In the present work, classical electron–ion scattering, Coulomb logarithm, and stopping power are studied taking into account the quantum mechanical diffraction effect and the dynamic screening effect separately and together. The inclusion of the quantum diffraction effect is realized at the same level as the well-known first-order gradient correction in the extended Thomas–Fermi theory. In order to take the effect of dynamic screening into account, the model suggested by Grabowski et al. in 2013 is used. Scattering as well as stopping power of the external electron (ion) beam by plasma ions (electrons) and scattering of the plasma's own electrons (ions) by plasma ions (electrons) are considered differently. In the first case, it is found that in the limit of the non-ideal plasma with a plasma parameter Γ → 1, the effects of quantum diffraction and dynamic screening partially compensate each other. In the second case, the dynamic screening enlarges scattering cross-section, Coulomb logarithm, and stopping power, whereas the quantum diffraction reduces their values. Comparisons with the results of other theoretical methods and computer simulations indicate that the model used in this work gives a good description of the stopping power for projectile velocities $v\,{\rm \lesssim}\, 1.5 v_{{\rm th}}$, where vth is the thermal velocity of the plasma electrons.

Abundant tubular macrofossils occur in finely laminated siltstones and shales of the 548–542 Ma Schwarzrand Subgroup, Nama Group, Namibia. The Nama tubes occur in both the Vingerbreek and Feldschuhhorn members commonly in dense populations and always in fine-grained, lower shore-face lithologies deposited below fair-weather wave base. The tubes are preserved mostly as compressed casts and molds that range in width from 0.6 to 2.1 mm; apparently incomplete specimens reach lengths up to 10 cm. All specimens show sinuous bending and occasional brittle fracture, indicating an original construction of strong but flexible organic matter. Feldschuhhorn specimens preserve fine longitudinal pleats or folds that record pliant organic walls, but the older Vingerbreek populations do not. Similarly, some specimens in the Feldschuhhorn Member display branching, while Vingerbreek tubes do not. The abundant Feldschuhhorn tubes are assigned to the widespread Ediacaran problematicum Vendotaenia antiqua; however, the distinctive Vingerbreek population remains in open nomenclature. The most abundant fossils in Nama rocks, these tubes resemble populations in Ediacaran successions from Russia, China, Spain, and elsewhere. Beyond their local importance, then, such tubes may turn out to be the most abundant record of Ediacaran life.

An overview on current trends in stimulated Brillouin scattering and optical phase conjugation is given. This report is based on the results of the “Second International Workshop on stimulated Brillouin scattering and phase conjugation” held in Potsdam/Germany in September 2007. The properties of stimulated Brillouin scattering are presented for the compensation of phase distortions in combination with novel laser technology like ceramics materials but also for e.g., phase stabilization, beam combination, and slow light. Photorefractive nonlinear mirrors and resonant refractive index gratings are addressed as phase conjugating mirrors in addition.

Co on AlGaN is expected to form a large barrier Schottky contact due to its high work function. We have used this material combination with 18 % of Al in AlxGaN for the study of transient photoresponse in the photovoltaic mode and in secondary photocurrent measurements after pulsed laser excitation. In reverse bias and in short- circuit mode a fast decay with a characteristic time of a few microseconds is dominant at room temperature. This mode is appropriate for UV detector operation. At elevated temperature, a much slower tail extending to several milliseconds is also observed. In forward bias operation the slow tail is dominating at any temperature. We discuss this asymmetry with respect to fast minority carrier collection within the space charge region for primary photocurrents and the slower majority carrier transport in forward bias.

The photocurrent decay in n-type GaN films prepared by low-pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD) was measured in the ms-to-s time range using steady-state UV light and in the μs time regime using short high-power pulses from higher harmonics of a Nd:YAG laser. A power law time dependence is observed with exponents ranging from −0.1 to −0.3, which is an indication of a broad distribution of trapping states inside the band gap. Combining Hall effect results and the magnitude of the initial slope of the photocurrent decay we estimate a mobility-lifetime product of 2.1×10−4 cm2/V for photogenerated electrons at times below a few μs. Slow transients might be a handicap for applications of GaN in UV detectors.

The Dirichlet, Neumann and mixed boundary-value problems for the two-dimensional Helmholtz equation in the interior or exterior of a quadrant are considered in a Sobolev space setting. It is shown that the potential operators arising in the interior problems can be used to derive systems of boundary integral equations to the exterior problems, which can be solved explicitly.
