We provide scaling relations for the Nusselt number $Nu$ and the friction coefficient $C_{S}$ in sheared Rayleigh–Bénard convection, i.e. in Rayleigh–Bénard flow with Couette- or Poiseuille-type shear forcing, by extending the Grossmann & Lohse (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 407, 2000, pp. 27–56, Phys. Rev. Lett., vol. 86, 2001, pp. 3316–3319, Phys. Rev. E, vol. 66, 2002, 016305, Phys. Fluids, vol. 16, 2004, pp. 4462–4472) theory to sheared thermal convection. The control parameters for these systems are the Rayleigh number $Ra$, the Prandtl number $Pr$ and the Reynolds number $Re_S$ that characterises the strength of the imposed shear. By direct numerical simulations and theoretical considerations, we show that, in turbulent Rayleigh–Bénard convection, the friction coefficients associated with the applied shear and the shear generated by the large-scale convection rolls are both well described by Prandtl's (Ergeb. Aerodyn. Vers. Gött., vol. 4, 1932, pp. 18–29) logarithmic friction law, suggesting some kind of universality between purely shear-driven flows and thermal convection. These scaling relations hold well for $10^6 \leq Ra \leq 10^8$, $0.5 \leq Pr \leq 5.0$, and $0 \leq Re_S \leq 10^4$.

We employ direct numerical simulations to investigate the heat transfer and flow structures in turbulent Rayleigh–Bénard convection in both cylindrical cells and laterally periodic domains, spanning an unprecedentedly wide range of aspect ratios $0.075 \leqslant \varGamma \leqslant 32$. We focus on Prandtl number ${Pr}=1$ and Rayleigh numbers ${{Ra}}=2\times 10^7$ and ${{Ra}}=10^8$. In both cases, with increasing aspect ratio, the heat transfer first increases, then reaches a maximum (which is more pronounced for the cylindrical case due to confinement effects), and then slightly goes down again before it finally saturates at the large aspect ratio limit, which is achieved already at $\varGamma \approx 4$. Already for $\varGamma \gtrsim 0.75$, the heat transfers in both cylindrical and laterally periodic domains become identical. The large-$\varGamma$ limit for the volume-integrated Reynolds number and the boundary layer thicknesses are also reached at $\varGamma \approx 4$. However, while the integral flow properties converge at $\varGamma \approx 4$, the confinement of a cylindrical domain impacts the temperature and velocity variance distributions up to $\varGamma \approx 16$, as thermal superstructures cannot form close to the sidewall.

Turbulent shear flows driven by a combination of a pressure gradient and buoyancy forcing are investigated using direct numerical simulations. Specifically, we consider the set-up of a differentially heated vertical channel subject to a Poiseuille-like horizontal pressure gradient. We explore the response of the system to its three control parameters: the Grashof number $Gr$, the Prandtl number $Pr$, and the Reynolds number $Re$ of the pressure-driven flow. From these input parameters, the relative strength of buoyancy driving to the pressure gradient can be quantified by the Richardson number $Ri=Gr/Re^2$. We compare the response of the mixed vertical convection configuration to that of mixed Rayleigh–Bénard convection, and find a nearly identical behaviour, including an increase in wall friction at higher $Gr$, and a drop in the heat flux relative to natural convection for $Ri=O(1)$. This closely matched response is despite vastly different flow structures in the systems. No large-scale organisation is visible in visualisations of mixed vertical convection – an observation that is confirmed quantitatively by spectral analysis. This analysis, combined with a statistical description of the wall heat flux, highlights how moderate shear suppresses the growth of small-scale plumes and reduces the likelihood of extreme events in the local wall heat flux. Vice versa, starting from a pure shear flow, the addition of thermal driving enhances the drag due to the emission of thermal plumes.

Melting and solidification in periodically time-modulated thermal convection are relevant for numerous natural and engineering systems, for example, glacial melting under periodic sun radiation and latent thermal energy storage under periodically pulsating heating. It is highly relevant for the estimation of melt rate and melt efficiency management. However, even the dynamics of a solid–liquid interface shape subjected to a simple sinusoidal heating has not yet been investigated in detail. In this paper, we offer a better understanding of the modulation frequency dependence of the melting and solidification front. We numerically investigate periodic melting and solidification in turbulent convective flow with the solid above and the melted liquid below, and sinusoidal heating at the bottom plate with the mean temperature equal to the melting temperature. We investigate how the periodic heating can prevent the full solidification, and the resulting flow structures and the quasi-equilibrium interface height. We further study the dependence on the heating modulation frequency. As the frequency decreases, we found two distinct regimes, which are ‘partially solid’ and ‘fully solid’. In the fully solid regime, the liquid freezes completely, and the effect of the modulation is limited. In the partially solid regime, the solid partially melts, and a steady or unsteady solid–liquid interface forms depending on the frequency. The interface height can be derived based on the energy balance through the interface. In the partially solid regime, the interface height oscillates periodically, following the frequency of modulation. Here, we propose a perturbation approach that can predict the dependency of the oscillation amplitude on the modulation frequency.

We consider the process of convective dissolution in a homogeneous and isotropic porous medium. The flow is unstable due to the presence of a solute that induces a density difference responsible for driving the flow. The mixing dynamics is thus driven by a Rayleigh–Taylor instability at the pore scale. We investigate the flow at the scale of the pores using Hele-Shaw type experiment with bead packs, two-dimensional direct numerical simulations and physical models. Experiments and simulations have been specifically designed to mimic the same flow conditions, namely matching porosities, high Schmidt numbers and linear dependency of fluid density with solute concentration. In addition, the solid obstacles of the medium are impermeable to fluid and solute. We characterise the evolution of the flow via the mixing length, which quantifies the extension of the mixing region and grows linearly in time. The flow structure, analysed via the centreline mean wavelength, is observed to grow in agreement with theoretical predictions. Finally, we analyse the dissolution dynamics of the system, quantified through the mean scalar dissipation, and three mixing regimes are observed. Initially, the evolution is controlled by diffusion, which produces solute mixing across the initial horizontal interface. Then, when the interfacial diffusive layer is sufficiently thick, it becomes unstable, forming finger-like structures and driving the system into a convection-dominated phase. Finally, when the fingers have grown sufficiently to touch the horizontal boundaries of the domain, the mixing reduces dramatically due to the absence of fresh unmixed fluid. With the aid of simple physical models, we explain the physics of the results obtained numerically and experimentally. The solute evolution presents a self-similar behaviour, and it is controlled by different length scales in each stage of the mixing process, namely the length scale of diffusion, the pore size and the domain height.

Direct numerical simulations are utilised to investigate mass-transfer processes at gas-evolving electrodes that experience successive formation and detachment of bubbles. The gas–liquid interface is modelled employing an immersed boundary method. We simulate the growth phase of the bubbles followed by their departure from the electrode surface in order to study the mixing induced by these processes. We find that the growth of the bubbles switches from a diffusion-limited mode at low to moderate fractional bubble coverages of the electrode to a reaction-limited growth dynamics at high coverages. Furthermore, our results indicate that the net transport within the system is governed by the effective buoyancy driving induced by the rising bubbles and that mechanisms commonly subsumed under the term ‘microconvection’ do not significantly affect the mass transport. Consequently, the resulting gas transport for different bubble sizes, current densities and electrode coverages can be collapsed onto one single curve and only depends on an effective Grashof number. The same holds for the mixing of the electrolyte when additionally taking the effect of surface blockage by attached bubbles into account. For the gas transport to the bubble, we find that the relevant Sherwood numbers also collapse onto a single curve when accounting for the driving force of bubble growth, incorporated in an effective Jakob number. Finally, linking the hydrogen transfer rates at the electrode and the bubble interface, an approximate correlation for the gas-evolution efficiency has been established. Taken together, these findings enable us to deduce parametrisations for all response parameters of the systems.

Rotational effects are commonly neglected when considering the dynamics of freely rising or settling isotropic particles. Here, we demonstrate that particle rotations play an important role for rising as well as for settling cylinders in situations when mass eccentricity, and thereby a new pendulum time scale, is introduced to the system. We employ two-dimensional simulations to study the motion of a single cylinder in a quiescent unbounded incompressible Newtonian fluid. This allows us to vary the Galileo number, density ratio, relative moment of inertia (MOI) and centre-of-mass (COM) offset systematically and beyond what is feasible experimentally. For certain buoyant density ratios, the particle dynamics exhibits a resonance mode, during which the coupling via the Magnus lift force causes a positive feedback between translational and rotational motions. This mode results in vastly different trajectories with significantly larger rotational and translational amplitudes and an increase of the drag coefficient easily exceeding a factor two. We propose a simple model that captures how the occurrence of the COM offset induced resonance regime varies, depending on the other input parameters, specifically the density ratio, the Galileo number and the relative MOI. Remarkably, depending on the input parameters, resonance can be observed for COM offsets as small as a few per cent of the particle diameter, showing that the particle dynamics can be highly sensitive to this parameter.

For dissolving active oil droplets in an ambient liquid, it is generally assumed that the Marangoni effect results in repulsive interactions, while the buoyancy effects caused by the density difference between the droplets, diffusing product and the ambient fluid are usually neglected. However, it has been observed in recent experiments that active droplets can form clusters due to buoyancy-driven convection (Krüger et al., Eur. Phys. J. E, vol. 39, 2016, pp. 1–9). In this study we numerically analyse the buoyancy effect, in addition to the propulsion caused by Marangoni flow (with its strength characterized by the Péclet number $Pe$). The buoyancy effects have their origin in (i) the density difference between the droplet and the ambient liquid, which is characterized by the Galileo number $Ga$; and (ii) the density difference between the diffusing product (i.e. filled micelles) and the ambient liquid, which can be quantified by a solutal Rayleigh number $Ra$. We analyse how the attracting and repulsing behaviour of neighbouring droplets depends on the control parameters $Pe$, $Ga$ and $Ra$. We find that while the Marangoni effect leads to the well-known repulsion between the interacting droplets, the buoyancy effect of the reaction product leads to buoyancy-driven attraction. At sufficiently large $Ra$, even collisions between the droplets can take place. Our study on the effect of $Ga$ further shows that with increasing $Ga$, the collision becomes delayed. Moreover, we derive that the attracting velocity of the droplets, which is characterized by a Reynolds number $Re_d$, is proportional to $Ra^{1/4}/( \ell /R)$, where $\ell /R$ is the distance between the neighbouring droplets normalized by the droplet radius. Finally, we numerically obtain the repulsive velocity of the droplets, characterized by a Reynolds number $Re_{rep}$, which is proportional to $PeRa^{-0.38}$. The balance of attractive and repulsive effect leads to $Pe\sim Ra^{0.63}$, which agrees well with the transition curve between the regimes with and without collision.

Iceberg melting is a critical factor for climate change. However, the shape of an iceberg is an often neglected aspect of its melting process. Our study investigates the influence of different ice shapes and ambient flow velocities on melt rates by conducting direct numerical simulations of a simplified system of bluff body flow. Our study focuses on the ellipsoidal shape, with the aspect ratio as the control parameter. We found the shape plays a crucial role in the melting process, resulting in significant variations in the melt rate between different shapes. Without flow, the optimal shape for a minimal melt rate is the disk (two-dimensional) or sphere (three-dimensional), due to the minimal surface area. However, as the ambient flow velocity increases, the optimal shape changes with the aspect ratio. We find that ice with an elliptical shape (when the long axis is aligned with the flow direction) can melt up to 10 % slower than a circular shape when exposed to flowing water. Following the approach considered by Huang et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 765, 2015, R3) for dissolving bodies, we provide a quantitative theoretical explanation for this optimal shape, based on the combined contributions from both surface-area effects and convective-heat-transfer effects. Our findings provide insight into the interplay between phase transitions and ambient flows, contributing to our understanding of the iceberg melting process and highlighting the need to consider the aspect-ratio effect in estimates of iceberg melt rates.

The presence of salt in seawater strongly affects the melt rate and the shape evolution of ice, both of utmost relevance in ice–ocean interactions and thus for the climate. To get a better quantitative understanding of the physical mechanics at play in ice melting in salty water, we numerically investigate the lateral melting of an ice block in stably stratified saline water. The developing ice shape from our numerical results shows good agreement with the experiments and theory from Huppert & Turner (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 100, 1980, pp. 367–384). Furthermore, we find that the melt rate of ice depends non-monotonically on the mean ambient salinity: it first decreases for increasing salt concentration until a local minimum is attained, and then increases again. This non-monotonic behaviour of the ice melt rate is due to the competition among salinity-driven buoyancy, temperature-driven buoyancy and salinity-induced stratification. We develop a theoretical model based on the force balance which gives a prediction of the salt concentration for which the melt rate is minimal, and is consistent with our data. Our findings give insight into the interplay between phase transitions and double-diffusive convective flows.

We numerically study the melting process of a solid layer heated from below such that a liquid melt layer develops underneath. The objective is to quantitatively describe and understand the emerging topography of the structures (characterized by the amplitude and wavelength), which evolve out of an initially smooth surface. By performing both two-dimensional (achieving Rayleigh number up to $Ra=10^{11}$) and three-dimensional (achieving Rayleigh number up to $Ra=10^9$) direct numerical simulations with an advanced finite difference solver coupled to the phase-field method, we show how the interface roughness is spontaneously generated by thermal convection. With increasing height of the melt the convective flow intensifies and eventually even becomes turbulent. As a consequence, the interface becomes rougher but is still coupled to the flow topology. The emerging structure of the interface coincides with the regions of rising hot plumes and descending cold plumes. We find that the roughness amplitude scales with the mean height of the liquid layer. We derive this scaling relation from the Stefan boundary condition and relate it to the non-uniform distribution of heat flux at the interface. For two-dimensional cases, we further quantify the horizontal length scale of the morphology, based on the theoretical upper and lower bounds given for the size of convective cells known from Wang et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett., vol. 125, 2020, 074501). These bounds agree with our simulation results. Our findings highlight the key connection between the morphology of the melting solid and the convective flow structures in the melt beneath.

Immiscible and incompressible liquid–liquid flows are considered in a Taylor–Couette geometry and analysed by direct numerical simulations coupled with the volume-of-fluid method and a continuum surface force model. The system Reynolds number $Re \equiv r_i \omega _i d / \nu$ is fixed to $960$, where the single-phase flow is in the steady Taylor vortex regime, whereas the secondary-phase volume fraction $\varphi$ and the system Weber number $We \equiv \rho r_i^2 \omega _i^2 d / \sigma$ are varied to study the interactions between the interface and the Taylor vortices. We show that different Weber numbers lead to two distinctive flow regimes, namely an advection-dominated regime and an interface-dominated regime. When $We$ is high, the interface is easily deformed because of its low surface tension. The flow patterns are then similar to the single-phase flow, and the system is dominated mainly by advection (advection-dominated regime). However, when $We$ is low, the surface tension is so large that stable interfacial structures with sizes comparable to the cylinder gap can exist. The background velocity field is modulated largely by these persistent structures, thus the overall flow dynamics is governed by the interface (interface-dominated regime). The effect of the interface on the global system response is assessed by evaluating the Nusselt number $Nu_{\omega }$ based on the non-dimensional angular velocity transport. It shows non-monotonic trends as functions of the volume fraction $\varphi$ for both low and high $We$. We explain how these dependencies are closely linked to the velocity and interfacial structures.

We numerically investigate turbulent Rayleigh–Bénard convection with gas bubbles attached to the hot plate, mimicking a core feature in electrolysis, catalysis or boiling. The existence of bubbles on the plate reduces the global heat transfer due to the much lower thermal conductivity of gases as compared with liquids and changes the structure of the boundary layers. The numerical simulations are performed in three dimensions at Prandtl number $\mbox{Pr}=4.38$ (water) and Rayleigh number $10^7\leqslant \mbox{Ra}\leqslant 10^8$. For simplicity, we assume the bubbles to be equally sized and having pinned contact lines. We vary the total gas-covered area fraction $0.18 \leqslant S_0 \leqslant 0.62$, the relative bubble height $0.02\leqslant h/H \leqslant 0.05$ (where $H$ is the height of the Rayleigh–Bénard cell), the bubble number $40 \leqslant n \leqslant 144$ and their spatial distribution. In all cases, asymmetric temperature profiles are observed, which we quantitatively explain based on the heat flux conservation at each horizontal section. We further propose the idea of using an equivalent single-phase set-up to mimic the system with attached bubbles. Based on this equivalence, we can calculate the heat transfer. Without introducing any free parameter, the predictions for the Nusselt number, the upper and lower thermal boundary layer thicknesses and the mean centre temperature agree well with the numerical results. Finally, our predictions also work for the cases with much larger $\mbox{Pr}$ (e.g. $400$), which indicates that our results can also be applied to predict the mass transfer in water electrolysis with bubbles attached to the electrode surface or in catalysis.

We investigate the counter-intuitive initial decrease and subsequent increase in the Nusselt number $Nu$ with increasing wall Reynolds number $Re_w$ in the sheared Rayleigh–Bénard (RB) system by studying the energy spectra of convective flux and turbulent kinetic energy for Rayleigh number $Ra = 10^{7}$, Prandtl number $Pr=1.0$ and inverse Richardson numbers $0 \leq 1/Ri \leq 10$. These energy spectra show two distinct high-energy regions corresponding to the large-scale superstructures in the bulk and small-scale structures in the boundary layer (BL) regions. A greater separation between these scales at the thermal BL height correlates to a higher $Nu$ and indicates that the BLs are more turbulent. The minimum $Nu$, which occurs at $1/Ri=1.0$, is accompanied by the smallest separation between the large- and small-scale structures at the thermal BL height. At $1/Ri=1.0$, we also observe the lowest value of turbulent kinetic energy normalized with the square of friction velocity within the thermal BL. Additionally, we find that the domain size has a limited effect on the heat and momentum transfer in the sheared RB system as long as the domain can accommodate the small-scale convective structures at the thermal BL height, signifying that capturing the large-scale superstructures is not essential to obtain converged values of $Nu$ and shear Reynolds number $Re_{\tau }$. When the domain is smaller than these small-scale convective structures, the overall heat and momentum transfer reduces drastically.

A scaling theory for the passive scalar transport in Couette flow, i.e. the flow between two parallel plates moving with different velocities, is proposed. This flow is determined by the bulk Reynolds number $Re_b$ and the Prandtl number $Pr$. In the turbulent regime, for moderate shear Reynolds number $Re_{\tau }$ and moderate $Pr$, we derive that the passive scalar transport characterised by the Nusselt number $Nu$ scales as $Nu \sim Pr^{1/2}Re_{\tau }^{2}Re_b^{-1}$. We then use the well-established scaling for the friction coefficient $C_f \sim Re_b^{-1/4}$ (corresponding to a shear Reynolds number $Re_{\tau } \sim Re_b^{7/8}$) which holds reasonably well within the range $3\times 10^{3} \leqslant Re_b \leqslant 10^{5}$, to obtain $Nu \sim Pr^{1/2}Re_b^{3/4}$ for the Nusselt number scaling. The theoretical results are tested against direct numerical simulations of Couette flows for the parameter ranges $81 \leqslant Re_b \leqslant 22361$ and $0.1 \leqslant Pr \leqslant 10$, finding good agreement. Analyses of the numerically obtained turbulent flow fields confirm logarithmic mean wall-parallel profiles of the velocity and the passive scalar in the inertial sublayer.

We perform direct numerical simulations to study the effect of the gravity centre offset in spherical Rayleigh–Bénard convection. When the gravity centre is shifted towards the south, we find that the shift of the gravity centre has a pronounced influence on the flow structures. At low Rayleigh number $Ra$, a steady-state large-scale meridional circulation induced by the baroclinic imbalance, created by the misalignment of the gravity potentials and isotherms, is formed. At high $Ra$, an energetic jet is created on the northern side of the inner sphere that is directed towards the outer sphere. The large-scale circulation induces a strong co-latitudinal dependence in the local heat flux. Nevertheless, the global heat flux is not affected by the changes in the large-scale flow organization induced by the gravity centre offset.

We study the statistics of passive scalars at $Pr=1$, for turbulent flow within a smooth straight pipe of circular cross section up to $Re_{\tau } \approx 6000$ using direct numerical simulation (DNS) of the Navier–Stokes equations. While featuring a general organisation similar to the axial velocity field, passive scalar fields show additional energy at small wavenumbers, resulting in a higher degree of mixing and in a $k^{-4/3}$ spectral inertial range. The DNS results highlight logarithmic growth of the inner-scaled bulk and mean centreline scalar values with the friction Reynolds number, implying an estimated scalar von Kármán constant $k_{\theta } \approx 0.459$, which also nicely fits the mean scalar profiles. The DNS data are used to synthesise a modified form of the classical predictive formula of Kader & Yaglom (Intl J. Heat Mass Transfer, vol. 15 (12), 1972, pp. 2329–2351), which points to some shortcomings of the original formulation. Universality of the mean core scalar profile in defect form is recovered, with very nearly parabolic shape. Logarithmic growth of the buffer-layer peak of the scalar variance is found in the Reynolds number range under scrutiny, which well conforms with Townsend's attached-eddy hypothesis, whose validity is also supported by the spectral maps. The behaviour of the turbulent Prandtl number shows good universality in the outer wall layer, with values $Pr_t \approx 0.84$, as also found in previous studies, but closer to unity near the wall, where existing correlations do not reproduce the observed trends.

Moderate rotation and moderate horizontal confinement similarly enhance the heat transport in Rayleigh–Bénard convection (RBC). Here, we systematically investigate how these two types of flow stabilization together affect the heat transport. We conduct direct numerical simulations of confined-rotating RBC in a cylindrical set-up at Prandtl number $\textit {Pr}=4.38$, and various Rayleigh numbers $2\times 10^{8}\leqslant {\textit {Ra}}\leqslant 7\times 10^{9}$. Within the parameter space of rotation (given as inverse Rossby number $0\leqslant {\textit {Ro}}^{-1}\leqslant 40$) and confinement (given as height-to-diameter aspect ratio $2\leqslant \varGamma ^{-1}\leqslant 32$), we observe three heat transport maxima. At lower $ {\textit {Ra}}$, the combination of rotation and confinement can achieve larger heat transport than either rotation or confinement individually, whereas at higher $ {\textit {Ra}}$, confinement alone is most effective in enhancing the heat transport. Further, we identify two effects enhancing the heat transport: (i) the ratio of kinetic and thermal boundary layer thicknesses controlling the efficiency of Ekman pumping, and (ii) the formation of a stable domain-spanning flow for an efficient vertical transport of the heat through the bulk. Their interfering efficiencies generate the multiple heat transport maxima.

We numerically investigate turbulent Rayleigh–Bénard convection through two immiscible fluid layers, aiming to understand how the layer thickness and fluid properties affect the heat transfer (characterized by the Nusselt number $\mbox {Nu}$) in two-layer systems. Both two- and three-dimensional simulations are performed at fixed global Rayleigh number $\mbox {Ra}=10^8$, Prandtl number $\mbox {Pr}=4.38$ and Weber number $\mbox {We}=5$. We vary the relative thickness of the upper layer between $0.01 \le \alpha \le 0.99$ and the thermal conductivity coefficient ratio of the two liquids between $0.1 \le \lambda _k \le 10$. Two flow regimes are observed. In the first regime at $0.04\le \alpha \le 0.96$, convective flows appear in both layers and $\mbox {Nu}$ is not sensitive to $\alpha$. In the second regime at $\alpha \le 0.02$ or $\alpha \ge 0.98$, convective flow only exists in the thicker layer, while the thinner one is dominated by pure conduction. In this regime, $\mbox {Nu}$ is sensitive to $\alpha$. To predict $\mbox {Nu}$ in the system in which the two layers are separated by a unique interface, we apply the Grossmann–Lohse theory for both individual layers and impose heat flux conservation at the interface. Without introducing any free parameter, the predictions for $\mbox {Nu}$ and for the temperature at the interface agree well with our numerical results and previous experimental data.
