Chronic constipation is a prevalent gastrointestinal condition affecting approximately 10% of the global population(1) and is associated with substantial healthcare costs and quality of life impairments in the UK(2). While the aetiology of chronic constipation is not fully understood, lower dietary fibre intake is associated with greater risk of constipation(3) and consumption of fruits, vegetables, and wholegrains is recommended within clinical guidelines. Although not diagnostic for constipation, low stool weight is a common feature and is associated with greater risk of colorectal cancer(4); yet few studies have ever measured stool weight in constipation. This study investigated associations between frequency of plant food intake and stool weight in people with constipation.

Baseline data from a dietary intervention trial were analysed, which included participants meeting Rome IV criteria for constipation. Self-reported data on habitual consumption of nine plant food categories were collected using a validated tool. Participants performed 7-day total stool collection, which was weighed on the same weighing scales at the research centre. Associations between intake frequency for each plant food category and daily stool weight (total stool weight divided by 7 days) were analysed using independent-samples t-tests (SPSS, version 28, p<0.05 considered significant).

Ninety-nine people with Rome IV constipation (89% female; mean [ ±SD] age 32.4 [ ± 12.4] y; BMI 23.0 [ ±3.2] kg/m2) provided 7-day total stool collections. Mean ( ± SD) stool weight was 72.5±47.2 g/day (minimum 2.1 g/day; maximum 280.6 g/day). Stool weight was significantly higher among those consuming fruit once or more per day (86.2±48.2 g/day), compared with those consuming fruit less than once per day (62.4±44.1 g/day; p = 0.012). Stool weight was also higher among those consuming vegetables once or more per day (98.6±59.1 g/day) compared with those eating vegetables less than once per day (62.2±37.2 g/day; p<0.001). Differences for green salad (79.6±52.1 g/day; 63.3±38.5 g/day; p = 0.088) and high-fibre breads (84.1±46.6 g/day; 65.1±46.6 g/day; p = 0.05) were borderline significant, when comparing those consuming these more than once per week, compared with once or less per week (respectively). No significant differences were found for frequency of consuming fruit juices, potatoes, vegetable soups/stews, high-fibre cereals, or beans and lentils.

This is the most comprehensive analysis to date of measured stool weight in constipation, and its association with plant food intake. Despite presence of constipation, participants with higher intakes of fruit and vegetables had a greater daily stool weight; an important feature associated with lower colorectal cancer risk(4). However, intakes were not sufficient to manage their constipation symptoms. Intervention studies investigating potential benefits from increasing fruit and vegetable intakes in people with constipation are required and are currently underway.

Despite the considerable advances in the last years, the health information systems for health surveillance still need to overcome some critical issues so that epidemic detection can be performed in real time. For instance, despite the efforts of the Brazilian Ministry of Health (MoH) to make COVID-19 data available during the pandemic, delays due to data entry and data availability posed an additional threat to disease monitoring. Here, we propose a complementary approach by using electronic medical records (EMRs) data collected in real time to generate a system to enable insights from the local health surveillance system personnel. As a proof of concept, we assessed data from São Caetano do Sul City (SCS), São Paulo, Brazil. We used the “fever” term as a sentinel event. Regular expression techniques were applied to detect febrile diseases. Other specific terms such as “malaria,” “dengue,” “Zika,” or any infectious disease were included in the dictionary and mapped to “fever.” Additionally, after “tokenizing,” we assessed the frequencies of most mentioned terms when fever was also mentioned in the patient complaint. The findings allowed us to detect the overlapping outbreaks of both COVID-19 Omicron BA.1 subvariant and Influenza A virus, which were confirmed by our team by analyzing data from private laboratories and another COVID-19 public monitoring system. Timely information generated from EMRs will be a very important tool to the decision-making process as well as research in epidemiology. Quality and security on the data produced is of paramount importance to allow the use by health surveillance systems.

Regarding the low number of embryos that reach the blastocyst stage when cultured in vitro, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of quercetin on pre-implantation mouse (Mus musculus) embryos obtained using in vitro fertilization, especially during the passage from morula to blastocyst. Furthermore, we studied whether quercetin also affected the expression of hypoxia-inducible factor 1α (HIF-1α). The culture medium for the embryos was supplemented with quercetin, for long or short periods of time, and then the development potential, total cell number, apoptosis rates and expression of HIF-1α were studied to determine the effect of quercetin. Embryos failed to develop when cultured for long periods of time with quercetin, implying the possible toxic effects of this, alternatively antioxidant, compound. However, a short culture from morula to blastocyst significantly improved the development potential of in vitro produced embryos, increasing the final total cell number and reducing the apoptosis rate, observing similar results to those embryos cultured in low-oxygen concentrations or developed in utero. Furthermore, in embryos treated with quercetin for 2 or 4 h we found an increase in HIF-1α compared with untreated embryos. This work could imply a way to use quercetin in fertility clinics to improve the production of healthy blastocysts and, consequently, increase the success rates in assisted reproduction techniques.

Animal mass mortality events (MMEs) will increase with weather and climate extremes. MMEs can add significant stress to ecosystems through extraordinary nutrient pulses or contribute to potential disease transmission risks. Given their efficient removal of carrion biomass from landscapes, we argue here for the potential of scavenger guilds to be a key nature-based solution to mitigating MME effects. However, we caution that scavenger guilds alone will not be a silver bullet. It is critical for further research to identify how the composition of scavenger guilds and the magnitude of MMEs will determine when scavengers will buffer the impacts of such events on ecosystems and when intervention might be required. Some MMEs are too large for scavengers to remove efficiently, and there is a risk of MMEs subsidizing pest species, altering nutrient cycling or leading to disease spread. Prioritizing native scavenger taxa in conservation management policies may help to boost ecosystem resilience through preserving their key ecological services. This should be part of a multi-pronged approach to MME mitigation that combines scavenger conservation with practices such as carcass dispersal or removal when exceeding a threshold quantity. Policymakers are urged to identify such thresholds and to recognize both the insects and the vertebrate scavengers that could act as allies for mitigating the emerging problem of climate-driven MMEs.

The Scarr–Rowe effect is a gene × environment interaction, which is characterized by a negative association between exposure to low socioeconomic status (SES) environments and the additive heritability of cognitive ability. Utilizing a polygenic score for educational attainment (EA3), it was found that the two-way interaction between EA3 and parental educational attainment (EA; used as a proxy for parental SES) was a significant positive predictor of participants’ composite cognitive ability (IQ) score (β = .018, SE = .008, p = .028) after controlling hierarchically for the direct effects of (population-stratification-controlled) EA3, parental EA, and 20 distinct interaction terms (10 involving the interactions between the principal components [PCs] and EA3, and 10 involving the interaction between the PCs and parental EA). The presence of this interaction is consistent with the Scarr–Rowe effect, as the expressivity of EA3 on cognitive ability increases with increasing parental EA. No statistically significant sex differences in the effect magnitudes were found, although the effect was significantly present in the female but not male sample.

In 2009, Joan Y. Chiao, one of the leading experts in Cultural Neuroscience, labeled the research field as „a once and future discipline”. Ten years ago neuroscientists began to study cultural phenomena applying functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI). Since then the number of publications and research grants related to this topic has tremendously increased. This was reason enough to examine the concepts of culture implicated, but rarely explicitly discussed, in these studies. Therefore we analyzed 42 English language manuscripts of original fMRI studies spanning from the advent of Cultural Neuroscience in the year 2000 to 2010 published in peer-reviewed journals (indexed in large databases [MEDLINE, PsychInfo, PubMed). Common to all of them were cultural comparisons between divided groups and communities, as e.g. black vs. white, easterners vs. westerners, Asian vs. Caucasian, Americans vs. Turks.

We reviewed the manuscripts with regard to the following aspects: type of comparison, the conveyed concept of culture using the classification by Reckwitz [normative, totality-oriented, differentiation-theoretical and the meaning- and knowledge-oriented], implicit valuation of the comparisons, and the artifact of the comparison. We extracted two main lines of reasoning:

1. 1) Universal models for the interaction between cultures and

2. 2) investigations pursuing a differentiation of divided cultural groups.

Both lines tend to simplify culture as an inflexible set of traits, specificities or biological diversities. We argue against the rigid understanding of culture, point out its disguised valuation and risks considering the Hackingian ‘looping effect’.

Concentrates-fed lamb meat is often associated with an unfavourable lipid profile (high levels of saturated and/or n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids; SFA and PUFA). For this reason, Spanish sheep producers from Mediterranean areas are turning to traditional grazing by ewes to obtain healthier lamb meat. The objective of this research was to determine the effects of maternal grazing on the fatty acid (FA) composition of weaned lamb meat. The ewes (Segureña breed) were allocated to two different rearing systems during pregnancy (5 months) and lactation (45 days): (i) feeding indoors on barley grain and lucerne pellets; (ii) grazing on cereal stubble, fallow land and seasonal pastures consisting of Mediterranean shrubs, herbs and trees. Two groups of 20 autumn and spring lambs were sampled. The lambs were weaned at 13.1±0.9 kg and 45.0±4.1 days age and fed on grain-based concentrates until they reached 24.8±2.1 kg live weight (light lambs slaughtered at 98.3±3.6 days of age). The FA content was determined in the intramuscular loin fat by gas chromatography using a flame ionization detector. The ewe diet did not affect the levels of the main lamb FAs (C18:1c+t, C16:0 and C18:2c), and so did not provide any additional reduction in fat saturation. Saturated fatty acids represented around 40% of total FAs determined in the meat. Ewe grazing acted as an n-3 PUFA-promoting diet, providing a lamb meat with a lower n-6/n-3 ratio. Spring lamb meat had higher proportions of n-3 PUFA (C18:3n-3, C20:5, C22:5 and C22:6) and conjugated linoleic acid (C18:2c9t11+c11t9) to the detriment of the n-6 PUFAs (C20:4, C20:2 and C22:4), while autumn lamb meat also had higher levels of C18:3n-3 and C18:3n-6, and lower level of C20:4, which points to little seasonal differences. The n-6/n-3 ratio achieved by ewe grazing fell from 8.2 to 4.1 (Spring) and from 7.6 to 5.5 (Autumn), values which are close to those recommended in human diet for good cardiovascular health. These n-6/n-3 reductions were associated with lower levels of total PUFA and C20:4n-6. Our research concluded that grazing on stubble and Mediterranean shrubland by ewes, a sustainable rearing practice involving local agro resources, contributed to obtaining weaned lamb meat with a more favourable lipid profile and so can be recommended to sheep farmers.

A far-infrared observatory such as the SPace Infrared telescope for Cosmology and Astrophysics, with its unprecedented spectroscopic sensitivity, would unveil the role of feedback in galaxy evolution during the last ~10 Gyr of the Universe (z = 1.5–2), through the use of far- and mid-infrared molecular and ionic fine structure lines that trace outflowing and infalling gas. Outflowing gas is identified in the far-infrared through P-Cygni line shapes and absorption blueshifted wings in molecular lines with high dipolar moments, and through emission line wings of fine-structure lines of ionised gas. We quantify the detectability of galaxy-scale massive molecular and ionised outflows as a function of redshift in AGN-dominated, starburst-dominated, and main-sequence galaxies, explore the detectability of metal-rich inflows in the local Universe, and describe the most significant synergies with other current and future observatories that will measure feedback in galaxies via complementary tracers at other wavelengths.
