In the lead-up to the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) project, several next-generation radio telescopes and upgrades are already being built around the world. These include APERTIF (The Netherlands), ASKAP (Australia), e-MERLIN (UK), VLA (USA), e-EVN (based in Europe), LOFAR (The Netherlands), MeerKAT (South Africa), and the Murchison Widefield Array. Each of these new instruments has different strengths, and coordination of surveys between them can help maximise the science from each of them. A radio continuum survey is being planned on each of them with the primary science objective of understanding the formation and evolution of galaxies over cosmic time, and the cosmological parameters and large-scale structures which drive it. In pursuit of this objective, the different teams are developing a variety of new techniques, and refining existing ones. To achieve these exciting scientific goals, many technical challenges must be addressed by the survey instruments. Given the limited resources of the global radio-astronomical community, it is essential that we pool our skills and knowledge. We do not have sufficient resources to enjoy the luxury of re-inventing wheels. We face significant challenges in calibration, imaging, source extraction and measurement, classification and cross-identification, redshift determination, stacking, and data-intensive research. As these instruments extend the observational parameters, we will face further unexpected challenges in calibration, imaging, and interpretation. If we are to realise the full scientific potential of these expensive instruments, it is essential that we devote enough resources and careful study to understanding the instrumental effects and how they will affect the data. We have established an SKA Radio Continuum Survey working group, whose prime role is to maximise science from these instruments by ensuring we share resources and expertise across the projects. Here we describe these projects, their science goals, and the technical challenges which are being addressed to maximise the science return.

We investigate the correlation between the far-infrared (FIR) and radio continuum emission from NGC6946 on spatial scales between 0.9 and 17 kpc. We use the Herschel PACS (70, 100, 160μm) and SPIRE (250μm) data from the KINGFISH project. Separating the free-free and synchrotron components of the radio continuum emission, we find that FIR is better correlated with the free-free than the synchrotron emission. Compared to a similar study in M33 and M31, we find that the scale dependence of the synchrotron–FIR correlation in NGC6946 is more similar to M31 than M33. The scale dependence of the synchrotron–FIR correlation can be explained by the turbulent-to-ordered magnetic field ratio or, equivalently, the diffusion length of the cosmic ray electrons in these galaxies.

The strength and structure of cosmic magnetic fields is best studied by observations of radio continuum emission, its polarization and its Faraday rotation. Fields with a well-ordered spiral structure exist in many types of galaxies. Total field strengths in spiral arms and bars are 20–30 μG and dynamically important. Strong fields in central regions can drive gas inflows towards an active nucleus. The strongest regular fields (10–15 μG) are found in interarm regions, sometimes forming “magnetic spiral arms” between the optical arms. The typical degree of polarization is a few % in spiral arms, but high (up to 50%) in interarm regions. The detailed field structures suggest interaction with gas flows. Faraday rotation measures of the polarization vectors reveals large-scale patterns in several spiral galaxies which are regarded as signatures of large-scale (coherent) fields generated by dynamos. – Polarization observations with the forthcoming large radio telescopes will open a new era in the observation of magnetic fields and should help to understand their origin. Low-frequency radio synchrotron emission traces low-energy cosmic ray electrons which can propagate further away from their origin. LOFAR (30–240 MHz) will allow us to map the structure of weak magnetic fields in the outer regions and halos of galaxies, in galaxy clusters and in the Milky Way. Polarization at higher frequencies (1–10 GHz), to be observed with the EVLA, MeerKAT, APERTIF and the SKA, will trace magnetic fields in the disks and central regions of galaxies in unprecedented detail. All-sky surveys of Faraday rotation measures towards a dense grid of polarized background sources with ASKAP and the SKA are dedicated to measure magnetic fields in distant intervening galaxies and clusters, and will be used to model the overall structure and strength of the magnetic field in the Milky Way.

The origin of magnetic fields in the Universe is an open problem in astrophysics and fundamental physics. Forthcoming radio telescopes will open a new era in studying cosmic magnetic fields. Low-frequency radio waves will reveal the structure of weak magnetic fields in the outer regions and halos of galaxies and in intracluster media. At higher frequencies, the EVLA and the SKA will map the structure of magnetic fields in galaxies in unprecedented detail. All-sky surveys of Faraday rotation measures (RM) towards a huge number of polarized background sources with the SKA and its pathfinders will allow us to model the structure and strength of the regular magnetic fields in the Milky Way, the interstellar medium of galaxies, in galaxy clusters and the intergalactic medium.

Radio synchrotron emission, its polarization and its Faraday rotation are powerful tools to study the strength and structure of interstellar magnetic fields. The total intensity traces the strength and distribution of total magnetic fields. Total fields in gas-rich spiral arms and bars of nearby galaxies have strengths of 20–30 μGauss, due to the amplification of turbulent fields, and are dynamically important. In the Milky Way, the total field strength is about 6 μG near the Sun and several 100 μG in filaments near the Galactic Center. – The polarized intensity measures ordered fields with a preferred orientation, which can be regular or anisotropic fields. Ordered fields with spiral structure exist in grand-design, barred, flocculent and even in irregular galaxies. The strongest ordered fields are found in interarm regions, sometimes forming “magnetic spiral arms” between the optical arms. Halo fields are X-shaped, probably due to outflows. – The Faraday rotation of the polarization vectors traces coherent regular fields which have a preferred direction. In some galaxies Faraday rotation reveals large-scale patterns which are signatures of dynamo fields. However, in most galaxies the field has a complicated structure and interacts with local gas flows. In the Milky Way, diffuse polarized radio emission and Faraday rotation of the polarized emission from pulsars and background sources show many small-scale and large-scale magnetic features, but the overall field structure in our Galaxy is still under debate.

We investigate the cosmological evolution of large- and small-scale magnetic fields in galaxies at high redshifts. Results from simulations of hierarchical structure formation cosmology provide a tool to develop an evolutionary model of regular magnetic fields coupled to galaxy formation and evolution. Turbulence in protogalactic halos generated by thermal virialization can drive an efficient turbulent dynamo. The mean-field dynamo theory is used to derive the timescales of amplification and ordering of regular magnetic fields in disk and dwarf galaxies. For future observations with the SKA, we predict an anticorrelation at fixed redshift between galaxy size and the ratio between ordering scale and galaxy size. Undisturbed dwarf galaxies should host fully coherent fields at z < 1, spiral galaxies at z < 0.5.

We present deep observations of polarized radio emission of distant spiral galaxies with the Effelsberg 100-m telescope† at 4.8 GHz. These cross scans with sensitivity of 50 μJy or better open the possibility of a statistical study of magnetic field properties and internal Faraday rotation as a function of inclination for a large sample of unresolved galaxies. The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) will be able to detect polarization of spiral galaxies to high redshift, probing the evolution of magnetic fields in disk galaxies over cosmic time.

With sensitive radio observations of a Virgo Cluster spiral NGC 4254 we are able to decompose thermal and synchrotron radio emission and, based on the thermal component, construct the SFR distribution within the galaxy, unaffected by dust extinction. The mean SFR per unit area is several times higher than in other galaxies of similar Hubble type. Contrary to other Virgo spirals the SFR distribution is not spatially truncated, in concordance with the observed weak HI deficiency. We propose that the SFR enhancement and the observed disturbed morphology of this galaxy can be attributed to tidal triggering by another nearby cluster member.

We obtained VLA radio total power and polarization maps of a merging pair of galaxies NGC4038/39. The whole system is filled with bright extended radio emission with a high thermal fraction of ⋍ 50% at 10.45 GHz and very strong magnetic fields of ⋍ 20μG. A star-forming region at the southern end of the dark cloud complex extending between the galaxies has highly tangled magnetic fields reaching the strength of ⋍ 30μG, even larger than in both individual galaxies. The polarized components associated with the HI ridge at the base of one of the tidal tails and with the northern complex of dark clouds (weakly forming stars) have been identified. A relic magnetic spiral coincident with the northern galaxy has been found, too. Our data on the magnetic fields combined with those in HI, Hα, X-rays and in far infrared are used as a diagnostic tool to distinguish several physically distinct regions.
