The Source Clays Program of The Clay Minerals Society was initiated in 1972 to distribute a set of reference clays, so that distributed clays could be identical for all recipients. Because most clays do not consist of a single phase, the immediate objective was not to produce a pure product consisting of one clay mineral, but to provide a uniform product. These materials were collected and processed carefully, and sufficient amounts were collected so that material was available for researchers for many years, Large numbers of researchers were thereby assured of working on identical material. Initial descriptions of these materials were presented in the Data Handbook (van Olphen and Fripiat, 1979). An updated version of this book was suggested several years ago because of the availability of new analytical techniques and to provide descriptions of material added to the reference set since 1979.

End members and species defined with permissible ranges of composition are presented for the true micas, the brittle micas and the interlayer-cation-deficient micas. The determination of the crystallochemical formula for different available chemical data is outlined, and a system of modifiers and suffixes is given to allow the expression of unusual chemical substitutions or polytypic stacking arrangements. Tables of mica synonyms, varieties, ill-defined materials and a list of names formerly or erroneously used for micas are presented. The Mica Subcommittee was appointed by the Commission on New Minerals and Mineral Names (“Commission”) of the International Mineralogical Association (IMA). The definitions and recommendations presented were approved by the Commission.

The transformation process between palygorskite and smectite was studied by examining the morphological and structural relationships between these two minerals in an assemblage from the Meigs Member of the Hawthorne Formation, southern Georgia. Studied samples were related to an alteration horizon with a tan clay unit above and a blue clay unit below. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to study the mechanism of transformation.

From AFM data, both clay units contain euhedral palygorskite fibers. Many fibers are found as parallel intergrowths joined along the [010] direction to form ‘raft-like’ bundles. Degraded fibers, which are common in the tan clay, have a distinctly segmented morphology, suggesting a dissolution texture. Many of the altered palygorskite fibers in the tan clay exhibit an oriented overgrowth of another mineral phase, presumably smectite, displaying a platy morphology. This latter mineral forms along the length of the palygorskite crystals with an interface parallel to {010} of the palygorskite. The resulting grain structures have an elongate ‘wing-like’ morphology.

Imaging by TEM of tan clay material shows smectite lattice-fringe lines intergrown with 2:1 layer ribbon modules (polysomes) of the palygorskite. These features indicate an epitaxial overgrowth of smectite on palygorskite and illustrate the structural relationship between platy overgrowths on fibers observed in AFM data. The epitaxial relationship is described as {010} [001] palygorskite ‖ {010} [001] smectite.

Energy dispersive spectroscopy indicates that the smectite is ferrian montmorillonite. Polysomes of palygorskite fibers involved in these textures commonly vary and polysome widths are consistent with double tetrahedral chains (10.4 Å), triple tetrahedral chains (14.8 Å), quadruple tetrahedral chains (21.7 Å) and quintuple tetrahedral chains (24.5 Å).

The transformation of palygorskite to smectite and the resulting intergrowths will cause variations in bulk physical properties of palygorskite-rich clays. The observation of this transformation in natural samples suggests that this transformation mechanism may be responsible for the lower abundance of palygorskite in Mesozoic and older sediments.

A microtexture analysis by TEM and AFM of palygorskite deposits from the Hawthorne Formation, southern Georgia is given. Palygorskite is the dominant mineral comprising an average of 65–70% of the sample volume with smaller volumes of smectite, illite and kaolinite. Morphologic observations indicate that the palygorskite formed in an unconfined environment, such as in the water column or in open-pore space. Some palygorskite textures appear to be secondary growths filling voids. An unusual texture is observed where smectite or illite-smectite (Reichweite, R = 0) form epitaxially on detrital illite and kaolinite particles. Oxides of Fe and Ti are common, and authigenic cassiterite is present but rare. Apatite is a common trace mineral in these sediments and occurs in a variety of textures. Apatite occurs as clusters which are believed to be small fecal pellets. These clusters have been partially dissolved and recrystallized and the crystals in the clusters are 50–100 µm in diameter. Other apatite crystals occur either as single crystals or in clusters that are not associated with fecal pellets.

The textural data of this study suggest that there was an evolving and complex mineralogical and geochemical system during and after deposition of the palygorskite deposits in the Hawthorne. The epitaxial overgrowths of smectite on detrital illite and kaolinite particles indicate an intermittent stratified water column occurring in the system. Freshwater was introduced into the system from the northeast of the Apalachicola embayment and overrode more saline water in the southwest portion of the embayment. The results of this study are consistent with previous environmental interpretations and provide additional details.

The definition of ‘clay’ was first formalized in 1546 by Agricola. It has been revised many times since, although the fundamentals involving plasticity, particle size, and hardening on firing were retained by most. For an exhaustive account of the history of the definition to 1963, the reader is referred to Mackenzie (1963). More recent developments may be found in Weaver (1989).

The definition of clay raises the important issue of clay constituents and, implicitly, the definition of ‘clay mineral'. Mackenzie (1963, p. 15) noted the inappropriateness of defining clay mineral as “any mineral which occurs in clay” since, among several reasons, it would include many accessory minerals that are not characteristic of clay.

Kogure and co-workers have published several papers reporting the stacking structures of various 2:1 layer phyllosilicates (e.g. aspidolite, Kogure et al. (2004); wonesite, Kogure et al. (2005); pyrophyllite, Kogure et al. (2006)), mainly by using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM). However, there is ambiguity in wording that refers to the lateral displacement between two tetrahedral sheets across the interlayer regions. Zvyagin et al. (1969) used the symbol “τ” for this displacement, which describes the structures of pyrophyllite and talc, but no universally accepted wording was used for other 2:1 phyllosilicates or 1:1 phyllosilicates.

The purpose of this report is to describe the appropriate use of indices relating to crystallinity, such as the ‘crystallinity index’, the ‘Hinckley index’, the ‘Kü bler index’, and the ‘Árkai index’. A ‘crystalline’ solid is defined as a solid consisting of atoms, ions, or molecules packed together in a periodic arrangement. A ‘crystallinity index’ is purported to be a measure of crystallinity, although there is uncertainty about what this means (see below). This report discusses briefly the nature of order, disorder and crystallinity in phyllosilicates and discusses why the use of a ‘crystallinity index’ should be avoided. If possible, it is suggested that indices be referred to using the name of the author who originally described the parameter, as in ‘Hinckley index’ or ‘Kübler index’, or in honour of a researcher who investigated the importance of the parameter extensively, as in ‘Árkai index’.

Brindley et al. (1951) reported the earliest efforts to obtain international collaboration on nomenclature and classification of clay minerals, initiated at the International Soil Congress in Amsterdam in 1950. Since then, national clay groups were formed, and they proposed various changes in nomenclature at group meetings of the International Clay Conferences. Most of the national clay groups have representation on the Nomenclature Committee of the Association Internationale pour l'Etude des Argiles (AIPEA, International Association for the Study of Clays), which was established in 1966. The precursor committee to the AIPEA Nomenclature Committee was the Nomenclature Subcommittee of the Comité International pour l'Etude des Argiles (OPEA, International Committee for the Study of Clays).

1. Young rats were fed on diets containing heated or unheated soya-bean flour.

2. Feeding unheated soya-bean flour decreased concentrations of vitamin B12 in liver, kidneys and blood serum, urinary excretion of sulphate and concentration of reduced glutathione in liver. Blood glutathione level and urinary excretion of methylmalonic acid and formimino-glutamic acid following loads of propionate and histidine, respectively, were increased.

3. Supplementing a diet of unheated soya-bean flour with vitamin B12, had no effect on the level of reduced glutathione in the liver. Adding methionine to this diet decreased excretion of methylmalonic acid and the level of glutathione in blood.

4. The activity of liver methyl-tetrahydrofolate: L-homocysteine S-methyltransferase was not affected by the nature of dietary soya-bean flour nor by supplementation with vitamin B12

5. It is concluded that heat-labile substances present in soya-bean flour induce metabolic changes which can bring about an increased requirement for vitamin B12, and a deficiency of sulphur-containing amino acids.
