Imidazolinone herbicides injure currently available commercial field corn cultivars; however, cultivars resistant to these herbicides have been developed. Sicklepod, Texas panicum, and annual morningglory control using AC 263,222 (36 and 72 g ai/ha), imazethapyr (36 and 72 g ai/ha), or nicosulfuron (35 g ai/ha) applied POST at 2,4, and 6 wk after planting were evaluated in imidazolinone-tolerant corn. Studies were conducted at Attapulgus and Plains, Georgia from 1992 through 1993. Nicosulfuron and AC 263,222 at 72 g/ha controlled Texas panicum at least 87% when applied 2 wk after planting. Imazethapyr did not consistently control Texas panicum or sicklepod, regardless of application rate. AC 263,222 at both rates and nicosulfuron controlled sicklepod at least 86% when applied 2 wk after planting; however, later application or application under dry conditions generally resulted in reduced control. All herbicides controlled the entireleaf and pitted morningglory complex at least 84% when applied 2 wk after planting. Imidazolinone-tolerant corn was tolerant to all herbicides, regardless of rate and timing, and generally yielded greater when weeds were controlled early in the season.

Background: Social phobia frequently occurs as a comorbid condition, with high rates reported among people with psychosis. Little is known about the nature of social anxiety in this population or whether current psychological theories apply. Aims: This paper aims to develop and pilot a suitable measure to explore imagery experienced by participants with comorbid psychosis and social anxiety and to provide preliminary indications as to its nature. Method: A semi-structured interview exploring imagery was used with seven participants (adapted from Hackmann, Surawy and Clark, 1998) and the results were analysed using qualitative template analysis. Results: Initial indications from this sample suggest that some participants experience typical social anxiety images, as identified by Hackmann et al. (1998). However, some experience images that appear more threatening, and may be related to residual psychotic paranoia. Image perspective was also explored: typical social anxiety images tended to be seen from an observer perspective, while those that may have been more related to psychosis tended to be seen from a field perspective. Conclusions: This exploratory study has facilitated the careful adaptation and development of an imagery interview for use in this population and has suggested areas for further research and raised questions around clinical implications.

The stability of the Ways of Coping (Revised) Questionnaire over time was assessed by comparing the scores of 68 mothers and 53 fathers of school-aged children with Down's syndrome over a 3-year time interval on the five coping strategy subscales described by Knussen et al. (1992). For this analysis, mothers' and fathers' scores were analysed separately. It was shown by t tests that mothers' and fathers' scores on the coping strategy subscales had not significantly changed over the three-year period. Time 1 and Time 2 scores on all of the coping subscales were strongly positively associated, with the exception of fathers' scores on the Stoicism subscale. Test–retest reliability was adequate for all subscales except mothers' scores on the Passive Acceptance subscale and fathers' scores on the Stoicism subscale. These results, by demonstrating the stability of the Ways of Coping (Revised) Questionnaire over a 3-year time period, further illustrate the utility of this instrument for investigating coping in families with special problems.

This article deals with the reaction of the Colonial Office to the problems—commercial and military—posed for the Gambia by the outbreak of the First World War. It argues that in the Colonial Office discussions about these problems two distinctly different attitudes can be distinguished. The younger junior officials tended to advocate government intervention to ameliorate specific economic problems, while the political heads and senior officials remained firmly attached to the dogmas of laissez faire. Conversely, the former group did not share the doubts of the latter as to whether the dogmas of patriotic bravery should be made to apply to African natives.

A population balance analysis of the statistical distribution of substrates over reversed micelles indicates the importance of accounting for concentration fluctuations within the micelles in interpreting observed enhancements in enzymatically-catalysed reactions in reversed micellar media. When the reactions are slow relative to the rates of solubilizate exchange via micellar coalescence and redispersion processes, analytical solutions to the detailed population balance equations are obtained, and the connection between Michaelis-Menten kinetics in reversed micellar media and bulk aqueous solution is made. It is shown that the finite occupancy number of the micelles at low water content leads to a statistical distribution of substrates over the micelle population, and that this can give rise to changes in the apparent reaction kinetics, even in the absence of changes in the intrinsic reaction parameters themselves. The model predictions are in good qualitative agreement with reported experimental results.

X-ray scattering techniques at grazing incidence have been used to characterize single quantum well hetero–structures. Double–and triple-axis diffractometry has been used to determine lattice mismatch and layer thickness of a 250Å thick layer of AlInAs grown by MBE on an InP substrate and capped by a 45Å GaAs layer. Reflectivity measurements in the triple – crystal mode permit accurate measurement of individual layer thicknesses, relative electron density and interface roughnesses on the Angstrom level.

Silicon oxynitride thin films made by RF reactive sputtering can be made with varying composition along the silicon dioxide - silicon nitride tie line by control of the sputtering gases. Compositional determination was made by the Rutherford backscattering technique. A simple model relating film composition to the composition of the reactive gases is proposed which fits the experimental results.

Euclid’s definition of two parallel straight lines seems to be the correct one for the absolute ideal of a plane and of a straight line. The conception of a line at infinity, it would seem, should be stated if used in some such words as these. Points may be supposed to exist at such a distance from the points generally considered in a plane that their distances from all such points in the plane may be regarded as equal, i.e. the differences of these distances may in general be regarded as negligible. These points, as a first approximation, may, under certain circumstances, be regarded, when considered in relationship to points at a finite distance, as lying on a straight line. Parallel straight lines may be regarded—for most practical purposes—as far as points at a finite distance are concerned, as intersecting at one of these points.
