In this article, we examine the impact of syllabi wording on how students assess a hypothetical instructor for an introductory political science course at a medium-sized state institution. Student participants were recruited from political science classes at this institution and randomly assigned to two groups. The groups were asked to review a sample syllabus from an introductory political science class and answer a number of questions regarding the instructor, as well as a few demographic questions. The syllabi were identical except for the wording of the requirements. For one group, the requirements were expressed in “rewarding” terms; for the other, the requirements were expressed in “punishing” terms.

Elections and Democratization in Ukraine represents a valuable contribution to our understanding of the dynamics of party systems development in postcommunist politics. Unlike many volumes that rely on largely anecdotal evidence and narrative, this book is extremely well organized and systematic. There is a clear theoretical structure, and systematic evidence is employed to test specific hypotheses. Using some of the classic works on the development of party systems and relations between parties and voters to provide a theoretical framework, the author derives a set of hypotheses about characteristics that might affect voter choices over time.

Quite often, people make jokes at the expense of political science majors. These jokes suggest that political science majors—and especially those graduating from liberal arts colleges and universities—have not acquired the necessary practical skills to make a living, let alone to acquire a lucrative career.

The mechanism of myocardial injury in myocarditis is still unclear. Recently, nitric oxide (NO), massively produced in the inflammation, has been suggested to be harmful for tissue at excess amount as well as superoxide. However, it is still unclear the relationship between production of NO with superoxide and myocardial damage in myocarditis. In this study, we investigated whether NO and/or superoxide play an important role in the pathogenesis of myocardial injury in myocarditis.

The heart tissue specimens were taken from Lewis rats with experimentally induced myocarditis. Immunohistochemical staining was performed using polyclonal antibody for inducible NO synthase by avidin-biotin peroxidase complex method in paraffin sections of the tissue. Histochemical study for ultrastructural H2O2-producing site in the heart tissue was carried out by Brigg’ s method using CeCl3; briefly, the heart tissues were incubated in 0.1M Tris-malate buffer with ImM CeCl3 and 10mM aminotriazole. Then tissues were fixed in 2% glutaraldehyde, postfixed with 1% OsO4 and embedded in resin for electron microscopy.

Acute myocarditis is a potentially lethal disease. However, the precise mechanism of myocardial damage in myocarditis is still unknown, although its pathogenesis seems to be involved in the result of natural killer cells, cytotoxic T cells and autoantibodies. Recently, it has been reported that programmed death of cardiac myocytes can be induced by several pathological conditions including infarction and end-stage cardiac failure. However, little is known about the myocardial cell death in myocarditis. In this study, we investigated whether myocardial cell death via apoptosis occurs in the heart tissue with myocarditis.

Since it has been reported that the pathogenesis of the tissue damage in viral myocarditis resembles that in experimental autoimmune myocarditis induced by myosin, we used an experimental model for autoimmune myocarditis induced in Lewis rat with the use of myosin as the antigen. Rats were sacrificed on days 14, 17 and 21 after myosin injection. The tissue specimens were taken from ventricle of the heart.

The topmost atoms of TiO2 - terminated SrTiO3(001) annealed at temperatures between room temperature and 800°C in ultra high vacuum (UHV), have been studied by means of in-situ coaxial impact collision ion scattering spectroscopy (CAICISS). Both time-of-flight spectra at the incident angle of 45.0°C along [ 100] azimuth and of 35.3°C along [110] azimuth revealed Ti and weak O peaks and no Sr peak at 150°C, which means that the topmost layer at 150°C is terminated by TiCh-plane, completely. On the other hand, as increasing the substrate temperature, Sr peak began to appear above 400°C. This Sr peak intensity from both directions was drastically increased with elevating the substrate temperature. This indicates that the topmost O and Ti atoms desorb from the surface at the higher substrate temperature. The ratio Sr/Ti corresponds to the amount of the topmost oxygen or titanium vacancies due to the desorption. It was found that 40 % of the topmost oxygen atoms and 32% of the topmost titanium atoms desorb from TiO2-terminated SrTiO3(001) surface at 800°C. The activation energies for oxygen and titanium desorption were 0.28eV and 0.40eV, respectively.

Molecular layer epitaxy and the topmost surface structure in laser MBE of perovskite and other related oxides were investigated by in situ RHEED, in situ angle-resolved XPS (ARXPS) and ex situ co-axial ISS (CAICISS) analyses. Two-dimensional epitaxial growths of SrTiO3 (001) and BaCuO2(001) on SrTiO3(001) substrate were achieved by optimizing the growth conditions. Periodicities of RHEED oscillation corresponded well to the growth of a repeating unit cell (molecular layer). ARXPS and CAICISS spectra revealed that (Sr-0) atomic plane came at the top of SrTiO3(001) film growing on SrTiO3 (001) substrate with (Ti-O) atomic plane on the top. This indicates the structural conversion of the topmost atomic layer from TiO2 to SrO occurred during the SrTiO3 homoepitaxial growth.
