Following the stability analysis method in classic fluid dynamics, a linear stability equation (LSE) suitable for rarefied flows is derived based on the Bhatnagar–Gross–Krook (BGK) equation. The global method and singular value decomposition method are used for modal and non-modal analysis, respectively. This approach is validated by results obtained from Navier–Stokes (NS) equations. The modal analysis shows that LSEs based on NS equations (NS-LSEs) begin to fail when the Knudsen number ($Kn$) increases past $\sim$0.01, regardless of whether a slip model is used. When $Kn\geq 0.01$, the growth rate of the least stable mode is generally underestimated by the NS-LSEs. Under a fixed wavenumber, the pattern (travelling or standing wave) of the least stable mode changes with $Kn$; when the mode presents the same pattern, the growth rate decreases almost linearly with increasing $Kn$; otherwise, rarefaction effects may not stabilize the flow. The characteristic lengths of the different modes are different, and the single-scale classic stability analysis method cannot predict multiple modes accurately, even when combined with a slip model and even for continuum flow. However, non-modal analysis shows that this error does not affect the transient growth because modes with small growth rates offer little contribution to the transient growth. In rarefied flow, as long as the Mach number ($Ma$) is large enough, transient growth will occur in some wavenumber ranges. The rarefaction effect plays a stabilizing role in transient growth. The NS-LSEs-based method always overestimates the maximum transient growth.

Auto-alignment is a basic technique for high-power laser systems. Special techniques have been developed for laser systems because of their differing structures. This paper describes a new sensor for auto-alignment in a laser system, which can also serve as a reference in certain applications. The authors prove that all of the beam transfer information (position and pointing) can theoretically be monitored and recorded by the sensor. Furthermore, auto-alignment with a single lens sensor is demonstrated on a simple beam line, and the results indicate that effective auto-alignment is achieved.

Background: Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a degenerative disorder of the central nervous system mainly affecting the motor system. Presently, there is no effective and safe drug to treat patients with PD. Ginkgo biloba extract (GBE), obtained from leaves of the Ginkgo biloba tree, is a complex mixture of ingredients primarily containing two active components: flavonoids and terpenoids. In this study, we investigated the effects of GBE on A53T α-synuclein transgenic mice, a PD model that has better simulated the progression of PD patients than other models such as the 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6 tetrahydropyridine–induced PD model. Methods: Fifty α-synuclein A53T transgenic mice were fed and treated with GBE, and locomotor activity was detected by pole test, forced swim test, and wire-hang test. The expression of tyrosine hydroxylase and dopamine transporters was detected using immunohistochemistry. Superoxide dismutase activity, glutathione peroxidase activity, and malondialdehyde expression were detected using an assay kit. Results: Our results show that GBE treatment improved locomotor activity and that superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase inhibited the expression of methane dicarboxylic aldehyde and recovered the expression of tyrosine hydroxylase and dopamine transporters. Conclusions: The GBE treatment improved locomotor activity and inhibited the development of PD in the A53T α-synuclein transgenic mice, which may be partly responsible for decreased oxidative damage and maintain the normal dopamine homeostasis.

The driving mechanism of solar flares and coronal mass ejections is a topic of ongoing debate, apart from the consensus that magnetic reconnection plays a key role during the impulsive process. While present solar research mostly depends on observations and theoretical models, laboratory experiments based on high-energy density facilities provide the third method for quantitatively comparing astrophysical observations and models with data achieved in experimental settings. In this article, we show laboratory modeling of solar flares and coronal mass ejections by constructing the magnetic reconnection system with two mutually approaching laser-produced plasmas circumfused of self-generated megagauss magnetic fields. Due to the Euler similarity between the laboratory and solar plasma systems, the present experiments demonstrate the morphological reproduction of flares and coronal mass ejections in solar observations in a scaled sense, and confirm the theory and model predictions about the current-sheet-born anomalous plasmoid as the initial stage of coronal mass ejections, and the behavior of moving-away plasmoid stretching the primary reconnected field lines into a secondary current sheet conjoined with two bright ridges identified as solar flares.

Using the INRA – University of Minnesota porcine 7000 Rad Radiation Hybrid panel (IMpRH) containing 118 clones, porcine cellular retinol binding protein gene 1 (RBP1) and plasma retinol binding protein gene 4 (RBP4) were assigned to porcine chromosomes 13 and 14, respectively. The mRNA distributions of the two genes in adult Wuzhishan pig tissues (lung, skeletal muscle, spleen, heart, stomach, large intestine, lymph node, small intestine, liver, brain, kidney and fat) were examined. One single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) was identified in Laiwu, Wuzhishan, Guizhou, Bama pig breeds and a Tongcheng experimental population and analysed using a polymerase chain reaction–restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR–RFLP) method. Significant associations were found between different genotypes of A/G156 and maximum carcass length (LM), minimum carcass length (LN), haemoglobin (HGB), mean corpuscular volume haemoglobin (MCH), and day to slaughter weight (age) traits in the Tongcheng experimental population. This SNP locus might be used as a genetic marker in pig breeding and production.

Combining the long serial analysis of gene expression (LongSAGE) and the generation of longer cDNA fragments from serial analysis of gene expression tags for gene identification (GLGI) technique, a new strategy called modified GLGI (M-GLGI) was developed to isolate unknown 3′ expressed sequence tags (ESTs) and discover novel genes. A 17 bp LongSAGE tag was used as sense primer instead of a 10-base SAGE tag; PCR reaction was performed under an appropriate annealing temperature for each tag; universal DNA polymerase was used in PCR amplification instead of Pfu enzyme; a common cloning strategy using pMD-18T vector and Escherichia coli DH5α cells were used instead of a special vector and competent cells. Moreover, ESTs isolated by M-GLGI had 3′ ends with the polyadenylation signals and poly(dA) tails. This method is more sensitive for identifying genes expressed in low abundance than conventional EST sequencing.
