The Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP), recognized as the world's largest loess plateau, has been a subject of ongoing debate regarding the continuity of its sedimentary loess sequence due to its intricate depositional environment. In this study, we conducted dating on a 9.8-m-long Malan loess core obtained from the Sanmen Gorge in the southern CLP using optically stimulated luminescence (OSL). The OSL dates indicate loess deposition between 52.4 and 11.3 ka, with no apparent hiatus on a millennial scale, and a sedimentation rate (SR) exhibiting six distinct episodes. Additionally, a comprehensive review of 613 OSL ages from 18 sections at 14 sites across the CLP was conducted. The results reveal loess deposition at most sites shows no apparent hiatus on a millennial scale over the past 60 ka, except for two specific locations. High SR episodes during Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 3 across the CLP were attributed to heightened dust emissions from the source region and an enhanced dust deposition efficiency, while MIS 2 deposits were influenced by an intensified East Asian winter monsoon. Low SR episodes during MIS 1 at most sites were likely associated with reduced atmospheric transportation and pedogenesis. Spatially heterogeneous SR variations across the CLP might be influenced by local depositional environments.

LongYan kaolin has a large Fe content which affects the coloring. Bioleaching treatments to remove Fe impurities were conducted here using indigenous dissimilatory Fe(III)-reducing bacteria. The factors that affect bioleaching efficiency include bioleaching time, carbon source, pH, temperature, pulp density, and inoculum density and these were examined. Environmental scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction were used to examine any textural or mineralogical changes at the surface of the kaolin that may have occurred during the bioleaching. Iron impurities in the kaolin were reduced from 0.88% to 0.48% with an increase in the natural whiteness index from 60.8% to 81.5% after 7 days of bioleaching treatment. A granulometric analysis of dispersed kaolin demonstrated that the bioleaching resulted in a decrease in particle size. The results demonstrated that the bioleaching was very effective at improving the quality of the kaolin, where insoluble Fe(III), either adsorbed to the kaolin surfaces or admixed as amorphous forms, was leached out by micro-organisms as water-soluble Fe(II).

The construction of organic-inorganic hybrid ferroelectric materials with larger, high-polarity guest molecules intercalated in kaolinite (K) faces difficulties in terms of synthesis and uncertainty of structure-property relationships. The purpose of the present study was to optimize the synthesis method and to determine the mechanism of ferroelectric behavior of kaolinite intercalated with p-aminobenzamide (PABA), with an eye to improving the design of intercalation methods and better utilization of clay-based ferroelectric materials. The K-PABA intercalation compound (chemical formula Al2Si2O5(OH)4∙(PABA)0.7) was synthesized in an autoclave and then characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared spectroscopy (IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The experimental results showed that PABA expanded the kaolinite interlayer from 7.2 Å to 14.5 Å, and the orientation of the PABA molecule was ~70° from the plane of the kaolinite layers. The amino group of the PABA molecule was close to the Si sheet. The presence of intermolecular hydrogen bonds between kaolinite and PABA and among PABA molecules caused macro polarization of K-PABA and dipole inversion under the external electric field, resulting in K-PABA ferroelectricity. Simulation calculations using the Cambridge Sequential Total Energy Package (CASTEP) and the ferroelectricity test revealed the optimized intercalation model and possible ferroelectric mechanism.

Astrophysical collisionless shocks are amazing phenomena in space and astrophysical plasmas, where supersonic flows generate electromagnetic fields through instabilities and particles can be accelerated to high energy cosmic rays. Until now, understanding these micro-processes is still a challenge despite rich astrophysical observation data have been obtained. Laboratory astrophysics, a new route to study the astrophysics, allows us to investigate them at similar extreme physical conditions in laboratory. Here we will review the recent progress of the collisionless shock experiments performed at SG-II laser facility in China. The evolution of the electrostatic shocks and Weibel-type/filamentation instabilities are observed. Inspired by the configurations of the counter-streaming plasma flows, we also carry out a novel plasma collider to generate energetic neutrons relevant to the astrophysical nuclear reactions.

Temperate glaciers are more sensitive to climate changes than polar or continental glaciers, and can drive remarkable runoff variation in local water catchments. Here we present recent glacier shrinkage and runoff change for Hailuogou glacier, a typical monsoon temperate glacier on the east slope of Mount Gongga (Minya Konga), China. The surface area of Hailuogou glacier has decreased by 3.5% (0.92 km2) between 1966 (aerial photographs) and 2007 (ASTER images). Flow measurements at a stream gauge about 500 m down-glacier commencing in 1994 display a remarkable increase in annual runoff (mostly during July–September) since 1999. Annual runoff over the same period in a nonglacierized but forested subcatchment (9.17 km2) did not experience significant change. By separating the daily rainfall component from the daily total discharge, monthly catchment water-balance series were calculated for the period 1994–2005, which shows an increasing trend of glacier storage loss. We concluded that air-temperature rise (with a trend of +0.2°C (10 a)−1 between 1988 and 2005, recorded at nearby weather stations) has had an increased effect on glacier mass loss and river runoff change during the past 20 years.

The second Chinese glacier inventory was compiled based on 218 Landsat TM/ETM+ scenes acquired mainly during 2006–10. The widely used band ratio segmentation method was applied as the first step in delineating glacier outlines, and then intensive manual improvements were performed. The Shuttle Radar Topography Mission digital elevation model was used to derive altitudinal attributes of glaciers. The boundaries of some glaciers measured by real-time kinematic differential GPS or digitized from high-resolution images were used as references to validate the accuracy of the methods used to delineate glaciers, which resulted in positioning errors of ±10 m for manually improved clean-ice outlines and ±30 m for manually digitized outlines of debris-covered parts. The glacier area error of the compiled inventory, evaluated using these two positioning accuracies, was ±3.2%. The compiled parts of the new inventory have a total area of 43 087 km2, in which 1723 glaciers were covered by debris, with a total debris-covered area of 1494 km2. The area of uncompiled glaciers from the digitized first Chinese glacier inventory is ∼8753 km2, mainly distributed in the southeastern Tibetan Plateau, where no images of acceptable quality for glacier outline delineation can be found during 2006–10.

Glaciers in the Bugyai Kangri are located in a transition zone from southeast Tibet, where monsoonal temperate glaciers dominate, to inner Tibet, where continental glaciers dominate. Here we analyze glacier and glacial lake changes in this region using multi-year inventories based on Landsat images from 1981–2013. Results show that the total area of 141 glaciers in the region decreased by 30.44 ±0.89 km2 from 198.35 ±9.54 km2 (1980s) to 167.93 ±4.52 km2 (2010s). The annual area shrinkage rate (–0.48% a–1) is lower than that reported for southeastern Tibet but higher than that of inner Tibet. Both the number and total area of glacial lakes increased between 1981 and 2013. Among all lakes, proglacial lakes contribute most (~81 %) to the expansion. The total area of ten proglacial lakes increased by 150.3 ± 13.17% and of these ten lakes the four that expanded most sharply showed increased calving at their upper margins, resulting in more rapid retreat of lake-terminating glaciers than land-terminating glaciers. Owing to rapid calving, several lakes may undergo further growth in the near future, increasing the potential risk of glacial lake outburst floods.

X-ray powder diffraction data, unit-cell parameters, and space group for drospirenone, C24H30O3, are reported [a = 12.897(1) Å, b = 12.618(1) Å, c = 12.252(1) Å, α = β = γ = 90°, unit-cell volume V = 1994.13 Å3, Z = 4, ρcal = 1.229 g cm−3, and space group P212121]. All measured lines were indexed and are consistent with the P212121 space group. No detectable impurities were observed.

The effect of surface preparation—grinding, polishing, and electrochemical etching—on the duplex stainless steel passive film conductivity was investigated by in situ current sensing atomic force microscopy. The current maps show that the current in the passive film on three prepared surfaces is different, especially for the ferrite and austenite phase surface. The current on the austenite and ferrite is similar on either mechanical ground or polished surfaces, but the current on the austenite surface is much higher than current on the ferrite surface after electrochemical etching. The difference in the passive film conductivity originates from the changes in the chemical composition and thickness of the passive film and the change in topographical properties induced by the preparation procedures. This is confirmed by AFM, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and auger electron spectroscopy measurements.

The multi-wavelength pulsed emission from young pulsars and millisecond pulsars can be well modeled with the single-pole 3-dimension annular gap and core gap model. To distinguish our single magnetic pole model from two-pole models (e.g. outer gap model and two-pole caustic model), the convincing values of the magnetic inclination angle and the viewing angle will play a key role.

This paper presents experimental and numerical studies of drop tests of corrugatedcardboard packaging containing different foam cushions. An efficient homogenization modelfor the corrugated cardboard has been developed. In our homogenized model, the corrugatedcardboard is represented by a 2D plate. Instead of using a local constitutive law(relating the strains to the stresses) at each material point, the homogenization givesthe global rigidities (relating the generalized strains to the resultant forces) for theequivalent homogeneous plate. This model was implemented into the FE software ABAQUS. Thefoam behaviour was experimentally determined and modelled using a crushable foam model ofABAQUS. The packages are tested in free fall from a given height on a rigid floor. Thedeceleration of the packed product was recorded using a triaxial accelerometer. Thenumerical results obtained using the FE simulation with the homogenized model agree wellwith the experimental results. We have also shown that the contribution of the corrugatedcardboard box to the shock response could not be neglected in the design of cushioningpackage.

Lors de la fabrication, à l’aide d’un procédé d’emboutissage, de pièces en tôles minces telles que les carrosseries automobiles ou les composants d’électroménager, certaines surfaces doivent être ajoutées à la pièce désirée afin d’éviter des défauts comme la rupture, le plissement et la rayure. Ces surfaces additionnelles sont constituées de murs de protection et de surfaces sous serre-flan. L’objectif principal de cette étude est de proposer une méthodologie d’aide à la conception des surfaces additionnelles s’appuyant sur le développement d’une procédure numérique automatique de conception et d’optimisation de ces surfaces additionnelles dans le cadre d’un procédé d’emboutissage de tôles minces. La conception automatique des surfaces additionnelles s’appuie sur la création des courbes de profil et de surfaces de COONS. Ces surfaces sont ensuite maillées automatiquement et la simulation du problème d’emboutissage est résolue avec l’Approche Inverse. Enfin, les paramètres géométriques nécessaires à la création des surfaces sont optimisés afin de satisfaire des critères mécaniques propres au procédé d’emboutissage. Ces outils paramétriques de conception-simulation-optimisation permettent d’aboutir rapidement à des surfaces additionnelles optimales.

Based on our independently developed data processing software, the real-time reduction of the instantaneous state vectors of satellite during the maneuver stage near to perilune is analyzed via experimental observations. Results show that it is a quick and practical method to monitor the orbit evolution and the lunar capture of Chang'E-1 satellite.

Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) has been used to deposit films such as silicon, silicon oxide, silicon nitride, tungsten, silicide, copper and titanium nitride in the semiconductor industry. The reaction driving forces for CVD are typically temperature for thermal CVD, plasma ionization for plasma enhanced CVD, or atomic oxygen for ozone CVD. In the recent years, plasma enhanced CVD (PECVD) and ozone CVD have found extensive applications in the semiconductor industry, due to the higher deposition rate and lower deposition temperature. For example, PECVD and ozone CVD are used to deposit almost all dielectric films such as silicon oxide and silicon nitride on a wafer. The dielectric films on wafers serve as insulating layers between conducting metal layers and as passivation layer on top of semiconductor devices.
