The manipulation of the Richtmyer–Meshkov instability growth at a heavy–light interface via successive shocks is theoretically analysed and experimentally realized in a specific shock-tube facility. An analytical model is developed to forecast the interface evolution before and after the second shock impact, and the possibilities for the amplitude evolution pattern are systematically discussed. Based on the model, the parameter conditions for each scenario are designed, and all possibilities are experimentally realized by altering the time interval between two shock impacts. These findings may enhance the understanding of how successive shocks influence hydrodynamic instabilities in practical applications.

The effects of reshock conditions, including the interface evolution state before reshock and the second shock intensity, on interface instability induced by two successive shocks propagating in the same direction are investigated via shock-tube experiments. It is observed that the reshock promotes the interface instability, and the post-reshock perturbation evolution relates to both the pre-reshock interface evolution state and second shock intensity. For the linear evolution of the twice-shocked interface, existing models perform poorly when either the pre-reshock interface shape effect or the secondary compression effect is pronounced, as current reduction factors fail to accurately describe these effects. Besides, the reshock-induced linear amplitude growth rate shows a non-monotonic dependence on the scaled pre-reshock amplitude, primarily due to the shape effect of the pre-reshock interface. For the post-reshock nonlinear evolution, the model proposed by Zhang & Guo (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 786, 2016, pp. 47–61) offers reasonable predictions when the second shock is weak. However, when the second shock is moderately strong, the model overestimates the bubble growth and underestimates the spike evolution under the influence of the significant secondary compression effect. Furthermore, empirical linear and nonlinear models capable of describing the dependence of the post-reshock evolution on reshock conditions are proposed based on the present experimental results and existing models.

The coupling of Richtmyer–Meshkov instability (RMI) and Kelvin–Helmholtz instability (KHI), referred to as RM-KHI, on a shock-accelerated inclined single-mode air–SF$_6$ interface is studied through shock-tube experiments, focusing on the evolution of the perturbation distributed along the inclined interface. To clearly capture the linear (overall linear to nonlinear) evolution of RM-KHI, a series of experiments with a weak (relatively strong) incident shock is conducted. For each series of experiments, various $\theta _{i}$ (angle between incident shock and equilibrium position of the initial interface) are considered. The nonlinear flow features manifest earlier and develop faster when $\theta _{i}$ is larger and/or shock is stronger. In addition, the interface with $\theta _{i}>0^{\circ }$ evolves obliquely along its equilibrium position under the effect of KHI. RMI dominates the early-time amplitude evolution regardless of $\theta _{i}$ and shock intensity, which arises from the discrepancy in the evolution laws between RMI and KHI. KHI promotes the post-early-stage amplitude growth and its contribution is related positively to $\theta _{i}$. An evident exponential-like amplitude evolution behaviour emerges in RM-KHI with a relatively strong shock and large $\theta _{i}$. The linear model proposed by Mikaelian (Phys. Fluids, vol. 6, 1994, pp. 1943–1945) is valid for RM-KHI within the linear period. In contrast, the adaptive vortex model (Sohn et al., Phys. Rev. E, vol. 82, 2010, p. 046711) can effectively predict both the interface morphology and overall amplitude evolutions from the linear to nonlinear regimes.

Richtmyer–Meshkov instability induced by two successive shock waves is experimentally studied in a specific shock tube. To create two successive shock waves synchronously, a driver section is added between the driver and driven sections of the standard shock tube, and an electronically controlled membrane rupture equipment is adopted. The shock-tube flow after the membranes rupture is well described by combining the shock relations, isentropic wave relations with compatibility relations across the contact surface (region). The new shock tube is capable of generating two successive shock waves with controllable strengths and time interval, and provides a relatively ‘clean’ wave system. Then the developments of single-mode light–heavy interfaces with different initial conditions induced by two successive shock waves are investigated. The initial amplitudes are all small enough such that the first-shocked interface is within the linear growth regime at the arrival of the second shock. The results show that if the pre-second-shock perturbation amplitude is small, the linear, nonlinear and modal evolutions of the double-shocked interface can be reasonably predicted by the existing models proposed for predicting the perturbation growth induced by a single shock. For the double-shocked interface, the second shock provides an additional perturbation velocity field to the original one introduced by the first shock impact. The validity of the linear superposition model indicates that the linear superposition of these two perturbation velocity fields is satisfied. Therefore, a double-shocked interface evolves similarly to a single-shocked interface provided that their postshock amplitudes and linear growth rates are the same.

The Qiangtang Metamorphic Belt (QMB) was considered to have either formed in situ by amalgmation of the North and South Qiangtang blocks or been underthrust from the Jinsha suture and exhumed in the interior of a single ‘Qiangtang Block’. A new Sphaeroschwagerina fusuline fauna discovered in the Raggyorcaka Lake area supports the interpretation that the North and South Qiangtang blocks were separated by a wide ocean during Asselian (Early Permian) time, indicating that the QMB was formed by the suturing of the Palaeotethys Ocean along the Longmu Co-Shuanghu suture.

Amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers linked to the stem nematode resistance gene were developed in sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.). Using bulked segregant analysis (BSA), 800 AFLP primer combinations were screened in the resistant and susceptible bulked DNA from the 186 progeny of an F1 single-cross population of Xu781 (resistant parent)×Xushu18 (susceptible parent), and 245 of these AFLP primers showed polymorphic bands between resistant and susceptible DNA. Primer combinations detecting polymorphism between the two bulks were used to screen the parents and eight individuals from each of the bulks. The results showed that E2M23 and E33M20 produced a specific band of about 500 bp and 200 bp in length, respectively, in the resistant plants but not in the susceptible plants, suggesting that the markers named E2M23500 and E33M20200 linked to a gene for stem nematode resistance. Amplified analysis of the 186 F1 individuals indicated that the genetic distance between these two markers and the stem nematode resistance gene was 6.9 cM and 11.1 cM, respectively, measured with Mapmaker 3.0. These two AFLP markers were used to identify ten sweet potato varieties planted widely in China and the results were consistent with those of conventional resistance identification, indicating that the two markers can be used in molecular marker-assisted breeding for stem nematode resistance in the sweet potato.

Regeneration of sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas cv. Lizixiang) transgenic plants with oryzacystatin-I (OCI) gene was achieved using an Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated method. A. tumefaciens strain LBA4404, harbouring a binary vector pBinh with neomycin phosphotransferase II and OCI genes, was used. After 3 days of subculture, Lizixiang embryogenic suspension cultures were co-cultivated with LBA4404 (OD600nm=0.5) for 4 days. Next, the infected suspension cultures were first cultured for 5 days in MS medium with 2 mg/l 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) and 300 mg/l carbencillin (Carb) but without kanamycin (Kan) and then transferred to MS medium supplemented with 2 mg/l 2,4-D, 50 mg/l Kan and 300 mg/l Carb for the selection culture. Four weeks after selection, 200 Kan-resistant cell aggregates (∼1 mm in size) from the embryogenic suspension cultures were transferred to MS solid medium supplemented with 2 mg/l 2,4-D, 50 mg/l Kan and 300 mg/l Carb, and eight embryogenic calluses were obtained. After transferring to MS medium supplemented with 1 mg/l ABA, 50 mg/l Kan and 100 mg/l Carb, these embryogenic calluses formed 13 plantlets via somatic embryogenesis. PCR and PCR–Southern blot analysis indicated that seven of the 13 plantlets were transgenic.

Zebrafish (Danio rerio), the only vertebrate organism now amenable to large scale of “saturation genetic screens”, provides a single opportunity to investigate the complex gene mechanisms for normally vertebrate-specific processes. Studies of bone formation and bone diseases utilizing zebrafish system are therefore of interest. In the present study, microstructure and mechanical properties of skeletal bone in gene-mutated Stöpsel dtl28d (stp/stp) and wild-type zebrafish were investigated using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and an atomic force microscopy (AFM)-based nanoindenter. Abnormal collagen matrix and minerals were observed in stp/stp bone comparing to the wild-type control. Nanoindentation measurement disclosed that there was a significant increase of elastic modulus in stp/stp bone compared to that of the control. AFM examinations of the residual indenter impressions indicate that the bone of zebrafish becomes more brittle after stp gene-mutation. This observation of the alteration of bone collagen, minerals and mechanical behavior by gene-mutation in zebrafish system is of scientific and clinical importance in many fields, such as bone fracture and brittleness in human heritable disorders and materials fabrication of bone tissue engineering via gene control.

Thin films of zinc sulfide (ZnS) doped with Mn, were deposited using magnetron sputter source. The electroluminescent properties of the as-deposited films were relatively poor. Post- deposition rapid thermal annealing (RTA) with and without co-dopants was studied. Significant changes in microstructure and EL performance were observed on the samples after post-sputter processing. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) were employed to characterize the microstructure. Both inter-grain and intra-grain distributions of the co-dopants were measured using energy dispersive X-ray spectra (EDX) and the distribution versus thickness was determined by dynamic secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS). A correlation between electroluminescent properties and the microstructure is obtained.

TEM was used to investigate the annealing effects on the microstructure of two electrodeposited Cu/Ag multilayered nanocomposites with bi-layer thickness values of 110nm and 330nm, respectively, as well as electrodeposited pure copper. It was found that silver layers limited the lateral growth of columnar copper grains and possibly acted as sites for nucleation of new copper grains in the as-deposited composites. The refinement of copper grains in this condition is one reason for the much higher strength of these materials in comparison to pure copper. Annealing at 100 °C did not change the microstructure significantly. After annealing at 150 °C, recrystallization occurred in all samples. The degree of recrystallization was dependent on the extent of internal stresses. Recrystallization was complete in the 110nm bi-layer thick composite, which had the highest internal stresses owning to its large Cu/Ag interfacial area. The recrystallization and growth of copper grains can be one reason for the drastic drop of the composites yield strength after annealing at 150°C

In this study, electrodeposition was employed to produce Cu-Ag multilayered nanocomposites using a single-bath cyanide solution. The silver and the copper layers were applied by electroless deposition and galvanostatic electrodeposition methods, respectively. The as-deposited composite showed a very high strength, which was increased upon annealing at 104°C. Annealing at 149°C caused the strength to drop to a level comparable to the strength of electrodeposited pure copper specimens. In this paper, the effect of heat treatment on the mechanical properties and structure of Cu-Ag multilayered nanocomposites is discussed.
