amyloid-β (Aβ) deposition, causing neuronal and synaptic loss with subsequent cognitive disfunction.
There is cumulating evidence that sleep disturbances are associated with several pathological conditions, and AD is one of these. The prevalence and severity of sleep disorders is significant in AD patients, with sleep disturbances often precede its clinical diagnosis in many years. Some studies focus on possible mechanisms by which (abnormal) sleep participate in AD pathogenesis, and concluded individuals with sleep disturbances are at higher risk of developing dementia.
Objectives:
To highlight the current evidence on whether sleep disorders could precipitate or accelerate the clinical course of AD.
Methods:
Non-systematic review about sleep abnormalities and AD pathogenesis.
Results:
Several authors described a two-way relationship between sleep and amyloid pathology - sleep deprivation would lead to increased production and decreased clearance of Aβ; once Aβ is accumulated it results in more disrupted sleep, with an increase of Aβ production during wakefulness and a decrease of its clearance during sleep.
Recent data showed that sleep continuity and architecture (decreased total sleep time, slow-wave sleep, and REM sleep) are disturbed in AD patients.
Otherwise, sleep deprivation may be associated with decreased glymphatic system clearance, leading to accumulation of neurotoxic proteins, particularly Aβ (and tau). It`s also associated with proinflammatory states due to accumulation of reactive oxygen species, nucleotides and proteins during wakefulness, which leads to immune response that causes neuronal dysfunction and cellular death. Insomnia and sleep deprivation were also associated with activation of complement pathway and immunoglobulins secretion. Many studies suggest chronic sleep disruption changes blood–brain barrier structure and function leading to Aβ accumulation.
Conclusions:
There is emerging evidence that points sleep disturbances as both a potential marker for AD pathology and risk predictor of developing the disease. Future investigations should evaluate the relationship between specific sleep disorders and AD physiopathology.
We prove that, given a finitely generated subgroup H of a free group F, the following questions are decidable: is H closed (dense) in F for the pro-(met)abelian topology? Is the closure of H in F for the pro-(met)abelian topology finitely generated? We show also that if the latter question has a positive answer, then we can effectively construct a basis for the closure, and the closure has decidable membership problem in any case. Moreover, it is decidable whether H is closed for the pro-$\mathbf {V}$ topology when $\mathbf {V}$ is an equational pseudovariety of finite groups, such as the pseudovariety $\mathbf {S}_k$ of all finite solvable groups with derived length $\leq k$. We also connect the pro-abelian topology with the topologies defined by abelian groups of bounded exponent.
The complex algebra of an inverse semigroup with finitely many idempotents in each $\mathcal D$-class is stably finite by a result of Munn. This can be proved fairly easily using $C^{*}$-algebras for inverse semigroups satisfying this condition that have a Hausdorff universal groupoid, or more generally for direct limits of inverse semigroups satisfying this condition and having Hausdorff universal groupoids. It is not difficult to see that a finitely presented inverse semigroup with a non-Hausdorff universal groupoid cannot be a direct limit of inverse semigroups with Hausdorff universal groupoids. We construct here countably many nonisomorphic finitely presented inverse semigroups with finitely many idempotents in each $\mathcal D$-class and non-Hausdorff universal groupoids. At this time, there is not a clear $C^{*}$-algebraic technique to prove these inverse semigroups have stably finite complex algebras.
Oocyte cytoplasmic evaluation is based on homogeneity and granular appearance. Our study investigated if a granular cytoplasm, highly heterogeneous, would affect oocyte competence in bovine. In two experiments, bovine cumulus–oocyte complexes (COCs) with homogeneous cytoplasm (control, CC) and granulated cytoplasm (granular, GC) were selected from a regular pool of COCs. Experiment 1 was performed with slaughterhouse ovaries, and Experiment 2 was carried out in Girolando COCs obtained from ovum pick-up. Granular oocytes had higher caspase 3 levels (66.17 ± 11.61 vs 172.08 ± 16.95, P < 0.01) and similar GAP junction activity (5.64 ± 0.45 vs 6.29 ± 0.29). ZAR1 relative mRNA amount was lower in granular oocytes (178.27 ± 151.63 vs 0.89 ± 0.89, P = 0.01) and no effect was detected for MATER, PPP2R1A, ENY2, IGF2R, and BMP15 genes. Despite molecular differences, no detrimental effect was detected on oocyte competence in GC oocytes. Cleavage (Experiment 1: 59.52 ± 7.21% vs 59.79 ± 6.10% and Experiment 2: 68.88 ± 4.82 vs 74.41 ± 5.89%) and blastocyst (Experiment 1: 29.28 ± 4.14% vs 23.15 ± 2.96% and Experiment 2: 21.11 ± 3.28% vs 21.02 ± 6.08%) rates were similar between CC and GC (Experiments 1 and 2, respectively). Post-transfer embryo development revealed that pregnancy (CC: 24.27 ± 9.70% vs GC: 26.31 ± 7.23%) and calving (23.68% vs 33.33%) rates and fetal growth were not affected by the presence of cytoplasmic granules. Our results demonstrated that oocytes with granular cytoplasm present equivalent efficiency for IVF and calf production compared with homogenous cytoplasm oocytes. This could be observed through similar cleavage, blastocyst rates, and fetal growth development. In addition to differences in oocyte gene expression related to oocyte quality, it seems not to affect oocyte developmental competence.
One of the prominent peculiarities of nanoparticles (NPs) is their ability to cross biological barriers. Therefore, the development of NPs with different properties has great therapeutic potential in the area of reproduction because the association of drugs, hormones and other compounds with NPs represents an alternative for delivering substances directly at a specific site and for treatment of reproductive problems. Additionally, lipid-based NPs can be taken up by the tissues of patients with ovarian failure, deep endometriosis, testicular dysfunctions, etc., opening up new perspectives for the treatment of these diseases. The development of nanomaterials with specific size, shape, ligand density and charge certainly will contribute to the next generation of therapies to solve fertility problems in humans. Therefore, this review discusses the potential of NPs to treat reproductive disorders, as well as to regulate the levels of the associated hormones. The possible limitations of the clinical use of NPs are also highlighted.
This study provides new species records (NRs) of macroalgal assemblages present in rocky habitats from the South Shetland Islands (SSI) and north-eastern Antarctic Peninsula (EAP), Weddell Sea. Surveys were conducted during the summers of 2013/2014 to 2017/2018 at Elephant, Deception, Half Moon and Vega islands. Data from the present study and those available in the literature from the western Antarctic Peninsula (WAP) were combined to provide an updated checklist, giving insights into macroecology and potential changes in thermohaline circulation patterns. A total of 48 macroalgal taxa were identified from our sampling, with eight representing NRs to the EAP sector of the Weddell Sea and five representing NRs to the SSI. Statistical differences among the assemblages from the SSI, WAP and EAP were identified. NRs, including opportunistic species and new information about the biogeographical distributions of species reported here, give insights into ecoregional connectivity and environmental changes. This study updates macroalgal diversity records in regions that are currently experiencing the impacts of climate change. Future and ongoing monitoring for conservation purposes is required to detect non-native species, new dispersal pathways and patterns related to thermohaline anomalies in Antarctic waters.
