A simple electrostatic model has been used to demonstrate that the inner surface hydroxyls in kaolinite, dickite and nacrite are responsible for the interlayer bonding in these minerals. The contribution to the interlayer bonding of an individual hydroxyl hydrogen depends on the orientation of the hydroxyl group relative to the 1:1 layer since this orientation determines the H—O interlayer distance. If this distance is much greater than the sum of the van der Waals radii, 2·60 Å, there is essentially no bond. As the distance becomes less than 2·60 Å, the strength of the interlayer bond increases.

The hydroxyl orientations in 31 dioctahedral and trioctahedral 2:1 phyllosilicate structures have been determined by electrostatic energy calculations. These structures included micas, brittle micas, and other related minerals exhibiting ordered as well as disordered cation distributions. The dioctahedral micas and brittle micas were examined with and without the interlayer cation. A range of orientations from 1.3° to 183.3° (the angle ρ between the O-H and (001) measured with respect to the M1 site) were found. The orientations for the dioctahedral structures represent a continuum of values whereas the trioctahedral species exhibit two possible orientations separated by an energy barrier. One orientation is near 90° the other is near 180°. The latter orientation results from a concentration of charge on the interlayer (IC) and tetrahedral (T) sites at the expense of the octahedral (M) sites. A multiple regression analysis of all 31 structures, using as predictors the a and b cell parameters, d001, and the charges for T, IC, M1, and M2 sites, was performed. This analysis indicated that the important factors are the charges for IC, T, and M2 sites. When treated as a separate group, one finds the same factors for the dioctahedral structures. The trioctahedral orientations are determined by the charge on the M2 site and the amount of tetrahedral rotation. Using these two predictor equations, the value of ρ can be estimated with a standard deviation of 4.7° and 2.9° for the dioctahedral and trioctahedral cases, respectively.

Hydroxyl orientation has a major influence on the strength of the ionic interlayer bonding in micas because of the strong repulsion between the hydrogen and the interlayer cation (IC). In order to determine if other factors also influence the magnitude of the interlayer bond energy, the effect due to the varying H-IC distance, as one finds, for example, between a dioctahedral and a trioctahedral mica, must be removed. This can be done by calculating the bond energy as a function of the H-IC distance; a plot of which is a smooth curve with a minimum energy for the minimum H-IC distance. If there are no other factors which substantially contribute to the interlayer bonding energy, such curves for all micas should be superimposed. If, however, the curves are not superimposed but fall into groups with common attributes (stacking sequence, ionic substitutions, etc.) the energy separations between groups of curves indicate the influence of these other factors.

The results of such calculations for four dioctahedral micas (2M1 muscovite, 3T muscovite, and two 1M muscovites) and four trioctahedral micas (2M1 biotite, 1M phlogopite, 2M2 lepidolite and a 1M MgIV mica) indicate that these curves are at higher energy for dioctahedral than for trioctahedral micas and this energy increase is due to the filling of the octahedral sites. The dioctahedral micas are arranged in terms of energy as 1M ≥ 3T ≫ 2M1 while the order for the trioctahedral micas is 1M ≥ 2M1 ≅ 2M2. In addition, the calculated energies suggest that the distribution of the layer charge between the octahedral and tetrahedral sheets affects the strength of the interlayer bond such that the greater the charge on the octahedral sheet, the stronger the interlayer bond.

The hydroxyl orientations in the 2H2 polytype of amesite, Mg2Al(SiAl)O5(OH)4, have been determined by minimizing the electrostatic potential energy as a function of OH orientation. The angles, ρ, between the hydroxyls and (001) vary between 81.5 and 88.8°. All surface hydroxyls form hydrogen bonds with oxygens of the adjacent layer. The OHs tend to tilt away from the higher charged A1VI ions, and the spread in ρ values is due to variations in the positions of the receptor oxygens. The inner hydroxyls noticeably weaken the interlayer bonding. The substitution of Al in both T and M sites creates a dipolar layer charge and the resulting attraction between layers forms an important part of the interlayer bonding. The 2H2 polytype of amesite has substantial interlayer bonding even with all surface hydroxyls replaced by fluorine. This is not true for a composition of Mg3Si2O5(OH)4 where a similar F for OH substitution destroys all interlayer bonding as in kaolinite.

Previous studies of the defect structure of kaolinite have examined samples having a restricted level of defects. This study examined nine kaolinite samples having a large diversity of defect contents, as indicated by Hinckley indexes ranging from 1.44 to 0.18. The samples were chosen so as to cover this range in as regular a manner as possible. The types and abundances of the defects were determined by examining the X-ray powder diffraction profiles for the 02,11 and 20,13 bands. The diffraction intensities were measured by counting for a fixed time in steps of 0.01°2θ. Analysis of these diffraction profiles indicated that (1) the major defect is the existence of a translation between adjacent layers, which is not the usual (approximately a/3), but is related to that translation by the pseudo-mirror plane coincident with the long diagonal of the unit cell; (2) the existence of a few C layers among the B layer stacking is a minor defect; (3) many of the samples could be accurately modeled only by assuming the existence of two kaolinite phases; (4) the existence of only a few C layers in some samples does not support the idea of a continuous series from kaolinite to dickite through disordered intermediates; and (5) the Hinckley indexes of several samples depend on the relative proportions of the two types of kaolinite in the mixture.

The nine kaolinite samples fall into three groups: those having a low to moderate abundance of defects (Hinckley index > 0.43) are mixtures of two types of kaolinite (one almost free of defects, the other richer in defects); those having low Hinckley indexes (0.43 to 0.18) are single phases with different proportions of defects; and those which contain a single type of kaolinite, unlike the others in the nature of the interlayer translations and the greater abundance of C layers. The agreement between calculated and observed X-ray diffraction profiles is excellent for all specimens, except one sample (from Charentes) for which the fit is acceptable but not perfect.

Intercalates of Georgia well-crystallized kaolinite with formamide, N-methylformamide (NMF), and dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) were prepared at room temperature by dispersing the clay in the organic liquid. Several physical and chemical properties of the intercalated organic molecules and the clay, while intercalated and after de-intercalation, were examined using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), infrared (IR), and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy (EPR), and specific heat (Cp) measurements. The chemical bonding between the inner-surface hydroxyls and the organic molecules, as indicated by IR, was strongest for DMSO and weakest for formamide. The distortion of the kaolinite layer, as shown by EPR, also was greatest for DMSO and least for formamide. NMR T1 measurements indicated a relatively strong DMSO-kaolinite surface interaction that slowed down the methyl group reorientation comparable to that in bulk solid DMSO. T1 measurements indicated a weaker interaction for NMF. De-intercalation by mild heating did not return the kaolinite to its original structural state as shown by EPR and Cp. The greatest disorder was found for the DMSO de-intercalate and the least for the formamide de-intercalate. These experiments show that for sufficiently strong bonding between the clay inner surface and the intercalating molecule, the structure of the clay is capable of distortion, which is partly temporary and partly permanent. The permanent changes probably involve the introduction of stacking faults.

Several hydrates can be synthesized from well-crystallized kaolinites; of importance to the present work are a 10-Å hydrate (called the QS-10 hydrate), an 8.6-Å hydrate, and two kinds of partially dehydrated mixed-layer hydrates. One kind is a series of unstable materials with d(001) varying continuously between 10 and 8.6 Å, and the other kind is stable with d(001) approximately centered at 7.9 Å. The 10- and 7.9-Å phases have been observed in halloysites by many workers using X-ray powder diffraction, and the 8.6-Å phase has been seen by others in selected area electron diffraction photographs. Infrared spectra reveal additional similarities between the synthetic hydrates and both halloysite(10Å) and partially dehydrated halloysites. Because of these similarities, the synthetic hydrates can be used to develop a model for the dehydration of halloysite(10Å).

Previous work on the 10- and 8.6-Å hydrates identified two structural environments for the interlayer water. In one, the water is keyed into the ditrigonal holes of the silicate layer (hole water), and in the other, the water is more mobile (associated water). Both types are found in the QS-10 hydrate and halloysite(10Å), whereas only hole water occurs in the 8.6-Å hydrate. In the QS-10 hydrate, stronger hydrogen bonding between hole water and the clay makes the hole water more stable than the associated water. This difference in stability is responsible for a two-step dehydration process. The first step is the loss of associated water which results in a material with d(001) = 8.6 Å. This stable hydrate must be heated to temperatures near 200°C to drive off the remaining hole water. The less perfect structure of halloysite and its common curvilinear morphology reduce the difference in stability between hole and associated water molecules, so that when halloysite(10Å) dehydrates, loss of hole water and associated water overlaps, and the d-spacing goes directly to 7.2–7.9 Å.

Stable, three-dimensionally ordered complexes were formed from synthetically hydrated, highly ordered kaolinite (d(001) = 8.4 Å) and several organic compounds. Removal of the intercalated organic compound by drying or by water washing recovered the 8.4-Å hydrate with its ordered layer stacking essentially unchanged. Some of the complexes were stable for less than a day, whereas others appeared to be stable indefinitely. The compounds that formed ordered complexes were dimethylsulfoxide, formamide, hydrazine-hydrate, 1,1-dimethylhydrazine, ethylene glycol, glycerol, and pyridine. Clay-organic complexes that were prepared from methanol, ethanol, 1- and 2-propanol, acetone, acetic acid, propionic acid, acetaldehyde, N-methylformamide, methylethyl ketone, tetrahydrofuran, and K-acetate were stable only if they were immersed in the intercalating medium and had little or no stacking order.

Many of the organic compounds intercalated by the 8.4-Å hydrate are not known to be intercalated by non-hydrated kaolinite either directly or indirectly. Isolated water molecules appear to be keyed into the ditrigonal holes formed by the basal oxygen of the silicate tetrahedra of the 8.4-Å hydrate. These water molecules, referred to as “hole water,” and fluorine ions that had replaced ~20% of the inner-surface hydroxyls of the 8.4-Å phase sufficiently altered the interlayer bonding to allow an expansion of the inner-layer spaces by a variety of guest molecules. The presence of these guest molecules between the clay layers not only changed the basal spacing and perturbed the infrared (IR) bands arising from the inner-surface hydroxyls, it also shifted the position of the IR band arising from the inner hydroxyl.

Four hydrates with d(001) = 8.4, 8.6, and 10 Å (two types) were synthesized by intercalating kaolinite with dimethylsulfoxide and treating the intercalated clay with fluoride ions. X-ray powder diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, thermal gravimetric analysis, and kinetics of dehydration experiments have led to the identification of two types of interlayer water. One type of water (hole water) is situated in the ditrigonal holes of the silica tetrahedral surface; the second type (associated water) forms a discontinuous layer of mobile water. The 8.4-Å and 8.6-Å hydrates have only hole water, whereas the two synthetic 10-Å hydrates and halloysite(10Å) contain both hole and associated water. The hole water is probably hydrogen bonded to the basal oxygens of the silica tetrahedra or, in the 8-Å hydrates when fluorine exchanges for inner-surface hydroxyls, the water molecules may reorient and form stronger hydrogen bonds to the fluorine. Associated water forms water-water hydrogen bonds approximately equal in strength to liquid water but is less strongly bonded to the clay surfaces than hole water. At room temperature the hole and associated water in the 10-Å hydrates do not form an ice-like structure.

Hydrated kaolinite (d(001) = 10 Å) can be synthesized by mild heating of a kaolinite-organic suspension, allowing time for the clay to be intercalated by the organic solvent, and then dissolving a fluoride salt in the liquid. After mild heating of the suspension, the salt and organic solvent are removed by repeated water washings. The kaolinite retains interlayer water in the form of a 10-Å kaolinite hydrate. The influence of the intercalating agent, type of salt, concentration of salt, and the time of treatment on the synthesis of 10-Å hydrate was examined for several kaolinites. The most effective salt is NH4F; much smaller yields were obtained using KF and RbF. Not all organic molecules gave high yields of the hydrate; dimethyl sulfoxide, formamide, and hydrazine worked well but N-methyl formamide did not. The reaction between clay and salt resulted in the replacement of some hydroxyls by fluoride. This replacement was rapid; after 1 min of fluoride treatment a substantial yield of hydrate was obtained. The intercalation step separated the layers and also disordered the kaolinite, facilitating the F for OH replacement at or near crystallite edges. This replacement weakens the interlayer bonding at the edges and thereby reduces the possibility of layer collapse and attendant dehydration.

Factors that are potentially important in the pulmonary pathogenesis of asbestos and other mineral particles are: 1) morphology, 2) Fe-content, 3) solubility under intraphagosomal conditions, 4) value and sign of the surface potential of the particle, 5) hydrophobicity or hydrophilicity, 6) capacity to activate phagocytic leukocytes, and 7) duration of exposure to the particles. The order of importance of these factors in causing severe or fatal pulmonary pathogenicity is estimated to be: 1 > 3 > 7 > 6 ≫ 5 > 4 > 2. The order of pathogenicity of the minerals is estimated as: amphibole asbestos: crocidolite, tremolite, amosite > erionite > serpentine asbestos: chrysotile > talc > silica > simple metal oxides. Particle length, duration of exposure to the particles, and pre-treatment of the particles may however enhance the pathogenic potential of any of the lower-ranked particles.
