We discuss the role that coherence phenomena can have on the intensity variability of spectral lines associated with maser radiation. We do so by introducing the fundamental cooperative radiation phenomenon of (Dicke’s) superradiance and discuss its complementary nature to the maser action, as well as its role in the flaring behaviour of some maser sources. We will consider examples of observational diagnostics that can help discriminate between the two, and identify superradiance as the source of the latter. More precisely, we show how superradiance readily accounts for the different time-scales observed in the multi-wavelength monitoring of the periodic flaring in G9.62+0.20E.

The Maser Monitoring Organisation is a collection of researchers exploring the use of time-variable maser emission in the investigation of astrophysical phenomena. The forward directed aspects of research primarily involve using maser emission as a tool to investigate star formation. Simultaneously, these activities have deepened knowledge of maser emission itself in addition to uncovering previously unknown maser transitions. Thus a feedback loop is created where both the knowledge of astrophysical phenomena and the utilised tools of investigation themselves are iteratively sharpened. The project goals are open-ended and constantly evolving, however, the reliance on radio observatory maser monitoring campaigns persists as the fundamental enabler of research activities within the group.

Recently, remarkable progress has been made in understanding the formation of high mass stars. Observations provided direct evidence that massive young stellar objects (MYSOs), analogously to low-mass ones, form via disk-mediated accretion accompanied by episodic accretion bursts, possibly caused by disk fragmentation. In the case of MYSOs, the mechanism theoretically provides a means to overcome radiation pressure, but in practice it is poorly studied - only three accretion bursts in MYSOs have been caught in action to date. A significant contribution to the development of the theory has been made with the study of masers, which have proven to be a powerful tool for locating “bursting” MYSOs. This overview focuses on the exceptional role that masers play in the search and study of accretion bursts in massive protostars.

The 64-dish MeerKAT telescope was inaugurated in 2018 and has been conducting regular science operations since then. In the meantime, new observation modes have been under development. Spectral line modes are available, as well as L-, UHF- and S-band receivers. MeerKAT’s excellent sensitivity over a wide range of angular scales makes it an excellent choice for studies of HII regions, supernova remnants and planetary nebulae. In addition, an OH megamaser has been detected at z > 0.5 for the first time.

The MeerKAT radio telescope array is the South African precursor instrument for the proposed Square Kilometer Array's mid-band frequency range. It will be the most sensitive centimetre-wavelength telescope in the southern hemisphere until the SKA is built. It will cover a broad range of astronomical science from the evolution of galaxies to tests of Einstein's theory of General Relativity, using Pulsars. The chosen frequency bands will enable sensitive southern Galactic maser surveys in the main lines of hydroxyl, 12 GHz methanol and perhaps 14.5 GHz formaldehyde lines as well as searches for redshifted water masers from red-shifts greater than about 0.5. Proposals for Large Surveys using MeerKAT were solicited in late 2009 and resulted in some 20 proposals from teams comprising 500 scientists, world-wide. The successful proposals relevant to maser research will be discussed below.

Class II methanol masers are known to be tracers of an early phase of massive star formation. The 6.7- and 12.2-GHz methanol maser transitions can show a significant amount of variability, including periodic variations. Studying maser variability can lead to important insights into conditions in the maser environment but first the maser time-series need to be characterised. The results of long-term monitoring of 8 regularly-varying sources will be presented and methods of period-search discussed.

The bright interstellar methanol masers at 12.2 GHz and 6.7 GHz were discovered in 1987 and 1991 respectively. It was soon established that many were quite variable. Goedhart Gaylard & van der Walt (2003) reported that one source, G9.62+0.20E, exhibited flares at 12.2 and 6.7 GHz that appeared to be periodic, repeating every 246 days. Since then, monitoring of this and other possibly periodic sources has continued with the 26-m Hartebeesthoek telescope. We discuss here the full 12.2 GHz time series data of G9.62+0.20 through 2006. The data quality has been much improved by telescope upgrades. Flares in the main maser peak continue, the repetition rate remains close to that originally determined.

An intensive monitoring program of 54 6.7-GHz methanol maser sources was carried out at the Hartebeesthoek Radio Astronomy Observatory from January 1999 to April 2003. The monitoring program was subsequently continued on 19 sources of interest. Analysis of the resulting time-series stretching over eight years shows that six of the sources are periodic, with periods ranging from 133 days to 504 days. The waveforms in individual sources range from sinusoidal fluctuations to sharp flares and there can be other long term trends in the time-series. The amplitudes of the variations can also change from cycle to cycle. The time-series of the periodic masers will be presented, and possible causes of the variability discussed.

Methanol masers occuring in thirteen star-forming regions at both 6.7 and 12.2 GHz were monitored for a year at one to two week intervals using the 26-m Hartebeesthoek telescope. Correlated variations occurred in the masers in six of the ten sources that provided useful data.

A program monitoring the variability of a sample of 56 6.7 GHz methanol masers was started in December 1998. The sources are observed on a weekly basis. We present preliminary results of the monitoring program.
