Iroquoian groups inhabiting the St. Lawrence Valley in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries AD practiced agriculture and supplemented their diet with fish and a variety of wild plants and terrestrial animals. Important gaps remain in our knowledge of Iroquoian foodways, including how pottery was integrated to culinary practices and the relative importance of maize in clay-pot cooking. Lipid analyses carried out on 32 potsherds from the Dawson site (Montreal, Canada) demonstrate that pottery from this village site was used to prepare a range of foodstuffs—primarily freshwater fish and maize, but possibly also other animals and plants. The importance of aquatic resources is demonstrated by the presence of a range of molecular compounds identified as biomarkers for aquatic products, whereas the presence of maize could only be detected through isotopic analysis. Bayesian modeling suggests that maize is present in all samples and is the dominant product in at least 40% of the potsherds analyzed. This combination of analytical techniques, applied for the first time to Iroquoian pottery, provides a glimpse into Iroquoian foodways and suggests that sagamité was part of the culinary traditions at the Dawson site.

Complex research problems are increasingly addressed by interdisciplinary, collaborate research projects generating large amounts of heterogeneous amounts of data. The overarching processing, analysis and availability of data are critical success factors for these research efforts. Data repositories enable long term availability of such data for the scientific community. The findability and therefore reusability strongly builds on comprehensive annotations of datasets stored in repositories. Often generic metadata schema are used to annotate data. In this publication we describe the implementation of discipline specific metadata into a data repository to provide more contextual information about data. To avoid extra workload for researchers to provide such metadata a workflow with standardised data templates for automated metadata extraction during the ingest process has been developed. The enriched metadata are in the following used in the development of two repository plugins for data comparison and data visualisation. The added values of discipline-specific annotations and derived search features to support matching and reusable data is then demonstrated by use cases of two Collaborative Research Centres (CRC 1368 and CRC 1153).

Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) in men with prostate cancer (PCa) is associated with significant side effects. With the transition of PCa from a foudroyant course to a chronic disease, managing these side effects has become increasingly important. There is growing evidence that nutritional changes and physical activity are beneficial in these patients. Here we examine the impact of written patient information on the physical activity and dietary habits of PCa patients receiving ADT and behaviour changes between baseline and 1 year, in the open-label, non-interventional LEAN study. In total, 959 patients with advanced hormone-sensitive PCa requiring ADT with the Leuprorelin Sandoz® implant were included from January 2014 to July 2015 and followed for ≥ 12 months. At the start of the study, urologists received a questionnaire concerning the written information provided to patients regarding their disease, patient advocacy groups, diet and physical activity. Patients received a questionnaire on their dietary habits and physical activity at the start and end of the study. Urologists from 147 study centres and 540 patients responded to the questionnaires. While 69 % of these patients received disease-specific information, only 30 % and 17 % received information regarding nutrition and physical activity, respectively. The majority of urologists estimate that their patients rarely or never follow guidance on nutrition or physical activity, yet > 90 % of patients indicate they would make use of this information, if provided. Few patients showed behavioural changes between baseline and 1 year without evident differences between patients that received information and those that did not.

Wildlife is an essential component of all ecosystems. Most places in the globe do not have local, timely information on which species are present or how their populations are changing. With the arrival of new technologies, camera traps have become a popular way to collect wildlife data. However, data collection has increased at a much faster rate than the development of tools to manage, process and analyse these data. Without these tools, wildlife managers and other stakeholders have little information to effectively manage, understand and monitor wildlife populations. We identify four barriers that are hindering the widespread use of camera trap data for conservation. We propose specific solutions to remove these barriers integrated in a modern technology platform called Wildlife Insights. We present an architecture for this platform and describe its main components. We recognize and discuss the potential risks of publishing shared biodiversity data and a framework to mitigate those risks. Finally, we discuss a strategy to ensure platforms like Wildlife Insights are sustainable and have an enduring impact on the conservation of wildlife.

The Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research supported a research conference on Bantu Origins in Sub-Saharan Africa, which was held from March 25 through 30, 1968, at the Center for Continuing Education, University of Chicago. The participants in the meeting were J. Desmond Clark, University of California at Berkeley; David Dalby, School of Oriental and African Studies, London; J. M. J. de Wet, University of Illinois, Urbana; Christopher Ehret, Van Nuys, California; Brian M. Fagan, University of California at Santa Barbara; Geoffrey Gaherty, University of Toronto; Jack Harland, University of Illinois, Urbana; Thomas N. Huffman, University of Illinois; Charles M. Keller, University of Illinois, Urbana; Roland Oliver, School of Oriental and African Studies, London; Irvine Richardson, Michigan State University, East Lansing; Albert C. Spaulding, University of California at Santa Barbara; Jan Vansina, University of Wisconsin, Madison; Frank Willett, Northwestern University; and C. C. Wrigley, University of Sussex. They were selected from a broad range of disciplines and spent five days in free-ranging discussions on Bantu origins and its related research problems. No formal papers were presented, thereby leaving maximum time for discussion, nor is any publication resulting from the conference planned. This brief report summarizes some of the general conclusions of the meeting and sets out certain recommendations made by participants at the conference; a draft was circulated to all the delegates for examination prior to publication.

This paper outlines four stages of the Bantu expansion: first, the initial push through the equatorial forest from the northern to the southern woodlands; second, the occupation of the southern woodland belt from coast to coast; third, the colonization of the Tanzania, Kenya and southern Somali coastline and of the northern sector of the lake region; fourth, the colonization south-wards, north-westwards and north-eastwards from this extended nucleus. The evidence for the first stage is largely linguistic and is likely to remain so. The outlines of the fourth stage can be established very largely from traditional evidence. It is for chronological data concerning the second and third stages that we can now turn hopefully to archaeology. In both these stages the Bantu expansion seems to have coincided fairly closely with the spread of the Iron Age; and, if the spread of the Iron Age through the area north of the southern woodlands can now be traced in something like the detail which we already have for Zambia and Rhodesia, the mystery of the Bantu expansion will have been largely unravelled.
