Background: After a transient ischemic attack (TIA) or minor stroke, the long-term risk of subsequent stroke is uncertain. Methods: Electronic databases were searched for observational studies reporting subsequent stroke during a minimum follow-up of 1 year in patients with TIA or minor stroke. Unpublished data on number of stroke events and exact person-time at risk contributed by all patients during discrete time intervals of follow-up were requested from the authors of included studies. This information was used to calculate the incidence of stroke in individual studies, and results across studies were pooled using random-effects meta-analysis. Results: Fifteen independent cohorts involving 129794 patients were included in the analysis. The pooled incidence rate of subsequent stroke per 100 person-years was 6.4 events in the first year and 2.0 events in the second through tenth years, with cumulative incidences of 14% at 5 years and 21% at 10 years. Based on 10 studies with information available on fatal stroke, the pooled case fatality rate of subsequent stroke was 9.5% (95% CI, 5.9 – 13.8). Conclusions: One in five patients is expected to experience a subsequent stroke within 10 years after a TIA or minor stroke, with every tenth patient expected to die from their subsequent stroke.

We have been monitoring the flux density of Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*) at 22 GHz since DOY=42 (11 Feb. 2013) with a sub-array of the Japanese VLBI Network in order to search the increase of 22-GHz emission from Sgr A* induced by the interaction of the G2 cloud with the accretion disk. The flux densities observed until DOY=322 (18 Nov. 2013) are consistent with the previously observed values before the approaching of the cloud. We have detected no large flare during this period.

Sea urchin spermatozoa were injected into mature mouse oocytes to determine whether they can activate mouse oocytes and, if so, how they behave within the oocyte cytoplasm of such a distant species. While injection of a single spermatozoon into each oocyte did not activate any of the oocytes, injection of 10 spermatozoa activated about 20%. Within the cytoplasm of unactivated oocytes, sperm heads commonly transformed into chromosome-like structures. When a single spermatozoon was injected, and oocytes were then activated by Sr2+, about 30% of the activated oocytes had both female (mouse) and male (sea urchin) pronuclei when examined 8 h after sperm injection. These results indicated that sperm-borne oocyte activating factor(s) and the cytoplasmic factors controlling the development of the sperm pronucleus are not strictly species-specific.

Stable discharging of pure nitrogen can be maintained even at atmospheric pressure when alternative pulsed voltage is applied between two parallel plate electrodes. From optical emission spectroscopy, strong emissions from the N2 2nd positive system, weak emissions from N2 Herman's infrared system and N2 1st positive system were observed. The emission intensities from the N2 2nd positive system and the N2 Herman's infrared system increase with increasing the nitrogen gas pressure, whereas the emission intensities from the N2+ 1st negative system and N2 1st positive system decrease. The thickness of the silicon nitride film fabricated at 500 Torr was 1.6 nm at a nitridation temperature as low as 25°C, regardless of the nitridation temperature and nitridation time. From these results, we conclude that N2(C3IIu) plays an important role for the excellent reactivity of the nitrogen plasma generated near atmospheric pressure.

Thirty Japanese clinical isolates of Mycobacterium tuberculosis were analysed by pyrazinamide susceptibility testing and pyrazinamidase assay, as well as polymerase chain reaction for single-strand conformational polymorphism and direct sequencing of the gene encoding pyrazinamidase (pncA). All sensitive isolates showed pyrazinamidase activity and a wild-type pncA gene, but three resistant isolates had pncA gene mutations and lacked pyrazinamidase activity. The latter isolates showed a minimum inhibitory concentration of at least 100 mg/l by the 7H10 agar proportion method and 400 mg/l by the 7H9 liquid medium method. Isolate 28 showed T-to-C change at position 11, leading to Leu4→Ser substitution; isolate 29 had an 8-bp deletion from position 382; and isolate 30 had A-to-C change at position 29, leading to Gln10→Pro substitution. The deletion has not been described previously. This is the first demonstration of pncA gene mutations in PZA-resistant M. tuberculosis strains isolated from Japanese patients.

Characteristics of selective anodization of p+-type Si have been studied. Temporal evolution of the etching front was visualized by periodic porosity modulated anodization. The etching front proceeded inside along the bottom of mask making its angle with the mask bottom face sharper and sharper. It was also found that the etching front proceeds forming a specifically angled facet. Selective anodization was applied to form Si micro-tips. Proper time of anodization for p+-type Si substrate with an n-type circular shape mask left a Si micro-tip formed on the substrate. A high resolution SEM observation revealed that the apex of the tip was composed of {110} facets.

Rye is an important source of plant lignans in Finland. In the present crossover trial we wanted to study the effect of rye bread as part of the usual diet on serum and urine enterolactone (ENL) concentrations in healthy volunteers. Eighteen men aged 43 (SEM 2·0) YEARS AND TWENTY-ONE WOMEN AGED 43 (sem 1·6) years consumed wholemeal rye bread and white wheat bread in random order for 4 weeks. The bread periods were separated by a 4 week wash-out period. The breads provided at least 20 % of the daily energy intake. The mean intakes of rye bread were 219 (sem 14·6) and 162 (sem 5·3) g/d and those of wheat bread were 200 (sem 9·6) and 153 (sem 5·8) g/d for men and women respectively. Blood samples were collected from all subjects and three 24 h urine samples were collected from ten men and twelve women at the end of both bread periods for the determination of serum concentration and urinary excretion of ENL. The mean serum ENL concentrations in both men and women at the beginning of baseline period and at the end of the rye-bread period remained constant and were significantly higher than those at the end of the wheat-bread period. Correspondingly, daily urinary ENL excretion increased significantly during the rye-bread period compared with the wheat-bread period and was 5- and 10-fold higher in men and women respectively in comparison with the amount of plant lignan precursors measured in the rye bread. These data indicate the presence of other precursors for ENL in rye which are not detected by the current method of measuring plant lignans in food. The possible role of fibre in enhancement of the formation of mammalian lignans from their plant precursors in the gut also remains to be determined.

Background. Although the ‘high interpersonal sensitivity’ type of personality has repeatedly been shown to be related to depression by case–control studies, no studies have confirmed whether this association also exists in a non-clinical sample.

Methods. Scores on the Interpersonal Sensitivity Measure (IPSM) were compared between employed Japanese adults with and without a lifetime diagnosis of major depressive disorder. The diagnosis was provided by the Inventory to Diagnose Depression, Lifetime version. A multiple logistic regression analysis estimated the odds ratios for having a lifetime diagnosis of depression.

Results. The scores on the IPSM were higher in the subjects with a lifetime history of depression than those without a lifetime history of depression. On the five subscales of the IPSM, the subjects with a lifetime history of depression showed higher scores on ‘interpersonal awareness’, ‘need for approval’, and ‘separation anxiety’ than those without a lifetime history of depression. The multiple logistic regression analysis showed that the subjects with the high interpersonal sensitivity type of personality had an increased risk for experiencing lifetime depression.

Conclusions. The results suggest that high interpersonal sensitivity is a risk factor for depression even in a non-clinical sample from non-Western culture.

We observed a dramatic peak in the 1/f noise at the metal-insulator transition (MIT) in low-Tc, manganites. This many-orders-of-magnitude noise enhancement is observed for both polycrystalline and single-crystal samples of La5/8−y. Pry, Ca3/8MnO3 (y = 0.35 – 0.4) and Pr1−xCaxMnO3 (x = 0.35 – 0.5). This observation strongly suggests that the microscopic phase separation in the low-Tc, manganites causes formation of a percolation network, and that the observed MIT is a percolation threshold. It is shown that the scale of phase separation in polycrystalline samples is much smaller than that in single crystals.

We discuss the fragmentation of primordial gas clouds in the universe after decoupling. Comparing the timescale of collapse (tdyn) with that of fragmentation (tfrag), we obtained the minimum mass of a fragment analytically as following way.

Porous silicon was used to fabricate refractive index lattices. Patterned n-doping and/ or substrate etching were used to introduce lateral periodicity. By anodizing p-type substrate with an n-doped area, we realized large refractive index contrast two-dimensional lattices with underlying cladding layer. The anodization process showed an effect specific to the small dimensional patterning and this effect has significant influence on the formed refractive index structure.
