In the soils of western Jilin Province in northeastern China, some significant gaps have been observed between the fraction of the soil existing as clay-size particles (<0.002 mm) and the amount attributable to crystalline clay minerals, and that the relative proportions of crystalline clay minerals to the total clay-size fraction (CP) apparently varies with latitude. The purpose of the present study was to identify the reason for this discrepancy and to explain the dependence on latitude. The grain sizes and mineral compositions of the whole soils from western Jilin Province, China, were analyzed by laser particle-size analysis (LPSA) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), and the <0.002 mm particle-size fraction was analyzed by XRD and X-ray fluorescence (XRF). The results confirmed that the percentage gaps between the clay fraction and clay minerals increased with increasing latitude. The theoretical illite percentage calculated from K2O content was compared with the illite percentage measured by XRD, and the results suggested that the measured illite accounted for only a small proportion of the theoretical illite. Structures of some special minerals below the identification threshold of XRD was suggested to be the reason for the percent gaps. The grain size and mineral crystallization both changed with latitude: the soil particle size and the CP decreased. In addition, clay minerals were more sensitive to climate than particle sizes were, and the CP of clay minerals in the soils within 0~180 cm depth all decreased with increasing latitude; however, the grain size showed patterns with latitude only in relatively shallow soil layers. The present study provides a reference and error analysis for the testing of clay minerals in alpine regions, and more suitable methods may be considered for development of clay-mineral testing in future studies.

Objectives: Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) is a multidrug-resistant gram-negative bacteria (MDR-GNB) that is rapidly emerging as a life-threatening nosocomial disease in many countries. We sought to identify the risk factors associated with mortality for carriage of CRE in patients at a tertiary-care teaching hospital. Methods: A retrospective observational study was conducted between January 2020 to December 2021 in a tertiary-care teaching healthcare facility, University Malaya Medical Centre in Malaysia. The study included all inpatients aged ≥18 years who had a CRE infection or were colonized during the study period. The genotype was identified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Statistical analysis of data including a multivariate logistic regression analysis was conducted using SPSS version 23.0 software. Results: In total, 176 cases of CRE (130 infection and 46 colonized) were identified, and the mortality rate was 31.8%. The main sources of CRE were rectal swab (61.9%), blood (11.9%), and respiratory sources (11.9%). Klebsiella pneumoniae (55.7%) was the predominant species, followed by Escherichia coli (21.6%). Among the isolates, 17.7% were non–CPE-CRE and 82.3% were CPE-CRE: NDM (69.3%) and OXA (10.8%). In multivariate analysis, the factors associated with mortality were older age (OR, 1.040; 95% CI, 1.012–1.069), longer length of stay (OR, 0.974; 95% CI, 0.955–0.994), use of central venous catheter (OR, 0.287; 95% CI, 0.094–0.878), and arterial lines (OR, 0.292; 95% CI, 0.095–0.891). Conclusion: Patients with CRE had a high mortality rate. Older age, longer duration of stay, indwelling CVC and arterial line were independent risk factors for death. Infection prevention and control measures to reduce CRE, such as active surveillance, contact precautions, compliance to intravenous catheter care bundles, healthcare worker education, and hand hygiene adherence, should be implemented.

Objectives: Surgical-site infections (SSIs) cause significant increases in mortality, morbidity, and prolonged hospitalization after cesarean deliveries. We assessed the effectiveness of the implementation of an SSI bundle in reducing postoperative infections in cesarean deliveries in a tertiary-care teaching hospital in Malaysia. Method: We conducted a quality-improvement study on all women who underwent labor and scheduled cesarean sections at the University Malaya Medical Center (UMMC) between May and December 2020. The preintervention period was May–June 2020 and the postintervention period was September–December 2020. Patients were followed for 90 days after their operation. Before the intervention, SSI rates and compliance with prevention practices were documented. A multidisciplinary team was formed, and education regarding the elements of the SSI prevention bundle was conducted before they were implemented. The care bundle focused on monitoring compliance with preoperative bathing, contact time for skin preparation, hair management, and antibiotics prophylaxis given within 60 minutes prior to incision, as well as patient education. Result: With the implementation of the SSI bundle, we observed a significant reduction in the SSI rate by 50%, from 7 per 100 procedures to 2 per 100 procedures. Compared with the preintervention period, overall compliance with bundle elements improved greatly for preoperative bathing (0 vs 95.7%) and contact time for skin preparation (0 vs 98.8%). In the postintervention period, the method of hair removal was documented, compared to no documentation during the preintervention period. The administration of prophylactic antibiotics within 60 minutes prior incision decreased from 99% to 92.3%. Conclusion: Implementation of an SSI prevention bundle successfully reduced the rate of SSI after cesarean section. The SSI prevention bundle together with improvements by multidisciplinary teams and a good patient-safety culture helped reduce SSI rates. Patient education on pre- and postoperative infection prevention also played an important role in reducing this infection rate.

The codling moth Cydia pomonella is a major pest of global significance impacting pome fruits and walnuts. It threatens the apple industry in the Loess Plateau and Bohai Bay in China. Sterile insect technique (SIT) could overcome the limitations set by environmentally compatible area-wide integrated pest management (AW-IPM) approaches such as mating disruption and attract-kill that are difficult to suppress in a high-density pest population, as well as the development of insecticide resistance. In this study, we investigated the effects of X-ray irradiation (183, 366, 549 Gy) on the fecundity and fertility of a laboratory strain of C. pomonella, using a newly developed irradiator, to evaluate the possibility of X-rays as a replacement for Cobalt60 (60Co-γ) and the expanded future role of this approach in codling moth control. Results show that the 8th-day is the optimal age for irradiation of male pupae. The fecundity decreased significantly as the dosage of radiation increased. The mating ratio and mating number were not influenced. However, treated females were sub-sterile at a radiation dose of 183 Gy (20.93%), and were almost 100% sterile at a radiation dose of 366 Gy or higher. Although exposure to a radiation dose of 366 Gy resulted in a significant reduction in the mating competitiveness of male moths, our radiation biology results suggest that this new generation of X-ray irradiator has potential applications in SIT programs for future codling moth control.

We report a generation of energetic protons by the interaction of a high-energy electron driving beam with an underdense plasma slab. After an interaction period of approximately 4000 fs, a proton beam with maximum energy greater than 250 MeV can be achieved by applying a driving beam with energy 1.0 GeV to a 200 $\mathrm {\mu }$m plasma slab. Our two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations also show that the proton acceleration process can be divided into two stages. In the first stage, a strong positive longitudinal electric field appears near the rear boundary of the plasma slab after the driving beam has passed through it. This acceleration process is similar to the target normal sheath acceleration scheme by the interaction between intense pulsed laser with overdense plasma targets. In the second stage, the accelerated protons experience a long-range acceleration process with a two-stream instability between the high-energy driving beam and the proton beam. Further analyses show that this accelerated proton beam is equipped with the property of good collimation and high energy. This scheme presents a new way for proton or ion acceleration on some special occasions.

In this article, the electron trapping and acceleration in the wake field driven by an ultrarelativistic hollow electron beam is studied. When the hollow driver injects into plasma, there is a doughnut-shaped electron bubble formed because of the existence of a special ‘backflow’ beam in the centre of the electron bubble. At the same time, there is a transverse convergence of the hollow driver, which leads to the weakening of the backflow beam. This results in a local electron density transition at the rear of the bubble. During this process, there is an expansion of the longitudinal electron bubble size, and a bunch of background electrons is trapped by the wake field at the rear of the bubble. The tracks for the trapped electrons show that there are two sources: one is from the bubble sheath and the other is from the unique backflow beam. In the particle-in-cell simulation where the driving beam has initial energy of $1.0$ GeV per particle, the trapped beam can be accelerated to energy of more than $1.5$ GeV per particle and the corresponding transformer ratio is $1.5$. With the increase of driving beam energy up to $40.0$ GeV, a transformer ratio of $1.4$ still can be achieved. By adjusting the hollow beam density, it is possible to control the trapped beam charge value and beam quality, such as its energy spread and transverse emittance.

This research introduces an application of an electric impedance sensing technique to investigate cell attachment of normal epithelial cells (HaCAT) and cancerous cells (A431) before and after addition of Ganoderma Lucidum (reishi). In this study, an impedance sensing system is used to measure and characterize real-time changes in electric impedance (resistance and capacitance) with respect to an alternating current (AC) applied to HaCAT and A431 cell colonies. The impedance data is related to the properties of cell spreading, attachment, and delamination. The effect of reishi at dosages of 0.005, 0.01, and 0.02 mg/ml on these cellular properties was inferred from impedance data. The initial impedance data show that resistance is greater for A431 cells than HaCAT cells and that capacitance for A431 cells is less than the capacitance for HaCAT cells. Further, the data shows the resistance for HaCAT cells and for A431 cells increases with time, and the capacitance for both decreases with time. The impedance data analysis shows that reishi plays no role in altering the impedance of the cellular matrix. At most, reishi serves as a lubricant to allow partial detachment and reattachment of HaCAT cell-to-cell bonds, thus reordering (< entropy) the cellular matrix. This effect is not seen in A431 cell colonies.

CrFeNiTix (x = 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, and 0.6 molar ratio) compositionally complex alloys were fabricated by vacuum arc melting to investigate the microstructure, hardness, and compressive properties. The results revealed that CrFeNiTix alloys consisted of the principal face-centered cubic (FCC) phase and body-centered cubic (BCC) solid solution, with an amount of (Ni, Ti)-rich hexagonal close-packed phase. CrFeNiTix alloys exhibited the typical dendrite. Ti0.2 and Ti0.3 alloys were composed of FCC and BCC solid solutions in the dendrite, as well as ε (Ni3Ti) and R (Ni2.67Ti1.33) phases in the inter-dendrite, simultaneously. For Ti0.4, Ti0.5, and Ti0.6 alloys, (Fe, Cr)-rich solid solution separated out and ε phase transformed into R phase gradually. Meanwhile, TEM analysis indicated that Ti0.4 alloy matrix consisted of the principal FCC phase containing (Ni, Ti)-rich intragranular nanoprecipitates. The hardness values of CrFeNiTix alloys were increased with the addition of Ti content and the high compressive strength of CrFeNiTix alloys was maintained, which was attributed to the solid solution strengthening and precipitation hardening.

Bilinear fractal interpolation surfaces were introduced by Ruan and Xu in 2015. In this paper, we present the formula for their box dimension under certain constraint conditions.

Oculocutaneous albinism (OCA) is a heterogeneous autosomal recessive genetic disorder that affects melanin synthesis. OCA results in reduced or absent pigmentation in the hair, skin and eyes. Type 1 OCA (OCA1) is the result of tyrosinase (TYR) gene mutations and is a severe disease type. This study investigated TYR mutations in a Chinese cohort with OCA1. This study included two parts: patient genetic study and prenatal genetic diagnosis. A total of 30 OCA1 patients were subjected to TYR gene mutation analysis. Ten pedigrees were included for prenatal genetic diagnosis. A total of 100 unrelated healthy Chinese individuals were genotyped for controls. The coding sequence and the intron/exon junctions of TYR were analysed by bidirectional DNA sequencing. In this study, 20 mutations were identified, four of which were novel. Of these 30 OCA1 patients, 25 patients were TYR compound heterozygous; two patients carried homozygous TYR mutations; and three were heterozygous. Among the ten prenatally genotyped fetuses, three fetuses carried compound heterozygous mutations and seven carried no mutation or only one mutant allele of TYR and appeared normal at birth. In conclusion, we identified four novel TYR mutations and showed that molecular-based prenatal screening to detect TYR mutations in a fetus at risk for OCA1 provided essential information for genetic counselling of couples at risk.

An ion beam has the unique feature of being able to deposit its main energy inside a human body to kill cancer cells or inside material. However, conventional ion accelerators tend to be huge in size and cost. In this paper, a future intense-laser ion accelerator is discussed to make the laser-based ion accelerator compact and controllable. The issues in the laser ion accelerator include the energy efficiency from the laser to the ions, the ion beam collimation, the ion energy spectrum control, the ion beam bunching, and the ion particle energy control. In the study, each component is designed to control the ion beam quality by particle simulations. The energy efficiency from the laser to ions is improved by using a solid target with a fine sub-wavelength structure or a near-critical-density gas plasma. The ion beam collimation is performed by holes behind the solid target or a multi-layered solid target. The control of the ion energy spectrum and the ion particle energy, and the ion beam bunching are successfully realized by a multi-stage laser–target interaction.

Interspecies intracytoplasmic sperm injection has been carried out to understand species-specific differences in oocyte environments and sperm components during fertilization. While sperm aster organization during cat fertilization requires a paternally derived centriole, mouse and hamster fertilization occur within the maternal centrosomal components. To address the questions of where sperm aster assembly occurs and whether complete fertilization is achieved in cat oocytes by interspecies sperm, we studied the fertilization processes of cat oocytes following the injection of cat, mouse, or hamster sperm. Male and female pronuclear formations were not different in the cat oocytes at 6 h following cat, mouse or hamster sperm injection. Microtubule asters were seen in all oocytes following intracytoplasmic injection of cat, mouse or hamster sperm. Immunocytochemical staining with a histone H3-m2K9 antibody revealed that mouse sperm chromatin is incorporated normally with cat egg chromatin, and that the cat eggs fertilized with mouse sperm enter metaphase and become normal 2-cell stage embryos. These results suggest that sperm aster formation is maternally dependent, and that fertilization processes and cleavage occur in a non-species specific manner in cat oocytes.

The molecular mechanisms underlying the involvement of oligodendrocytes in formation of the nodes of Ranvier (NORs) remain poorly understood. Here we show that oligodendrocyte-myelin glycoprotein (OMgp) aggregates specifically at NORs. Nodal location of OMgp does not occur along demyelinated axons of either Shiverer or proteolipid protein (PLP) transgenic mice. Over-expression of OMgp in OLN-93 cells facilitates process outgrowth. In transgenic mice in which expression of OMgp is down-regulated, myelin thickness declines, and lateral oligodendrocyte loops at the node-paranode junction are less compacted and even join together with the opposite loops, which leads to shortened nodal gaps. Notably, each of these structural abnormalities plus modest down-regulation of expression of Na+ channel α subunit result in reduced conduction velocity in the spinal cords of the mutant mice. Thus, OMgp that is derived from glia has distinct roles in regulating nodal formation and function during CNS myelination.

We propose a focusing mechanism of high-energy ions by an electron cloud produced by a laser interaction with slab plasma. In our 2.5-dimensional (2.5D) particle-in-cell simulations, the laser intensity is 2 × 1020 W/cm2, the laser wavelength λ is 1.053 μm, and the laser spot size is 2.5λ. When the high intensity laser irradiates slab plasma, electrons are accelerated, oscillate around the plasma and produce the electron cloud locally at the sides of the plasma. Because the electrons are localized transversely, a static electric potential is formed to focus ions and at the same time the ions are accelerated longitudinally. Though the longitudinal ion acceleration has been studied well, the ion focusing effect is reported for the first time in this paper. In our calculations, the maximum energy and intensity of the protons are 8.61 MeV and 1.89 × 1017 W/cm2, and the diameter of the proton bunch accelerated are focused to 71.2% of its initial size.

Electron ponderomotive acceleration in a vacuum by a short-pulsed laser of TEM (1, 0) + TEM (0, 1) mode is studied in this paper using a 3-dimensional (3D) particle simulation. It was found that the laser can trap electrons in transverse and accelerate them with the longitudinal ponderomotive force at the same time. Through this electron trapping and acceleration scheme of TEM (1, 0) + TEM (0, 1) mode laser, the electron bunch is confined well in transverse and compressed remarkably in longitudinal. Therefore, a high energy, high density, and low emittances electron bunch is generated. For example, the result shows that for a laser with intensity of a0 = eE0 /mωc = 10, the laser spot size of w0 = 15λ, and the laser pulse length of Lz = 10λ, the maximum energy gain reaches 301 MeV and the average energy 57.7 MeV. The electron bunch transverse radius is about 350λ and the longitudinal size about 20λ. The property of this accelerated bunch is improved compared with that generated by the laser of TEM (0, 0) mode.

In this study, inter-strain reconstructed embryos were produced by combining the female pronucleus of Kunming mouse (white) with male pronucleus of C57BL/6 strain (black). Metaphase II (MII) oocytes of Kunming mouse were enucleated and the zona pellucida was removed. Then, the enucleated oocytes were inseminated by capacitated sperm of C57BL/6 mouse in vitro. At the same time, MII oocytes of Kunming mouse were artificially activated using strontium chloride solution, which did not contain cytochalasin B. Finally, we removed the male pronucleus derived from C57BL/6 sperm and injected it into a parthenogenetically activated one-pronucleus oocyte by micromanipulation. The reconstructed 2-cell embryos were transplanted into the oviducts of 22 foster mother mice, each receiving about 20 embryos. In the end, seven healthy and live pups were born from one recipient.

TEM was used to investigate the annealing effects on the microstructure of two electrodeposited Cu/Ag multilayered nanocomposites with bi-layer thickness values of 110nm and 330nm, respectively, as well as electrodeposited pure copper. It was found that silver layers limited the lateral growth of columnar copper grains and possibly acted as sites for nucleation of new copper grains in the as-deposited composites. The refinement of copper grains in this condition is one reason for the much higher strength of these materials in comparison to pure copper. Annealing at 100 °C did not change the microstructure significantly. After annealing at 150 °C, recrystallization occurred in all samples. The degree of recrystallization was dependent on the extent of internal stresses. Recrystallization was complete in the 110nm bi-layer thick composite, which had the highest internal stresses owning to its large Cu/Ag interfacial area. The recrystallization and growth of copper grains can be one reason for the drastic drop of the composites yield strength after annealing at 150°C

In this study, electrodeposition was employed to produce Cu-Ag multilayered nanocomposites using a single-bath cyanide solution. The silver and the copper layers were applied by electroless deposition and galvanostatic electrodeposition methods, respectively. The as-deposited composite showed a very high strength, which was increased upon annealing at 104°C. Annealing at 149°C caused the strength to drop to a level comparable to the strength of electrodeposited pure copper specimens. In this paper, the effect of heat treatment on the mechanical properties and structure of Cu-Ag multilayered nanocomposites is discussed.
